Wombat's Oblivion-Love on the Cagcast is breaking me down. I haven't finished Morrowind's Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions, but I am having a hard time staying away from this game! Should I just bite the bullet, or is it worth sticking around Morrowind and checking out the expansion stuff? I already own Morrowind: GotY.

Thanks for any advice.

Finish the expansions first, although I must warn you that I have always had a bit of a problem with the game freezing in Tribunal when your in the sewers.

I think both expansions are about 15-20 hours and you get some sweet stuff from doing them.

Haven't heard the podcast. I played some of the Tribunal stuff on Morrowind Goty, good stuff, worth your time. Never even made it to Solsteim, just so much to do in that game (I played it in total around 200 hours).

If you want to finish up Morrowind though, you should do it before getting Oblivion. Oblivion has certain improvements (stability, fast travel, a great map) that makes it hands down better than Morrowind. How I like to describe it is, everything you love about Morrowind (except the enemy health bar) is in Oblivion, but most of the stuff you hated about Morrowind are gone. It really makes Oblivion possibly the greatest game I've ever played (though, 35 hours in, way too early to make that decree).

In fairness, Oblivion feels a bit smaller than Morrowind plus the expansions (though, slightly unfair since we haven't seen the Oblivion expansions yet).

So, I'll put it like this. I wouldn't rush to get a 360 for Oblivion, but if you do, you won't regret it one bit (I pretty much jumped to get a 360 when Amazon packed in Oblivion), and I haven't regretted it for a second.

I hated Morrowind, but I've had Oblivion for 3 days and have played it for almost 15 hours. I HATE MMORPGs and stuff like this for the most part, but now that the combat system is no longer based on rolls, and the additional freedom they offer you...I've found myself sucked into it. I say screw morrowind and Get Oblivion.

I have been waiting since release... Morrowing sits on my shelf unfinished... However i did buy Arena at release and Daggerfall and finished both of those games without guides... then comes Morrowind and I put about 40-60 hours in and got sidetracked with summer a few years ago and never came back to it..

I cant wait to play Oblivion but will probably hold out another year or so.

I was exactly the same way. Loved the idea of the open endedness of Morrowind, but the lack of organization made it impossible for me to get into. Oblivion seems to have the best of both worlds, though I think Morrowind purists would disagree.

Heh... I'm literally standing right outside the sewer, so I guess I've saved at just the right place:)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have the feeling I'll never go back if I get Oblivion (already have a 360), and I really want to experience the expansions a bit first.

Technically, theres a health bar on the crosshair when you attack a monster.

Also, I'm in the boat of loving both games. Both have their flaws, both have their pluses.

Oblivion hater, dropped it 3 hours in.

Oblivion is just bland compared to Morrowind. There's no charm.

I beat just about everything in oblivion and decided to try Morrowind on PC, and I can't get into that game. I mean the game starts off and I'm swinging at rats and they take no damage with the cursor right on them. I run into the town and a guard runs up and kills it in one whack. That was about all I could take.

Exactly. I thought Morrowind was one of the worst games I've played. Yet I can't stop playing Oblivion.

the charm's there, you just have to play the sidequests like dark brotherhood and mages guild.

I could only play Morrowind for 3 hours until I could take no more. Way to open ended and anti-user friendly.

Now Oblivion is one of my favorite games of '06. It is way better then Morrowind in everyway imo. Play it now!

I didn't hate morrowind, I thought it was pretty cool but man Oblivion is a million times better. I think it has way more charm then in Morrowind. Also the combat is way better in oblivion, in fact the only thing that prevented me from really likeing morrowind was the fact that I couldn't kill a bloody worm with my longsword and I mean that is just wrong and the whole combat is awful.

I say definatly get oblivion and play it for it is way better then morrowind.

This is true. Put about a half hour into Morrowind. Put a little over 40 hours into Oblivion.

I played Morrowind for 10-15 hours. I saw a great game in there, but it was overwhealmed by the flaws in the game. Oblivion was able to fix pretty much all of those flaws. I've played Oblivion for 80 or so hours and I haven't touched the Thieve's Guild or the Dark Brotherhood and I plan on going back sometime before the expansion is relased to do those quests.

Loved MW...so much i got it for the PC. Night and day difference between the PC version and console version. The difference is the ability to mod. The modding community for TES is top notch. I've read about the stuff they've done to oblivion on the PC...its unbelievable.

Is the 360 selling any mods? I know they sell expansion quests and horse armor, but what else is there?

the theives guild is probably the biggest pain of them all, but it has some pretty awsome storyline stuff that has a huge impact on the elder scrolls universe.

I'm doing the thieves guild now (last guild I need to finish), and it is a pain. Mostly because my character sucks at sneaking.

it's easier if you did dark brotherhood before this since you get alot of sneak items from them.

Already did Brotherhood. As I mentioned this is the last guild for me. I still hate sneaking.

Loved Morrowind, loved Oblivion, though I loved Morrowind more. Morrowind felt immense, Oblivion felt a little smaller, and a little more linear. I couldn't put Morrowind down for a very long time, I put Oblivion down a while ago, waiting for the major expansion. I'll tackle that and the smaller downloadable stuff that I haven't gotten through yet, all at once.

Oblivion kind of jumped the shark for me when I could do 100% constant effect chameleon, sneak, etc and be fairly invulnerable. The combat was not interesting after that.

See, this would be one of the very few reasons I'd get a 360 (yes, I know it will be out on PS3 as well but I'd like to play HD games in HD, thank you very much NOT, Sony). I played Morrowind on the PC and loved it. I liked the immense world and open-ended aspects. Is this not the case in Oblivion? I'm not liking what I'm hearing here ;).

