http://dvd.ign.com/articles/813/813943p1.html
To anybody still uncertain, Heroes on HD DVD is an excellent example of how the high-def format can enrich the content of a show - from the show's Tim Sale artwork to its well-integrated effects. A top-notch transfer.
The Bottom Line
If you haven't seen it - see it. If you have - see it again. This HD presentation is not to be missed. It is - in point of fact - fairly heroic in itself!

Oh Bay, you so retarded.
Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted - nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you - I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.
As a director, I'm all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.
So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks!
So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!

Wow, I actually saw an HD-DVD player ad along with Heroes' release next week. First advertising I've seen from that camp. Too bad when people look at the BB ad for the coming week, they'll see the season alone costs $99.99. Ouch.

Hey guys posted this in the BB next week ad posting but thought you guys would like to know.
I flipped through next weeks CC Ad to see if we would have a deal on Heroes and all i saw was that the regular dvd edition is 37.99 and it comes with a deck of cards, and a coupon for 5 bucks off a t-shirt on nbc's website. Further checking of our system showed that there wasnt even a listing for the HD-DVD version. So who knows.
Heres to hoping that target does something but as it stands FYE looks like he best route.

Picked up 10 titles last night.
Lucky Number Slevin
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Fast and the Furious
Unforgiven
Corpse Bride
The Bourne Supremacy
Clerks II
Blood Diamond
Doom
V for Vendetta
And with that, I've picked up all already available non-combo HD DVD releases that I had sitting in my "To Buy" catalog.
Brings me up to 26 titles total
Next paycheck: Combo discs.

Unleashed as well.
Universal "downgraded" those two in March to HD DVD only. My local Best Buy never sold any copies of AoD on either version, so they've got five combos and five HD DVD only.
Warner announced they are dropping some day and date releases down to HD DVD only starting October 2nd. Happy Feet, The Departed, Superman Returns, and Letters from Iwo Jima spring to mind immediately. I think there was maybe four more titles.

Nice. I just hit 26 as well today with one of the same movies you bought (Bourne Supremacy). I was going to order Blades of Glory since it wasn't terrible and to support the Paramount decision, but it has a higher than normal price despite not being a combo, so forget it. Yeah I was going to do the same intially. But after getting some rest, I decided against it. Price was a major contributor to that decision.
I was at Sams Club earlier and was scanning the cheap DVD section and completely forgot that The Ghost and the Darkness was a Paramount release. If handled properly, I could get behind that.
DVD Empire is now taking pre-orders for both Anchorman and Old School for November 27th.

A major player at Warner just stepped down (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Warner/Warners_High-Def_Disc_Guru_Exits_Post/893). It's interesting because you could look at various quotes by him and determine one of two things: 1) He favored HD DVD. 2) He favored neutrality.
Between this and the rumors that Warner would be jumping to a side that have been going all week, I smell Blu-Ray exclusivity for Warner.
That said, when it comes down to it, the HD DVD side has deeper pockets to pull from thanks to Microsoft, and it's somewhat difficult to imagine them letting Sony run off with a studio right away. It's probably not worth losing sleep over, as it's obvious at this point you will have to buy both formats eventually anyway.
CocheseUGA
08-24-2007, 10:29 AM
If Warner goes Blu-ray, then the format has been decided for me. They've got the most titles I'd want to see in HD, and unfortunately I'm not stable enough to own both formats.
KaneRobot
08-24-2007, 10:37 AM
One thing I didn't mention, he may also be stepping down because that Total HD concept seems to be dead in the water...he was big on that.
Really, there are a lot of reasons he could be stepping down, obviously the most glamorous would be a loss of exclusivity to one side or the other, so that'll get the most play on the forums. Some people are expecting an announcement today, some people think at CEDIA in a couple of weeks. And some people think the whole thing is bullshit and nothing is going to change.
Look at it this way - the Paramount announcement came out of nowhere. Seems like most of the time this "highly anticipated" stuff never comes to pass...for better or worse. We'll see.
terribledeli
08-24-2007, 12:29 PM
I'm not losing sleep over it. As KaneRobot alluded to, this stuff is so much better in our minds than reality. I remember when Moore stepped down it meant the demise of the 360 and the XBox department in general. Two months later and its still full speed ahead.
I wouldn't be surprised if he stepped down because the studio wanted to stay neutral. He may even end up on the Paramount lot today. My other favorite theory is that he got caught screwing his assistant.
A couple of quick notes off the top of my head.
The MSRP for both Anchorman and Old School is $29.99. Which means with my wife's discount will be under $19. And you have to wonder even further what Paramount was thinking making Blades of Glory MSRP of $39.99. It would be nice if later Dreamworks/Paramount releases would keep a stable $30 MSRP.
I watched Corpse Bride last night and it looked amazing. If you ever need a reference quality movie, this is the one.
So what is everyone looking forward to this coming Fall/Winter?
Excluding the major releases (Transformers, Shrek The Third, etc), I'm looking forward to see what Warner does with The Omega Man. And Universal just announced Pride and Prejudice (2005) for November.
And of course...
Blade Runner Collector's Edition Set.

