After all of Sony's BS about "Target choosing Blu-Ray over HD DVD"...Target now has the Venturer HD DVD player up for preorder through Target.com. The downside is that the player was expected to be sold at $199.99 though the $249.99 tag could be a placeholder price.
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-8/qid=1191321656/ref=sr_1_8/602-5966993-0459057?ie=UTF8&asin=B000W7O43U

Target.com was never going to change, it was just an endcap in stores for Blu-Ray players at christmas.

Considering I plan on getting an SED at a 100" size it matters to me. And don't mention to me projectors, they're shit picture quality wise. I believe fixed displays will have always sharper pictures though.

I can't believe you just said that. Wow. What was the last projector you saw? At school science class? My projector throws out a sharper more vibrant image than any of my friends HD sets. That includes my uncles $7,000 70" Toshiba dlp, and my friends 70" Bravia. And my screen is only 100".

So you are essentially saying digital cinemas can't compete with the picture quality of fixed pixel set-tops?

Well I can see your logic is way out there, with comments like that, but I will just say that 1080p is more than enough resolution all the way up to 120-130". But it really depends on how close you plan to sit as well.

i gotta agree w/ thrust. ive seen some swanky home theaters and they all used high end projectors. the screens themselves can easliy cost more than standard HDTVs w/ projectors costing more what most people pay for cars, e.g.Sony's VPL-VW50 $5,000 - DPI's Titan $50,000 retail.

if youre referring to something like an optoma xga projector which is mainly for presentations, youre probably right. but thats a very different animal than home theater projectors.

SED is pretty much dead in the water IMO.

If I can convince Canon it won't. I will beg Canon on their doorstep if need be. I refuse to go back in pq from CRT to LCD, Plasma or DLP. If you can find me a picture tech. that can match CRT like SED does I have no problems. My concern is the complete quality of the pic not imperfect blacks like all these new picture technologies are.
Propeller no thanks. I'd rather spend double that for a fixed display. I've always consider theater projectors inferior to home tech too. It's like having something high res. out of focus, even slightly. Take when you put in a pair of contacts or glasses for the first time with a new prescription and how clear everything looks. You don't get that with projectors, just fixed displays.

Pan's Labyrinth was my favorite movie of last year along with Curse of the Golden flower.

But only if you like Guillermo's other works, especially his foreign work like Devils Backbone. I loved that movie too, wish it would hit HD DVD. Hellboy was nothing special but Blade 2 was swell.

Nothing, in my opinion. Huge disappointment after all the hype I saw going into it. I liked Blade 2 and LOVED Hellboy so I'm not sure that director affinity had much influence on me here.

That said, a LOT of people like it, and it's certainly a worthwhile film (just not something that blew me away like I had heard it would), so it's definitely at least a safe rental.

It's not bad. It's a dark Fairy Tale and when I say dark I mean VERY bleak. I'll just leave it at that and let you decide if you wanna see it. I will admit it's a bit overrated.

It nails exactly what it sets out to be, a return to fairy tales of olden days, bleak and violent.

It really was a grand slam in that sense.

At CEATEC Japan 2007, when it was Universal Pictures' (Japan) turn to present on stage, a slide provided by Universal Pictures Japan seems to suggest that titles such as Babe, Back to the Future Trilogy, Casper, Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws and Jurassic Park are among the major catalog titles that will be available on HD DVD in the future.

This is possibly the first time that Universal Pictures/Studios had publicly displayed these titles to be among some of the future HD DVD titles.

Must have "Back to the Future" first. :D

I hope it has HD DVD exclusive extra's and more then that of the BR's. As for "Jurassic Park" it's fun but such garbage compared to the book in how they rewrote it for the screen. Hammond is not a nice grandfatherly character, he's a greedy sob and it's the grandson who is smart and thoughtful. In the book, the granddaughter is boy crazy for Grant.

I made a mindblowing deal with a trustworthy guy living in Japan. We are doing a trade where he grabs me Band Of Brothers 1-5 & The Machinist from a second hand store (which he assures me they are in mint condition) for around $100 after shipping and I'm going to buy him A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining and Return to House on Haunted Hill from Amazon for around $100 after shipping.

Amazing and I should have them in my hand sometime around the 16-19th.

