View Full Version : Throw down the ONE game you own that you doubt *any* other CAG has!

The only catch - it has to be something you could purchase (let's say from a store, so we don't get into public domain stuff or something your friend made). Tell us a little about it and include pics (if you can find them).
When you post you can knock out anyone who's game you own (or owned at one time)....
Here's mine.
Keef the Thief - yes, I bought this at Software Etc (for those that even remember that store). It was supposedly pretty funny. I didn't play it very much. It tried way too hard to be this huge barren environment where you'd get lost very easily and that, to me, equals no fun. I kept it because (a) it was expensive at the time and (b) the box art is very odd.

Edit: (Throw some pics down or some description of the games you guys are mentioning.. makes it a little more visceral, er no?)

A-10 Cuba for PC. Used to wake up at 6am before middle school and have 1v1 dogfights over 56k direct connect. Here is a RT info bit: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/g/mac_games/a_10_cuba/overview.php
looks ugly now, but it was awesome. As a matter of fact, I don't think it even runs on anything Win2000 or newer.

I actually owned some of those. I had Keef the Thief for Amiga. It was my free game in some mail away offer (buy 2 or 3 get one free). I never got very far in it but it was ok.
Lords of Magic is actually one of my favorite games of all time, despite the horrible game killing bugs. Step on the invisible square o' death in combat? Good! GAME GO CRASH NOW! Heh.
I think I had Blueprint too (I had like every 5200 game) but can't say I remember it outside of the cartridge label though.
I have Iron Storm as well. I got it when my Saturn was falling out of favor so I never really played it much but it looks really good.
Oddest game I had that nobody else had is probably Spaceship Warlock. I got it in some multipack and was a terrible game but the music "Spaaaaaaaaaaaceship Warlock. Ahhh Ahhhhh. Ahhhh Ahhhhhhh <repeat to infinity>" is forever burned into my brain. My roommate in college left the music playing for like 3 hours straight once just to annoy me. I nearly had to smash his computer.
If it didn't have to be storebought I would say Devil Whiskey. It's a Bard's Tale clone (Original RPG BT not the new one) that came out a few years back and was a very good game. I bought it as a DL first then got a boxed copy when they finally got them made but I don't think they were ever distributed outside the website.

And botticus, did you do some bug-hunting for them on Lord of Magic?

No doubt. I saw them at a yard sale and knew they had to be mine. The big chunky antennas are key. :) I love how they look exactly like normal Atari joysticks but just have a base 6 times as thick.
Nice bonus is that each joystick has an 'on-off' switch on the base, so if you forget and leave them on after you finish playing you get to buy new batteries!

I'm not the seller or the buyer, that's just what it looks like and a description. I got it right before it started going for a lot on ebay.
That game was a bitch to beat when I was 2-5. Come to think of it, my mom did most the work... Oh well.

Drop the bowling ball. That hits the cat. The cat starts running. The cat scares the mouse. The mouse starts running. The mouse steps on a pair of scissors. The scissors cut a piece of string. If it weren't for a garage sale my parents had when I went away to college, I'd have everyone stumped. I had a bunch of old Apple ][+ games like Star Blazer, Miner 2049, and Mummy's Curse - all in original ziplock baggies with original instructions. I wish to hell they hadn't done that.
I have pretty much all the domestic console stuff being mentioned from Saturn, PS1 and PS2.
I'll throw out a couple but I'm sure somebody else has them:

Final Fantasy X International
Got it.
King of Colosseum 2
Got it.
- Every North American Castlevania game released to retail (boxed and complete) and some rare imports:
Dracula X Rondo of Blood (Turbo Duo - Japan)
Symphony of the Night (Sega Saturn - Japan)
Had SotN (still have Dracula X, as well as its bastard half brother, Dracula X SNES complete in box), but sold off SotN Saturn some months back. I'll raise you a copy of "Akumajou Dracula," in the box, for MSX, though - and import/US versions of PSX "Castlevania Chronicles." You also have a complete copy of Castlevania Legends GBC, I hope?
Speaking of MSX, I have a working MSX2+ computer, as well as a complete in box (big fuckin' plastic box) copy of Final Fantasy I for it:

I was going to say Superman Returns for 360 (though I think others own it, I don't think anyone else would admit to it)
However, I'll put down Sacrifice from Shiney Entertainment for the PC. Came out in 2000. The game combines a little bit of RTS, roleplaying, action, and adventure into a rather original story driven masterpiece.

