I did play the original one on NES for about ten minutes. I smoked a cigarette and some guy punched me to death. That's about all I remember.
I'm kind of interested to check into the series -- mainly because I enjoyed Hideo's work in Snatcher so much!! But, there are a few remakes and sequels. What version/sequel etc etc would you recommend I get if I were to get one? I'm not terribly interested in story continuity at this point, especially since it sounds like there isn't very much.
I have pretty much all of the consoles (except for PS3, so the new one is out for me). I'm also not interested in the PSP versions.

MGS3:Subsistance, its a great game plus you get the original msx versions of metal gear 1 & 2. If you dont like any of those, the series isnt for you.

I wonder how many people lie about playing certain "popular" games but really haven't. Like Metal Gear and Final Fantasy.

You aren't missing anything, the MG games are style over substance and were immediately destroyed once Splinter Cell came into being. They're for Fanboys only.

I would assume not many. Why would you need to? Self Esteem? Its not like lieing when someone asks if your a virgin.. Anyway I myself have not played Metal Gear, a friend gave me a copy of Metal Gear Solid for PSX way back..played for about 5 minutes and never played it again. I did the same thing for Splinter Cell, stealth games are just not my cup of tea.

Well, that is your opinion. I enjoy both series, as they both are very different.

I just watched my friend play splintercell on my xbox (they buy all the games as none of them own any consoles;) ) anyhow... that game series i'm also new too. it looked pretty cool. i always hear raves about MGS1 but i fear it may not have aged well. certainly in the graphics dept (i'm not a big fan of 3d on ps1)

I loved that game with those crazy dogs.

I suggest looking into Twin Snakes, Substance, and then Subsistence like someone earlier stated. Thing about Metal Gear is the stories are some of the best around, but the gameplay isn't that great.
Splinter Cell is a different game and has greater controls. The stories are good in Splinetr Cell, but no where near MGS. I prefer MGS much more than Splinetr Cell, but thats because MGS is that good. Splinetr Cell is a great game, and you will have fun playing it. But MGS just gripped me more. I started playing it at Twin Snakes was gripped there. That was about last year.

I loved and beat Solid on the PS1 multiple times. I've tried my hand at both Splinter Cell and its sequel Chaos Theory, and hated them both. It's just not my thing.
Am I going anywhere with this? I don't know. Just play a 3D Metal Gear. Any 3D Metal Gear. Just do me one favour: if you get the stealth camouflage, place some C4 on the back of a guard and run your ass off. For me.

And being a fanboy yourself, you should know.
Like others have said, get Twin Snakes (MGS1) for the Gamecube. Substance (MGS2, impossible to find for the PS2, but under $10 for the xbox), and then Subsistence (MGS3).
Play the MGS on PSone. That one has better voice acting and music than the Gamecube remake.

I've never played any of the MGS series, either. I may be in the market for one of them once my other PS2 pile has been completed. I've got MGS 2: Sons of Liberty and MGS 3: Subsistence on my want list, simply because they received the highest reviews.

Metal Gear for the NES was one of my fav titles back in the day. (Still got it complete, with the fold-out map and everything.) I've beaten it several times. The story was a little vague in places due to the NES limitations, but there was a novelization that I have that really fills in all the holes, and is a great book. "Oh no! The truck have started to move!"
Metal Gear: Snakes Revenge (also for NES, which I still have complete) was, in my opinion, a bit more difficult. I managed to beat it once, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first game.
Metal Gear Solid (PS1) was a great game, and really surprised me by the depth of the story compared to the NES games I had played up till then. I lived in this game for weeks, and me and my roommate would compete by seeing who could beat the game fastest.
The last Metal Gear game I played was Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (GameCube) and it really adds to the story of the PS1 original. I kinda agree with 62t about some of the voice acting and music being better on the PS version, but the graphic improvements make the GC version my personal choice. If, as you say, you are not a fan of PS1 3d, I would recommend the GC version. It is alot better on the eyes.
I've only had short play-times on MGS 2 & 3 at a friend's house, so I can't really comment on these.

You know that 'Snakes Revenge' on the NES was not a true MG game right? It was not developed by Kojima or his team. The true sequel to Metal Gear was a Japanese only MSX release and is available for the first time as a bonus on the MGS Subsistence disc.

... haha you should definitely try it if you are at all into the RPG scene. And as for MGS I myself have never played the PS one... I do own the one where Raiden makes an appearance on the PS2. It was alright nothing spectacular imo.

Thanks, I did not know this. Kinda makes sence when I look back on it, though. I never thought it was anywhere near as good as the first one, and always found it difficult to get into it. If I remember correctly, I think the only way I could get interested in finishing Snakes Revenge was using the Game Genie to cheat.

Here's some idea of what Metal Gear Solid is like, in case you were wondering. There's a couple of spoilers here, but nothing game-threatening.

talk about hypocritical. You state one game is for fanboys then show you are a splintercell fanboy. my personal view is that until chaos theory splinter cell was a sham. You stepped on a bug fisher! thats it mission failed. Metal gear solid you could play with the option of game over if you are ever seen. I had played this way on extreme and won and the expierence was a whole lot more satisfying than failing a mission for something stupid. Chaos theory was fun tho since they took out most of the bullshit mission faileds.
