I have this:

http://videogames.org/html/2600Stuff/Supercharger/images/supercharger.gif

Its a big honkin cartridge for the Atari 2600 that plugs into a cassette player and you play games off of cassette tapes. Basically the Supercharger expanded the RAM of the 2600 from 128 bytes to 6,272 bytes. The games loaded off of cassette tape slooooowly, but the games themselves were kickass with better graphics and more gameplay that any other vcs games.

I own the Supercharger and almost all the games ever made for it. They had a multilevel RPG called 'Dragonstomper'.

Did you play Atari games on cassette tape? Yeah, didnt think so. ;)

*For $5 at a yard sale.

So it plugs into the headphone jack of a cassette deck and the cartridge slot of the 2600?

I think this should have been limited to US releases only…

Novolin Man (SNES)-I SERIOUSLY doubt anyone else has this

Some easier but still possibly obscure games:
Cosmic Fantasy 2-Duo
Exile (1 or 2, I don’t remember which)-Duo
Star Control (Genesis)
Star Control 2 (3DO)
Starflight (Genesis)
Space Wars (PC)

Ones mentioned that I own:

Panzer Dragon Saga
Sacrifice
Silhouette Mirage (had, didn’t like)
Overlord (NES-I think this is the one I’m thinking of-kind of a strategy game?)
Metal Gear Solid (GBC-ie Ghost Babel-didn’t like this much)

I bought it during the great game crash that ended the Atari age, just before the NES came out, and I think it was probably $5 or less.

And yup, it works just like you think it does. The best part is, if you have one now, you can plug it into your cdplayer or mp3 player and run all the game roms off of that. ;)

You'd be surprised at how good the games were. Dragonstomper was a legit RPG, with gold, shops, potions, experience, the whole shebang. There was another game called 'Maze of the Mindmaster' that was in psuedo 3D, think of the first person view rpgs like Eye of the Beholder and thats how it played. It wasnt an RPG, but you stepped thru a 3D maze in first person. I'd say the game graphics and sound were easily as good as early NES stuff, which came years later.

Just had to comment on some of the others mentioned since I posted. I cannot resist a conversation that lets me talk about old PC RPGs.

Dragon Wars: Got it fairly late in its life for the PC. At first I thought it was hard until I figured out to put all my skill points into unarmed combat and watch the enemies die horribly. I assume it was a glitch that made weapons oh so useles compared to bare fists.

Starflight? I would hope most people who are old enough had this all time great! Own the Sega Genesis and PC versions.

Star Control 1 and 2: Had them both. 2 was far superior.

Panzer Dragoon Saga: Have it. Never really played it much. I'm into more classic style RPGs. The last 3 discs have never been out of their sleeves. Had I known it would become so rare I would never have opened it.

Magic Candle I and II (and III as well) are old favorites. Hard as hell (Especially III if I recall correctly) but fun.

Gold Box D&D and Buck Rogers: Have all of them. Own copies of several of the Gold Box games for multiple formats. Bought them yet again when they came out in those CD collections. Had Buck Rogers 1 for both Genesis and PC and 2 for just PC.

Birthright: Had it. I dont' recall playing it for long.

Witchhaven: Got it FREE from EB I think. The guy asked me if I wanted it as they had promo copies. I cannot turn down a free game so I said sure. I probably should have...ugh.

Conqueror 1086 A.D.: I actually really enjoyed this as flawed as it was. Getting Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires recently for my 360 reminded me of this game. Similar style.

Betrayal at Antara....I really liked that game though I always mix it up with the Realms of Arcania series.

Lionheart: Have that too. That's a pretty recent one. I had high hopes for this game. And I loved the first half of the game. The 2nd half...well was there really a 2nd half? Heh.

How about these, all for PC:

Disciples of Steel: One of those "Could have been one of the best ever if not for the bugs" type of games. RPG mostly with gold box style combat and walking around. But you also could raise armies in castles you took over and use them to fight battles. In fact the last battle was a battle of armies. It had a LOT of bugs though. From food not working properly (Which was a blessing I found out as the later CD version "Fixed" this...making you die of starvation all the time after walking a short distance!) to broken quests to the final battle being broken it had problems. In my game during the final battle I was getting smashed. I was down to 1 army. They had dozens. Then they all fled and I won the game. I guess my guys were really scary! Ha! Despite all this I loved it if only for the fact you could get one of your guys icons in battle to look like Dr. Doom and then storm a castle with said guy and if you were smart...solo the place.

