I'm not aware of ANY HD DVD movies in a resolution other than 1080p. All 6 launch titles were, and every release I've seen since has been. Every single one of my ~70 movies (about a third of all that have been released) is 1080p as well. Can you list some titles?

I don't have 1080p but I could have sworn some of the earlier ones didn't...I guess I was wrong. Sorry for the misinformation there.

The poster was correct, all major titles released on HD DVD have been 1080p. This includes Chronos which was incorrectly listed as 1080i in the booklet but is actually 1080p24 on the disc.

I know the tier list is subjective on AVS, but I'm disappointed the 3 recent Universal titles (Frighteners, Dragonheart, Lost in Translation) were rated average. Both Frighteners and Dragonheart earned High-Mid Tier 3. Lost in Translation actually was put in the lowest tier (Tier 5).

Also I got my Complete Matrix HD-DVD set delivered today. I've only checked out Reloaded so far, but it obviously stomps my SD version in terms of PQ.

The Tier thread over at AVS is completely fucked. There is no way Lost In Translation is a Tier 5.

I dig the one over at High-Def Digest more.

We put Lost In Translation at the bottom of Tier 2.

That would be extremely shitty if it went through.

One of the reasons I bought into HD-DVD was because everything was region free.

Pans Labirinth to be first HD DVD to feature THX certification
European HD DVD release of 'Pan's Labyrinth' will carry THX-certification, making it the first-ever next-gen title to receive the high-end seal of approval. The THX certified process, famously invented in the '80s by George Lucas and his team at Lucasfilm to ensure quality control in theatrical presentations, eventually found its way into the home video industry, including various movie releases on Laserdisc, VHS and DVD.

Update:

We apologize for the difficulty you have experienced with your order.

Maybe Paramount is doing a same prices for both formats thing. The Blu-Ray is also 27.95.

Dawn Of The Dead perplexes me though. It has been announced a single side, no combo on the cover and $26.99 coming from a HD-DVD exclusive company.

My screenshots of Mulholland Drive aren't doing so good.

I can't get FRAPS to work and I can only print screen the image which sucks because I don't have a 1080p screen.

Someone just posted a lot of screen caps of the prestige on BD vs HD DVD. BD is AVC and HD DVD is VC-1. You mouse over each shot to see the HD DVD version.
http://www.mbmg.de/hd-discs/theprestige_bd-vs-hd/01.html

Keep in mind that this movie is considered one of the best looking BD's.

Paramount has charged $39.99 for single disc standard releases in the past, such as Babel. As I stated earlier in the thread, combo or not studios are looking to charge $35-$40 for new releases.

i saw harsh times at fye couple days ago and picked it up (guess they got it early and didn't care about street date)

it was MSRP too which sucked, but the picture quality wasn't that impressive. Maybe high tier 3 on AVS list. Audio was the same. No special features really (Deleted scenes, commentary, trailer, thats it). I liked th emovie tho, but I don't think it deserved HD treatment.

I can't tell the difference between upscanned DVD and this release

anyone see harsh times or breach?

I saw Breach when it was in theaters.

I really enjoyed it as a "cat and mouse" type movie. Then again I'm really biased as I like a lot of those movies as well as spy movies/shows. Came in thinking that a movie of this calibur based on a "real" event wouldn't be interesting. Glad to see that I was proven wrong and the movie is solid stuff.

Chris Cooper is fantastic as usual. I was really suprised with Ryan Phillipe since I'm not a fan of any of his work (minus Way of the Gun). His performance was good throughout the whole movie and I definitely liked Cooper and Phillipe as the mains.

Lots of great/tense moments throughout the movie. It's also nice to see that this movie, which hinges on a lot of dialogue, is as deeply interesting as it is.

Weinstein Company Announces ‘Nomad The Warrior: Unrated Director’s Cut’ for Release on HD-DVD July 24, 2007

June 12, 2007

Weinstein Company is proud to announce the release of ‘Nomad The Warrior: Unrated Director's Cut’ on HD-DVD on July 24, 2007.

‘Nomad The Warrior: Unrated Director's Cut’ will be presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and 1080p resolution. This release of the modern-day classic will also be presented in the new state of the art Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound format.

Come and experience the film, which critics agree is nothing more then average. Since enjoying a successful run at the box-office domestically ($79,123) join Oscar-winning director Milos Forman who executive produces this cinematic classic import from Kazakhstan.

