What do you guys do with your textbooks at the end of the semester? Are there any good websites that don't completely jack you when buying back books? Or is my best bet just trading with someone (via swapsimple.com) or selling them directly (half.com).

MUAHAHAHAAHHAAHAAHAH. Dude this is coming from a College Senior your books are god damn useless.
NEVER NEVER EVER sell them back to the bookstore. Fuck them they are worst than uncle same. They will turn you over and fist you hardcore. You will pay 140 for a book and they will give you like 30 bucks back.
Your best bet....at least it was for me, was to wait until the next semester started then go find people around campus who were taking that class and needed that book and sell it to them.
You will most likely get at least 50% of what the book cost in the bookstore and alot of people still dont like ordering things online yet so its a safe bet.

I've kept about 1/2 of them, and I've sold about 1/2 of them to the college bookstore. Ya, you could probably get more if you sell them on half.com or something, but our bookstore gives us about 50% on each book, so it's not really a ripoff, and it's a lot easier.

Yeah, I never sell back my books to my school bookstore...in fact, I haven't sold any of my books yet. I have three semesters worth of books I want to get rid of.

But CAG stands for Cheap Ass Gamer, meaning one is already a member. We need something to prove that it is CAG and not CAGer and just settle it once and for all.

Hey not to take over your topic Silencer..but I would like to ask this to everyone who comes in, Whats the worst you have been ripped of selling your books back to a bookstore?
Mine was a freaking Realion book the school keeps every single year. They never change book ever.....it cost 149 bucks. I didnt even really open it once through out the entire semester but once you buy it its like a god damn car...the value goes down to 22.50. 22 fucking 50. I swear i was more pissed about them actually giving me 50 cents..... That was the first and last time i ever sold anything to the bookstore.

I always figured we were labeled as "Cheap Ass Gamers" -- Gamer, in this regard, referring to what we are (one who games). It doesn't really constitute us as members of CAG. That's why I said CAGers == Members of CAG.

I can't remember what it was exactly, but I purchased a new book for one of the math classes in my first year. I took it by the bookstore after the semester just to see what I could get back for it (the book was still current).. five bucks. I laughed, walked out and sold it online for quite a bit more than that. Pitiful..
I don't know if they think people are just stupid or what.. does anyone actually give in to such ridiculous amounts?

I generally sell back to the bookstore just because I'm lazy and I hate dealing online. One of the campus bookstores does give pretty good buybacks as long as it's being used next quarter. On the books it gives shit money on it's generally novels and crap only a certain teacher who teaches the class once a year uses.

I keep some of my major books, but I love when I down $130 on a USED MacroEcon book only to have a new edition come out (making it worthless).
I buy online so the screwing is lessened at the end of the semester.

my rules for books
#1 dont buy books for gen ed classes, you can get by without
#2 buy older editions on ebay
#3 just keep em when your done
I actually bought my discrete math book for $55 shipped, US version and newest edition SEALED, when it was 90 used at the book store. Also got the 20th edition of a book for like 11 shipped when the 21st edition was 35 in store.

I always buy from half.com and amazon and then sell on half.com when I'm done.
The Student Government Association set up a book swapping website, but then it turned into a forum and got useless, I only sold one book that way, but it was way better than a bookstore.
The last last last resort is selling to the bookstore, you'll always get fucked.

There are many book stores in gainesville, so they are competitive and not too bad. The buy backs on the end of the semester are actually pretty good, so I usually sell my books that way, even though I would make more on half.com. If I feel im getting really ripped off on a book, I just keep it. They come in handy sometimes.

my college always had a bulletin board near the entrances to the bookstore.
i would always print out lists of all the books i wasnt keeping and list them for 1/2 what i bought them for. then at the bottom you have your number/email a bunch of times printed vertically and you cut it down between them so som1 can just rip it off and stick it in their pocket. makes it easy to find you to buy the books.

Sell them on half.com, you'll make at least twice what the bookstores offers you and it requires very little effor after you've done it once.
Also even if a newer version came out someone will be interested in buying the old version cheap, which is more than I can say for college bookstores.

I usually sell them to the bookstore but that's my last resort (I usually ask friends if they're gonna take that same class next semester).
I remember my one friend bought some Shakespere book for around $11. When he went to the bookstore at the end of the semester to sell it, they offered him $0.75 for it and he took it.

So far I've gotten back 70% of what I paid (after shipping and their commission fees). I would have done better, but one of my books last semester was only available new since it was a new edition.

