Xbox 360- Streaming videos to TV from a PC [Mobile/Archive]

Do I have to have Windows XP Media Center Edition to do this? Or are there some third party tools for XP?

You don't need Media Center. Just use Windows Connect or Windows Media Player 11.

As said above. Sadly, video playback is more or less limited to WMV and MPEG. Anything requiring a codec (divx, etc) won't play on the 360.

Media Center is an option or you could also do WMP10 or if you have .AVIs you want to watch TVersity will transcode your videos on the fly/send them to your 360.

Not true.

You can use Transcode 360 (if you have Media Center) or TVersity to transcode your movies on the fly for you.

Have you tried TVersity? Wondering if it would be worth it to try and watch all these backed up TV shows on the 360 with my HDTV instead of using Media Centre on my old Xbox in the other room.

Yeah, I've used it and no I wouldn't replace an old Xbox running XBMC with it.

Unlike XBMC, it doesn't have native .AVI support. So what it has to do is transcode the files on the fly with the help of your computer.

Bad thing about that is that it's a hard drive space hog and you lose the ability to fast forward/rewind.

Tried playing around with it last night, but I think my lack of WMP11 (and the ability to upgrade to it) wasn't letting the 360 pick up the shares. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep swapping wires to watch the saved TV rips. =P

I was tinkering with a software called ImToo that transcodes for the zune. It's pretty easy to use but the only problem is the resolution is terrible.

so im trying to use this tversity.. i cant seem to get it to work...

my 360 can already access files from my pc.. i set it up via the zune software..

am i supposed to delete this partnership or something?

Yes. you have to turn off whatever media sharing program or service is already running. In my case, I had to go into WMP 11 and disable it. Then my xbox saw tversity.

The problem is, for me, the transcoding doesn't seem to happen fast enough, after about a minute of playback it starts pausing all the time.

edit.. got it.. seems to be a firewall issue, only works when i disable winfows firewall

was using WMP11 b4, was messing w/ TVersity for awhile. got it to work. i love it. it loads stuff so much quicker

No. That scenario will only let you play wmv files.

Thanks for the help, guys. I installed TVersity, but am having problems with getting it to play. I get a media file in the library, and I can see it and select it on the Xbox, but when I go to play it, the app on the PC gets an error and shuts down. Any ideas?

I've read the FAQ and I exceed all the system reqs.

Could be a codec problem maybe? Does the Divx file work in Windows Media Player?

Yeah, I think you might be right. They work in WMP.

I found a fix on the TVersity forums, but it's kinda scary. Involves uninstalling every codec on the PC and installing a codec pack. The guy had exactly the same problem I do. I don't know if I want to go through all that.

I think I might just upgrade to XP and WMP11. Comp USA had the XP Home upgrade for 39.99 last week. Maybe they or someone else will do that again soon with Vista so close.

I got it to work, but it's way too choppy and gets out of sync. I'm just going to use the 360 for mp3's and leave the videos to the TV-out on my video card.

mine doesnt get out of sync. and im transcoding at 1366x768..

is there anything else that works besides tversity? it sucks you cant ff xvid..

i wish they would add native support for more codecs already....

Yea I'm in the same realm of only being able to streem wmv and when I convert the videos with VLC, it looks like shit! I'll have to check out that tutorial and I've heard of TVersity.

it works and is great except that you cant fast forward xvid's or w.e

Well this does save you time and frustration. Too bad I already went through all that but this program is perfect for my needs. I only got a p4 2.0 GHz without HP so I'm going to play the trial and error game of how high I can go with resolution. I had some HD tv shows off of bittorent but does anybody have any cool streaming video sites since they say this thing will work with live streaming!
