Is the picture quality better than HD cable?
yes, noticeably so. its reference qualtiy

Barring a godawful transfer, HD disc is going to always be better than HD cable. There's generally a lot of compression going on when you're watching something on HD cable.

c'mon, its partly true. u know it. i have a friend w/ a 50" plasma he has mounted on a stand about 8 feet opposite his bay window. and the wall is on the 2nd story of a pretty busy street. if he keeps his shades open babes will stop and point.
but it might have more to do w/ the female brain being attracted to shiny bright things than anything, cause it only happens at night

Nah they aren't impressed usually by HD. The HD is for me, if I have to sit through it. The movie itself is for chicks.

So which studios use that kind of case design? The case like Breach where if you're looking at the spine, it's much more squared off at the tops and bottoms like the BR cases, unlike the Warner cases? It seems like Universal is the only one using it and they have that damn flap on the side which is so irritating.

Awww fuck, got my first, fucked up combo disc. Smokin' Aces, thing locks up right in the middle.
My saga of Smokin' Aces:
ordered from Amazon on "buy HD-DVDs from Amazon day" which was 2 weeks ago as of tomorrow. Disc ends up being sent to the wrong address for some unknown reason and is then returned to Amazon. I got an email about it yesterday morning and that my money will be refunded. Then last night I was at Best Buy and saw it was only $29.99 so I just bought it on the spot. I got home, started watching the movie, and about 1/2 way through it locked up. Returned it today and got another one. The second one wouldn't even load at all. I returned the second one and got a third one. Now, *knock on wood* I'm watching the third copy and despite taking a little while to load the main menu after the Universal opening logo, I haven't had a problem yet.
I've had no problem playing any other HD-DVD (well except for a super scratched up one from blockbuster.com) until this and it really has me wary about buying Universal combo discs online due to having to return this one so many times. They need to either get their shit together with these things or drop the combo format altogether (which I'd prefer anyway...) because this is ridiculous.

What's irritating is prying open a dvd case to have the disc go flying because it wasn't secured well enough.

It has nothing to do with the Combo discs. This, along with Good Shepard and Children of Men are having issues. Universal is fixing them via new discs or a firmware update shortly.

Finally started Planet Earth...don't know if I agree with 5 star PQ when you base it against King Kong or Hulk or Batman Begins, but considering it's a documentary and they can't always have the "nice" equipment a regular film would have, it's definitely the best it can be. Entertaining as hell too, I've only watched the first two episodes so far but I'm hooked.
Anyone know what Amazon's behavior for shipping early is on multiple-item orders? A lot of times when I order two or three things and one is a pre-order, they'll ship part of it early at no charge. I've currently got the NIN film/concert, Mallrats, Big Lewbowski, and Eternal Sunshine all ordered/preordered. With Eternal Sunshine hitting stores this week I figured they would have shipped what was there, but nothing yet. It's not a big deal, but I want to know if I'm really going to have to wait until the first week in July to get it.

Is there any truth to the HD combo discs having problems during pressing? I heard that it was from the dual press (press one side then the other) that is causing all the problems. Some how the discs get warped on second stamping. Just curious if anybody else has seen this, especially with all the crazy rumors and lies going around about both formats.

Oh come on, the acting was horrible and the plot was useless. Specially hated the end, when the guy returns the money and the Tokyo mobster is pissed and he says "what you think just because you brought it back you can go home safely?", and then the other guy goes, "lets settle it by racing"...that was so fucking cheesy. Also the part where the redneck almost gets shot and the dad saves him and the other guy takes off, he tells his son he's on the next flight home, and he says "no I have to do this..." and the dad looks at him and goes "ok"...that was just plain horrible writting. The only good part of the film was the driving chase seen where that one dude dies in his car.

Out of all the Combo's made, only these 3 have issues. So its not a pressing issue with those 70+ Combo's already on shelves.

