Does the Xbox 360 upscale DVD's?

The DVD player in the 360 is not very good anyway. You should only use it as backup. The quality equivalent to a $30-50 retail player (at least over component).

I can't speak to upscaled picture quality.

I've seen upscaling DVD players for under $50, so even that isn't a big deal.

The real question is why would you want to buy a $400 DVD player and hope watching movies on it doesn't wear out the drive? Especially when for about $50 you can get a Bravo D1 pixel mapping up converting player.

Oh and upscaling has to be done through DVI/HDMI or VGA on nearly all devices legally, that isn't just Microsoft. The Studio consortium demands that be how it works.

IIRC, All upscaling has to be done through VGA or HDMI/DVI. Component is simply not allowed to.

If the image that's been going around the internet is for real then a new version of the Xbox 360 will include hdmi. I'm sure it will upscale via hdmi. If it's a deal breaker for you, then maybe you should just wait for the new box.

So far I have only played HD discs in mine, and they look great.

I am not sure what you mean by "better". The add-on is just a dumb drive like the one in your PC. It doesn't process anything. It sends all the data to the 360 to be processed. So a dvd in the Add-on or in the 360 is going to look and sound exactly the same.

One thing you may gain with the add-on though is less noise.

I would sincerely doubt that the 360 would upscale through HDMI...as that would prevent or limit sales of te HD-DVD add-on drive. It would send a bad message if the 360 suddenly upscaled well through HDMI. Upscaled DVDs are the reason that I have no HD-DVDs or Blu-Rays in my collection despite having both HD players.

I played a DVD through my 360 and it seemed to look much better than through my regular DVD player. Could it be because the 360 is hooked up with component and my DVD composite or am I just imagining things?

That would do it. The 360 is a sub par DVD player out of the box. I have had it and a Pioneer Elite dvd player on a receiver and always opted for the pioneer. 360 has way too much noise, in live action it would be more acceptable but this was watching something like The Simpsons.

My PS2 DVD player looked like crap on my SDTV, but for some reason, the 360 looks crystal clear for DVD's, it almost has to upscale to a point

As stated before, it already upscales through VGA. It would be highly illogical for anything to look better with a VGA connection than an HDMI connection, that would limit the sales of the HDMI version. Also as stated before, the HD-DVD drive is just a dumb drive for reading HD-DVDs, it doesn't allow for any additional features on regular DVD.

I would agree with you if I thought Microsoft was banking on the success of HD-DVD and it's HD-DVD player but they are not. They released the HD-DVD drive to take away one of Sony's differentiating features and selling points: the ability to play a high definition movie disc format. The fact is they already upscale via VGA and when/if they add hdmi support they most likely will do the same for that. The only reason they don't upscale via component is because they are simply not allowed.

Saying the HD-DVD drive playing regular DVD's puts out a better picture is like saying different DVD-ROM's for your computer put out varying pictures using the same software. It's impossible. Digital data is the same no matter what reads it. It's what is PROCESSING it that matters. The HD-DVD drive has no processor in it and can do no processing.

If what you are claiming was true, hooking the HD-DVD drive up to your computer and playing DVD's through Cyberlink software should look a lot better than your regular computer DVD drive, which it can't and won't.

The 360 would absolutely allow upscaling through HDMI, unless MS went out of its way to stop it (and that would not/will not happen). VGA was Microsoft's creative/annoying way AROUND not having HDMI.

The difference in picture quality, if existing to begin with, between a 360 using VGA upscaled to 1080p and a 360 using the supposedly on-the-way HDMI upscaled to 1080p would likely not even be noticeable. Even if the HDMI port was the newer 1.3A specification, it would still not be noticable to the vast, vast majority of people.

There is no difference in picture quality between playing a DVD upscaled to 1080p in the 360's DVD drive, and playing a DVD upscaled to 1080p in the HD-DVD add-on. None. Where do people hear this kind of stuff?

I think they look fantastic on the 360 on my tv...better than my sony progressive scan player.