In the 18th century, Mongolian invaders rule the country. The Kazakhs are divided by infighting, but Oraz (Jason Scott Lee, THE JUNGLE BOOK) searches for the messiah destined to unite and save his people. He finds Mansur, the baby boy of prophecy, and trains him to be a fighter. As Mansur (Kuno Becker, GOAL!) becomes a man, he reveals himself to be a mighty warrior, as does his best friend, Erali (Jay Hernandez, HOSTEL).

The men prepare to battle the Mongols, who are led by the strength of Sharish (Mark Dacascos, IRON CHEF). Though this war epic features an unusual subject in its focus on the history of Kazakhstan, it follows in the footsteps of Hollywood war films such as BRAVEHEART.

Unlike most recent battle-driven movies, NOMAD: THE WARRIOR doesn’t rely on computer-generated effects to create its vast armies. Instead, it focuses on the talents of real people, including Dacascos, who has displayed his martial-arts prowess in films like DOUBLE DRAGON and BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF. Each of the actors displays deft sword fighting skills--an essential in a film fueled by action. Italian composer Carlo Siliotto (THE PUNISHER) garnered a Golden Globe nomination for his powerful score.

‘Nomad The Warrior: Unrated Director's Cut’ will carry an MSRP of $29.95 and be available on HD-DVD on July 24, 2007.

Never heard of it, and I'm usually into really obscure films. But it has Mark Dacoscos in it, whom I love, so I might blind buy.

The government of Kazakstan spent $40 million on it. But it did get a 7% on rotten tomatoes. oh well. I hear it has some cool fighting and nice scenery.

So much for talks of Region Coding. Just got an email from TheLookAndSoundOfPerfect.com with the following:

The release of stellar titles such as Pan's Labyrinth is yet another example of why the top-selling high-def players as well as the top selling high-def titles in Europe, are available only in HD DVD. Contrary to what the other guys might say, HD DVD is earning a tremendous amount of support worldwide.

Just in case you're not going on a European vacation anytime soon, it's worth nothing that HD DVDs do not support region coding. What's that mean for you? The more than 100 European HD DVD releases will play on the HD DVD hardware you already own. See if you can do that with other high-definition formats. Thanks to the magic of online shopping, you can be enjoying a wider variety of titles than you thought! We expect more than 600 HD DVDs to be available worldwide by the end of this year.

There you go...Toshiba encourages the purchase of imported titles :D

Wow, that's a new one.

First I'd try shutting everything off and unplugging everything, and then hooking it back up following the directions you used to set it up initially.

I'm assuming you are hooked up to the internet and your player is updated with the newest firmware.

You may want to check the avsforum.com HD DVD software section. I haven't heard of that problem but there may be something on it there. You could always ask there too I suppose.

If all else fails, send/take it back and try again.

I am SO tempted to go for the HD-A20 while the rebate is on, but I'm going to wait I guess. Further (and better) discounts will be coming pretty heavily once we get into fall. The 360's player is fine in the meantime.

Something to keep in mind for people considering getting Army of Darkness once the non-combo reissue is out:

It appears that the SD side of the HD DVD is superior to every standalone SD release so far. The color on the SD side of the combo appears to be much more realistic than the too blue/cool look of the "previous champion" that was a Region 3 only release.

For my money, it's not worth paying the extra 5 bucks (or whatever) to have the best-looking SD version, but completists may want to pick it up before it starts to vanish. I'm waiting for the inevitable special edition regardless.

Face Off gets pushed back to Sept. 11 but is now a 2disc Special Edition:
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/images/post/2/2814/original.jpeg

Paramount has now bumped the release of both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions back until September 11.
While full specs have yet to be released, Paramount has sent along the box art for both next-gen editions, which indicates a two-disc special edition for each. So we can likely look forward to plenty of fresh bonus features to highlight the release.
Retail price remains $29.95 for both versions.

Sorry for the double post but this is worth it.

The Digital Bits just put up Universal's release list for the rest of the year. They haven't been wrong before so you can just about bet on this being correct.

Also today, our sources have given us a rundown of the latest expected street dates for the rest of Universal's planned catalog and new release HD-DVD titles through the end of 2007. Here's what to look for...