Some good old classic PC games in here. Particularly Lords of Magic and Dragon Wars. Anyone remember "Overlord"? I think the released it for NES as well, now I can't even find fan sites about it. There's now a new game coming out with the same name, unrelated, I think.
Another obscure one I used to own and loved was "Keys to Marnon". very few mentions of that one anymore either.

Okay, my turn...
Atari 2600:
007 James Bond - next to ET, one of the worst/most frustrating games on the system.
Alien - 4 levels of hell, 1st was pac-man type, 2nd was frogger style, can't remember any more.
Both of these games were produced during the LATE days of the Atari 2600 when everybody and their brother thought they could cash in on the game craze by slapping together some POS game and associate it with something they owned the license to (yeah, pretty much like most "licensed" games nowadays...lol)'
PC:
Top Gun - this jet combat game had line (think ASCI character) graphics. You could even play split screen with both people on 1 keyboard (one used num pad, other used left WASD keys). It was a BLAST to play. It had a radar and speed/altimeter meters. The "horizon line" was the main way to tell which direction you were heading. You could shoot machine guns and missles. If you had a missle on your tail, you could drop flares to help evade them. Tons of old school fun.
I also owned the original Mechwarrior 3D combat game for PC too. Nothing better than winning by hitting the knee of an enemy mech at 2000 range with 2 shots from an autocannon and dropping them. :}

Of those that haven't been pushed off...
sealed copy of Diablo for PS1
I got a copy of that. I played a ton of it -- great co-op, though I mostly played solo.
not to hate on pc games but this should be limited to console games....there are so many obscure PC games out there, i could just dig out the old Ti-99 games or Commodore 64 games...
There's a good chance I have some of the same TI games in a box somewheres -- Hunt The Wumpus, Munch-Man, Parsec, etc.
I'm surprised no one has a copy of Sin and Punishment for N64. Damn, I've been looking for that game for some time...
Got that. Mint.
My real answer though is a Game Boy game called Quarth which is Tetris if Tetris was a top down shooter. Well worth tracking down if you can find it.
Bought a cart-only copy at EB a few years back, only to find it didn't work no matter how much I cleaned it. I found out too late to return it, too. :(
I was going to say Superman Returns for 360 (though I think others own it, I don't think anyone else would admit to it)
I got one (sent from EA).
Hmm, the oddest game I have is Silhouette Mirage for the psx. I'm sure there are plenty of Treasure nuts around here that have it though.
Got that one, and really liked it.
It's a shame the OP mentioned it had to be for purchase in a store, because I have a preview copy of Kameo for Xbox (not 360) that would probably win. I'm not sure Space Impact for N-Gage was ever officially released, either. I also think Japanese imports are kind of cheating, so I won't mentioned one of them. Instead, for my ONE choice, I'll go with...
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Get a Clue for Game Boy Color! It's even factory sealed.

Ok, here goes:
Breakout 2000 (Jaguar): Actually have two copies of this; one is an original flash rom cart that sadly doesn't work these days, the other is the original. I am listed in the thank you section of the manual - for testing, not buying it. 8)
Tempest 3000 (Nuon): Bought the Nuon just to play this, and sadly it's nowhere near the quality of Tempest 2000 on the Jag or Saturn.
Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands (Saturn): Really wish I had the PS version. I actually did until my house got broken into years back.
Championship RC Pro AM (Genesis): Not sure the rarity, but it's a great sequel to the original on the NES.
Hydro Thunder (Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast): Pretty interesting to see the differences in the versions. PS1 actually has the best audio, believe it or not - the DC version rules over all otherwise.
McDonald's Treasureland Adventure (Genesis): Only Treasure could make a game starring Ronald fucking McDonald good.
Sega Ages (Saturn): No idea if this is rare, but the BEST versions of OutRun, Space Harrier, and Afterburner. Also have the import of Powerdrift, a killer arcade racer.
Super Asteroids/Missle Command & Battlezone 2000 (Lynx): Can you tell I like retro updates?
White Men Can't Jump (with Jag multitap): the single WORST game ever made, without question.
Also have two pinball machines: Whirlwind and Creature from the Black Lagoon. And a WWF WrestleFest machine, which I've converted to a MAME machine (still have the WWF Jamma board, though).