Sell them on half.com
I bought my books the first 3 semesters, then I just stopped because I spent $100 on a phyco book I never used, and $90 on a book that was about four levels over the class's head, thus we never sused it.
This year my "math" book cost $160, paperback, the school store bought them back in perfect shape for $20. I didn't buy the book. Also didn't buy my History books, I just checked out some of them from the library.

generally i don't even start buying books until a few days into the semester, since i don't like being stuck with books i have no use for. the prof usually clues you in on what books will be relevant by then.
two or three weeks into the semester, the college bookstores in the area completely stop taking returns and only do buy-backs, regardless of when you bought them. i don't know if that's common or not. after the semester, i'll only sell on half.com at this point. 200 dollars worth of books got me a little over 20 one year at the bookstore, and i was done with it after that.

Dude my paperback book for accounting was like $115. Sadly this is a savings over the hardback version. WTF????? They were all out of used copies, which are $85, at the two bookstores I checked.
This farty little book thing that is THREE-HOLE PUNCHED instead of binded for Biology 101 (easy non-major option) was $75. What the crap?

:shiver: I don't know what the fuck is up, but textbook costs have risen at a pace far exceeding that of inflation, and methinks it's the first REAL case of price- gouging (a term often used incorrectly, but I digress).
On a sidenote, you're an accounting major right? Do people just randomly group you with the management majors like they do me? I've also been told that "economics is just like accounting" before by certain people.

No, but that's because we have a pretty big business school here with a wide variety of majors available. Economics is NOT just like accounting, people are retarded. Though I seem to have affinities to both subjects; what about you?
A lot of people here are marketing majors, which is a BS major unless you make yourself stand out. Otherwise, good luck getting a decent job after graduation.

Eh, I took an accounting class and was damn good at it, but all the ledgers an balance sheets...nah. Additionally, I like the economist thought process on profit/loss instead of the accounting view. For the most part though, it's about understanding something very few do, but always love to pretend they are experts on.

What I meant about "affinity" was being good at it, like you said you are. A lot of people at my school who have trouble with economics later have trouble with accounting. I've fared well in both economics and accounting and don't see what all the fuss is about.

Well thanks for saying my major is a BS one ;)
I'm not worried. The prospects in marketing are very solid. BU's average starting salary is $60K, so that's pretty good.
Also, you can essentially do anything with marketing. I can go to law school, get an MBA, work for sports teams/college teams, work for major consumer products corporations, etc. I know plenty of people who've done very well.

You can do all that with an accounting degree too, except there's a lot more demand for accounting. Marketing is a crapshoot unless, like I said, you make yourself stand out. That probably won't be a problem for you, but just saying.

But Half.com is a great place to sell the books, especailly ones in Languages, sciences, engineering, and business. Also post the textbooks for sale on Craigslist or try small flyers on Bulletin Boards around campus. I think CAG should have a forum for text books lol.

I always do my best to avoid the college bookstore and their rediculous buyback prices. Online is better but is much more of a hassle that I never liked either. The key for me was getting to know different people, perferably with the same or similar major. Just hash out a deal to sell them the books outright. Often times it's a win for both teams, as you'll get more money than the bookstore gives out and they'll buy them for less than the bookstore sells them used. Things like facebook only make this practice easier, end of the semester is the only time I really ever check that thing and it's mainly to try and unload textbooks.

By the way, West or Warren, where should I live?
I had to stay in one of the rooms for West during Orientation and didn't like it all that much. Rooms felt cramped, but that's probably true of Warren has well.
Warren is where most of the freshmen stay, so it's great place to be social. It's also right in the middle of campus -- which is great if the majority of your classes are in CAS, but since you are taking classes in CGS, it might be better to stay out West.
I also prefer Warren's food over West Campus, but they are both good dining halls.
If you are the party-type, most of the parties happen out west as well.
I've stayed in Danielsen for both my freshman and sophomore year -- the eastern most point on campus, haha. Rooms are really spacious out here though so that's a major plus.

Yeah, I heard pretty much no matter what the rooms arent that great. I actually heard more parties are at Warren? Is that untrue? West is closer to CGS, but Warren is only ~1/3 of a mile from CGS. I've heard that West has the best food. I have to find out where I ate because the food was awesome. I'm the party type but the not-so-hard-you'll-drop-out-because-you're-an-alcoholic-type. So I dont mind it and will for sure party, but not every night.

Keep in mind if you live in Warren Towers, the Towers and Shelton Dining Hall are like 3-5 minutes away (and Myles probably 7 minutes), if you wanted to switch it up. To be honest, I've only ate at the West dining hall two or three times so I may not be impartial when it comes to judging food.
Parties at Warren? You can't really have "parties" in dorm rooms...most of the parties are even further West than the West dorm rooms... in frat houses/apartments. And there's of course MIT Frat parties across the river (and some out East near where I live).
Yeah, I know all about the MIT parties. Good thing ive befriended a good amount of girls already :) West is probably the best choice for me, but i'll be visiting and staying overnight with my friend at Warren.