Doesn't look like much, but once we're a couple weeks into September we're likely going to start seeing a few big names pop up for Christmas. I expect several more to be added to my list. Of course, if Warner goes Blu-Ray all bets are off.

That wouldn't make any sense.
Even though Warner is neutral, they were about as pro HD-DVD as a neutral studio could be.
Releasing movies only on HD-DVD, constantly bitching about how interactively wasn't up to snuff on the Blu side, delaying their movies because the Blu-Ray version was far behind the HD-DVD version.
Why would they go exclusive to that?
And I don't believe $$$ will be a huge factor. They are currently at the very top of the pie with 30% of all HD movie sales.

The problem I have adding to my collection is price. For DVDs, usually $10 is the magic price point for movies I've really wanted to see. For HD, it's $20. When I go into Moviestop, I find that the only ones that are around my magic point are ones I already own on DVD. At this point, I have no desire to upgrade any of my existing titles, only add to the overall collection.

Oh, I agree it wouldn't make sense on the surface. On the surface Paramount's decision makes no sense either. There just may be more at work here.
Here's the MS response (via AVS) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=896377) to Bill Cunt's accusations of MS paying out to get Paramount on board. Frankly, if that money WAS exchanged, it wouldn't shock me in the least if Toshiba was the one paying. I know some people may look at them as Sony-lite or whatever, but it's not like they wouldn't have the resources to pull it off regardless.
Speaking of Billy, who recently (again) tried to defend himself from people calling him out for being a shill...this is making the rounds now. From a Blu-Ray put on/sponsored "10th anniversary" event for HTF and thedigitalbits:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/eventpics/ema2007/ronandbill01.jpg

It wouldn't make any sense at all. The deal would have to be so massive that it would be almost unbelievable.
There is bad blood between Warner and Sony. Sony outbidded Warner for MGM in 2004. Warner filed a complaint with the SEC back in 2002 over Sony trying to strongarm the DVD Forum. Warner was 100% behind HD-DVD before going neutral along with Paramount.
What does Sony have that would make Warner do such a 180?

Hi-Def Digest gave the PQ a 3.5/5. I also know of a couple of reviewers over at DVDTalk that were a little disappointed by the PQ quality (Digital Noise, Edge Enhancement, etc)
Either way it probably is a step above the SD release and the extras are nice. I'll still be picking this up Tuesday.

Hell of a deal going on right now at Amazon...problem is no one is sure how to get it to work every time. Here's the thread at AVS:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=897932
The title is buy 3 get 1, but I got it to work with buy 2 get 1. I bought Mallrats, TMNT, and Shaun of the Dead for a total price that, after the 19.95 off and my 10% discount, wasn't much more than buying a combo disc at Circuit City. The problem is, no one is sure what combinations trigger it yet. I added random titles several times and got it to work more times than not, but basically...you may have to experiment.
Also, the deal is ONLY visible when you get to the final order confirmation screen, so don't just look at your cart and think it didn't work. Watch for a 19.95 discount on your final total...if that shows up, it works.

Ended up placing 2 orders. On HD DVD I ordered Blood Diamond, Casino, & Shaun of the Dead. After free shipping, buy 2 get 1, and the 10% off discount it came to about $11 a movie. I also made an order for a few Blu Ray titles. It seems it is a buy 2 get 1 on certain titles. On AVS they are starting to create a list of what works and what doesn't.
This promo is quite a bit of work! It seems to work primarily for 4 HD-DVD movies at a time, with the following caveats:
has to be in stock
no pre-orders
should be $19.99 or less in general, with a couple of exceptions.
I got the following to work:
300 combo
Blood Diamond
Superman II: Richard Donner Cut
V for Vendetta
It kind of sucks that a lot of us already have a number of these titles. For me, 300 would be a double dip (have Blu-Ray already), and I don't really want Blood Diamond.
I know the following does NOT work:
District B13

It works as a buy 2 get 1. You just have to have the movies they are counting towards it in your cart.