That's not even remotely close to how combos are made. Just like all double-sided discs, the sides are pressed individually and then glued together. Here's what it looks like when the glue doesn't hold:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=80810
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=80811
The prevailing theory is that Universal has screwed something up with the process recently, and some outgassing from the glue inside the keepcase causes a film to form on the surface of the disc which interferes with the laser reading the small pits of the HD side (as the SD side is apparently unaffected). Boiling the disc for a few seconds or washing it with dish soap fixes the problem in most cases.

I could have sworn that there was an option...this is what I dug up from the XBOX support side:
Five-disc resume (bookmarking): Xbox 360 maintains a single bookmark for each of up to five DVD movies. When a movie is stopped or if the console is powered down during playback, the console will remember, or bookmark, your location in the movie. The next time you load this movie, playback will commence from the bookmarked point. Bookmarks work only if the console is connected to either an Xbox 360 Hard Drive (http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hardware/x/xbox360harddrive/default.htm) or an Xbox 360 Memory Unit (http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hardware/x/xbox360memoryunit64mb/default.htm).

I thought the B or Y button added a bookmark for the HD-DVD drive...although, maybe the movie has to support it.
The auto resume seems to work also.

It will add a bookmark on HD DVDs that support it (ie, Planet Earth doesn't support it). Most titles seem to though.
DVDs are just resumed from where you last played them, no bookmarking necessary.
thrustbucket

And for those who didn't know, there is a more advanced bookmarking system on Smokin Aces.
You can actually save entire clips as book marks, and then go back and watch them all together.

I tried both pressing "Stop" on the media remote then shutting down using the "On/Off" on the same remote. Then I tried pressing stop through the user GUI when using the controller and then shutting down by holding down the Guide button and selecting "Shut Down Console". Both times, it didn't auto-resume. Goes right back to the very start of the disc.

Serenity didn't have a "My Scenes" feature anyway so maybe that has something to do with not being able to resume. I tried it as well with Fearless, trying to add a chapter and seeing if it'd restart, but it froze up for a bit. I'll attribute that to it being a combo disc. I'll check my other discs though out of curiousity. I find it odd that it won't auto-resume on every disc since DVDs work just fine.

On the flipside, bookmarking/my scenes only works on HD-DVDs, not DVDs.

The site says you can:
Spanish subtitles (can be removed - see below)
The following must be done in order to remove the Spanish subtitles for English audio playback (only applies to the movie itself):
1. Begin the movie
2. Within a few seconds of playback pause the movie
3. Push the "Chapter Back" button in order to "move" the movie back to the very beginning (0:00)
4. Use the Menu Button to Select "Idiomas"
5. Select "Ingles" and then "Sin Subtitulos"
6. Hit the Menu Button and then push Play

I'm honestly wondering if that April 15th blitz kind of caught them off-guard. I ordered stuff that was shown as in stock, but it has not shipped yet either. This may be at least partially due to the fact that I put in a few pre-relases alongside it, though. Did you order anything else with it?
For what it's worth, they're trying to get another "buy HD DVDs" day for 5/28 going on AVS. I don't know how well it's going, they seem to have some support, but having it only a little over a month from the first one seems like its pushing it. Once every three months would be more than enough.

Thanks LP. I saw that menu trick last night when I almost ordered from Xploited Cinema.
It probably will work on all players, but I sort of want to make sure 360 add-on owners can do it before I drop $40

I did order some other things, but it was vhs tapes from the marketplace they have...I have a co worker that does a lot of fixing up thing on stuff i break...so he does the work for free, and I have to buy him a vhs tape on occassion...they have shipped but I haven't gotten them...I did look at my credit card balance online, and it looks like the planet earth dvd charge is in the temp auth file...so I would imagine they should ship b4 the end of the week:bouncy:

Going back a page or two, here's something from Amir regarding lack of auto-resume on HD DVD, from the highdefdigest forums:
Resume is a lot more complicated to do in these new formats. The menu system that you see is a full (HDi) application which is running. If you turn off the machine, there is no way to know what the app was doing. You have to do the equiv. of suspending your laptop which is too complicated to implement in an HD DVD player. The application could easily to do it, as it does with bookmarks and some titles may attempt this soon. We are also working on another solution but it requires firmware upgrade and some title changes to work.