8/7 - Hot Fuzz

8/14 - Erin Brockovich, Meet the Fockers, Mercury Rising, What Dreams May Come

8/28 - Dawn of the Dead (2004), Heroes: The Complete First Season, The Hurricane, Notting Hill

9/18 - Battlestar Galactica: The Complete First Season, Elizabeth, For the Love of the Game, The Last Starfighter, Legend

9/25 - Cat People, Evening, The Getaway, Knocked Up, Patch Adams

10/9 - Strangers, Seed of Chucky

10/23 - Inside Man, Carlito's Way, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power, White Noise

10/30 - Talk to Me

11/6 - Evan Almighty, About a Boy, Weird Science

11/13 - Pride and Prejudice

11/20 - I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Tremors, Family Man

12/11 - The Bourne Ultimatum, Mr. Bean's Holiday, The River Wild, Timecop

12/18 - Eastern Promises

12/26 - The Kingdom, Balls of Fury, American Pie: Unrated, Mobsters, Undercover Brother

As always, this information should be considered unofficial until the titles and dates are announced by the studios. Stay tuned...

I'm amazed that Tremors is getting the HD treatment.

Fucking Sony with their low blows:

http://gamersreports.com/images/news/bluray.gif

PRESS RELEASE

Washington, D.C. (June 17, 2007) -- Video rental giant Blockbuster will only rent HD in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores next month when it expands its high-def service.

That's according to an exclusive report today from the Associated Press.

The retailer has tested both formats in approximately 250 stores for the last several months. But Blockbuster officials say 70 percent of the high-def rentals are Blu-ray.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, Blockbuster's senior vice president of merchandising, tells AP.

Blockbuster is expected to announce the decision to favor Blu-ray over HD DVD on Monday, AP reports. However, the retailer will continue to carry HD DVD titles in the original 250 test locations.

Smith said that Blu-ray titles are outpacing HD DVD rentals because there are movies available in the format. Four of the eight major film studios are backing Blu-ray exclusively with only one (Universal) supporting HD DVD exclusively.

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said, according to the AP.

Blockbuster's decision could be a serious blow to HD DVD in the high-def format war. But one HD DVD backer said Sunday that Blockbuster is acting on limited information.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the promotional group for HD DVD.

http://gamersreports.com/news/5877/blockbuster-to-support-blu-ray/

And on positive news...

Among the major titles that Video Business says are hit to next-gen by the end of the year are two blockbuster franchises from Warner. The studio is reported to be planning a roll-out of at least some (if not all five) of the 'Harry Potter' series, as well as all three 'Ocean's Eleven' flicks.
Look for the 'Potter' titles to be released on high-def by the end of 2007, timed to the home video bow of next month's theatrical premiere 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.'

Also on tap are 'Ocean's Eleven' and 'Ocean's Twelve,' which should arrive with the late fall video debut of the 'Ocean's Thirteen.' (The latest -- and supposedly -- last in Steven Soderbergh's star-studded Vegas caper series opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office last weekend.)
In addition, Warner Home Video plans to bow some of the first made-for-DVD titles on either high-def format. Due for release in early 2008 are the horror movies 'The Rest Stop' and 'Sublime,' which will come from the studio's Raw Feed label.

The MS response:

Would be happy to comment . Let’s start with pointing out the specifics that are in front of us:

1. All the tools we had to bring HD DVD to our customers yesterday, we have today and tomorrow. BB has and will continue to offer HD DVD to its customers in the 250 stores and online. Nothing has changed in this. Nothing. Note that the great pains they took in their press sub-heading to confirm their commitment to HD DVD:
http://blockbuster.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=727

“Company will continue to offer HD DVD titles online and in select number of stores“

They would not go out of their way to confirm their intention in such a clear way to support HD DVD if they did not believe in viability of HD DVD.

2. Yes, they are expanding their offering to other stores. One would think though, that the core stores that carry both formats, were picked because they were closer to where potential customers are (e.g. higher income, higher probability of owning HDTVs, larger metropolitan areas, etc.). As such, the fact that those stores continue to carry HD DVD is very substantial aspect of this story.

3. Please read BB’s own press release – they clearly state that they cannot and are not stating a “winner.” And that they are very open to changing their distribution strategy in the future. Given the fact that they already carry HD DVD in such a broad basis already, making adjustments to that plan comes easily.

