View Full Version : Phantasy Star I for Genesis
Is it rare or hard to get? Had a friend ask about it and I honestly didnt know. He wants to find it so I thought if anyone would know, it would be someone here.

Mega Drive PSI:
A Mega Drive version of PSI was produced in Japan. Only a few thousand (perhaps as few as one thousand) were made. The game DID NOT have any enhancements, graphically or otherwise. The storyline remained intact. It was made in conjunction with a contest to celebrate the anniversary of the original PSI.

As far as I know, there wasnt a re-release of PSI on the Genesis; the SMS version complete is fairly difficult to come by, unless youre willing to pay Ebay prices.

I know the original Phantasy Star has been ported to the GBA along with Phantasy Star I and II.
Does anyone know if it is worth picking up the GBA version?
I mean, just for that first game because I know that Phantasy Star II, III, and IV are on the Sega Genesis Collection that's available for the PS2 and PSP.

Phantasy Star was a great game that was years ahead of its time. Pick it up. The GBA version is fine, but it just didn't feel right for some reason. Don't expect Genesis level graphics, think a little ahead of NES.
The SMS version is obtainable but can be pricey, cart only is cheaper. Plus, you'll need either an SMS or Genesis with a Power Base Converter to play it.

The GBA version is shoddily done, at best. Seemed to me like they rushed the release without working on some previous bugs; the music is also terrible (although on the real versions, the soundtracks are memorable). My avatar is the second to last boss in PSI.

It was a bad port? That's a shame. I was really happy with the Shining Force 1 GBA port, though that was Atlus rather than THQ.

I thought it played fine, but there is a nasty bug that will randomly delete the only save spot you have available for the game. I turned my cart on a few months ago to find it didn't save my game.
The game is currently reselling for around $40, so I wouldn't recommend that route.

Yep, the GBA version is sadly full of glitches, one I was a victim of. I stopped playing the game after that (was pretty far) because I was so pissed. It is a really good game for its time and still holds up fairly well.

Damn, I have the GBA cart but I hadn't heard of the save glitch. Thanks for the heads up.

On of my favorite RPG's of all time, a christmas present from wayyyy back before I could personally afford 70 bucks on a game...

If you have a game crazy near you, you may be able to pick up THQ's version (GBA) for 4.99. I got one recently via that route. There were a few more as I recall if anyone is interested, I can check it out for ya.

This thread confuses me.
First, I thought Phantasy Star I was only on the Master System, not Genesis.
Second, Phantasy Star for the Master System is actually rather cheap on ebay:

Great game though!

I STILL have my Master System version.....packed away.
I've heard rumors that PSI will see a port to the Wii VC before the end of this year...not sure if it's true or not.

PS is a Master System game and was never ported to the Mega Drive/Genisis system ever. You can get a converter and play PS on your
Mega Drive/Game Gear/Nomad.
Phantasy Star is also ported on the PS2 in a rerelease which is updated in graphics.
There is and was never a PS game for the Mega Drive. The original is really nice in detail but too much to go over.
On the Topic of PS. PSO is really PS4 but a spin off series.