And here comes semi official news of the JP, BTTF, Jaws...etc rumor being false:
Marv Levy, spokesperson for Steven Spielberg, was kind enough to speak with us today regarding the recent surprise announcement from Universal Home Video Japan that Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park and Back to the Future would be released on HD DVD.

According to Mr. Levy, "There are no plans to release these titles on HD DVD. It was a mistake and someone inadvertently put those titles into a presentation"

Mr. Levy also mentioned that Universal will be making a public statement regarding this mistake in the coming days.

Blu-ray.com would like to thank Mr. Levy for again speaking with us regarding Mr. Speilberg's films and their future in the world of high definition media.

Because he has a pointless hard-on for Blu-Ray.

None of those are must-haves for me. Like I said, I'd buy a couple of them certainly, but it's not something that would make me buy a Blu-Ray player if they somehow were released on that format.

1st Transformers review (That I could find):

Picture Quality - 4.5/5
Audio Quality - 4/5
Special Features - 5/5
Overall – 4.25/5For this release Paramount went with an AVC encode on to two HD30 discs. This transfer is a keeper! The film grain is kept in check and the image is abundantly sharp. In many of the brighter/outdoors scenes the image really "pops" and is very vibrant. I saw no hints of macroblocking in any of the action sequences and also detected no noise during the viewing of this film. To me, this is the best video transfer I have seen for Paramount on HD-DVD thus far. There is a faint appearance of grain and softness in the darker scenes towards the end of the film, however this phenomenon seems to be present in most HDM releases and really is not a distraction. As far as AQ goes, I listened using the Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) option and it sounded excellent. The Center Channel presented the dialog in a clear and powerful manner, the Surrounds received consistent and accurate action and the LFE was used to perfection as it rocked my basement Home Theater. To me, this was the best I have heard of a DD+ track since King Kong. This release is also loaded with Special Features. I especially enjoyed the “making of” featurette which included some great interviews with the cast and crew. I also re-watched portions of the film with the audio commentary of Michael Bay, which for the most part was quite interesting. I also tried using some of the web enabled Special Features with my HD-A1, however I was never able to connect to the server. My guess is that the server does not go “live” until the release date of 10/16/07. In conclusion this is a very nice presentation, so if you are a fan of this film I can confidently recommend this purchase.

I'll pop in with a few comments.

Transfer looks sharp and detailed. Sound is excellent, much more dynamic than the DVD's 5.1 track, and I haven't gotten farther than the desert sequence.

Disc 1's Transformers HUD is pretty neat. It's a pop up track that features information about the actors or Transformers or vehicles. Cuts in with picture in picture interviews with Spielberg, writers, etc. Not sure if they are the same interviews from the bonus features on Disc 2.

Disc 2 has all same bonus features as DVD. Easter eggs are all in similar locations. Transformers Tech Inspector is a 360 degree look at Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Megatron, Blackout and Starscream.

Nothing, really. I just brought 4 discs up and said "you guys are running a buy one get one thing on these, right?" She said "I think so" and checked for me. She looked through the ad, I told her I didn't think it was advertised this week. No problems at all though, when they ring up the cashier should see a prompt for the B1G1 deal.

I did have her check on stuff that was $34.99 (ie Hot Fuzz) and pairing it with a $24.99 title, and it didn't work. However, it appears any combination of titles $29.99 and lower will work, whether it's a combo or not is irrelevant; it just so happens that most combos are $34.99 there.

Noticed in the theater too. It is in most movies. The reason you dont notice it usually in the theater is because you arent sitting as close as you do at home.

Harsh Times - (Blind Buy, Never Seen It)
Casino - (Blind Buy, Never Seen It)
12 Monkeys - (Blind Buy, Never Seen It)
Meet The Fockers
Knocked Up - (For A Friend)
Assault On Presinct 13

Of those movies I've never seen...Are they good movies or should I consider returning/exchanging some?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I found Unleashed HD DVD/DVD combo at Target on clearance for $7.49...it was the only one at the store. I posted this on the HD DVD deals but it got lost quick...

Casino is a great movie. A little long but great. I've always been into downward spiral stories.
12 Monkeys wasn't my cup of tea at all. Watched it, hated it, sold it.

Then again, you should go back to CC and grab Next/The Warriors for poor little Sporadic until he can come up with the money. ;) Japanese Band Of Brothers and Machinist broke my bank.

