You don't have to buy the player online to get 2 free hd-dvds?
Jedi1979
11-01-2007, 08:54 PM
Did you return/rebuy? Was it automatic or did you need to show them a printout?
when i went, i had the printout and told them it wouldnt let me do it online, luckily they had just did the same thing for some guy before me so they said they can do it but i had to buy it in store and then cancel my other order. so i went and picked out 2 movies, came back and they rung it up like usual and that was that
so if you have a hd-dvd player on hold then you should have no trouble, but to be safe bring the printout to cut out any confusion

I am now format neutral. :D
Bought an HD-A2 for me, and one for my dad for Christmas--he's getting this plus Planet Earth so he can put that HDTV to good use =].
Wal-Mart was a freaking ghost town. Huge stack of HD-A2s and Acer laptops just sitting there. Although a guy showed up and said the first Wal-Mart he went to was sold out.
Sometimes living in a shitty, podunk town pays off.

I went to the closest Wal-Mart last night and they weren't even carrying them in the first place that I saw. Oh well. I may check another one later today just in case.

GUIDE: HD DVD Standalone Firmware Upgrade; New Toshiba HD-A2 owners: read this first!
Being a new Toshiba HD DVD Player owner, the first thing you should do is upgrade your firmware to the latest version to ensure best performance & compatibility. The below directions work for all Toshiba HD DVD Players in production, including the Toshiba HD-A2/A3.
There are three methods to upgrading your firmware, and they will be discussed below:
METHOD 1: Permanent Internet Connection (BEST METHOD)
******
HARDWARE NEEDED:
Existing router, wired or wireless depending on your intentions
Ethernet cable running from router to player (wired)
Wireless Ethernet Bridge/Game Adapter (wireless)
Ethernet Switch (wireless, optional)
HD DVD's have internet features, so it only makes sense that you'd want to give your Toshiba HD DVD player permanent internet access. Therefore, this method is not only great to get the latest firmware but also to allow you to unleash the full potential of your Toshiba HD DVD player.
So, hook up that Ethernet port to your router with an ethernet cable. Or, if you want to go wireless, buy one of the many "Wireless Ethernet Bridge" or "Wireless Ethernet Game Adapters" that allow you to use any ethernet-capable device wirelessly. The Linksys WET54G is a common example of one of these. If you have another device with ethernet you want to hook up (i.e. XBOX 360), simply buy a 5-port Ethernet Switch and that will allow you to hook multiple devices up to the bridge. You may need to unplug your modem/router after connecting everything to reset things so that devices recognize each other.
SO LET'S UPGRADE THIS BAD BOY!
Once your Toshiba HD DVD Player is hooked up to the router or bridge, go into the player's setup menu. Then go to the Ethernet submenu. Turn on DHCP. Turn on DNS. Now, simply hit confirm. Check the numbers that it spits out - if it looks like a proper IP address, you're set. If it looks wrong or null, try turning off auto-dns and setting the DNS server to the local IP address of your primary router (i.e. 192.168.1.1 or whatever) and hitting confirm again. By now, you should be set. Still doesn't work? If neither of the above options work, you can try this as a last-ditch effort (not as good as the first two solutions because external DNS IP can change over time). Try temporarily hooking up to the internet with an ethernet cable connected directly to your cable modem via METHOD 2 below, and using the auto DNS method, then hit CONFIRM; writer down the DNS numbers that show up in the boxes with the temporary connection. Then, reconnect your permanent setup and manually set the DNS to the numbers you wrote down with the temporary connection. You may need to restart the player in all of these cases. One of the above methods should get your Toshiba HD DVD Player online.
IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE THERE IS NO DISC IN THE DRIVE!!!!!! (If you leave a movie disc in the drive during internet firmware upgrade, it can cause major problems) Next step, is to go to the General/Maintenance section of the player and choose "Update". You will have to accept a EULA. The update process takes about 30 minutes. Do not unplug the player during this process. Once it has finished, the player will shutdown. Restart the player, go back to the setup menu, go to General/Maintenance, and select "Intialize". This will reset all settings and is a good idea just to tidy things up. You are done! Now go tweak your settings for optimal A/V quality!
METHOD 2: Temporary internet connection
*******
HARDWARE NEEDED:
Long ethernet cable (wired)
Assuming you dont want to buy a bridge or permanently hook up your player to the next, this is another option. Simply unplug your cable modem from your router (if you have one), then run a long ethernet cable directly from your cable modem to your player. After that, unplug the power of the cable modem and plug it back in (so that it forgets your router and starts fresh with the Toshiba HD DVD player). Then, turn on your player and go to the setup menu. Proceed to "SO LET'S UPGRADE THIS BAD BOY!" section in Method 1 to complete the upgrade. Detach long cable once firmware upgrade process is complete, keep it somewhere you'll remember for the next time! Hook the router (if you have one) back up, of course
METHOD 3: Burned CD-R ISO disc from computer
*******
HARDWARE NEEDED:
Computer with CD-R drive
Blank CD
So you totally want to avoid the internet, eh. Okay. Here is how to do it with a computer CD-R. First, read these directions:
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/notices/hddvd2firmware.asp
Next, download the file from here, and select the proper Toshiba HD DVD model you own from the dropdown (the most popular models are the HD-A2/HD-D2 and HD-A3, but be sure to check the front of your player for the exact model # so you get the right firmware):
http://tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/notices/hddvd-downloadingfirmware.asp
Unzip the ISO file to a place you will remember.
Then, download ISO RECORDER and run/install it:
http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/download/ISORecorderV2RC1.msi
Now, put a blank CD-R in the drive. Browse to the unzipped Toshiba ISO file, right click it, and hit Copy Image to CD. Set speed to 2x. Hit next, and you are done.
Now simply insert the CD-R into your Toshiba HD DVD Player and let the upgrade process complete. Remove the disc when it is finished. For good luck, go to the General/Maintenance section and Initialize the player after firmware update to reset all settings. You're done! Go tweak the A/V settings for optimal picture now!

