While watching attack of the show the other night they mentioned rumors of Nintendo working on a third DS. First off iv heard no rumors, but second I really dont see what else they could do to improve the system that much. So im asking you all what would it take to convince you to buy a new model of the DS?
Personally the only thing I can think of that would convince me to trade from my DSL is larger screens without loosing comfortabilty. The DSLs shoulder buttons are really the only design flaw I can find in the system, the weight of it is perfect and the brightness levels are perfect.....so I cant see anything but larger screens without sacrafacing any of the before mentioned features including weight that would sell me on a third DS model.

I still have my original cause the Lite colors just suck. White is fine, if you don't mind smudge marks all over it as time progresses (see store models).
Black is just bleh.
And Pastel Pink?! Yeah, maybe if I was having a baby girl or something. What the hell is with that color?!
If they introduced a new model, AND it had a kickass color scheme, I would buy.

3 conditions, it has to be updated with a bigger screen and whatever good features, it would have to come with a game making it cheaper than buying a DSlite+ and the game cheaper, and it would have to be a limited edition version of the new DSlite+. So a new system with the new zelda game, and a limited edition triforce version of said system.

Nothing. I still have my DS fat and I have 0 desire to get a DS Lite. There would have to be some new functionality for me to buy. (GBA to GBA SP for example) Though I'm not a standard Nintendo fan. Many seem to only need a new color to buy a new system.

Ya I dont understand the whole color thing. I could maybe understand upgrading for something like a LE Zelda DS or something....but not just for a color. The features should be what matters. Its why I upgraded from a DS to a DSL because its just 10x more playable.

Bought my third DS already (two Phaties, one Lite) so nothing. The only way I see myself buying another DS is if they include GBA multiplayer, GB compatability, build in the Internet browser, and pop Pictochat online for 99.99.

The only thing that I could think of would be the ability to play VC games downloaded from the Wii.

i think a firmware upgrade would be in order for me. internet, email, pda functions, online pictochat, and some multimedia support mp3s, pictures, movies, etc.

OOOOO that would suck! Im hoping they just come up with something like a cart that costs us $20-$50 and lets us do that instead of freaking putting out $130 for a new system. THen again if they did that, then they added online functions for pictochat and web browsing, and then finally did make the screen even just a little smaller id be sold in a heartbeat.

enough memory that you could save demos or whatever and they dont get erased every time you turn off the system
Oops! I did it again.

Like MSI Magus said, I cannot really think of any flaws with the Lite that would spur a significantly improved upgrade. With the Phat, there were a near laundry list of improvements that could be made, and Nintendo accomplished most of those.
I just got my Lite, so I'd be REALLY hard pressed to buy another DS in the next year or two unless my current Lite is damaged. But if an upgrade came out that made the screens bigger and closer together, made the case itself thinner and even easier to hold somehow, and possibly gave it an even sharper new look, then I'd probably be sold. But if it were nothing more than a Lite design with slightly bigger screens and slightly better battery life, I would NOT move on up.

SD card slot.
Then I could get a DS and everything I like about the PSP. (Easy 16-bit emulation and homebrew)

You could always just flash your DS if you really need to pirate shit.
The main things I could see being improved would be moving the screens even closer together and maybe making it lighter/thinner. Though I wouldn't call it large or heavy as it is...
Then you could make the volume two buttons rather than a slider and maybe give you some way to adjust the contrast outside of the startup screen.
The triggers could probably be a little nicer, too.
Oh, and they could make it WPA compliant for wifi. That would be really nice.
I don't know it's all pretty minor stuff.
WPA compliance would be the biggie for me. If they did that plus a few other improvements I'd upgrade provided I could sell the lite on eBay and buy the redesign for $20-30 out of pocket.
If they did make the screens larger they'd still have to keep the same resolution to maintain full compatibility between all 3 versions, right?
Also love the one about letting you save demos. That would be really nice. They could make it so they are saved and you can even broadcast out any demo you have saved to anyone else's DS. Why not? The whole point of them is to have as many people as possible play them.

For me it would be my second...I never had the DS Phat. The only thing that would really tempt me would be larger screens and/or a flat finish on the outer casing. I have the Onyx DS Lite and it collects fingerprints like nobody's business. I knew that would happen but I preferred it to white and I wouldn't be caught dead with a Pink DS. (And yes, I'm a woman, but still...) Give me a Flame Red (a la the GBA SP) or Spice colored (a la the GameCube controllers) DS and I'd be all over it.

If they upgrade the LCD displays to a single flexible OLED display. This would get rid of the annoying gap between the top and bottom screen and make it all one screen. Since OLEDs don't require a backlight, the system could be even thinner and lighter.
If the flexible OLED is too far in the future, making the top screen slide up similar to the way cellphones do instead of rotating would be cool. This would let you play the DS in a compact single screen setup if you wanted to play GBA or games that only require one screen.
Adding more onboard memory or an SD card slot to download full versions of games.
Adding a bluetooth headset and built in digital camera/webcam. Imagine playing online with one screen dedicated to stats and webcam views of your opponents' faces and being able to talk trash to them(all with no lag of course).
I wouldn't mind having a web browser or IM/Email service to message others with a DS basically turning your DS into a PDA/Sidekick.