I went to pick up Transformers x2 last night at CC, but the line was wrapped around the store and people were NOT moving, I got fed up and left. Hopefully the deal is still going tody...if not, oh well. I generally watch movies once lately anyways

Liked them all, but 12 Monkeys is a very hit or miss movie. It's a little odd and kinda jumps around storywise if I remember right. Assault on Precinct 13 was ok, but I'm not sure if I'd actually watch it enough to buy it.

Just watched Return To House On Haunted Hill. Pretty shitty movie but it's worth a rental just for the novelty of picking what happens.

It was pretty funny how when I picked to save the map instead of that guy about 40-50 minutes in, everybody ended up shooting each other and then the credits rolled.

Thankfully you can just press chapter back button and you get to pick again.

i had the same problem last night. I stopped watching Transformers half way through on Tues night and then continued last night. As soon as I fired the disc up, it hung. I didnt know about the cache clearing, so I just restarted my 360 and unplugged the Ethernet and it worked fine that way, bypassing the update (that I had already downloaded.)

White Noise part 1 and 2 coming to HD DVD:
A sequel to the original 2005 sleeper hit, 'White Noise: The Light' was initially expected to hit theaters early next year, but now Universal has confirmed it's bringing the Nathan Fillion-starrer directly to HD DVD and standard DVD January 8 instead, the same day the original 'White Noise (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/whitenoise.html)' is set to make its high-def bow
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/Universal/White_Noise:_The_Light_Headed_Direct_to_HD_DVD_Thi s_January/1087

I didn't see part one, but I saw the trailer for part 2 and it looks a heck of a lot more interesting than part one. I also can't find a trailer for it, but you can read up on it here:

Starts with guys watching a football game then the field being empty. "What do you do after you watch football on your HDTV, watch movies in HD with the HD-DVD player from Toshiba" They then showed Knocked Up, 300 and Transformers playing and talked about the upscaling even making your DVDs better.

I guess they have a new nickname for it too, the "ultimate HD machine"

For you guys getting the lock-ups with the add-on with Web Enabled discs, is it just randomly locking up during playback?

Mine seems to freeze up whenever I try to add a bookmark now or try to delete one in Transformers. It only does this on the 360 add-on though. If the only fix thus far is to delete the drive's memory, do I have to delete everything in the memory? Is there anyway to choose and just delete the TF related memory?

Edit: On another note, I did miss the best part of the movie when I first saw it in theatres. I stepped out to take a call and missed the part when they looked for the glasses. I left just as they pulled up to the alley and came in as the guy knocked on the door. Can't believe I missed that the first time.

I was able to make one, but deleting freezes it. I also had to delete everything.

We need a fucking update for the player, pronto.

Also, frys.com has a few decent deals...if you're not buying more than two though don't bother since shipping kind of kills it (but at least it doesn't increase as you add titles). Several of these are in the "get 5 movies for free" category, which is why they are cheap now:

Extra stuff for the Queen disc, which I was leaning towards not picking up, but after seeing that they have put some effort into this disc with the extras, I will:

Eagle Vision has confirmed an extensive supplemental package for the upcoming release. In addition to featuring newly remastered versions of the band's full Montreal concert and their seven-song 1985 Live Aid performance, both next-gen releases will also include a first-ever audio commentary by Brian May and Roger Taylor, newly-unearthed performance footage of Queen rehearsing for Live Aid, a previously unreleased band interview, additional media coverage of the event, and a "Before & After" restoration comparison .

That Montreal show was good, but DAMN I wish we could have gotten Live At Wembley '86 instead. Oh well.

Transformers HD DVD Kicked Ass!!!!
According to a just-issued press release (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/pr_paramounttransformers_week1.html) from Paramount, the HD DVD edition of 'Transformers' sold over 100,000 units in its first day of release, and went on to sell an additional 90,000 units over next six days, making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format, as well as the best selling HD DVD ever.

The performance of the 'Transformers' DVD and HD DVD has demonstrated the phenomenal success of this global franchise," said Kelley Avery, president, Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures. “We’re happy to be kicking off the fourth quarter with a title that clearly shows home entertainment releases are still an event that drives consumers into stores—which is a win for both content providers and retailers.” http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Sales/Paramount/DreamWorks/Michael_Bay/Transformers_HD_DVD_Smashes_First-Week_Sales_Records/1093

Its good Transformers is the highest one week title sales wise... but overall 190,000 still isnt that much even in comparison to what dvd was doing by this time, I remember the fuss over the Matrix when it was first released and how it was the first title to break a million units in a week, this is only 190,000...