4. Both formats right now are niche products. As such, expansion to large set of stores is not that significant in itself. The key to expanding the market is to make the players more affordable. I can have 1000 Ferrari showrooms, but that doesn’t mean people will go and buy them in droves . The key is to bring the cost of that Ferrari to the level of a Honda and then you have it available in all the stores. Until then, the cart is being put before the horse. But still, I applaud BB for wanting to make HD more mainstream. And as soon as they do, we will be ready with HD DVD .

Please note that I am not saying this is not a positive development for BDA. It is. They have had a long drought wrt to getting more companies on board while we have been making progress in reverse (e.g. Circuit City carrying HD DVDs). But as you can imagine, by now we are used to press releases from companies in support of their format. Yet, BD remains a niche product as does ours frankly. The cost of products is simply too high, and the value too limited to consumer in relation to it, leading to small sales (and rentals). As such, our focus remains as I stated: getting the cost down, and making it more affordable for people to own the sockets which will eventually drive rental business. We have that advantage on the replication, and better interactivity to differentiate our product from DVD, but the playback devices still have room to come down in price to gain wider adoption….

And stated, not too worried. They already carry HD DVD in 250 of their stores, and expansion Blu-Ray 'catalog' titles to another 1,000 is not a huge deal. They have 6,000 stores and only 1,500 are going Blu. Please remember this is Blockbuster/ Take a look at there past and you will see some laughable decisions. Sony and Blockbuster have been in bed for a while now, take a look at the new release shelfs for some hard proof.

Ummm, Blockbuster has the Exclusive deal with Weinstein also (look at all those horrible Exclusive at Blockbuster titles)....that is HD-DVD exclusive. So, they take what they can get.

However, at least more stores are getting next-gen titles...that is a good thing. I'm neutral, since I have PS3 and 360 HD-DVD.

A bit more from MS:

Q:
Hi Amir,
I've yet to walk into my local store and see an HD-DVD disc priced lower than it's BD counterpart.
If they are truely cheaper to produce, then this means the studios are taking the opportunity to rake in a higher profit.

While I cannot fault them for this, it seems like perhaps they should forego the extra profit to try to secure a larger footprint with the public (so that people walk into a store and see that HD-DVD is truely cheaper.)

If the average person walks in and see's the HD-DVD version of something is $5 more expensive, they won't be thinking "oh, maybe it's a combo disc", they'll just think "same movie, and the one in the blue case is cheaper".

Thoughts? Any word of this "cheaper" thing ever becoming a reality?

Thanks in advance,
Stuart

A:
If you want to take this thinking further, you have to wonder why the discs are not even more expensive than they are (in both formats) since studios don’t make money on hardly any titles in HD!

So what we have is not a proper economic system yet so we can’t judge it that way. You have companies subsidizing production of discs and not passing on the true cost to their consumers. You have small market where companies are investing strategically instead of economically. You have consumers not being price sensitive, buying $80 HD DVD/BD packages, etc. pushing a documentary and HD DVD test disc ahead of Hollywood titles in Amazon DVD rankings.

But as we look at this market, I think we all care about the time the format becomes mainstream. At that moment, you have to think of big numbers. I think I heard Warner alone stamps out close to half a billion DVDs a year! On that day, competition will be fierce forcing lower retail prices and cost of production will be a key factor.

On top of that, you have to look at where the supply comes from. HD DVD is not cheaper to produce because its plastics cost less than the same plastic used in BD . It costs less because it is possible to deploy it in existing DVD lines and as a result, just about any DVD line purchased in the last two years or so can, and many are making HD DVDs. This volume availability will invariably lead to lower cost due to higher level of competition for the business. You know, the old supply and demand rule in economics .

In addition, a typical BD line is $1.5M to $3M. Someone has to go and buy this line and dedicate it to making BD discs. And that cost will be passed on to people. Companies will not subsidize this business forever and certainly not through their competitors (i.e. one replicator helping the other). This is different again from HD DVD where the same line is already bought and being amortized on the backs of DVD business. So every day, we get more HD DVD capacity online, without having to lift a finger, or write a check.

Net, net, when we step out of the niche/artificial environment we live in, the strength of HD DVD comes into play strongly and result in lower cost to consumers. And yes, higher profits for some companies if the consumer/competition allows it.