I watch on a little 19" widescreen monitor and I don't regret my jump into the HD arena.
The 2:31 ratio movies are a little hard to really see the difference but 1:78/1:85 ratio movies really shine since they take up the entire screen.

Also, if you don't mind a used player, go to the gamestop website and search for the hd-dvd player. On the search results, look at the bottom and make sure it says "show backordered items" or whatever. You can then click on the "used" HD-player, then do a search for stores in your area that have it used. Its $150 used, plus 10% off if you have the edge card (or if you say you forgot your edge card at home, store employees are usually nice enough to let you use the Store's edge card), plus another 10% if you have the Game Informer coupon.
The only downside is that it doesn't include the remote or King Kong. The remote is $15 used.

24" Dell....I do remember someone else talk about buying that Acer though. SHOW YOURSELF, WHOEVER YOU ARE.
As far as the player itself, I'd recommend just holding out for a deal on a new one, rather than getting a used drive. Better to wait, get $50 off (or whatever) and get a free movie and remote.
chair_home
05-03-2007, 11:11 AM
Yeah, it did kind of suck not having a remote and movie right off the bat, but the coupons and edge card brought it down to about $120 before tax, and I traded in some stuff, so it worked out. If you add a used HD-DVD movie (typically under $20) and a used remote (the 10% card + 10% coupon work for both of those, too), you get the whole "package" of the new drive for $150. Even less than that if you do it this week since its "Buy 2, get 1 free" on used accessories, dvds and games... you would be able to get this package for $15 less since the remote is free.

HD players are more prone to not playing scratched HD discs versus DVDs right?
I just got my order for Planet Earth and disc 2 has horrible scratches on the outermost part of the disc from the holder it was placed on (you'll see a small ridge if you have the packaging). So should I expect skipping/errors towards the last half of the disc then? I wanna test it out and fast-forward to possible problem areas before I ask for an exchange from Amazon. Outer-most part of the disc = end of videos?

Heads-up (and I should have mentioned this earlier) - this is not the "Blue Planet" that was done by the same people that did Planet Earth, this Blue Planet is an older IMAX film. However, from what I recall people seemed to really like it, so it probably doesn't matter and still should be a worthy purchase for those who liked PE.

Finally got a chance to watch Alpha Dog and simply on HD it's not that impressive. A few scenes did look pretty nice, but the night scene close to the end was pretty bad and others were rather grainy and saturated(both intended) with color that a viewing on standard DVD would be just fine. The movie itself could go either way for any viewer and how they relate to the material in the story. I found the kids really stupid and the movie was more of a comedy to me. I think the comedic lines delivered by the actors were intended but I'm not sure. All in all it was an ok movie but I don't recommend a purchase, a rental would suffice.

Sorry guys, was kinda sick this weekend but got to watch Underworld Evolution on Friday.
The main point that everyone keeps talking about (the Spanish subtitles), yes you can turn it off! Just follow the instructions that's been posted and you should have no problems with it.
As for the movie itself, it looks really good in HD. Probably the one scene that everyone talks about when they discuss about UW E in HD is the scene where it shows a close up of Marcus' eye, I wasnt that impressed. But for the most part, everything looks great, especially when they're in the snow. PQ, I would give a 8/10
Sound, I dont have any fancy speakers or anything, just the default on my HDTV. So I cant really give an accurate review about that but I did pick up on some stuff that I never noticed before when watching the film (like at the beginning of the film with the words scrolling across the screen, you can hear lines from the first film).
Bonus features, I think they got everything from the SD on here. Only thing that should be noted is that a couple of the extras are dubbed over in Spanish. The rest are in English.
Overall, I love the Underworld series (if you hadnt noticed by my pic and sig) so I would recommend this.
Got it at Xploited Cinema for $40 shipped (fastest delivery option, around $36 if you want the slowest). Bought it on Tuesday night and got it on Friday. Last time I checked, they were out of stock but I would get it from them if they did restock. Great service.

