I just got a firewire card for my computer (Buy.com + GCO + Rebate FTW) so now I'm going nuts transferring stuff from those DV tapes to my computer. Right now I'm using Windows Movie Maker to capture the videos, and it's saving them as WMVs.

Now I'd like to make DVD movies out of these (you know, stuff that will play on a normal DVD player), but I assume there is some other step I need where I convert the WMV to some burnable DVD format.

Is there some built-in Windows way to do this, or is there some sort of program I need? I googled around a bit but I came across some shady looking sites that didn't offer much help (most of them were about makeing "backups" of DVDs).

I have Nero on my PC so I guess I have the final step taken care of. But what do I need to do between capturing the video and burning the DVD?

Windows does not come with DVD authoring software, but if you have a DVD burner you probably have something. Nero should work. I created AVI output from Movie Maker (best quality) and then used the Sonic My DVD LE software that came with my PC. "My DVD" allowed me to create a menu including motion for the menu buttons for each clip created in Movie Maker, encoding it to MPEG2 and burn a DVD.

Now I have both Roxio VideoWave and Pinnacle Systems Studio to import the DV and create DVD in one software package. For me Pinnacle Studio (V9)works better.

Yup Nero does it thru Nero Vision (I have Nero Vision version 4.0). I'm not 100% sure if WMV will be just as painless to convert to playable DVD format as AVI, but I can't imagine it'll be any different.
