I was at two Blockbusters yesterday, looking for some Wii games to rent. I also browsed the GameCube selection and saw a few rare games that if I found on eBay would be ridiculous prices. I was thinking to myself, maybe I could buy those games to add to my collection after renting them, like GameFly's Keep It policy, if I find the conditions to be good.
Any idea how much Blockbuster would charge me if I wanted to buy their games? When I rented Rayman for the Wii, I got an Own-It price in case I don't return the game. Is that what I'd have to pay? And do I get the nice case and manual? Not that I'm expecting these games to be in good or great condition, but if I get lucky, maybe I can walk away with some deals on out of print games compared to eBay.

I assume you'd probably pay the ful 49.99 cost of the game as the buy it price. Chances are though that the game would be in poor condition, and you likely wouldn't be able to get the case. You definitely wouldn't have any manual because Blockbuster normally just pitches those in the garbage.

yeah, they give you an own it price which is what you have to pay. Not sure on the case. I'm sure you could go in and ask for it when you go in to pay the own it price assuming they don't charge your credit card for it first.

When you rent it, it will tell you on the receipt what you would have to pay to keep it.
I'm considering doing the same thing with a couple of Bond movies.

If you decide to keep it, they'll charge the Keep It price to your Blockbuster account and they'll pull the game case off the shelf once that period expires (14 - 21 days?). In my experience though, I bought Drakengard 2 right when it was released and they swapped the nice PS2 case out for a generic DVD case (got it swapped again after griping about it). I did get the manual as well...
I got Jedi Knight II for the GC this way. The disc was in fairly bad shape and there was no manual (though I did get the original case/insert) when I went back. This was a year or so ago when they used to discount the rental fee off the purchase price. So I think I only paid $18 more to keep it. They changed that policy in August - now you pay the full price ON TOP of the rental fee. And it seems that at least with new games, they don't charge you the used price, but the full, new MSRP, which sucks a bit. I'm not sure on older games what they charge. But when I did it, it was $7 (rental price) off the regular used game price, so it was a good deal for those hard-to-find games.

Well, I found Mario Tennis at this particular Blockbuster. I rented it out and looking at how it plays. It is obviously scratched a bit, but still playing well as far as I can tell. Luckily, the Own It price is $29.99 and the original box at store has the manual. Considering the game costs $80+ new on eBay and used go from $40+, I'm thinking this may be the way to purchase the game. Of course, I'll be on the look out for some eBay auctions for now since I have the game for a week.

WHOA! Which mario tennis? 80+ new? I have a complete n64 mario tennis that I wouldn't mind making $70 from.

Believe it or not, it is simply the GC Mario Power Tennis. I was shocked when I found this out a month ago or so. Of course I have my completely mint copy, but it is too good of a game to sell off, even though I'm sure it will get reprinted at some point, probably as a Player's Choice title. I never play it any more though.

You really think they'll do a Player's Choice reprint this late? With the Wii released, I don't see too many GameCube games, PC or not, coming down the line. I don't know how fast games go from "Best Seller" status to Player's Choice.
I don't know. I've enjoyed all of the Mario sports titles. Mario Tennis was my most favorite, only second possibly to Golf on all of the systems. Simple, but still fun.
