View Full Version : This is the *first* generation that I am console-less (inconsolable!)

I just had a minor epiphany: part of my recent disconnect with gaming is because.... I don't have any of the new consoles.
Ok, I do have a DS Lite but I'm talking about the new batch... ps3, xbox360, wii.
This is the first time - literally since the launch of the Atari - that I have not had at least one of the consoles from each launch. It's a touch ironic, as factoring in my earnings (a job vs. allowance) and adjusting for cost I have more access to the console of my choosing than ever before.
A component of this problem is that I don't have an HDTV. Another part of the problem is that I am completely undecided as to which of them I want. There isn't one that I want really badly. I wonder why this is.
Who else on CAG is console-less? Are you poised to make the plunge soon?
Man, I feel like Cougar in Top Gun. Should I throw my eagle wings down on CheapyD's desk?

The Wii doesn't need an HDTV to enjoy. ;) ;)

A true cheapassgamer wouldn't have a console at launch and would be busy playing clearance games from last gen. If anything, those of us to have jumped into the current gen should turn in our wings. ;)

I am in the same boat...
I don't like any of the systems really, or rather I like them but find them unneccessary.
PS2 still trumps the new consoles as far as libraries go. GC still scratches the Nintendo itch more effectively than a Wii would.
I'll just keep going through my backlog until something pushes me into this generation.

I don't have a PS3/360/Wii yet. I'm waiting to get a Wii until it's available and there are more games for it.

The second SSBB/Metroid/a price drop appears for the Wii, I'm pouncing.

I'm waiting for a Wii to be available in amazon. Then I could use up the gift certificates that I have accumulated.

Yeah, actually I'm waiting until I find a Wii at Walmart because I can get 10% off there. I also want to wait for Wario Ware and SSB or Mario.

Probably because there isn't much out for any of them. A few good games on the 360 but a lot of those good games are also on the PC.
I personally went with the PS3 even though I don't have an HDTV. The games I want will be on it so thats why I chose it.
Just decide which gaming franchises you like the best and choose a system based on that.

I went with the 360 because it has about 4-5 exclusives I really wanted to play as well as a couple more due out in a few months. It also upscales DVD's which is a nice bonus since my old player couldn't do that. Finally it's cheaper then the PS3 and multi-platform HD games look about the same on the 360 and PS3 so why not go with the cheaper system? The 100$ TRU deal was the icing on the cake for me.
That being said I'm sure I'll get a PS3 and a Wii once they drop in price and get a few more exclusives I want to play.

I don't have a next gen. console yet either....and I'm not concerned about it at all right now. I've got plenty of unplayed games for my PS2 and Xbox to last me for awhile. I didn't buy my PS2 or Xbox until after they had a major price drop.
Just think of it as having the new car bug....it smells good and drives good till you get it home....then you realize it dropped in value a couple thousand dollars when you parked it. Besides, whenever you and I finally take the plunge and purchase the 360, PS3. or Wii....any performance issues will be dealt with and all those overpriced games will be down to less than 10 bucks.....money in the bank, man, money in the bank.
:D Hang in there fellow CAG.

Actually I heard a rumor on gamespot.com that the 360 is due for a price drop this spring. I might bite...not sure.
So far, I'm happy with my original xbox
My first time too. I think I'll wait for a price drop on Wii before I plunge in. I'm perfectly happy with my handhelds.

This is also a first for me since the 16 bit days. High prices and nothing exclusive on any system that I want enough to get any of the 3. Once I see some price drops on systems ($150 or less for Wii, $200 or less for 360, $250 or less for PS3) and games, I'll pick one up.
I realize waiting for those prices will take a while but I don't mind, I have plenty of PS2, XBox and GCN games to play many that are unopened

I've yet to buy a next gen console. I'm planning to buy a Wii as soon as I can find one. The PS3 I'll get eventually, I have enough PS2 titles to tide me over for quite some time. I don't foresee buying a 360 at any point in the near future. None of Microsoft's exclusives have really piqued my interest yet.

I too am console-less, I too have a DS, but mine's fat. And it's not that I'm interested in any games, its just that well, I'm broke. Now let's all point and laugh at the poor kid. \\:D/:rofl:

Of the current gen consoles, I have:
Xbox 360
Wii
DS Lite
Honestly, I hardly ever play any of them. My brother has basically taken over my 360, not even Gears of War and Viva Pinata could keep me occupied. I like the Wii, but Zelda was a bit of a dissapointment and Wii Sports has gotten old. I'm not into DS games as much as I thought I'd be.
I haven't played any of the above consoles for three weeks. I've been playing Dreamcast and Saturn a lot lately, and even hooking up my old SNES once in awhile.
I hate to bring up the old argument about "Well, gaming is just about graphics now", but it really is. Sony is really getting me worried--the fact that they are almost refusing 2D based games like Gradius VI and Metal Slug Anthology. I'm scared that this may cause shmups to die out entirely. The Xbox 360 is nice with the arcade and a few select games, but I just don't get hooked like I do with Saturn games. The Wii is cool, I just think it needs more time to develop.
I wouldn't worry about not having a console. Unless you're dying for some 3D graphics, go back and play some of your old systems.

You have inspired me to hook up my saturn. I love you.

I currently don't have any next gen systems. I don't have that much of a problem with that. I can't afford any of them right now any ways. I'm gaming on a 13" Toshiba tv which I'd like to replace before I get one of these new systems. It does have component imput, so it's not that bad of a tv.
To be honest, I really don't need them yet. I have a huge backlog of current gen and classic stuff to keep me occupied for awhile. It doesn't help matters that a lot of my backlog is rpgs. That and there are several more rpgs coming out for the ps2.