Split? How does that work?
You have one guy who collects all of the money and buys the Prime account.
That guy can add 3 "family" members to his Prime account who also gets Prime access for their accounts.
Send the guy your first name, Amazon email address and birthday (just the month and day, not the year. Something for security purposes.) so he can send you an invite.
Then that guy will send you an invite and PM you his name and birthday (so you can accept the invite) After that you have Prime access for as long as your inviter does.
No security risk besides the guy canceling and taking your money but hopefully you do it with a trustworthy CAG who won't fuck you over.

Pretty good.
It's a little grainy but I think it goes good with the atmosphere/time era of the film.

It's a live concert HD-DVD.
Also, how much and where did you get Mulholland Drive? I haven't seen it yet, only five minutes or so and I couldn't make anything of the story from that small snippet.
It's from France and I bought it from Xploited Cinema. That was back before I knew you could usually just order from Amazon.(whatever country you were looking to import from) for less.
I paid $65.90 for it and Terminator 2 with Priority shipping which was an extra $5.35 (could have gotten media mail for cheaper) so I ended up paying around $35.63 for Mulholland after it was all said and done.
A little expensive but hey you pay the cost to get stuff that's unavailable in America. Plus it came from (I think) Minnesota so the shipping was pretty lightning speed.

I'm sure there's a missed number here or there, I'm just a bit worried.
Universal announced "I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry" is due out in November, which is a little odd since its still playing at my local theater. Any thoughts on it? I enjoy Kevin James' comedic gimmick, but I'm afraid Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish (to a certain extent) has sorta ruined Sandler's crazy yelling characters for me. I tried to watch Billy Madison the other day and I couldn't get into it even though I loved it back in high school. He was just too good in Punch Drunk.
How about "Talk to Me"? I wanted to see that in the theater, but it went over like a fart in church down here.
I'm picking up Blades of Glory tonight. Its a bit cheaper than I originally thought it was going to be with my wife's discount and HD special features sell me on any release.

Nice, how'd you print out the covers? At home or at a place like Kinko's? Also how much ink did it eat up?
I used my printer at home (Dell AIO 924) on highest print quality on Canon photo paper.
I've printed a good 6 HD-DVD covers and a standard DVD size cover and my color ink level is down to about 70%. I started at 100%. Consider how little printing I do (now since I'm done with college) that doesn't bother me at all.
I originally was looking into it to replace the imported Terminator 2 and Underworld covers since the spine is reversed but I found a few covers that I liked a lot more than the originals, such as 300 (http://home.att.net/~j_gengler/300BunnyDojoB.jpg).

So far it has not meant anything. Clerks II is on HD DVD, along with Pulse and several other Weinstein movies (And I mean several. Weinstein hardly releases anything for HD DVD). Don't forget, Paramount and Dreamworks are now HD DVD only. Studio support for each side is getting around even now, and Blockbuster soon may stock more HD DVD in their stores (I would be shocked if they didn't by Christmas time).

The Optimum UK release was what I was referring to, in regards to his post.
That release will be the first HD release of the movie with English subs. The French Ultimate Edition had HD/SD versions of the movie, an extras disc and the soundtrack. None of the films in that version had English subs.

Just got done watching the Dawn of the Dead HD-DVD. I dont know why this movie gets such a bad rep. Yes its a very loose remake, but its really good. I had a question though. Someone on here mentioned that two of the characters from Dawn of the Dead were in Land of the Dead. I looked on IMDB and I didnt see any characters with the same names. Anyone know which two people survived (by the end credits, it didnt look like any of them would've).

I wasn't aware it had a bad rep. In fact, most people usually preface the "all remakes suck" statement by adding "with the exception of Dawn of the Dead..." Sure there's gonna be the dissenters but when even rotten tomatoes has it rated at almost 80%, I wouldn't say the movie get's that bad of a rep.

It usually gets a really bad rep from fans of the original. Mainly because they took all of the social commentary/character development out and turned it into an action flick with zombies.

Yeah, I suppose. There's a lot of people that can't accept that, while based on similar plots, they're entirely different movies that can exist together. I'm a big a fan of both movies not because of any deeper social meaning but just because I like zombie movies and they happen to be 2 of the best.

I never understood the complaints myself. Hell, most people also shred Land to shit as well. When push comes to shove, I feel that Synder's effort in Dawn was far better than 300.
I guess zombie fans hark back to the golden age and nothing but golden age zombie movies will do. Which is a shame.
The remake was an excellent companion to the original film. Its sorta funny in a way, without the remake showing that zombies (and to a degree Romero's name) could still bring in some cash...Romero wouldn't have gotten the funding to create Land.