Anvil of Dawn: Fun RPG I played through once. I had to contact the company at one point when my game kept crashing. It turned out having too many items crashed the game and I never used the one use stuff like healing potions. Used a bunch and finished it.

Daemonsgate: This was an RPG I think. It came with a VHS tape. I never got very far because every time I tried to leave the starting city I fought enemies 50 times my level and died horribly. Very odd.

Realms of Arkania series: There were at least 3 of these, maybe 4. They are probably not so rare but I had to mention them anyway because they are the only games I recall where your characters could have their boots wear out and get Tetanus.

Darklands: Another one that probably isn't that rare. I have 2 or 3 copies just from buying multipacks in addition to my original disk copy. But another classic that gets ignored a lot.

Twilight 2000: Another of those super buggy games. This game is probably what inspired Jagged Alliance and also had one of the greatest character creation systems ever. Too bad if you didn't remember to make at characters who could speak every language in the game between them you were screwed.

My first PC was 2nd hand from my Dad's friend who had just bought a new one. He's the one that gave me the game along with a handful of other software, but I'm not sure where he got it. It's possible that maybe he got a Packard Bell as a replacement and gave me that pack-in game, since it was disc-only, but I'm not sure, I never asked.

Still on top with my Mary-Kate and Ashley: Get a Clue GBC factory sealed, but figured I'd chime in to ruin some people's attempts at pwnage.

Damn! I thought maybe someone had Munch-Man, but Hunt the Wumpus was my ace-in-the-hole! I even reviewed Hunt The Wumpus in Game Informer's Classic GI years ago. Too lazy to look for the actual issue.

Haven't read though all the posts but I'll throw Ashen for N-Gage. I think I have just about every game they put out (didn't have to pay for any of them and have never played a single one).
I have Ashen. As I used to cover N-Gage for GameSpy a few years back, I have a freaking ginormous collection of games for the handheld. And I actually played them. ; ) I bet Grave_Addiction has Ashen, too. Crappy game, btw.

Seriously though, The Guy Game on xbox.Another game I had and reviewed. It's sooooo bad. Had it on PS2 but traded it in.

Keef the Thief - yes, I bought this at Software Etc (for those that even remember that store). It was supposedly pretty funny. I didn't play it very much. It tried way too hard to be this huge barren environment where you'd get lost very easily and that, to me, equals no fun. I kept it because (a) it was expensive at the time and (b) the box art is very odd.

I bought this at Software Etc.(which is now Gamestop - for you n00bs) too! Played it on my ultra fast 386 DX-33 with 4mb of RAM or something along those lines. It's been so damn long. I still own the game - it's in storage somewhere.

Stupid me should have read the label carefully before spending 20 bucks on this flaming shit NO ONE HAS (based on the number of players online, which is like 5-8 people at any given time!!?!?!)

Okay let me see what I could put down.

Wing Commander Prophecy. Disc 3 of a Starfighter graphics card. 3d game that is with ships and lots of fmv scenes. interactive senarios.

Body Fun. Basically a great game for children./ To teach them about weight. The idea is to grow up and eat right so that you will be healthy when the character grow old. Really nice graphics.

Mario is missing. The disc itself that is with orange writing. I lent it to a freind from along time ago but I count the game still.

The last Dinosaur Egg. You and your dog travel threw time to get a dinosaur egg for your museum avioding the natural dangers to time. Like the character can go a future where the sun is about to engulf the earth or get eaten by dinosaurs.

Rudoras Treasure. A very hard to find SNES game.

Captin Commando SNES???? I brought it for a freind who never returned my games. I forget if it was really Captin Commando but it said something like sho yo jump with a blonde guy with shades.

Anybody own these games?

I had that game, the dos version. It was actually one of Naughty Dog's first games if I remember correctly. I acutally played quite a bit of the game, can't remember much about it though other than my character recieved a torn rotator cuff as an injury :)

The only catch - it has to be something you could purchase (let's say from a store, so we don't get into public domain stuff or something your friend made). Tell us a little about it and include pics (if you can find them).