Oh didnt see that it had to be bought in store. I got my arcade machine off of ebay. Um my second runner contributions are:
G-NOME for the PC - it was some mecha game.
Dark Arms - Neo Geo Pocket Color. you wandered around in graveyards and such. An actiony top down game.
Magic the Gathering PC - I liked the purty monsters. Didnt play it much.
Don't think it has to be something you personally bought in a store, just something that was released to retail. But basically we're just messing around here.
And I knew a few other CAGs had to have those 2600 controllers. :)
Space Hulk
Have it.
Star Trek Judgement Rites - PC
Yep.
Tunnels and Trolls by New World Computing
Bought it at EB in 1991.
Let's see anyone have Mig alley for the PC?
Sure do.
I've been into PC gaming since the mid-80s and still have a bunch of old, old ones. Some highlights in the scarcity department:
Space Rogue (Origin Systems)
Knights of Legend (Origin)
Elite (original PC version--played the hell out of it in college)
Shadow of the Comet (an early CD-ROM H.P. Lovecraft game)
Outpost (was supposed to be a great strategy game from Sierra; turned out to be a big piece of crap)
...and plenty of others.
In the console department, the only likely candidate in my collection is Atelier Marie & Elie for the Dreamcast.

I've been trying to remember the name of that game for some time. I played the demo back when it first came out and thought it was pretty decent.
As for my game, I'll have to go with Cosmic Carnage for the 32X. It's not that rare, but it's really bad, so it might be overlooked.

Sorry, I have that. Anyone want it?
If you're seriously giving away Freddie Pharkas, lemme know. I doubt you are but I'll take my chances.
SUBSPACE! I'm sure someone else has this too, but here's one I got. You can still play it for free, but now it is called Continuum.
http://www.geocities.com/ss_victimise/pics/box.jpg
Started back in version 1.20 I think in Turfzone, back in the summer after I saw it mentioned in a PC magazine. Absolutely the most amazing and addictive game people have never played. I've since run around in Powerball forever under this name (Strell, although I occassionally go under Strell the Beer Man!). I keep up with the Continuum scene, talking with Mr. Ekted at a Powerball forum (he was one of the major reverse engineers of the Continuum client).
My husband has that and plays that shiat all the time. He was a very highly ranked character at one point. I dont think its that rare...
Here's my throwdown:
Dance Maniax 2nd Mix (arcade machine)
http://www.konami.jp/am/dmx/dmxmach.html
Its an absolute monstrosity but I love it all the same.
1. What is your husband's name in Continuum?
2. God damn would I kill for a copy of Dance Maniax. I could seriously play that game forever.
Also, I think I might have something no one else has - a demo disc of Diablo 2 from the closed beta. I'm in the original 1000, baby.

Four that come to mind are:
Capcom vs SNK 2 fan disk(DC)
Fighting Vipers 2(DC)
Vampire Chronicle(DC)
General Chaos(Sega Genesis)
Fighting Vipers 2 is probably the more obscure of the four.
I've got some of the console games mentioned in here. I don't even have a PC game collection, so I can't really try on those.
As far as games go, Conan on the NES? Boxxle on GB? Quarth on GB? Nothing in my collection really stands out as hard to get. :(
Oh, wait. I do have one PC game that might qualify. It's the original Mega Man for PC. I don't even really remember what it ran on. Pretty sure it was buggy as hell on Windows 95. And it sucked hard. (Floppy disc with horrendously bad boxart.)
As far as Arcade games go, I have a full sized Enduroracer (Sega) sitting in my garage. Works and everything, and I only paid $10 for it.

Anyone have the biohazard 1.5 demo from Capcom?

I had Subspace back in the day as well, played a little while into the Continuum days but not long after. I mostly played in ASWZ, and this other one I can't remember when that shut down for a while, all I remember is that the board was huge and the firing rate was much higher than normal. Great game, ahead of its time, doomed by Richard Branson. Would be a great addition to Live Arcade.

Own it...and Freddy Farkas, Frontier Pharmacist, mentioned above...and just about every other Sierra Adventure game from Kings Quest 1 up to, jeesh, the last Liesure Suit Larry.
Phantasmagoria was OK....Lots of FMV....I actually preferred 7th guest's mass of minigames though. Now, the Gabriel Knight games....THEY were awesome!
My "hard to find" game would be Magic Candle I and Magic Candle II. They were awesome RPG's, but didn't sell very well.

I'll throw Lords of Magic out there (the bug-ridden original one, not the SE where my name appears in the credits).
Hard to say with old PC titles, I have no idea of their popularity or lack thereof.
I have that...and the SE becuase I thought they fixed it.
I'm going to throwdown: Birthright: The Gorgons Alliance for the PC It was an official D&D game from Sierra On-Line. But I literally have dozens of retail PC games that no one has probably heard of.
On the Console side: Zen: Intergalactic Ninja for the NES.
EDIT:
Alright, I have to put out a few more PC titles that I have, because they made me chuckle:
William Shatner's TekWar
Witchhaven
Witchhaven 2: Blood Vengence
Conqueror 1086 A.D.
Revenant
Betrayal at Antara
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader
Majong Century
Soo Funny!