Well, that's because most people never seen Day Of The Dead and their eyes glaze over as soon as they think of zombies that are anything more then death machines.
My beef with Land is that it was never meant to be a Of The Dead movie. It's was originally titled Dead Reckoning which makes alot more sense since most of the movie is focused on that vehicle thing.

So far it has not meant anything. Clerks II is on HD DVD, along with Pulse and several other Weinstein movies (And I mean several. Weinstein hardly releases anything for HD DVD). Don't be too hard on Weinstein, they're a small studio with limited resources. But to be perfectly fair, they, along with Lionsgate, have released the highest percentage of their titles to their chosen format. The last time I counted (which, granted, was a month or two ago), Lionsgate had control of 350 films, and had released 27 on Blu-Ray, for a release percentage of around 8%. At that time, Weinstein had control of 113 titles, and had released 11 on HD DVD, or 10% of their catalog.
To put that into perspective, MGM has control of around 3300 titles, and has only released 11 on Blu-Ray. The exact same number of titles as Weinstein, but a pathetic 0.3% of their available catalog. Seeing as they actually HAVE money (that TWC doesn't), they should be ashamed.
The one thing you really CAN fault Weinstein for is they don't Day & Date anything. If they do decide to grace us with an HD DVD release, it's ALWAYS ~3 months after the DVD hits. That, to me, is unacceptable.

One minor plot hole ruins the entire movie for you? I didn't think it was what Ocean's 11 was, but that's because of the Julia Roberts expanded role.

It's getting tiring seeing people trot out the "gamers don't want HD movies" quote from the HD DVD honcho, as if it's some ghastly faux-pas that will make people hate HD DVD.
The number of people on this board who care about HD DVD is miniscule. And you've seen the Blu-Ray attach numbers and that recent story about how few people use the PS3 for Blu-Ray, or know it's a Blu-Ray player to begin with. He's fucking right. Gamers want games. It all depends on what condition the original master is in or how good of a job they do on restoration.
Unless you mean how it points out how the movie magic is done (Robin Hood carrying in a stuffed deer, the difference between sound studios/outdoor locations/night filter so they could film during the day in The Searchers)
Either way it shouldn't take away the fun of watching them.

That being said most new movies suck .
What an awful situation that puts me in . the same flaws existed when those movies were in the theater too. just that people didnt notice it as much because they didnt have anything to compare it to. which puts the studois in an awkward position. leave the film noise and keep the film original. or try to filter it out which usually leaves the film a little blurry.

I know some people are pissed about lack of lossless sound on Transformers, but I couldn't care less. I'm sure they'll eventually double-dip anyway for those who are really annoyed.
125 titles have been announced for Q4 '07 at CEDIA today and it should be a solid lineup (keep in mind that includes the +-70 that are already announced, so we'll be seeing +-60 new announcements in the coming weeks):
Universal, Paramount Studios and Warner Bros announced a broad slate of more than 125 titles for 4th quarter, featuring blockbuster new releases and catalog titles that delivered box office returns of more than $3 billion.
Not many specifics yet unfortunately, here's a few bits...the last thing is kind of neat if you're into that stuff:
They just mentioned Knocked Up; Bourne Ultimatum; Shrek III and the Harry Potter series set.
Here is some additional news...
With the purchase of any new generation player, you get two
titles included in the box, 300 and Bourne Identity.
Also, if you purchase any of the new Toshiba HD-DVD players
plus the new Star Trek TOS: Season One boxed set, you
will receive a Limited Edition remote control that looks
like the Star Trek phaser. This phaser controls any of the current
Toshiba HD-DVD players."

Picked up The Adventures of Robin Hood and Million Dollar Baby in addition to my combo discs last night.
So was there any mention of a Shrek trilogy box set for Christmas? I'd be willing to take something similar to the Mission Impossible set.
I checked Nip/Tuck with my wife's discount and it comes to about $52. Not bad, but I don't know if I feel like spending $50+ on a blind buy.