Tokyo Drift sucked ass! One of the worst movies ever! I loved F&F 1 & 2 but TD was horrendous.
That's funny because i thought the first one was trash. The second one minutely better. The third one a blast.

I had to dispute through PayPal to get my money back for the cancellation of the Matrix Trilogy. I did get it right after my dispute but it took about a month for me to actually decide to push that far. Never shopping from them again, unless there's some ridiculous sale...and I'll have to think hard about it then.

I can't bad mouth MovieMinded.
After my Planet Earth went MIA, MovieMinded overnighted me a copy to make things right.
Pretty admirable since the overnight shipping alone was 22 dollars and that's not including him eating the cost of the lost movie.
I've placed a big order with HDDVDWorld a little while back and even though the experience has been hit-and-miss, after my RAGE subsided I realized that MovieMinded has been nothing but helpful.
Not only did he answer all of my questions I have been PMing him (which is where all of this support shit should go if you really want to talk to him) but he has been trying his damnest not only to keep me a customer but a happy customer.
Posting about a bad experience is fine but filling the guy's thread with pages of !-( is a little much.
-----------
My first HD-DVD was a little late (Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas; shipped 26th; recieved the 2nd)
My second HD-DVD (A Scanner Darkly) was actually a day early.
My third HD-DVD (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) showed up two days after it's release date.
My fourth HD-DVD (Planet Earth) is MIA in the mail and after 10 days, he offered to overnight me a replacement or refund my money. I just decided to go with the overnight replacement.
In my anger, around the 5 day late mark for Planet Earth, I just canceled the rest of my order. He offered to upgrade the rest of it to Express Mail but at this point I just wanted out.
Overall HDDVDWorld has been hit-and-miss, kind of slow on the draw shipping wise but I always got my movies in the end.
And at these prices, that's the thing that really matters most.

Here's a scary rumor that I hope is just a rumor:
Rumour: Largest HD-DVD studio, Universal, going neutral
Heise Online, a German IT website, is reporting that during a press conference, representatives from Pioneer announced that Universal will break their exclusivity agreement with HD DVD (http://n4g.com/industrynews/NewsCom-38720.aspx#). This would allow Universal, the only large studio exclusively supporting HD DVD, to freely distribute their movies on Blu-ray. It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal.
It has long been speculated that Universal (http://n4g.com/industrynews/NewsCom-38720.aspx#) was receiving monetary compensation for being an exclusive HD DVD studio. This announcement would signal that they have decided to forgo the compensation in order to release titles on Blu-ray. Most would agree that this move would effectively end the war, and no matter what side you support, a single HD format is the best long term solution.
http://n4g.com/industrynews/NewsCom-38720.aspx#C201030
And on other happy news, the HD DVD XBOX360 update should show up between now and the 22nd of this month. Posters stated that Amirm confirmed this, though I can't find the post.
Also, found alternate cover art for Underworld Evolution...Its in English!

Any extras? No issues. At the very beginning a screen popped up asking me to select a language. I chose English and from there, I didn't have to turn off subtitles or anything like that (very happy to see that). This is my first imported movie, too, so I don't know if that kind of thing is what usually happens or not. There are a few extras, but I didn't get a chance to check them out. Alright, Xploited Cinema/HD-DVD trip report time.
I ordered my movies (USPS Media Mail) on the 6th, they shipped on the 7th and I receieved them on the 11th.
Shipped in a normal envelope.

My movies were wrapped in a Priority box for protection :)
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7820/78159502db0.jpg
The front of my movies. Total Recall's packaging is completely in French while La Haine is completely in English.

The back of the cases. Again Total Recall in French while La Haine is in English.

I popped Total Recall into my 360 and was greeted with this menu to select the language. After that there was a little preview movie of the upcoming Studio Canal releases.

The menu of Total Recall. Just a simple menu setup with clips of the movie playing in the background.