I didn't read all 12 pages (only a quick scan). But, I didn't see this one.
Pete Rose Baseball on the Atari 2600.
I know on the first page they were talking about Iron Storm. Use to have that game long ago, one of the few that I sold back. Sort of regret it, it's a solid game (or was at the time).

Masters of Monsters - Sega Genesis
I used to love that game. Lots of strategy. Picking to be a Warlock or Summoner was cool too. I still play that today...for nastalgia purposes of course.

EDIT: Joshua - Sega Genesis
It's a religious game, but had over 100 levels. One of the hardest, but best games I have ever played. Still the best puzzle game imo.

I've got Para Para Paradise for the Japanese PS2. Also, a few games from the Densha de Go! series that I got when I bought the system.

Also, that isn't my picture, but that is what the box looks like.
OMG I have sooo wanted that. Nevermind that I dont have a Jap PS2 but the game just looks so cool... I love all the bemani music games.

The very oldest game I have and the hardest at the time for me to find where I live is Xenogears.

I have that one too. I loved most of the games that Renovation released (Valis, Traysia, Gaiares, Arrow Flash, etc). Its a shame that Sega ate them up and they no longer exist.

I have Titanic for PC if it's the one where it's an adventure game taking place an exact replica of the ship...and once you beat it I think you get full walkthrough priviledges/tour of the ship.
Yup!

Swordquest Waterworld for VCS. And I'm first owner on it; none of this "found it in a thrift store" or "bought it last month on eBay" shit.
For some reason I thought that was never released? Was that part of the four game series (Earthworld etc etc) or am I thinking of something else?

Most of the GBA library...complete. Including Wings, Pinball of the Dead, both Doom's, Buffy, and all 3 army men games of which two are incredible rare.
I have most of the Castlevania US released games, including a sealed Castlevania 2 for the original GB.
I doubt anyone has WildC.A.T.S for the SNES, I have it complete, good game and damn fine comic.

FireWorld, I beleive, was the one not released. I could be wrong though. I agree with you that it is one of the ----World games. EarthWorld even came with a crappy mini comic book.

Affirmative to all 3...
Also, let me add a complete Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters for the GB.
Oh yeah, and a complete copy of the japanese Star Wars NES game that Namco produced that was never released in the US.
Remember that classic scene in the original movie where Luke fights Darth Vader inside the jawa's sandcrawler, only to have Vader transform into a giant scorpion in the middle of the fight???? CLASSIC!!!!
I almost just spit my morning tea out of my mouth. Thank you... thank you.
So true - video games of the 80's, in particular, took a liiiiitle bit of creative license, here and there.

Not exactly rare, but thought I'd also mention my mint copy of Panic! for Sega CD. Bought it new off ebay few years ago, but never got a Sega CD to play it on.
All you people with old PC games make me very envious!
If anyone has a complete copy of any Commander Keen, show it! I'd love to get my mitts on one of them, except the GBC one of course.

I won't even get into all the Commodore 64 and TRS-80 Co-Co games...those are just TOO obscure. :)
I have always had a tremendous curiousity in regards to Magic Candle series but I've never played any of them. You've inspired me to go read up on it.

DVD containing replays and bouts between masters of the game (3rd picture)

300-piece jigsaw puzzle (5th picture)

I've had a few of the games that others have mentioned that they also have, but here are a couple that I can debunk as having.
My second pick would be The Journeyman Project for PC.
First PC game I ever owned, but never beat. Got stuck on one of the puzzles.
I doubt anyone has WildC.A.T.S for the SNES, I have it complete, good game and damn fine comic.
Oh yeah, I was a big Wildstorm comic-book geek back in the day and bought this the day it hit retail. I even got it out and played it a few months ago.
I've got several hard-to-find titles, but nothing I doubt anyone else has, so I'll just throw out one of my fav SNES games that I last played, Aerobiz Supersonic.
I also have The Journeyman Project for PC

Another CFTBL owner on CAG? WOW! What kind of shape is it in? Mine is about an 8.5...8-)
my dad bought it only a few years after it came out, so we got it in great condition. he's a big pinball fanatic, so he's kept it in perfect working order. we actually had to replace the motor on the creature hologram not too long ago. it's a hell of a lot of fun, even if i'm terrible at it