When you post you can knock out anyone who's game you own (or owned at one time)....

Here's mine.

I even reviewed Hunt The Wumpus in Game Informer's Classic GI years ago. Too lazy to look for the actual issue. .

I actually made a Hunt the Wumpus joke in my first book. It was in reference to a character in WCW during the early 90's named Michael Wallstreet, portrayed by Mike Rotundo:

"Unfortunately, they gave him yet another completely different persona, this time in the form of Michael Wallstreet, evil business tycoon.

The character was based almost entirely upon Ted DiBiase's highly successful Million Dollar Man character from the WWF. Both played the part of the nefarious millionaire who would use his wealth to overrun the company. The primary difference was that Wallstreet had a computer genius cohort by the name of Alexandra York in his corner.

The idea was that York would input all the strengths and weaknesses of Wallstreet's opponents into the program, and the computer would print out an exact gameplan of how to achieve victory. More often than not, this intricate, detailed strategy would involve grabbing the laptop from York and smacking the opponent in the head. Wallstreet and York analyzed opponents, plotted, schemed, and mapped out careers to championships. They laughed in an evil manner. Yes, they certainly enjoyed a good evil laugh.

Alexandra's computer program was a smash. It worked so well she was able to create a stable of unbeatable wrestlers, the York Foundation. The only problem, of course, was that the wrestlers in the Foundation never won. Rotundo quickly tired of the gimmick and left for the WWF to become evil tax agent Irwin R. Schyster (IRS, get it?). Terry Taylor, fresh from being a rooster in the WWF, was brought in to save the situation, but eventually just wound up adding another failed gimmick to his resumé as the "Computerized Man of the '90's," Terrance Taylor. Finally, the plug was yanked on this experiment, and the Radio Shack special went back to doing the only thing it was really suited to do, playing Hunt the Wumpus. "

I was just happy to get a "Hunt the Wumpus" reference in printed form.

Very nice. One of the joys of writing for print is getting your references immortalized. I used to sneak in all kinds of shit just to see who noticed. In fact, I had about a year-long streak where nobody at the mag realized I made the first (bolded) letter of each of the four Classic GI reviews on the page spell a word. I also intentionally misspelled Kracko's name -- a character in Kirby Dream Course -- as "Krakho" one time in my classic strategy guide for it. Come to think of it, I try to insert references into work I do on video and on the web, too.

So what's the story behind the VK Wallstreet name Rotunda/o used for a spell? Was that a dig on Vincent Kennedy McYou-Know-Who? I gotta say I preferred watching Ms. York to Virgil. (by the way, I was an indy wrestler for 4 1/2 years with the likes of Daivari, Austin Starr/Aries, and Mr. Kennedy)

The VK Wallstreet character was about 1997 or so. Basically, Eric (Bischoff) was just doing everything he could to get under McMahon's skin at the time. So he would create characters that would do that (he also made Virgil into Vincent, and later SHANE, if you recall). He also gave away pretaped match results which drove Vince insane, but was completely fair and wound up changing the business (Raw went live shortly thereafter, and has been live basically every week since).

My entry: the Shining Force III Premium Disk (http://www.shiningforcecentral.com/game.php?m=0&g=13) for Saturn.
That doesn't qualify as it was never available for retail purchase.

The only catch - it has to be something you could purchase (let's say from a store, so we don't get into public domain stuff or something your friend made).

LOL I had this game, and guess what? I beat it in 1 day! It was so easy that I returned it to what was known back then as "Computer City" which was I think bought out by CompUSA or just run out of town by them lol. And I got my money back because back then (in 1996) I just told them that it had problems running on my computer and bam, there is my money back :)

I got a gold NES cart.... it says "The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy"

Um, hows about NCAA College Football 2K3? I don't remember anyone one else getting it...
I used to have that "Dizzy" game. Random platformer with an Indiana Jones-lookalike egg, no?

I think the most random games are the Genesis games I picked up a few years ago when I was on a Sega kick. I remembered playing them when I was a kid, so I set out to find them again.

Arch Rivals, Kid Chameleon, Hardball '95, MJ's Moonwalker (still had my original copy), and two 32X games, NFL Quarterback Club and Star Wars Arcade.