Next I popped in La Haine. It automatically defaulted to English. Same type of menu as Total Recall.
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4227/61056725ty2.jpg
And that's it. I haven't had a chance to watch the movies yet but Total Recall looked great while La Haine looked pretty good for a 10+ year old black and white movie.
Great service from Xploited. Even though I used the cheapest shipping available, it only took 5 days for them to show up.

Some people have already somehow acquired the matrix collection. The base version (cheaper) apparently comes with a code for Live to download Animatrix. (not known if it's HD or not, but most likely not.)

The people that have seen it are talking about it here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=846189). I skimmed through, but it seems the general consensus is about half of the first movie is somewhat grainy (which the master is) and the rest is very very good. Probably tier 1.

Most of the reviews I read of that film on HD mentioned it had a soft transfer.
I picked up Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (HD) over the weekend. Great movie, nice transfer. It was rated mid Tier 3 on AVS, probably because of the murky-looking dark scenes and some overtly bright scenes. I still thought it was a nice upgrade from the SD release (which I also own) though.
The next couple weeks will be expensive for HD-DVD owners, lots of good stuff coming out. Hopefully the May 21st release of Le Pacte De Loups (French import) will finally stick.
Also I heard the HD-DVD update is coming tomorrow, any truth to that?

What's the "dynamic range" option for?
Probably to somehow adjust/toggle the decibels, I'm no audio expert by far, but I know it's sometimes adjustible because it can affect the noise and distortion dealing with compression/conversion (or something like that IIRC). Essentially, I think the wider the dynamic range the better and if it's too narrow for example things can sound quite flat. Could be wrong though as the dynamic range can actually refer to many things in separate fields.

While the Heroes date has been known for a few weeks now, we have pricing and additional info:
Heroes: Season 1 on HD DVD, this August 28 (day-and-date with DVD release). It will be a standard HD DVD release (tentatively 6/7 discs, subject to further confirmation) and will be priced at $79.98 SRP. The main feature will be presented in 1080p High Definition Widescreen 1.78:1 video with Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English) audio. English [SDH] & French subtitles are provided.
Someone on AVSforum mentioned that Entertainment Weekly reported that the HD-DVD (and the DVD, I think) will have a feature that will let you play individual character arcs in sequence. Sounds cool if its true.

Very nice.
Should be around 60ish on Amazon.
Which is just low enough IMO for a blind buy.

Now that the patch is out I can finally enjoy the NIN concert. No more clicking when TrueHD is turned on and the audio test finally works right.
Yes the HD DVE disc is a worthy purchase for the $15 or so that it costs. It is much easier to find the pattern you need and just works great.
It doesn't have all the video walkthroughs that the SD side does. So if you're new to this kind of disc calibration then it may be a little overwhelming at first. Just flip the disc over and watch over the videos and then calibrate in HD.

Even if it only sells 1 copy, that's still more than it'll be selling on BD (this year, anyway). Like The Matrix, Batman Begins, Troy, etc, 300 is "exclusive until further notice". Basically meaning WB is holding it until BD-J and BD-Video 1.1 is working.

It will outsell the BD version. The HD DVD version has exclusive IME and a game. In the past, with something like Departed, both BD and HD had the same features so most of the neutral people bought the cheaper BD. While on the other hand, Happy Feet, which had TrueHD vs just Dobly Digital on the BD, and Happy Feet was higher on the Amazon charts.

Most people don't honestly care about special features when it costs them extra money and they are given a choice. If people followed that logic speical edition vresions would be nearly equal to the regular versions on new releases, in the end though they are lucky to be a solid fraction of the sales. I'll be buying it on HD though. Also, though I loathe using just Amazon sales numbers as comparisons, currently the BD version of Happy Feet outranks the HD version by just over a 100 spots...

Same price at CC too, and yeah the add-on no longer seems like such the deal it used to even if it was recently improved somewhat. I'm just glad I got in on a fully fledged player for only $40 more than the addon.