I love my high def formats though, and kinda like being in the extreme minority sometimes... but loved how software plummeted when dvds hit big

I think it would not be inaccurate to state that HDM will never achieve the penetration that DVD did. There just isn't enough there to offer the mass market that they can be sold on to make the upgrade.

The one and only chance HDM will ever come close to DVD in sales is when/if players become so cheap that they basically just replace DVD players and Joe Six Pack doesn't notice a difference because the players cost the same.

After reading that RE is MPEG-2, I think I'll hold off on it. Hopefully the Japanese version is AVC. Here's some users thoughts and 3 pics of RE if you're still interested in it.

Damn me for shopping on an impulse. If the Japanese is better I'm going to have to drop my German RE copy somewhere.

ASS. I went out and stopped at Best Buy to pick up the Motorhead disc since I didn't want to wait for an internet order...of course they didn't have it, despite checking later and seeing the status on the site as "available at most stores." None in my area have it.

I guess I'll just wait for the Amazon order.

Just got my Motorhead HD-DVD in.

Definitely one of the weirdest releases so far. Comes in a UK style case with no security sticker and a 13 page insert. The video is good but this is a victim of MTV style editing (aka about a million camera changes) along with alot of SD footage of the drummer drumming and a horrible matrix thing. Subtitles seem to be broken or at least I can't turn them on. The web extras are pretty cool. There's news (which hasn't been updated since July), tour dates, photos, fan artwork (everything from rings to custom car jobs) and tattoos.

Well, don't get me wrong if you are a Motorhead fan, you aren't going to get much better then this. It's on par PQ-wise with the Cream HD-DVD once you overlooked the SD drummer footage and it was a pretty rocking show from what I watched. I was just pointing out the stuff that jumped out at me. This is the first American HD-DVD I've seen come in a UK fattie case along with a multi-page insert.

Agreed, 2001 is a beautiful movie but then it turns into some type of hellish stress test in the middle (12 minutes of buzzing, 4 minutes of sirens, etc) followed by some 30 minute acid trip. Good movie but I'll never watch it without fast forward again (at least through the noise parts, I loved the HAL story).

I always say that until stuff is added to the release slate or a deal pops up, then I cave almost immediately. I'm trying to do that now though. Omega Man, Pan's Labyrinth, Led Zeppelin and Queen then I should be done for the year.

hows that corpse bride

Bad.

It's very good PQ-wise but imagine if they took The Nightmare Before Christmas and stripped it of everything good/likable/catchy. That's basically Corpse Bride in a nutshell.

Out of catalog stuff avaliable on Warner's site right now, I could easily recommend Dog Day Afternoon, Galapagos and The Searchers.

Dog Day Afternoon is hands down Al Pacino's best work and it's definitely one of my favorite films from the 70s.
Galapagos is more of the same of Planet Earth, except this time it focuses solely on the Galapagos which is a better IMO then trying to go around the whole world.
The Searchers is a classic John Wayne movie. A little slow, very racist but if you can stand the Duke, it's well worth the money. Plus the PQ is really good.

I blindbought all of those and I don't regret it one bit.

KaneRobot

I enjoyed Corpse Bride, mostly because I did not go in expecting Nightmare Before Christmas. I think it's definitely worth a look (for what it's worth, I haven't seen the HD DVD yet, just the film itself).

It has pretty good feedback (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/corpse_bride/) overall. It's certainly not on Nightmare's level, but few things are.

Something that sort of goes without saying, but is good to be reminded of occasionally:

Check your Amazon gold box every day. I've seen people saying the Star Trek Season 1 box was in there at an even bigger discount than it already is priced at. Combined with the 10% discount (for those still under that umbrella) and it's a pretty solid deal for those interested in it. I doubt I'll buy it, but you're not going to get much better than 113 bucks on that set for quite a while.

My gold box actually offered me the 5 disc Blade Runner set for an extra dollar off. Combined with the 10% it winds up being about the same price as the Warner 25% deal before I cancelled it because of their crappy service.

Well if you have a 1080p TV, it should display 1080p anyway, even if the player only outputs 1080i.