Finally, on combo pricing, that has not hurt the sales of the discs as compared to other HD offerings in the eyes of studios. In the grand scheme of few titles making money, it is hard to argue the point strongly to the studios when a disc sells as well as non-combos. But again, once the market expands and true economics set in, the studios will get a better picture of whether they should charge the premium. But one thing is for sure. Combo discs are an incredible technical accomplishment and solve key consumer adoption problems. If we ever have hope of making these formats mainstream, we have to deal with the other “format war”: that of DVD and HD. The combo is the true “universal” format in that sense. So while like you, I am not happy that a premium is charged for it sometimes, I salivate at the thought of seeing DVDs being replaced one day with combo HD DVDs and consumers not even blinking. Connecting this with the BlockBuster discussion, combo HD DVDs can be shipped to them as DVDs and wind up in all of their stores, whether they make a conscious decision about carrying HD DVD or not. See how powerful of a card this is?

Oops, this became kind of long. Hopefully you didn’t expect a short answer.

Well screw Sony. I am canceling my Blockbuster membership over this. I would rather support Xbox Live HD marketplace than BD/Sony.

I am not too worried though. If you read Amir's posts carefully, it's fairly obvious they have a lot of cards up their sleeve still.

Freedom 1 First info of HD DVD/DVD Twin format disc:

Not to be confused with double-sided HD DVD/DVD combo discs, twin-format discs can contain up to three layers of recorded content on a single-sided disc. 'Freedom 1' uses two of those layers -- a 15GB HD DVD layer, and a 4.6GB standard-def DVD layer.

Yeay, disc artwork...

As for video quality, Kenneth says this first-ever anime release to hit high-def disc in the US looks excellent, boasting "vivid colors, perfect black levels, and crisply detailed linework." Considering the program's running time of only 25 minutes, arguably that's no great feat for a 15GB HD DVD, but it is an encouraging sign for both Microsoft and the disc's distributor Bandai, who reportedly worked together to tweak the VC-1 encode specifically for anime (http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/first-hd-dvd-dvd-twin-disc-hits-u-s-in-june-along-with-new-hdi/).

^^ I heard that it's crap.

Dunno how many people give a shit about this release but Bandai Visual sent me a review copy of Freedom, the "first anime to be released on HD-DVD".

It's a shitty, shitty value - 25 minutes for $39.99 - and the packaging is nonstandard, a recycled paper slipcover and a weird Japanese jewel case. It's the same size as a regular HD DVD case, though. Maybe a bit taller.

The show itself isn't much to write home about. The characters are designed by the same guy who did Akira, and they're animated in a 3D cel-shaded style, except the framerate kinda sucks because it's an anime, so anything moving that's not a machine looks awkward and jerky. Plot-wise it's postapocalyptic biker story, pretty standard stuff.

It looks great, and it's a flawless image, but the animation itself isn't very impressive so I'm not sure I'd even recommend it as something to show off your system.

Also, $39.99 for 25 minutes. :pwn:

What alot of forecasters dont realize is the PS3 could be a repeat of the PSP... new arbitrary format from Sony which the software SELLS DECENTLY for a while as there is nothing to play gamewise.... as games are released intrest in the format dies down because people generally buy PSP's and PS3's for games first (although I am an exception to the PS3 rule and I know of other too)

I dont think either format is going to gain the toehold like dvds (I kind of like that reminds me of dvds first months) ... they were released so far after VHS's inception that it made sense to upgrade, the quality was leaps and bounds over vhs... with HD and BR you really need a huge tv to really enjoy them as the difference in my 30" wasnt all that great, on my 61"... whoa baby!

HD DVD shrugs off Blockbuster move
Author: Tim Smalley
Published: 21st Jun 2007

The HD DVD Promotional Group isn't fazed by Blockbuster's move to expand its Blu-ray rentals to another 1450 stores, while not expanding HD DVD.
During a briefing with UK press in London yesterday, Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of High Definition Strategic Marketing for Universal Studios and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group, shrugged off Blockbuster’s move to expand Blu-ray to 1450 new stores in America.

Graffeo pointed out that rental counted for less than one percent of its revenue and brushed it off as an insignificant event in the format war.

Ken cited the fact that HD DVD is still being offered in the original 250 stores and through Blockbuster’s online rental service. He claims that those 250 stores are stores where there are large numbers of early adopters and the latter, he believes, is Blockbuster’s major growth market.

