(Consoles) Available for Purchase 12/29: The Nintendo Wii will again be available for purchase on Amazon.com on 12/29, Friday morning, at some point between 7am and 11am PST. We will be limiting purchases to one per household. We anticipate that we will sell through our inventory very quickly as demand for this product continues to be very high. At this time, we do not have any information on future Nintendo Wii offers, but we will post updates on future availability on this page.

I love how they narrow it down.
I don't know if I can take another 4 hours of refreshing, then having to get in the shower and having it go up (what happened to me the first time Amazon sold them on teh morning of launch day).
But thanks for the heads up. I'll be there at first, but if theyre not up within the first hour, I'm done.

well this might be a good chance to get another wii since it is $20 off retail after tax, and I can use the chase visa credit card to get another $30 off. On the other hand, I can wait until next year, who knows how long, and then use the $30 off when amazon doesn't sell out their inventory at the speed of light.

20gb ps3s are a lot easier to get than 60gb. I saw 2 people buying 60gb ps3s, well a mommy and her precious sonnies, at circuit city today while I was returning my worthless Wii classic controller. You should easily be able to find a 20gb at a EB/GS or other stores if you just call a few.
I think I'll check amazon when i wake up around 9:30am. It'd be nice to get one $50 under retail to sell to my friends for retail price since 2 of them want one.

I've had the oposite problem. I've seen a few 60GBs (they go fast, but I've had a couple of chances), but the 20's are always out of stock before I get there.
Until I saw this thread I was wondering if Sony was deliberately putting out more 60s just so they don't lose as much money. I was thinking maybe there were no more 20s, but luckily it sounds like that's not the case.
The one thing I would like on the 20 is a built in memory card reader. Even if it's only Memory Sticks that would be cool. You just attach an external one for it, but still.

I think he means $50 under retail b/c of free shipping and no tax.
My 60GB PS3 was about $650 at B&M BB w/ tax added.
Depending on where you live the tax on a 20GB unit could equal around $50.

Oh and BTW if you pay in store credit at EB Games, they don't tax it if anyone wants a no tax Wii (or atleast thats how it was for me) and has alot of store credit.

Anyone have guesses on how much stock they'll have? Even though it's online, I'm expecting numbers similar to in-store shipments (15-25 consoles). I hope I'm wrong and they have a hundred or more units, but it'll most likely be less.

With each Best Buy guaranteeing a minimum of 25 PS3s in their Sunday circulars, I would be pretty astonished if Amazon didn't have around 1k.

That would be sweet if Amazon had 1000 Wii consoles, just like when Futureshop had 1000 PS3s the other day. In the back of my mind I think this will turn out like the "$100 360s on Thanksgiving" situation, but with the 4 hour timeframe I guess they're trying to prevent people from crashing the site at one time, if it's possible to do that.

Unless this deal hasn't gone live yet, they may already be out.
So far I've seen 2 60GB PS3s at Wallmart and a 20GB PS3 at Best Buy while I was just looking. It seems they are becoming more available to the public now that Christmas is over and people are returning their eBay ones. I'm yet to see a Wii in store though. It seems the 360 was harder to find, for me at least, than the other systems.
Good luck to anyone looking for a system.

If you're not 10 or under, God help us all. That's calloused, sure, but it's true.
P.S. PS3s have been showing up in stores over the last few days...and the results have often been far from instant sellouts. I should know, as I found one for my brother last Friday at a Best Buy. This is largely because of eBayers losing all motivation to hoard them (flips bird to their general direction), and that is largely because the Wii stole the fickle public's attention this holiday and because Sony's system starts at $500 and really doesn't have anything unique to offer...at this point. Things will find their level by this time next year, I have no doubt about it.

Note to those purchasing a console: Due to the unique nature of this product and the handling required, the promised shipping date may not be accurate. While we expect that most units purchased will ship within the next week, the date indicated immediately after completing your purchase may reflect a different ship date. We encourage you to be patient and check back later.