I think the reviews have been ok but it's not much of a step up over the A2, and some people have praised the "build quality" of the A2 over the A3 - as in, the A2 is built like a tank and the A3 feels a little flimsy. I haven't seen an A3 in person so I can't vouch for that.

I am definitely getting closer to making the leap from 360 add-on to standalone player, though. I'd really like to get the A35, as many people have praised the picture being even more detailed than the high end XA2. Price is still about 150 bucks out of what I'm willing to pay, but the way the prices are falling I would expect I'll be picking one up in the summer.

It seems a little pointless to get an A3 if your 360 does 1080p and the A3 does only 1080i. I guess you can get better audio (possibly) out of the A3.

Rumors of a big Warner announcement keep hitting (which probably means nothing will happen, as per usual with "exclusivity rumors"). Supposedly - according to highdefdigest - they seem to be leaning towards Blu-Ray. That's not really what I took from this quote, but read into it what you will:

"One thing that may be changing is our strategy," he said. "When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter."

Silverberg went on to emphasize the Warner's strong Blu-ray sales, noting that the studio's Blu-ray release of '300' is the format's top selling disc. "We can definitely talk Blu-ray," said Silverberg. "We are committed to the format."

I dug around to find out what the basis for all this Warner Brothers exclusive internet mongering was about.

It seems a lot of it is based on some assumption that their contract with Blu-ray expires tomorrow (Oct 31). Combined with the fact that they have let rumors out that they are thinking about going exclusive rather than renew and be neutral. Combined with the fact that it's a pretty well known fact that Subsidies for BD replication costs expire for everyone Jan 1. Combine that with the fact that WB has obviously favored HD DVD so far.

I can see no other conclusion other than if they went exclusive it would be HD DVD.

I think that quote from the exec was basically saying "HD DVD has made us their offer, now we are waiting for BD's"

Microsoft, Toshiba Team to Advance HD DVD Navigation
Toshiba and Microsoft today announced plans to launch the Advanced Interactivity Consortium to extend interactive features in HD DVD.
Agam Shah, IDG News Service
Thursday, October 04, 2007 4:00 PM PDT

Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp. Thursday announced plans to launch the Advanced Interactivity Consortium to extend interactive features in HD DVD, a high-definition format, in an effort to attract more users.

Both companies are stout HD DVD supporters. Microsoft offers an HD DVD player add-on for its Xbox 360 gaming console and Toshiba is integrating HD DVD drives in its PCs. The rival format, Blu-ray Disc, is supported by Sony Corp. and movie studios Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and The Walt Disney Co.

The consortium will be a platform for companies to collaborate on improving the digital home entertainment experience and bringing advanced interactive features, including Web-enabled features, to digital downloads that go to DVDs, PCs, gaming consoles and cell phones.

Bringing companies together will ensure interoperability of HD DVD players and services, said Hisatsugu Nonaka, corporate executive vice president for Toshiba, in a news release.

Microsoft's XML-based HDi development environment creates an interactive layer for HD DVD movies. HDi, supported by the HD DVD players and media, is currently a mandatory feature across players to keep the consumer experience consistent, said Richard Doherty, principal program manager lead of the consumer media technology group at Microsoft.

Microsoft hopes to collaborate with other consortium members on extending interactive capabilities to digital download services, said Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, in the release.

The consortium had no specific announcements related to improved HD DVD interactive features.

The announcement fuels an already heated battle between the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats as the next generation high-definition DVD standard. Sales of Blu-ray exceeded HD DVD in the first half of 2007 by 2 to 1 in the U.S., according to data from Home Media Research.

The consortium includes movie studios DreamWorks Animations SKG, Paramount Pictures Corp., Universal Studios and Warner Bros Entertainment Inc. Universal this week announced HD DVD movies with interactive features that provide access to online features such as bonus scenes and online communities that allow users to dive deeper into the movies.

They essentially JUST formed that group. Heck, during the presentation a WB graphic was shown alongside the other studios/companies involved. Doesn't make much sense that they'd be featured in the announcement and then bail on it a month later. Stranger things have happened though.

EDIT2: $43.45 shipped at HD Addicts (http://www.hdaddicts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=89_90&products_id=744)...but it ships from Canada so it make take a while longer.

I don't mind the combo's either, but I really wish the multi format ones would come in at the same price as the blu ray discs. It should be cheaper to make a dual format then a blu ray disc.

