Hey has anyone heard if this game is coming to the US?

I was watching Gamespot's internet show (See ya Greg Kasavin:cry:), and this game was featured and I must have it.

All that's featured on gamespot are preview impressions, but they never mention if it's coming to the US or not.

Haven't heard much good about it so you're not missing out much. I would rather see "Senko no Rondo Rev. X" or almost ANY other import 360 game based on that.

Wait, wait. If SHIT like "Onichenbara X" comes out here I think it's sensible that something as mainstream and deeper like "Tokyo Xtreme Racer X". I still don't get the lack of a release date for Sylpheed unless I missed it.

D3 said maybe, but it probably will. Other than that game they're making with Digital Extremes, they don't really have anything to publish for 360. They could probably easily come over here for $30, since they're basically glossed over budget titles.

You're kidding right? When I've been told "Onichambata X" is a shallow Hack N' Slash I really think comments like these are insulting when you consider games like "Spectral Force 3: Innocent Rage", " Tengai Makyo Ziria: East Of Eden" and "Senko no Rondo Rev. X".

I have it reserved and I am picking it up. It looks like a fun cappy "B" movie co-op game with lots of weapons and mayhem.

I want to support these types of games from Japan so we can get more of them to cross over to the states. I also purchased Bullet Witch but have yet to give it a try because I am loving Crackdown at the moment. I am planning on giving Bullet Witch a spin after I finish up with Crackdown.

GameBrink gave the Japanese version a 64/100:

Not the best score, but overall it seems pretty fun. With 53 levels and offline co-op, count me in! If this sells well enough, maybe the sequel will get online co-op and some original Achievements.

I just watched the trailer on XBL, and it has one of the coolest lines ever. "They came in a mothership. They'll leave in a body bag." Hilarious XD

Anyway, I'll be picking it up. It's made by Sandlot, and they made Robot Alchemic Drive. One of my favorite games.

Played quite a bit of it. Game's okay; probably a 6 out of 10 (I didn't assign a score). The levels are kind of cool with almost total destructibility, but the whole feel is like some old Dreamcast game -- bad localization, stiff movement, and arcade feel. Tons of levels and I like finding new weapons, but it's definitely a budget title. It doesn't mess up much, but it doesn't try too hard, either. And it's cheesy.

I wish games like this would just spend 6-8 months longer in development to get a little more polish. I always am so interested but I know the technical/control issues will make me forget about it before I finish the game and regret my purchase. I've been burned by too many niche japanese games in the past.

Maybe I'll give it a rental.

So wait is this like....so bad it's good kind of game? No, just plain good.

Games don't have to be released by big publishing conglomerates with multi-million dollar budgets and as an entry in a succesfull western franchise to be fun.

It got a solid 7 from teamxbox. An 8 from GameInformer. 4/5 Gamespy. 6.9/10 IGN.

But you could have found this out for yourself by googling "earth defense force 2017 gamerankings".

If they could afford it, or if the cost/benefits were reasonable, I'm sure they'd did it.

But honestly, there's no way the 6-8 months would be worth it for a game like this.

The game is what it is, take it or leave it.

I mean in general, as in there are tons of games just like this that have good concepts and potentially are very fun, but have these absolutely obvious problems that are just plain ignored.

I'd pay $50-60 for EDF 2017 IF they had spent some more time getting online co-op working, and ironed out the HORRIBLE framerate that i've seen in videos, and added just a slight bit more polish to the graphics (the 2D weapon icons are inexcusable) and I'm sure the controls could use a little more work.

As it stands, I know these problems will pull me out of the experience and ruin a game I'd otherwise have enjoyed.

If you can't enjoy a fun game despite 2D weapon icons, then you don't deserve to have fun.

Not sure. I don't have a second controller, so I haven't seen any of the two player stuff for myself.

From a screenshot I saw, it appears that - at least - the default is vertical splitscreen.

Way to pick out only one thing. I'm saying that things like that seem lazy and there's no excuse for having something like that in a 2007 console release. The lack of online co-op and repetitive missions, also the inexcusable slowdown are the main reasons I won't be buying this one. Have fun wasting your money.

It took me seven grueling hours to beat it on normal.

Here is my Earth Defense Force 2017 Video Review for the Xbox 360. Even though the game is a low-budget game, the gameplay works well and you also get to kill giant ants and robots. What else more could you ask for?

If you like shooters and funny Japanese humor, definitely check out EDF 2017. I know a lot of people are going to skip this title, but if the publishers did have a bigger budget, I bet the game would have even better.