I'll put that post by Ruined in the OP for a little while in case anyone managed to find a player this morning. Thanks!
For what it's worth, I checked 3 Wal-Marts around noon and naturally they were sold out of players everywhere. Gotta believe this was a pretty good day for HD DVD.
Oh, and I think it was already mentioned a few pages back, but if not - Face/Off is at Wal-Mart for $19.99 if you haven't picked it up yet.

I work at Wal-Mart and the HD Players went to sold out in less then five minutes, as we got in very few.
Needless to say thanks to the Wal-Mart deal I don't see HD trailing blue ray very much, especially if they have another sale like this in the future. People were snagging HD-DVDs like crazy.

To those updating the firmware on the Toshiba HD-A2, make sure you reboot after you change network settings. I was getting "can not find server" after changing my network info, and it didn't work until after I rebooted the player. Also, it takes a fairly long time to download and update the firmware, so don't freak out. =]

The two have been locked in their own format war, fighting to be the consumer's choice after the current favourite, DVD. HD DVD is backed by Toshiba and Microsoft, Blu-ray by Sony and Panasonic.
In June, major video rental store Blockbuster said it would be opting for Blu-ray in stores, and many would not be selling the HD DVD format at all. The company cited the fact that the PlayStation 3 uses Blu-ray as one of the reasons for its decision. In August, it was reported that Blu-ray was outselling HD DVD by 2-to-1.
However, also in August, major motion picture company Paramount Pictures decided to back HD DVD, and ceased production of most of its Blu-ray movies.
Howard Stringer, Sony's CEO, told the AP news agency that he believes the two formats are now at a stalemate, "It's been a difficult fight. We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides." However, Stringer said that he believed it was mainly a matter of prestige, and that it would ultimately not matter which format won out in the end.
He also said that he wished he could travel back in time to before he was made CEO of the company, when he believes there was a chance to unite the camps into one format.

Fair enough.
It just baffles me that some people really bought into Sony's PR shit. I mean, if you believed it in 2006 for whatever reason, fine. If you believed it after the weak showing for HD DVD at CES in January, I disagree but I can see where someone would be coming from.
However, anyone who believed HD DVD was going to be dead by now at any point after the "drought" was over in March is a clueless, braindead fool. There are no shortage of Blu-Ray devotees that fall into that category, I suppose.