Well actually I did get a Wii yesterday... tru.com Action #2 bundle. I ordered it before XMAS and thought they cancelled it due to lack of stock. Well apparently not as it arrived yesterday. My hope wa that I could return all of the extra bundle crap and just keep the console w/ Zelda. I called the TRU.COM 1-800 # last night. I got connected to a call center in India it sounded like and the lady told me that it was a bundle so it was all or nothing. Now either #1 she didn;t know what she was talking about or #2 since it's under a single SKU you can't break it up. I was going to call the B&M TRU today and ask about TRU.COM returns there.

I know I was hoping to dump the extras b/c I can't afford a $539 Wii system. I asked the TRU.COM person I spoke with yesterday about B&M returns. She really had no clue b/c she told me to check with my closest store (just trying to get me off the phone). She then said that it was up to the individual store when I asked if they would be able to refund the cost of the 4 games and mem card to my CC.

I've gotten this message a few times (no mention of being on sale today).
We are currently out of stock: We sold out of our initial supply of the Wii on Sunday morning, November 19, in less than one minute. We expect to receive periodic shipments of the Wii from Nintendo throughout the holidays and we will post availability updates in this section of the product detail page as well as in the customer discussions below.
But sometimes it comes up with the info about being on sale today. Maybe it's a caching thing.

The one I spoke to said they would just refund it to my CC, and as long as I had the receipt, I was G2G.
I may call them again and ask someone else about it (or ask for a call center manager). I want the straight scoop. I bet it's a no go because if they process the return there's only one line item for them to take back, the SKU for the bundle @$539. They would then have to check to make sure everything that is included with that one line item is back then issue the refund for the whole shabang.

I was refreshing every 5 seconds and never saw it at all. I'm betting 99% of everyone doing that also never saw it.
Like I said in the chat room, why bother even telling people you're getting them in-stock if you have so few units they sell out in under 5 SECONDS?
Why not reduce traffic and tech issues and just put them in stock without all the fanfare -- if you've got so few units they'll sell out anyway as soon as someone posts about it in a forum, message board, etc.
Why waste everyone's time? If you don't have enough to last, say, 60 seconds, what's the point?

This might be a bit of a publicity stunt. Amazon's all, "Yeah, we're definitely gonna have these in stock." They aren't in stock any longer, after five seconds, but it makes people aware that Wii shipments are in fact coming to amazon.com, so people will be more inclined to sit in and wait for the next shipment than getting out to a B&M store someplace.

Well if they don't last for 5 seconds I can't see how it would make anyone be encouraged about participating the next time Amazon holds one of these "stunts."
If the option to order doesn't even appear for most people in a 5-second cycle, and they STILL sell out, that's beyond lame.

They couldnt possibly have a few set aside to deal with replacements. And a few is all it would take.
Look at how many they are selling worldwide. On top of that, look at how many DSes they are selling on a daily basis. Its the fastest selling console by a wide margin everywhere.
They sold just short of 300,000 Wii units in Japan last week. I can believe that they are having trouble producing the WORLD's demand on a weekly basis.

Chitown021

Well you'd figure any company at launch would set aside a small number of units to replace defects. I'm sure they do quality control or some sort of testing pre-launch. They estimate the failure rate, and have x number of replacements on hand to cover it.
I'm sure they get a statistic like 1 in 5000 units fail or something like that.

I understand how it could seem this way, but let's remember how the finances of the videogame industry work:
Console producers typically lose money on each piece of hardware they sell (at least in the beginning); they make up for that by getting a slice of the profit for each copy of a game that is sold (this is much more lucrative if they develop the game themselves). It is a fact that games will not sell if the console is not available, so there is nothing to gain and everything to lose if a company "held" back console units to create demand. Nintendo is pushing out the Wii production as fast as they can, just as Sony and Microsoft are.