A bunch of early PC games. All the sierra 'quest' ones.

EcoQuest: Search for Cetus.
First adventure game I had ever played when I was 10 or so. Even though I spent most of that game cleaning oil from a bird and pumping out polluted water from caves and other stuff... I never equated that to a game meant to teach about ecology.

I remember the box art for Knights of Legend but I don't think I ever had it.

Well the funny thing is this: "Wachenroder" is suppose to be a fairly good Strat RPG albeit unknown, "Arcturus: The Curse and Loss Of Divinity" is an Isometric Action RPG that isn't that old and happens to be Korean.
Can anyone tell me what happened to those B-Movie Adult rated games for the PC back in the 90's?
And speaking of winning there's something out there I'm trying to find with a 90-99% completed copy of a game. Too bad it was never finished in it's current form.
edit: Oh and I own "Para Para Paradise" on the PS2 though I'd rather have "Para Para Dancing", the Korean version of it. Frankly the Koreans songs are fun to FS to without having to stick to the Para Para routine of the other songs.

I remember playing all the way through planet edge. You were trying to restore the moon, and I remember at the end, you restored the moon only to have the earth disappear. The game is really crying out for a sequel. One of the few endings I remember 15+ years later.

Oh wait. I just thought of a game I can throw out.

Burn Cycle for the PC. Factory sealed. I don't know how scarce it is, but the couple times I've checked eBay there have only been one or two in completed auctions. (And it's basically worthless.)

I can't touch those 2600 controllers of yours but I still own Burn Cycle. That game was pretty cool for back in the day. Not a hell of a lot of gameplay per se, but it had cool music and art direction, in general.

Gotta miss those days of a VERY super-imposed live actor in front of a static CG low res background

Top Gun I *believe* i played... that sounds really familiar. That was shareware, though, er no?

Minor tangent: anyone here ever play a game called Beast which was a two player ascii graphics game where you pushed around lines of blocks to crush your enemies (big H's) or to crush e/o. coltyhuxx,

There may have been a shareware release of the game, but I'm not sure. The version I had was a full version purchased in a store. I did a bit of searching and found a link with some info on the verison of Top Gun I had.

http://www.mobygames.com/game/top-gun/release-info

It was the DOS version I had. If you click below the cover pic where it says "9 more" the page shows several cover versions. Look at the back of the DOS box cover and you can see the in game graphics (left pic = take off carrier shot, right pic = gameplay).

I had forgot the game was actually vector graphcis...whew, them were the days..lol.

Since noone else has mentioned having 007 James Bond or Alien for 2600, I went to find some images/info of those as well...

Alien:

James Bond 007:
http://www.atariguide.com/3/330.htm
http://www.atariguide.com/3/330b.htm (images of cart and box, I had the silver 2600 Parker Brothers version, box art for 2600 version was similar to that of the C64 one, just the box was more sliver than flat gray).

Finally I think I'm the only CAG with ... Pokemon Pikachu 2, the tamagochi rip off thing.

I still have my Pokemon Pikachu 2. I even have the first one. I'd still be using Pikachu 2 if I felt like getting a new battery... but I'm lazy.

those people who said journeyman project, was that due to it being a pack-in for packard bell pcs circa early to mid 90s?
or did you purchase it?

I had The Journeyman Project as well, and it did come with the Packard Bell that was my first computer. I loved the game.

I really want to find the sequel(s?). I remember seeing previews for it, and then never seeing anything about it again.

PYST (Myst Parody) for the PC

I used to have that. Stupid game. Haha...

The Japanese version of Electroplankton, complete with extra shiny case, box, and headphones! WOW!

Got that too.

As for games that I doubt any other CAG has...

Star Trek: BORG (PC) - An interactive movie game that I actually enjoyed. Unfortuntely, the setup application only works on Windows 95, and therefore won't install on anything newer.

Home Alone (SNES) - I hate this game. Haha...

King of the Monsters 2 (SNES) - I used to like this a lot. Not anymore though...

Hook (SNES) - Its really my sister's game, and she just didn't want it. Now its mine. Never really liked it.

That's all I can think of or find.

I actually owned some of those. I had Keef the Thief for Amiga. It was my free game in some mail away offer (buy 2 or 3 get one free). I never got very far in it but it was ok.

