Currently, I believe WB is working on a duo format media disc that will play in both HD-DVD and BluRay players. Could this possibly open up the idea of a game being on both formats on one disc? Would that save publishers money? Would they even want that? What would you like as the consumer? Would that blur the lines of videogame consoles? Being able to play a single disc in both HD systems and even possibly the Wii.

Are they just making one side HD-DVD, the other side Blu-ray?

There wouldn't be any point of having different consoles then

Basically they are laying a Blu-Ray disc on top of an hd dvd disc. Minus all the technical aspects, hd-dvd players will basically start reading a certain depth and ignore the blu ray aspect, and blu ray players will just start on the blu ray disc. I know warner is working on it, as are a few other companies.
HD-DVD/DVD already exists, and companies are working on blu-ray/dvd compatabile discs as well.
It won't really apply to consoles though, as you still have branding and certifications to go through. You think MS or Sony wants a rival logo on a product being advertised for their console?

Possibly, but unlikely. If a game designed for the PS3's Blu Ray would take up more space than a standard DVD then no (you'd need additional DVD discs, which kind of kills the point). It could be possible in some scenarios if the space requirements aren't an issue.
Would that save publishers money?
It depends on how expensive each "hybrid" disc would be. Odds are it would cost a bit more than your standard DVD or Blu Ray.
Would they even want that?
If the developers/publishers could save some money, then yes, they would. I don't know if Microsoft or Sony would be too keen on the issue though.
What would you like as the consumer?
If it saves me money, then I'd probably be for it. If it doesn't, then no.
Would that blur the lines of videogame consoles?
If this were possible then maybe. Having one disc that works on all the consoles would blur the lines somewhat but you're still playing the game on either a 360, PS3, or so on. The software may be the same, but the hardware is not.

360 uses regular DVD not HDVD.

It wouldn't save you money. No matter how much the gaming companies save. They'll charge us more for using better, cheaper technology.
but could the make a duo format disc for Wii and X360? Both use DVD

If some large publishers actually look into this technoligy like EA, Ubisoft and Activision, would be hard for the manufacturs to say, no don't do that. Although I doubt it will happen mainly because they have to approve each game. It would be interesting to see a "hybrid" disc. Also those bluray games are underated, they don't even take much space on the disc yet at all. Its all about the "future" but so far they can fit on the size just like Xbox 360 games.
One thing I didn't even think of is if Nintendo were to "upgrade" their console like Microsoft is doing and did have HD-DVD support aswell as high def. Would through a big curveball into the mix.

I doubt Sony or Microsoft would allow this but I think it would be possible from a technical standpoint. From what I understand about HD DVD (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) it's very similar in structure to a DVD (and Blu Ray is not), but since it uses a blue laser with a smaller wavelength the pits and flats can be smaller on a HD DVD. Since WB is working on a hybrid HD DVD Blu Ray disk it should be possible to make a hybrid DVD Blu Ray disk.

Well if it could play on the different consoles, wouldn't the price add another 5-10 dollars for each additional console it's on for the royality payments to each? So it would be more expensive and nobody would buy it.

No, they don't. Wii games are just on an optical disc.

If this sort of thing could happen, it would have back during the PSone/Saturn days. But it can't and won't ever happen. There is NO way Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, or ANY manufacturer would allow a piece of software to work on both their hardware and a competitors. Every piece of software has to be OK'ed top to bottom (especially since "hot coffee") in order to get published, there are VERY strict rules, from content (example Sony & BMX XXX) to graphics (again Sony and 2D games) to packaging designs (every game for every system must have the same packaging design) - Is it physically possible? Absolutly there are PC/Mac hybrid discs, DVD's with Xbox demos, DVD/CD hybrids, etc. But will it ever happen? No.

This won't happen, but I could see a 360/Vista combo DVD for a given game.

I don't see any of this happening. The 360 doesn't have an intel processor so the odds of a Vista/360 game died. The only hope would have been an Xbox/Windows DVD disk back when both system ran on an intel cpu. And MS made a point of staying far away from this because people were afraid that the Xbox would just be a Windows PC playing PC games on your TV.

Yes. They could easily make a disc that will work on both the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Its called a DVD. Will they? No. Its because MSFT, Sony, and Nintendo make so much money from royalties and such that they won't allow any company to do this.