Link - I'm glad it was moved back here but I think the time is getting pretty close to moving it away from the "nest." I have actually been working on turning this into a catch-all thread including info on players, it's just slow going because I've been a little busier than usual.
We haven't had much of a problem with Blu-Ray owners trying to take it over or whatever, and as long as people who are looking to just stir it up for no reason are swept away I don't think that'll change. It's unavoidable to have at least some Blu-Ray talk in an HD DVD thread (and vice-versa) but as long as people wanting to be admant in their support for "the other side" are shuffled off to the Format War Thread, I predict peace in the valley of 1080p.

That is changing though - heck, even some of the "regulars" of this thread have moved on to standalones. The 360 AO was great because it was a cheap way to get into HD. Now it isn't necessarily the best deal out there anymore, and more people are buying standalone players.

At AVS, someone went through and made a projected "big names list" for 2008 for both formats. Looking at the Dreamworks & Paramount stuff for '08, it makes the exclusivity deal seem even better for HD DVD:
Bee Movie, Beowulf, Sweeney Todd 1-18-08/Cloverfield, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (which may be dual format), Tropic Thunder, and Iron Man.
And that's not everything, I removed a few I didn't care about. Throw in a few AAA catalog titles and it'll be a REALLY strong year for Paramount's stuff.

I just checked out DreamworksAnimation.com to see what kind of stuff to look forward to hitting HD DVD and they have some pretty good stuff:
Bee Movie
Kung Fu Panda

Monster vs. Aliens (2009) - 50's Monster movie in a modern day action/comedy

I have one of those rotating DVD towers. The HD-DVDs are taking up 2 shelves on the front side and the tower has 5 DVD shelves on each side. I paid $100-150 for it a few years ago at Best Buy.

So far the a2 is a tad faster with the initial bootup and loading movies.
A2 Initial Bootup- 30 Secs
A3 Initial Bootup- 36 Secs
Hopefully some more updates can tighten up the a3
Also my a3 remote happens to work with the a2 as well.. interesting

None of that is really surprising. From what I understand, the A3 was basically an attempt at getting the A2 cheaper to manufacture and thus eventually cheaper to sell.

The only titile im having a somewhat issue with is Silent Hill. It still sends the audio as dts. I noticed this is a dts-hd movie so perhaps it cant decode to dd...

Did you guys get a survey from Warner Bros via email?
This is the title:
"Participate in an interesting research study for Warnerbrosvideo.com"
It basically asks if you know of HD DVD and Blu-Ray and which one(s) do you own and shop movies for. Also has a lot of questions for TV DVD shows and Warnerbros online purchases of TV DVD shows. When I finished I got a little message that said thank you and some other stuff but the window closed automatically before I could read it.
Makes me wonder if they are partly using the survey to see if they should stay neutral or choose a side.

I saw it, I just figured the red case was damaged in shipping or something and you switched it for DVD case. I think I'm starting to regret my purchase, the menu alone sucks, its the worst HD DVD menu ever, actually probably worst than any DVD ever. At certain scenes it looks like an upconverted version of the DVD, though I don't have the DVD to compare it with. I think I'm going to put this one up on eBay or my trade list if I ever get around to adding the stuff I want.

1. (Limit five per customer. Quantities are limited; order now before we run out!)
2. Select three HD DVDs from the list below and make your purchase--the promotional discount will be applied at checkout. You will see a credit in your Shopping Cart.
3. Get 300 and The Bourne Identity packaged with your player.
4. Get five more discs for free: Download the mail-in rebate form (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html/ref=amb_link_5900732_2?location=http://images.amazon.com/media/i3d/01/5free_oct07feb08_form_2.pdf&token=3E2797B7430753B689D75DA0BCBA7FFA0A67A770&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0NANX78NEMGV9C344MVW&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=331132101&pf_rd_i=1000167901) and print it out. When you receive your player, fill out the form with your choice of movies--you'll need the UPC code located on the player's package--and send it in to the address indicated on the form by March 31, 2008.
5. Set up your new player and marvel at the stunning picture, sound, and bonus features available with high-definition entertainment. Happy viewing!

Highest recommendations for Planet Earth (if you're interested in that sort of thing), Batman Begins, and Fearless. As far as "show off discs" that are questionable in content quality but look and sound great....Transfomers and the Matrix Trilogy are easy recommends.
Fearless is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated HD DVDs out there - excellent picture quality and an excellent film.