Ty, I also hate when people get real hype over this kind of stuff. It's not like it's something huge and there's 19 threads existing on it. Like when Halo 3 beta comes out, there's gonna be a flood of threads..and that's legite to be annoyed.

But regardless..some people just get mad easily lol

Wow, overreact much? The only person who got "real hype" was the guy who posted below me. Nowhere did I get mad or yell or even scold. I just reminded the OP to use the search function first before posting. This is about the 4th or 5th time he's done this, and looking back at his recent posts all his other threads have been deleted (wonder why?) There's no need to clutter up the console board when there's a board dedicated to reviews. No one's getting angry, just trying to keep this board clean.

I bought it to send to a friend overseas and I tried it out.

WOW was it fun. I played through to mission 22 or so (first red ants mission) and I had a ton of fun playing it. The sheer size of everything is overwhelming.

I will have to knock it on a few points. If I'm standing ontop of a building and I blow it up, I expect some damage to result when I fall. NOTHING happened. I didn't die, didn't bleed, nothing.
??? Yet if I hurl a grenade next to a mailbox, I lose half my life.

Surprised this topic dropped off so quickly. I'm doing a complete reversal of my opinion on this game. Could be one of the top 10 360 games yet for me. I love the sense of scale, and the design of the enemies. The acting is a highlight too. Anyone else have soldiers randomly say things like "Hey, let's go get a bite to eat now" or something?

Mostly because my Girlfriend absolutely LOVES playing split screen. We've been playing a few hours together every few nights. She gets absolutely terrified/screams at the top of her lungs when the giant bugs approach and working with/protecting her in co-op adds a lot to the game. Because of this game she's gotten used to the two joystick aiming system and has taken interest in games like Halo and Oblivion, which I thought would never happen.

EDF converted my GF into a gamer.. wow.

Hmm... to buy or not to buy, that is the question. I should probably finish Lost Planet before I even think about buying another 3rd person shooter, but the collector in me makes me worried that this game will never drop in price so I may as well snatch it up while I can. Oh well, I have real aliens invading my town this afternoon so I best take care of that first.

Seriously, buy it.

There is nothing more fun then taking down a group of giant robots that are 20 times bigger then your character or taking on 100+ giant ants.

I just turned a friend on to this game.

It's hilarious reading the messages he sent me over the past six hours.

- (In response to my message asking him how he is enjoying it): its ok. the voice acting sucks and the broken buildings diseaper, but other then that its ok. 5/10

- (In response to me comparing it to a b-movie, low on budget/high on entertainment) : i don't like b-movies that much

- if u turn off the voices and puts some music on it is actually pretty good. 6.5

- dude i take that back this game deserves an 8.5. I LOVE EXPLOSIONS!!!!!!

I can't wait to expose him to co-op this Sunday. It should blow his mind.

So what are everybody's weapons of choice?

I'm using a Rocket Launcher / Grenade Launcher combo.

I use the Cascade 20(the rocket launcher that shoots off multiple rockets, and reloads fast), and one of the RA model assault rifles. I'd always kill myself trying to use a grenade launcher-- and the homing on the missiles usually tweaks out and hits enemies that are already dead.

Its kind of a so bad its good type of deal in my case. I've taken a break from it though-- the first few days I had it, I played it non-stop. I haven't done any co-op either because I can't get anyone around me to enjoy it as much as I do.

To be honest, its a rental, if you really like it, get a deal on it somewhere and have at it. Its quirky and stupid fun, and probably one of the few titles in Xbox 360 land that I can't compare to a Ubisoft or EA franchise.

Plus I like blowing shit up.

**its not an achievement whore game either.. the achievements suck, i'll never get even close to 1000 on this one**

Rocket Launcher/Shotgun combo for me.

I think they are the second edition of both of them.

I'm being serious. I really do love this game.

You can play it in short bursts or for a few hours, the amount of enemies/explosions on screen is staggering, and it will take forever to get all 150+ weapons.

As long as you don't come in expecting a story or good voice work, you will get addicted after put an hour or two into it.

Like I said earlier, it's like a b-movie. Low on budget and high on entertainment.

This game is great - definately worth the $40. I bought it when it came out, but IMO, I think EDF2 for PS2 has better gameplay and more variety.. (Why they at least didn't include the jetpack girl in the 360 version is beyond me.)

It feels like classic sega or namco arcade-style. My wife and I have been playing co-op off and on since last night. We're at level 42'ish now.