Yes but traditionally money is lost on every console sold. I wonder if this is the first time a company has actually turned a profit (at launch) on a console.
The original point was (if I'm referencing correctly) that there is not really a reason to hold hardware back other than to (perhaps) inflate hype. There clearly is no $ to be made by holding the consoles back, as the software (again, around launch until hardware components get cheaper) is the only product that makes money.

Traditionally would be outside of Nintendo. They have historically broken even or profited marginally on all their consoles, except for one quarter when the Gamecube was dropped to $100. They're not a fan of the loss leader strategy

Nintendo is one of the few systems the most of the parts are right off the self part to assaemble the Wii. Unlike Sony which has a customized system. Well, really the CPU and GPU in the Wii are custom too, it's just that they're much, much, much, much cheaper to produce than PS3's CPU and GPU. There's nothing in the Wii that would be a challenge to produce...which is why it's weird they've released so few. I they really are hanging on to them, I think they're making a HUGE mistake.

Soooooo where is the Playstation 3? They've got literally a minute left...
This system just stinks compared to the random lottery. Ironic that we had millions of whiners in that one and not here.
They just put up the Ps3 20gb. You have got through the used & new sellers. I just bought one. GOAL!!!!!!

They just sold 279,000 units last week in Japan. The Worldwide demand, is going to be well over a million units per month. Hell, the Japanese demand is almost that by itself.
I think you are overestimating how many of these they can make. A lot of their manufacturing is also split with DS, which is the top seller in all regions worldwide.

I have no idea how many Nintendo can make, just that in general they would be easy to make. Nintendo may or may not have the capability to pump them out fast.

I have no idea how many Nintendo can make, just that in general they would be easy to make. Nintendo may or may not have the capability to pump them out fast. They just boosted production of the DS from 2.3 to 2.5 million per month starting next month. So depending on how harder or easier it is to make a console than a handheld, and knowing that the DS Lite has been in production for probably a year, you can make your assumptions about their production capacity there.

25% off coupon was part of the American Express wishlist contest... It's good multiple times up to $150 in savings (aka 600 dollars spent), but you must have an Amex card to participate in the contest and you must pay with your Amex card at amazon to get the discount.

The 20 Gig PS3 and even to the 60 Gig, in general arent selling out quickly anymore, at least here in the Tampa Bay market. I see PS3s (20 gig and 60 gig) often and they last for quite some time. The EB by USF (7th largest school in the country) has had them (60 Gig) in stock since yesterday and they arent selling.

Five minutes? 30 seconds? lol, obviously you guys lucked out and didn't waste your time.
Actually, it was more like under 5 SECONDS. Seriously. Even if you kept hitting refresh over and over, most people didn't even see that it was in-stock.

I saw like eight to ten of the Playstation 3 60GB consoles today while I was out searching for a Nintendo Wii. Toys-R-Us had six in the case... and EB Games and Gamestop each had one for sale (for the past few days)..
I love seeing the Ebay PS3's online with ZERO bids.... it brings a smile to my face.

Hey guys...I'm trying to find out how long each of the systems were available before they sold out. I want to update the front page.
From reading the thread here, it looks like:
Wii - approximately 5 seconds
PS3 60GB - 20 minutes
PS3 20GB - 60 minutes
Is this accurate?
Thanks!
Oh, and I'm in the chat room (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/chat.php?) wanting to hear your war stories.

wii - no one knows exactly but under 30 seconds is legitimate.. it appears that amazon spread the server load amongst multiple servers (hence people receiving 3-4 different product update text when they refreshed), and a vast number of people didn't even get to see an add to cart button.
PS3 60gb - I had it at 11 minutes. 10:59 to 11:10. Seemed to be much more reliable when loading and reloading.
ps3 20gb - was showing for a long time, but people were reporting they could add to cart but it was sold out once they added, so I'm not sure on that one.

Most people who were refreshing the wii page every 5 secs didn't even get to see it, so it probably sold out under 4 seconds.