Just noticed that myself. Though, it'd be interested to see how well the new players would sell if Universal included it much prior to retail release.
Then again, I don't think Talladega Nights's early release really affected much of anything based on the numbers of pre-owned copies I see at my local Gamestop.
Speaking of Gamestop, does anyone's local Gamestop carry any pre-owned HD DVD releases? I've never once even seen the add-on pre-owned.
I've added some older titles on my list of things to pick up.
Mallrats (Though I've heard it doesn't have all the features from the DVD Rogue Pictures release. Please correct me if I'm wrong)

That is really odd. I just watched Mallrats last night and originally in my post above re: the CEDIA stuff, I going to talk about how disappointed I was (not with the features, but with the miniscule jump in PQ from DVD to HD DVD). After viewing the entire thing I softened on it a bit, but I will definitely say if you already own the 10th Anniversary disc that it is NOT a necessary purchase. This is my first HD DVD purchase I kind of regret. That said, if you don't have either of the previous DVD versions, obviously the HD DVD is the one to get.
The main thing missing from the HD DVD is the longer cut, along with the lengthy intro to the longer cut. There may be a few middling things here and there, but that's your main difference. And for some reason the original Special Edition DVD is the only one with the PiP commentary (10th Anniversary and HD DVD have the commentary without the PiP). Oh, and Mallrats has the best commentary track of all time, FWIW.

That was the selling point for my wife, especially on the Daffy Duck one.
I was surprised to see that Casablanca also contains some Looney Toons cartoons.
Its a nice touch to show the influence of these films.

Off the top of anyone's head, is there a difference between the upcoming HD and BR release of the Blade Runner briefcase set? I just looked at my Amazon account and for some reason I've got the Blu-Ray on order. I must've had some reason for ordering it for that format. Are any of the discs double-sided?
If everything's the same, might as well go HD for the bookmarking feature.

Before box set bonanza on my next paycheck, I'd like some more advice.
I'm picking up one of the Matrix box sets, but I'm not sure what one.
Here's some basic info.
1) I've never seen any of these films, outside of pieces of the first one.
2) As a result of one, I do not own the Animatrix in any shape or form.
3) I've got about 400 MB left of space on my 360 hard drive.
I know there's only about a $10 difference between them, but I just don't want to drop the extra (albeit a small amount) cash and realize I wasted my money.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
KaneRobot

It's tricky. The Animatrix is (seemingly to most people) actually better than the second and third films, so it would be nice to have a hard copy. However, it's NOT HD whether you download it or not, so it almost seems like a waste.
Also take into account that the discs in the "ultimate" set are double sided, while the trilogy set is single-sided.
Personally, I bought the trilogy set because I already had the Animatrix from the old DVD ultimate set. That said, if I didn't own it already, I would have likely bought the trilogy anyway, watched the downloaded version (and if I had to have it on disc, bought the standalone version which can be had for next to nothing). Then I'd just pray for an HD version of it to come out later.
....this hasn't been much help. D'oh.

I don't know if the animatrix coupon is still good to DL on live...and 400 mb isn't a lot of space...If you have stuff you can delete, and the free animatrix is available on live go with the cheap one. If you can't delete anything and animatrix isn't available for free through live go with the more expensive one. Are you a fan of anime? If you aren't then having those shorts doesn't really make that much difference.

I'm a little disappointed with the PQ on Mallrats as well. It looks alright, definetly better than the S-DVD but the colors still feel a little muted. The one thing I did notice for sure is that the audio, even on regular TV speakers, is crystal fucking clear. A VAST improvement over the DVD. Overall, I'd probably be a little ticked if I hadn't gotten this cheaply as part of the buy 2 get 1 deal from amazon.

Man Hd dvd really dropped the ball on Transformers imo.
Transformers on a combo would have been the perfect disc to completely replace DVD's with. There could have been a whole marketing spin attached to it -"The disc, that transforms!"

Sort of torn on this one (although I love that marketing idea). Yeah, it would get a huge amount of attention for HD DVD if only a combo were released, but at the same time there are ALREADY a lot of new customers to the format because of the Paramount announcement and the recent sales, and I'm not sure if jacking up the price even more on the most anticipated release of the year on either format is the way to give them a good early impression.
Glad I don't have to make these decisions.

I got a $5 Amazon.com gift certificate earlier today. I'll probably put it towards the Nine Inch Nails live disc.
I went snooping around for the Daxter PSP bundle at my local Wal-mart and came across Planet Earth for $58. This was a little unexpected because 1) My local store, despite being 24 hour store, never stocks any high definition format discs. 2) This is about $10 below cost for the set. Even with my wife's discount at Best Buy, it was still about $64.
Needless to say, Daxter bundle can wait...a half off Planet Earth set can not.
Thanks for the input on the Matrix bundle everybody. I'm still leaning towards Ultimate, but I'll go in a little bit more informed than I was yesterday.