So in terms of getting a 360, it would be for Oblivion and maybe Viva Pinata. I'm sure I'd still like Oblivion a ton even if it departs from what made Morrowind great. Meh, I'll just catch up on my PS2 RPG's and let things shake out for a bit (360 vs PS3, future game releases, cheaper/cooler/quieter 360 design?).

Its still immense and open ended, but it doesn't feel as much so. One of the complaints about Morrowind was the travel, you couldn't automatically fast travel except with the silt striders and teleports and things. You had to hoof it to get to certain places (anywhere that isn't a major city), and while time consuming, you often found interesting things on the way. In Oblivion, you can just click on any place on the map that you've been to, and you'll instantly go there, game time will pass but not real time. Overall, its a lot easier to travel around the world, but that tends to make the world feel smaller and less open ended.

To balance that out, theres no more things like Almsivi intervention, mark/recall, etc. Those would kind of ruin the experience of the oblivion portals, where the further in you go, the harder it is to get back out.

One of the things I miss a little is being able to wear the boots of blinding speed (with resist magic to prevent blindness) and casting a long duration float spell, and just flying around the world.

See, a few years ago when alot of people were like OMG MORROWIND!!1!.. I had an Xbox, and not so many games for it. I worked at Wal-Mart in the time, and Morrowind: GotY Edition was $20, and on top of my whopping 10% discount I purchased it.

I really did not like it. It was just confusing. And weird. I just really had a hard time to follow it, lol :(

How different is Oblivion from Morrowind?? Because I've read a few posts in this thread about some people HATING Morrowind, but absolutely loving this game. Because of that, it makes me wanna purchase this game :(

It's not the core game that is really different, it's the fact that they organized your quests into a nice little log book and the next objective to your quest is represented by a compass so you pretty much always know where to go next. The fast travel was nice, but not a deal breaker and I found myself prefering to walk around anyway in Oblivion to see what I could find.

You don't have to fast travel though. If you choose not to, you can walk everywhere just like in Morrowind. At least this way there's a choice for both sides of the issue.

What did you not like about Morrowind? Oblivion has some big improvements that help guide you, so you won't feel as lost. So, if you hated Morrowind because it dumped you with practically nothing in a small city with a package and said, go, this helps a bit.

But, as Mr. Unoriginal said, the core of the game is still there. Even with fast travel, you still will have to walk in the woods some (something I love doing). The combat is better, but it's still an RPG, you have to make your character stronger. You still have to talk to lots of people if you want to find lots of the fun side missions.

So, it depends what you didn't like. If you have a free weekend, it might be worth renting get a feeling if you like the changes. In 10 hours or so, you'll have a good idea if you like the changes or not. If you do, then get it. If not, then you won't waste additional money on it (that, or wait for a price drop, and then take the plunge).

This is one of the best games I've ever played so I find it hard not to whole heartedly recommend it to anyone over the age of 13 (not sure how many under 13 gamers will have to tenacity to fully enjoy it).

Ah, see, that was the best part of Morrowind. I had no trouble getting around once I had those abilities. I think I may have even made some custom gear that allowed me to float around forever (it has been a LONG time since I played). You can't do that any more?

Well I know I didn't give Morrowind a fair chance. I may have played 2-3 hours and I was like ::CLEARLY ANNOYED::. What Mr Unoriginal said actually makes me a bit interested in this game. I love when a game is very organized and they pretty much tell you "K go here and___". I just hate games where you have to guess where to go..then you travel all that way and find out it's in the complete other direction. :(

I'm going to wait for this to hit PH, then I'm going to picked up a used copy of it at EB/GS because it'll be $20-$25. Hopefully by then, there will be another awesome sale :)

And also, I like RPGS. I don't mind talking to every single person and walking in everyones house and being up in their business and whatnot. I just hate starting a game and it's pretty much like "K, go have fun! TTYL". That's how Morrowind felt to me, and I hated that oh-so-much.!

Thanks for the responses!!

Played Morrowind (PC version...came with a video card) 8-10 hours, just couldn't get into it. Too much to do, was overwhelming.

Haven't played Oblivion yet, too scared from Morrowind. I know Oblivion is "better" and "improved" or whatever. Just don't have any motivation to pick it up. Maybe when they do the inevitable rerelease/GOTY edition/whatever.

For reducing file size, there are several things you can do...

1. Don't save over other files. Start a new one every time and delete the
back files before you load the latest one.

2. NO autosave, it fragments the save similar to fragmenting on a CPU.
See #1

3. Close all doors behind you. The Game has to remeber what doors you left
open. Besides, you weren't raised in a barn.

4. Leave things alone. Don't take small things from houses. Try not to take
anything from houses. The game has to remember what it was programmed to
have and where it went. If you must take things, you might as well loot
the whole house.

5. Don't leave things lying out in the open. Use a crate, sack, barrel or
permacorpse. Too many things left in the open results in an Overflow Loot
Bag, which has a tendancy to erase items it was supposed to store. If
you're concerned about items disapprearing from normal crates, sacks,
chests, barrels, or even permacorpses(it rarely ever happens), just buy a
lock spell and lock the container.

6. To get rid of things you don't need, kill a generic monster (kagouti,
cliff racer, etc.) and put all the unwanted items in it's corpse. rest for
three days in a different area and the body and it's contents will dis-
appear. By "different area," I mean a new loading cell, an are the game
has to load up. It won't disappear if you stand by it.

7. Dispose of corpses as you go along. Too many dead creatures and
humaniods eat up valuable RAM.

8. Sleep for 3 days at a time in bed before you save. That will clear the
game of bodies you forgot to dispose of.
