WFAA.com (http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa07018_wz_wiiporn.2073d3ef.html) has apparently only just noticed that the Wii and the PS3 are capable of accessing the Internets. The station's crack team of reporters has also discovered that there are lots and lots of pictures of people, you know, doing it on the Internets. Put six and nine together, and you have this week's example of mainstream media making much ado about nothing.

But these machines aren't just hot among kids; they're also compatible with sexually-oriented Web sites.

"Quick! We don't have no news at all to report, what shall we do?"
"Durr, I heard them thar Why and Playcube 4 systems have internets!"
"GREAT IDEA! THEY ARE PORN MACHINES! BULLSHIT A STORY AROUND THAT!"

This is news worthy IMO. Clueless parents should know that if their kid grabs the browser for the wii that means they can surf the net and access any site they want, including porn. I'm sure there are some parents who don't even know there is a browser on the thing.

What sort of parental controls are there? Article infers they aren't all that great.

At least on the Wii, there aren't controls on the browser's content, but I think the console's parental controls can restrict access to the browser itself. And the browser isn't pre-installed, has to be actively managed. The fact that the "Internet Channel" is on the channel screen even when they don't have the browser installed should give them an idea.

I almost feel bad that the first thing I accessed with the Wii internet browser was porn.

I am part of the problem.

Agreed, this is a legitimate concern that parents should be aware of if there is no good way of parents censoring content. I've browsed around some on the Wii, but I've never checked to see if there were parental settings specific to the browser that would allow specific sites to be blocked.

Parents should do the parenting. Not Nintendo or Sony.

AFAIK, there is no site-specific blocking, but then again, that would be a monumental task to have to block any potentially harmful site out there. A more robust filtering application would be needed to make that feasible.

What parents can block is access to the Wii Shop, and the Wii channels themselves. If a parent locked down the Wii Shop channel, there wouldn't be a way that their kid could browse the web at all since they wouldn't be able to download it.

Nintendo has done enough to protect kids with the Wii, they can't censor the entire internet just because some horny 12 year old wants to see some boobies.

As far as the PS3 is concerned, I have no idea what, if any, their parent controls are capable of. If an underaged kid was given a PS3 by their parents, I have a feeling that they already have a PC capable of browsing porn sites at their disposal.

Did you read the article? It's basically trying to say that the porn industry is trying to force their way onto these browsers and steal their children's innocence while trying to innocently play Wario Ware. They make it seem like you can't access porn with browsers on the PC and that this is a new phenomenon.

That's just an informative picture to help parents reflect upon their parental values.

Best part:

Young kids get it. In a blog, one child boasted, "The first thing I thought of when I downloaded the Wii browser was also porn."

What's worse: Some porn sites are advertising they are "Wii Friendly." Their screens have been reconfigured to fit the Wii and the Playstation 3. If your kid knows a site is "Wii Friendly" then the parent has already failed.

I read the article. Of course it's going to sensationalize, but that particular article doesn't really seem that bad. It says (paraphrasing obviously) 'Hey you can get to porn sites with the Wii browser. In fact some sites are touting that they are designed to work well with the Wii browser. In other words they are targetting Wii users.'

It even has this bit:

"That's why it's so important to read into and do research and background checking before you invest in it," Schroeder said. She studied her daughters' Wii to identify the built-in parental controls.

Basically saying, "Parents need to know what their kids are into."

It's common sense that the internet is full of porn sites and that browsers are their gateway regardless of the platform. They're just capitalizing on ignorant people that don't pay attention to what their kids are doing. It's a shocking report along the lines of the "PSP gives porn to kid at school!"

porn isnt what people should be worrying about, parents should cut back on the violence and slack on the nudity control

You guys realize the Wii's browser is the trial version, they could still have parental controls in the full version that cums (pun intended for this thread) out in the Spring.

Ahh, those were the days. Looking at boobies on the Dreamcast web browser. Of course, internet porn was a lot better back in those days. Now, it's all politics.

The web browser doesn't even COME ON THE MACHINE.

Come on, parents. Just don't let the kid fucking download the browser from the wii store. It's not that difficult... rather than complaining there's no "cyber-nanny" or anything.

And somehow i feel like the "child" WRITING IN HIS BLOG... already knew about porn on the internet.

What's most awful is how riddled with errors this article actually is. I mean everyone knows you can't play Guitar Hero on the PS3.

In seriousness though, the fact that anyone can consider a $250 piece of tech, let alone a product that costs double that, as "a kid game" is retarded.