Lords of Magic is actually one of my favorite games of all time, despite the horrible game killing bugs. Step on the invisible square o' death in combat? Good! GAME GO CRASH NOW! Heh.

I think I had Blueprint too (I had like every 5200 game) but can't say I remember it outside of the cartridge label though.

I have Iron Storm as well. I got it when my Saturn was falling out of favor so I never really played it much but it looks really good.

Oddest game I had that nobody else had is probably Spaceship Warlock. I got it in some multipack and was a terrible game but the music "Spaaaaaaaaaaaceship Warlock. Ahhh Ahhhhh. Ahhhh Ahhhhhhh <repeat to infinity>" is forever burned into my brain. My roommate in college left the music playing for like 3 hours straight once just to annoy me. I nearly had to smash his computer.

If it didn't have to be storebought I would say Devil Whiskey. It's a Bard's Tale clone (Original RPG BT not the new one) that came out a few years back and was a very good game. I bought it as a DL first then got a boxed copy when they finally got them made but I don't think they were ever distributed outside the website.

I use to and may still have that somewhere, I remember the music clearly, that would be the first memory of that game, finished it too.

Since some others already acknowledged that they had Phantasmagoria, I'll go with another old game I still have: Cruise For a Corpse.
It is an adventure game where you are a off duty police officer coming on board a cruise and a murder occurs, and now you have to find out who the murderer is by questioning the people on board. You find out about different things going on, secret affairs, and you have to look for clues. The best part of the game are the several endings you get because in the end of the game you have to choose who the murderer is, and if you pick someone else, you get a different ending. I play it every so many years or so, but i'm pretty sure it is hard to find by now.

Best wrestling game ever in my opinion. A little out dated now but for its time (and even a good 5 years later) it couldn't be beat. Best game play (better then the No Mercy easily) and had good graphics and a lot of wrestlers and options.

I wish they could make another game with this engine (thats not muscle man or rappers) with the type of roster VPW had. I think I would probably kill for VPW3 for one of the next gen consoles.

Yeah, VPW 2 is good stuff. I bought it mint in Japan two years ago for under $10. I think they did an admirable job with No Mercy in the US, though. Still, I see your point. It's unlikely another wrestling game will ever get as much love as VPW 2.

A few other PC games I'll throw down (all PC)

Warwind (a mediocre RTS)

Empire - An old turn-based strategy game that was awesome in its day

Star Fleet 2 - A pseudo Star Trek space simulator ripoff where you play as a Klingon-like bad guys; also pretty fun in its day.

Europa Universalis - A relatively recent strategy game, but it would only appeal to hardcore history buffs.

Warwind I had and beat.

I'm sure all of us who played PC games back in the early 80s must have had Empire!

Europa Universalis, had it. Never gave it a shot really.

Carnage Heart. Got it hoping it would be like Omega (an old game where you literally programmed the AI for your tank then fought in an arena). Didn't like it much. If I recall the interface was really bad.

Werewolf: Had it, bleh action game.

8 Eyes: Had this too. I liked it a lot. Played like Castlevania but you had that bird which was pretty cool.

Legend of Mana....I MIGHT have it. I have some Mana game for PS1 still sealed. Never got around to opening it. Haven't seen it in a while and forget which it was.

Daemonsgate I mentioned early in this thread. Had potential as an RPG but was obscenely hard. Leave the city? Sure but then you die. Immediately. I never managed to last more than an hour or so before dying.

Warwind reminded me of another old PC game. Anybody have War, Inc? It was a RTS game where you were a corporation but fought wars with military units. You built your units and could even play (and horribly abuse the stock market). You actually got to design your units in that game which was very cool, though made you insanely powerful if you had lots of money from the stock market.

Albion: Had it. Very good RPG. Cool way they handled guns too. Since you were on that primitive plant the gun was super strong but of course ammo was hard to come by. Plus one of your characters looked like Jesus and another looked like Tom Snyder. And catpeople. Lots and lots of catpeople.

Legend of Faerghal: I have that but got it long after it was new. I remember liking it and the dragon on the cover of the box but that's all.

I had Conquered Kingoms and some other QQP games but don't recall having any of those others you listed.