Some of my favorite HD-DVDs are Galapagos (think Planet Earth but focused solely on the Galapagos islands), Hot Fuzz/Shaun Of The Dead (great comedies), Seabiscuit (not only good looking but good story) and The Fountain (weird as shit).
One of the things I suggest doing is grabbing either a Blockbuster or Netflix account. Even though I buy alot of movies, it's really nice to be able to check them out first.

Anybody getting/got Star Trek Season 1? Tempted with DD sale, but soooo expensive...
Buy it in store...Apparently the set is very fragile is is breaking like nuts. My local BB had the set out and I picked it up and instantly thought it was a child's rattle.

The extras apparently look better then movie! They were encoded differently. I plan on renting this one eventually.
Hm, ST S1 in store? Nah, I guess I'll pass.
Shrek 3 on the other hand...

They look different, but I don't know about better. Interestingly Shrek 3 is first to be encoded with a new version of VC-1 which some people are saying is a new watermark for reference. But the extras use the AVC codec (which is often accused of sharpening - but some people like it)

Man. Amazon has the A3 for $160 w/ 10 free movies. I dont want to spend the money, but it says it wont be in stock for 4-5 weeks, so i can at least use that an excuse.
I'm in for one, i'll wait a week til its supposed to ship then ill sell off the 360 player.

it's weird cause the regular dvd side wouldn't even play in the player even after i cleared the memory for the movie
popped it into my 360 add on and the movie finished fine in HD
good thing i held onto it i guess
the features were pretty disappointing, but at least they were in HD which is nice.
hopefully universal will continue that

I got the error code around the beginning of the trial as well with my A3. Stopped it with no issues though, tried it again and it froze. Tried my HD DVD player and it worked flawlessly.
Another issue I had with the disc is that when I stopped it, and resumed play, it would start from the very beginning.
Pretty good film though, enjoyed it had a ton of laughs and Jessica Biel

I've been wanting a feature like this for years, technical limits of DVD be damned.
I never actually thought it would happen.
highdefdigest.com:
Promising to bring high-def interconnectivity to a new level, Warner will introduce a first-ever group screening function with its upcoming HD DVD release of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.'
Dubbed "Live Community Screening," the new feature will allow multiple owners of the 'Order of the Phoenix' HD DVD to simultaneously watch the film via their own individual web-connected players. Playback is controlled by a single "host" user, who initiates the invitation-only viewing, and can control the film by pausing and playing the feature on everyone else's machines. Even more cutting edge, Warner says participants will also be able to text between their remote devices, creating a virtual "live chat" environment while they watch.
Introducing this new feature with little fanfare (it wasn't even mentioned in the disc's press announcement), Warner revealed the complete details of 'Harry Potter's exclusive HD DVD content via this just-launched 'Harry Potter' product page at the newly redesigned thelookandsoundofperfect.com, the official consumer website of the HD DVD Promotions Group.
Set for release on December 11, other content exclusive to the HD DVD of 'Order of the Phoenix' includes a "Behind the Screen: Focus Points" picture-in-picture video commentary, additional downloadable material including screensavers and ringtones, plus a custom bookmarking function.
Although Warner is also debuting a Blu-ray version of 'Order of the Phoenix' day-and-date with the HD DVD, that disc will not include any web-enabled content.

In June this year, Warner Home Video has mentioned that there are plans to release the sequel to Appleseed - Appleseed: Ex Machina - on HD DVD.
Warner has now finally confirmed that anime film Appleseed: Ex Machina will be available to own in high-definition on HD DVD/DVD Combo disc, from March 11, 2008, for $35.99 SRP each. Stay tuned for further details...
Based on various sources, it seems Warner is expected to announce the North American HD DVD release of Clubland and L.A. Confidential pretty soon.
Fucking awesome, bring it on Warner.

I'm surprised that Assault On Precinct 13 isn't more popular. It isn't the greatest movie but it is a little under-par with the Dawn Of The Dead remake.
Only thing that sucks about it is that the case has a silver side. I fucking can't stand those. They are way too shiny and it's hard to read what's on the side.