It is cheaper.

But for some reason the studios look at it like giving you added value they think they can charge for. It should change though.

Superman: Doomsday and Justice League: The New Frontier (Toons) 2/26/2008:
Just a little over a month ago, Warner Home Video released Superman: Doomsday DVD, an animated feature based on the comic book stories of Superman fighting the battle of his life...literally! Early in 2008, Warner will continue along these lines with a similar release of Justice League: The New Frontier.

The Justice League release is going to arrive on February 26th, available not only on DVD, but also on the competing hi-def disc formats HD DVD and Blu-ray disc. The news attached to that, though, is simply that the same day will see brand-new hi-def Blu-ray and HD DVD releases of Superman: Doomsday as well! Yes, our retail informants tell us that the studio has decided to add in an additional pair of releases, one for each of the hi-def formats. They tell us that these will each be single-disc releases, probably with idential content (but simply in hi-def, up to 1080P is expected!), and that pricing has not been set on them just yet.

Warner hasn't officially announced these so far, but is expected to withing the next couple of weeks. We should have cover art around the same time, so stay tuned and we'll follow up as we get that.

It's up to you. From what I've heard they've been doing a last in, first out sort of thing. So if you reorder, theoretically, they should get on the ball about mailing you your movies.

If they are actually shipping now, you can't really go wrong at those prices. Just make sure that they don't charge you/ship your cancelled order anyways. I've had them do that to me with a piece of one of my orders and hopefully they won't do it with the one I canceled last week.

This is the "low end" HD DVD player, but it's still going to be a better piece of hardware than the 360 add-on. The one caveat is the 360 can give you 1080p if you're using VGA or HDMI, but if you don't have a 1080p TV it's irrelevant. That said, you can't get TrueHD audio from the 360 add-on (which also only matters if you have a receiver capable of it), so the features are somewhat of a wash. I would DEFINITELY recommend upgrading here, though. I'm strongly considering it.

Come on, let's be honest here, the entire chain has probably sold 5 high def discs in total to this point.

You know, I gotta be honest with you, now that I own both formats like you do I really can't understand why you seem to favor one over the other so much?

Someone should probably check each week at Wal-Mart's sale items. There was an article on CNNMoney today that stated basically Wal-Mart is going to have massive sales on 5 "high-demand" items each Friday until Christmas instead of all in one day so:

1. Other stores don't steal their ideas after the ads are leaked.
2. They don't have to worry about ads leaking early if they are changing the deals for every Friday.
3. They think they'll get more money and customers this way than having 1 giant sale.

The 360 player is flawed anyways. Unless i'm remembering wrong, USB 2.0 maxes at 12Mb/s, while video/audio on some discs can exceed 20Mb/s.

I'm gonna go for a A2 tomorrow. It'll probably end up being like Black Friday, but maybe this wont be too well advertised in Tampa.

You roll your eyes like you're surprised by that. Hell, I first heard in-store Christmas muzak 2-3 weeks ago. It's like this every year.

You could have rented it on your XBOX360 its on the Video Marketplace and in HD

Now, we all know where I stand on things...but is paying $6 (or whatever it costs) to watch a single movie one time a worthwhile substitute for getting a physical DVD, with all usage rights built-in, for maybe twice that amount? HD is nice, but that digital rental noise is an awful substitute for actually owning something, no?

The A2 only 1080i, so technically the 360 can give you 1080p.

The A2 CAN give you the better audio, but you have to have a receiver capable of TrueHD or DD+ (which I do not, so I do not care at this point).

Still a GREAT deal.

Watched Return to House on Haunted Hill last night for a halloween party movie.

For a party movie, it is pretty fun, because you have the choices you can make. We let each couple take turns on each choice. The movie itself is just direct to video horror, love it or hate it.

I am very confused about one thing though, I kept seeing little bright spots in the picture, almost like dust on film. But the review on Highdefdigest says it's nearly flawless.... weird.

According to this "source" Warner's stance on High Def will be decided with Walmart's sales:
A Warner source said the studio is watching what happens now that Wal-Mart and other big retailers are selling entry-level Toshiba HD DVD players for less than $200, about half what the cheapest Blu-ray player costs. If there is a significant spike in HD DVD software sales, the studio may cast its lot with that format, whereas if there is no real impact, Warner may go Blu-ray only.