This game would have been such a great multiplayer online game. It seems almost like that was the intention, withte h way the NPC's behave and the icons above them when they talk. DLC/Patch in the future? I hope. :D

I agree wholeheartedly, if there were an online component I'd be up until the wee hours of the morning with you sp00ge knocking out the harder difficulties. Now that I've crushed down the 1000 points in FNR3, I'm going to get back into EDF.

However, without a buddy willing to plunk down some solid time, the harder difficulties (and achievements) will be out of my particular league--unless I farm overpowered insane ranked weapons.

I just got this yesterday (FREE! Thanks yourfree360games!) and it's REALLY fun! Have been playing Co-Op the entire time...we are only on mission 9..but we've done the easy & normal of each mission. We're gonna try and do as many of each mission as possible so we don't have to play this game like a million times..lol

We tried battle mode.. that was REALLY fun. 2 people in a big city..blowin up buildings lookin for each other..and then the vehicles are pretty cool too. This def would of been a great 4-6 player online deathmatch option. Oh well, there's always hopes of sequels with this.

Pretty fun. Up to mission 17 or something around there.

The repetitive all creatures of one type city missions are boring (i.e. ants in city, move to next area, ants, move, ants).

But I've started to see some variety like some beach missions (those are awesome), the hectors which are huge, cool, make massive explosions, etc. The big circle UFO that drops that 4 legger. Etc. And actually the ant fest in the underground caves was a nice change of pace too.

Nice variety of weapons. As long as I keep seeing more environment variety I'm digging it.

Beat it on normal.

I don't think we've ever seen a game that has this kind of scale to it. Its like war of the worlds out there with massive robots / ships / whatever flying around, tons of them at once. At its best moments this game is incredible, and worth churning through the many repetitive parts to get to.

I was just looking over the Xbox Live CAG leaderboards and I was surprised to see so many people have EDF2017 in their 5 most reciently played games. I guess since it can be bought for $20 it should be a no brainer for CAGs.

From the stats on mygamercard.net it is the next to lowest played game on my game list (behind Lost Via Domus) with EDF2017 only being played by 62,148. That's even less than any of the arcade games I have.

I bought the game when if first released, but have just recently been playing it like crazy. It's just so "pop and play". No deep story to follow, simple controls and just plain fun. I actually broke down and bought EDF part 1 & 2 for the PS2 from play-asia. It's hard to go back to PS2 graphics, and there is no squadmate to keep me amused, but the games are still pretty fun.

I heard a rumor that Sandlot is working on another EDF game, but it's such a small, under the radar type game, it's hard to get any news on it.

So what does everyone else think of the game? EDF! EDF! EDF!

But i shouldn't have to play through on the two lowest difficulties...simple as that. Not to mention the game only has local co-op.

What do you mean 'you shouldn't'? It was a design decision. You may not like it, but it isn't wrong.

EDF is not fun IF you believe it to be something that has to be played Rigidly. But the point of the game is that it's freeform.

Want to get some armor increases and pick up some simple weapons? Time to run a stage in easy. Want to actually have to work together with a partner, and plan things like setting up remote gun walls? Inferno!! Wanna have a chance to find a powered weapon, while not being TOO challenged? Go towards medium diffculties.

My little brother and I went through this game SO naturally as we played it. Beating all the stages was never a chore because of number, we found ourselves beating most of them just because we loved the game.

And each difficulty gives you a new wep when you complete it. The final gun was SO worth it. Going to the stage "Crimson" and taking out a swatch of those guys with one shot.... -drool-

This game still makes me smile whenever I think of it, even though it was one of my first 360 games. Heck, when I saw Fable 2's Co-Op, my thoughts on it where "Well, it's no EDF!" How did this small game manage such fun, freeing co-op, when sooooo many commericial juggernauts fail at it so hard?

STORM 1! Promise you'll defend the earth for me!
EDF~! E~D~FFFF!

I wouldn't call that "freeform".

I'd call that "boring".

It's not that I didn't like that game, I actually enjoyed it, even with all the technical failures going on around me. But i see achievements as something that can extend the life of a game in a FUN way...not tedious playing through the game a handful of times. There are plenty of games i'll jump into with a friend (online) on the hardest difficulty and have a blast because of the challenge. This game took both of those options away.

