Well just thought I'd post this since its worked great for me. If you live in Canada you will notice how much M$ rips us off when it comes to buying points. For 20 dollars we can only get 1250 points, not even enough to buy two 800 point games (which the majority of games are priced at). Well here is a solution.

Now there is a lot of speculation out there as to whether or not those 1600 points cards work on Canadian accounts or not. So to clear up the confusion here is the answer; they don't. But there is a way to cheat the system as it were.

1) All you need to do is create a hotmail account that states the user is living in the US (including a zip code).
2) Using that account you can then sign up for a new xbox live account, and it will make the location of the account in the United States.
3) Now XBL will ask a few other questions such as the address as well as a phone number (you cannot skip this). Now you could try putting in random info for this, but I prefer consistency. So take a trip over to www.whitepages.com and using the zip and a generic last name (such as smith, brown, doe etc.) do a search. Chances are you will find an address, phone number etc. that matches the zip code you entered in hotmail.
4) You are now done. Go ahead and redeem your code in the marketplace, under this account. It will work.

But what if I want to play games in my main account (I like getting achievements)? Don't worry, if you haven't noticed already all content on the hdd is available to all users. In other words if you download uno in one account, it can be played by all the others without difficulty.

Ebay is a great place to buy these cards, you can usually snag them for 18 - 20 bucks, and these are buy it nows. You could try auctions but I've been watching this for about a month, and all the actions end in the 20 dollars range anyway. As of writing this I have come across an auction offering 1600 point codes (delivered via email) for 15.87 a piece (including a 0.99 delivery fee). Just a quick warning though, if you ever change your Xbox 360 because it breaks down or for any reason, everything that you ever bought will be restricted to the account you bought it with. You will even be forced to log on Xbox Live before being able to play the full Xbox Live Arcade game you bought previously.

From my point of view, the best deal you can get is to wait until the prepaid points card are in special. Last time Future Shop sold them at 15$ instead of 20$ and i picked up 3 of them for future purchase.

You will even be forced to log on Xbox Live before being able to play the full Xbox Live Arcade game you bought previously. Oh I am aware of that. However I don't see an issue since all you have to do is download the content again using that account (since XBL tracks what you have purchased, just in case something like the above happens). The only thing it restricts is the downloading of content. After that you are free to play it on any account.

So the morale of the story is kids, once you create your xbl account write down the name and pass of the account (store it in one of the game cases) so you don't forget it.

Just remember that Microsoft is banning accounts that are created soley to download international content. They started getting stricter after their movie/tv downloads started. Which is a shame considering we don't have ANYTHING in Canada and half of what we have is in French for some stupid reason.

I don't think they would classify this as international content. Since I'm not touching the movie or tv downloads. But I'll probably play a few games on it, just to make it look like its been used.

Never could figure out why companies were so stingy about regions. Half the time stuff in one region never makes it to the other, so its in their benefit to allow those ppl access to it (and in turn make a closed market larger).

It doesn't really matter what you do with the account. The fact is that the account was create fraudulently....

I don't care, good to know it works. Just seems funny that you guys are quibbling over what you can legally do and not do with the account.

None of us really care about the legalities, just telling people that they should be aware in case they lose the cash they spent on the points.

Just FYI, they're not banning accounts like is assumed here. Here's a long quote with some details.

Fortunately (especially for European citizens), the reality is somehow different: according to Major Nelson - Larry Hyrb, Xbox Live Director of Programming, Microsoft won’t ban “foreign” Xbox Live accounts - hence the ones for which the IP address does not correspond to the declared country - but the taken measure is limited to restrictions based on the credit card with which the Live account has been created.

All this means that users will, still, be able to download USA Marketplace exclusive contents with their “foreign” Xbox Live accounts, but only through Microsoft Points cards or other pre-paid cards.

“Even if we are certainly focused on bringing all the contents to every market, USA Marketplace should be limited to the United States,” declares Major Nelson in his blog (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/28/xbox-live-security.aspx). “This means that the credit card coupled with the given address and country will be checked by Xbox Live service.“

And continuing: “Please note that no Xbox Live account will be banned, and every gamertag will be able to use its pre-paid cards and Microsoft points.“