I would only buy it if it radically improved the graphics, added a wonky analog 'nub', halved (or quartered...better yet!) its battery life, required memory cards, tried to be everything to everyone with minimal success, and refocused its library on ports of pre-existing games and licensed shovelware. When are we going to get that Handheld to End All Handhelds?

Yeah, nothing particularly wrong with the DS Lite. I guess:
-Gameboy and Gameboy Color compatibility-I'd but a third in a second if it had this
-Larger screens (not that they're small now)
-larger d-pad (though it's already pretty good)
-umm...fix it so it runs with no battery for if/when we can't buy new ones for it 10-15 years from now or whatever.
Oh, and OLEDs stink IMO. I've never seen one that looks decent, and they burn out FAST. LCD's are the longest lasting display technology, OLED is the shortest. I don't know why everyone's so obsessed with it.

Give it a Mother 4 paintjob and package it with Mother 4 for DS or give it a Mother paintjob and package it with a Mother Collection DS.

It would have to be something pretty major that couldn't be supported on the existing models. My launch original DS is working just fine.

Not going to happen. Nintendo had a very good reason to drop support for pre-GBA carts. They run on 5 volts where the GBA games use 3.3 volts. supporting both voltages complicates the engineering and shortens battery life, both short and long term.
What old GB/GBC are really worth bothering with at this late date? Some of the best sellers like the early Pokemons have gotten GBA remakes already.

Perfectly happy with my DS Lite. The only way I'd buy a new one is if I broke or lost my current one.

Not much.
Something like a SNES or N64 edition would do it. It would have to have a different color and decals. Sort of like the NES Edition GBA SP.
As I never bought a DS Lite, I'd strongly consider picking up a new model as long as it had at least one significant improvement, as well as a combination of the best features from the DS and DS Lite (DSL's longer battery life, brighter screen, compact size, DS's control/feel, color selection, etc.). However, I've never purchased an updated model for a system I already own (the PS2 would be the only exception, as my old one broke), so I'd be reluctant to start now.
Or a significant price reduction could do it (as I could always donate my DS to my sister).

GB, GBC support is a good one. That would be big for me as well.

The only thing I don't like about my DS Lite is the start and select buttons. They just seem really awkward in size and placement. That's pretty much the only thing that would convince me to buy another one, because the Lite is pretty much perfect.

-Bigger screens are the obviously choice.
-Better speakers than the DS fat- the DS Lite's speakers suck ass.
-Built-in media features (photos, music, videos, VC games) and expansion slots (like two SD card slots for plenty of space). We already know people won't buy the DS for it's multimedia features because it has plenty of great established games, so why no add some features.
-Make it so that GBA games don't stick out but no biggie if they do I guess.
-AV out to connect to a TV.
-DO NOT make it any smaller... it's the perfect size at the moment.
-Better/bigger face buttons, bigger d-dap, better should buttons.
-WPA support... seriously, what modern day wi-fi decide has shitty WEP security?
-A price point at or under $150.

And Pastel Pink?! Yeah, maybe if I was having a baby girl or something. What the hell is with that color?!My original DS was imported from Japan because that was the only place they sold the Candy Pink color. My DSlite is Pink.
Yes, it was truly stupid of Nintendo to market their handheld gaming systems in colors which appeal to girls.
ANYway. I love the DSlite, but would like the better D-pad which the original had. Then we'd be golden.

Hmm.. memory expansion slot, built in web browser, and wifi pictochat. Provided that I can trade in my DS Lite and no more than $20 for it!
Oh and TBH, I think the Pink DS was pretty smart of Nintendo... I mean, its pretty obvious that it is since it completely sold out. Also on a more interesting note, I've seen more girls with DSes than I have guys.

Same size but larger screens and better shoulder buttons. It would have to play GB and GBC games as well as GBA. It should also be able to make me a sandwich.

It should also be able to make me a sandwich. That goes without saying.

I don't care if it only gets the regular DS's battery life, I just to play my old marioland games again in a backlit screen.

There isn't really anything Nintendo can do to improve the DS. I mean, yeah, there's bigger screens, or screen placement, but by doing so you screw over those with older models.

The DS lite is perfect for my needs. Battery life is great, screens are great and plenty big enough. Love the d-pad and buttons. So there's nothing that could swing a 2nd upgrade out of me.

I really cannot fathom buying another DS unless my Lite breaks (with an impending goal of really rocking both Ouendan and EBA, that may happen sooner than I think. ;) ).
Bigger screen simply will not happen. The touch screen mechanics would be thrown off (imagine having to travel farther distances in Trauma Center, etc.), but more than that, it would look like crap. As was mentioned earlier, the resolution would have to stay the same so your pixels would just get bigger. And that's not pretty. That's exactly the reason that GBA games don't fill the screen on a DS, it would be like zooming past 100% on an image and just translate into garbage on screen.
All of the firmware-esque features are cool ideas, but not system sellers for me (the DS webbrowser? Have any of you actually browser the web on a mobile device? It ain't pretty). When we start talking DS2, then I'm in at launch. ;)