:applause: Then it's not for you! :-#

I started EDF thinking 2 players should just plow through it. And then I thought it would be best to hoard weapons. Then I figured It'd be better to go back to the start, and fight through the harder difficulties of early stages, to get some REALLY nice guns. I figured out I didn't have to play the game straight through, and that ANY way I played it had it's own rewards.

With those 2 weapons, and 2 characters, we came up with varied strategy and varied styles, such as:

Jumping around with Rocket launchers like a drunken astronaut...

Stopping hordes of enemies with weak, high rate of fire machine guns, only to blow away the clumps with rockets...

Same as previous, but replace machine guns with spread shotgun (That weapon was amazing!)

Defeating huge enemies by getting in point blank range, and shotting them into the stratosphere with a shotgun...

Making paths in the caves into safe zones by placing remote guns at both ends, and then enticing the enemy to attack with random rocket shots, until they dashed into our remotegun trap of death...

Sniping distanced hordes and then WATCHING as the enemies who where alerted to you suddenly came at you in a wave of destruction that most other games have yet to mimic...

Getting a friend to ride a helecopter to a high tower, and then snipe the enemy to him, so that they overtake the structure, and then blowing it up with bombs or rockets from far away, and wathcing as every enemy on the tower dies, as you friend pummels back down to earth, amist the green blood..

Each difficulty brought new strats, too. What was oncee able to be one-shotted now needed 3 shots. What could once be contained by 1 player with a max-damage wep now needed both players to control. Where once 1 player could bring down a ship before the hoard reached you, with their trusty sniper rifle, you now needed both players PERFECTLY shooting as early and as swiftly as you could, to accomplish the same result.

I also loved the strat of equiping 2 rifles with long reload times, and switching between them, between shots. This let you achieve a more continuous rate of fire, that at times, just seemed unfair.

REALLY, if having each stage in a game have multiple difficulties, which can change your approach to them ENTIRELY (basically making them NEW stages), seems -Boring-, then this just isn't the game for you!

I remember the first time you get to fight the Ant (Spider? I forget which) Queen. After that long mission, my little brother and I barely had any health left. Fellow EDF man screams "We've found the queen! She's E-NOR-MOUS!", and this had us so freaked out, we just shot rockets into her den. The NPCs charged in, and all we could hear where the sounds of spiders and ants dying, and see the stream of green goop she was shooting. We never even saw HER, it was just a ballet of explosions. When "Mission Clear!" popped up on screen, we let out loud "YEAH!!!"s, as we walk into the room, no sign of the slain ruler, trying desperately to collect the weapon and armor drops.

The only other Action/adventure co-op games this Gen that compared to the scale of EDF, FOR US so far has pretty much been RE5... and that's only in certain instances. Gears 2 tried, but I just don't find human-esque enemies anywhere near as interesting as something with it's our unique shape and abilities. King Spider with 100s of minions > Mutated Brumack or whatever it was... (And lets not even talk about the alien Mothership! Now THAT was an epic battle.)

For EDF, those achievements where just tagged on milestones to the REAL reasons you where beating the game: Weapon collecting! I'd hate the cheevos too, if that's all beating the difficulties added. EDF games rewarded you for beating difficulties back when they originated on PS2 I believe, so this is a case of "yay, you completed something that was ALWAYS a milestone in our series!!"

I think cheevos should always be 2nd place to games rewarding you IN GAME for what you do. That's something that achievements have made most developers FORGET about. Shouldn't an in game reward be reason enough to do something in game, and an achievement just be icing on the cake?

The biggest problem with EDF's achievements, is that Player 2 doesn't get them. That REALLY was a BAD, BAD oversight.

Ouch the last sentence sucked. I was going to play this through with a friend...but if only I'd get the achievements I should probably look for a different coop game ><

It is the games biggest "WTH?!?" situation. It's not fair to player 2, especially when you might spend 90+ hours to beat EVERYTHING, like we did ^_^ Of course, I'd still say the game is worth it for, y'know, the GAME itself is fun, but cheevo hunters might not be able to stomach such a horrid oversight. (I wish they woulda patched that, and added some DLC!)

The thing is, its not the achievements that make the game worth playing, they sometimes make it worth not playing. If we both didn't get any achievements but the game was fun, then fine good times xD. But if it actually takes 90+ hours to get all the achievements, theres a kind of loss or imbalance of reward seeing another person getting achievements and pumping their fists at the 1K mark while the other person just tagged along. (Which could have been solved with achieves for BOTH PLAYYYERRS!!)

I still love this game. Hard achievements or not. In fact I think I'll bust it out again.