Thus, he is not fazed by Blockbuster’s decision. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that this is potentially a bigger win for Blu-ray than it is a loss for HD DVD, based on the figures he’s given to us.

He remained adamant that HD DVD was on top at the moment and claimed that dedicated HD DVD set top boxes are outselling Blu-ray set top boxes at a rate of three to one in the US. Personally I'm frustrated at them consistently trying to sidestep adding Lossless audio on anything. Even though I think Universal is mainly avoiding doing it for double dipping at LEAST they have included Dolby TrueHD tracks on SOME releases which is more then I can say for Paramount except for as of late perhaps. Is DTS HD lossless? If so then kudos for Paramount finally stepping up to delivering it.
Too bad it was too late for "Dreamgirls". As it stands I'm not touching that with Lossless. I might even be looser when it comes to an action flick but this is a film that depends directly on sound being it's a Musical and I find it INSULTING they could even think they could pass halfassing the audio here.

Found out that apparently there are 2 stores in Tampa that carry HD-DVDs for rent right now. Wish i would've known that, i would've tried to help in the war with my additional 9 instore rentals a week.

Not that the rental schematics of a dying company mean shit to the war. If anything, HD-DVD could just spin it around by saying "Blockbuster gets Blu-ray since no one actually wants to buy them, unlike HD-DVDS"

Nope, DTS-HD is a lossy codec similar to DD+, with the exception that it contains a "core" DTS stream that can be extracted and sent out via optical/coaxial without re-encoding.

DTS-HD Master Audio is DTS' lossless codec, analagous to Dolby TrueHD.

Planet Earth HD DVD= Best moneymaking hidef disc on EITHER format!

The high-definition DVD version of the Discovery Channel and BBC’s Planet Earth has sold about 45,000 copies. That’s “one for every five owners of a high-def disc machine, a ratio only a handful of DVDs have ever come close to,” USA TODAY reports.

Those sales translate to $3.2 million, “the biggest moneymaker yet to hit Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.” The set actually has “a list price of nearly $100 costs more than the average DVD player,” although it retails for around $65—still more than many DVD players.

The four-disc high-definition set has been available in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray; both have the British narration by David Attenborough, and are not the Sigourney Weaver-narrated US version. There’s also a standard DVD version. Today, the Discovery Channel starts selling HD versions of the US version.

Warner Home Video’s Ron Sanders tells the paper, “This series was made for high definition. Its success points to consumers wanting to see and hear high-definition content, and there isn’t a huge amount of content available from broadcast or cable or satellite.”

The BBC’s Burton Cromer tells the paper, “In a month and a half, we’ve sold more copies of Planet Earth across all three formats than we’ve sold of The Office or Fawlty Towers. And we don’t see any letup; in fact, we’re selling more units a day than when we first streeted.”

He attributes that success in part to Oprah, who talked about the series during two episodes of her show. “If you don’t think I have a shrine to Oprah set up in my office, you’re wrong,” he said.
‘Planet Earth’ looks great in HD — and to the BBC

Go HD DVD! :)

yea true but $30 + for a movie is ridiculous...

Just look at it this way, it's either paying 400+ for a Blu-Ray player or pay a little extra to get it on HD-DVD (or even worst not getting it at all in HD if it comes from an HD studio)

And that's why I said get more then one if you decide to import. My order came out to 32.08 per movie where if I would have ordered from an importer it would have been 35.45 per movie without shipping.

Toshiba sticks with the $299 Price Point for the HD-A2
Toshiba is sticking with the $299 price-point for its bottom-line HD DVD player after seeing a sales jolt when it introduced the lower price (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6442859.html) in May as part of a limited-time offer. The company said during a press event in New York Thursday that promotional prices introduced in May on its two lower-priced players would go into permanent effect July 1.

The entry-level HD-A2 player will stay at $299 and the HD-A20 at $399. The top-line HD-XA2 remains $799.

The company sold 100,000 set-top players in its first year on the market but has sold an additional 50,000 players since it began lowering prices in April.

I'm glad and seems to be on track for the long speculated $199 price point by around the start of '08. A smart move too, I don't think they could expect it to sell effectively if they didn't drop the price as many folk would just wait and wait around to jump in thinking it would get cheaper again.

Which Planet Earth episode would be good for that? Thanks.

I'm leaning towards the 8 from Warner but since Band Of Brothers hasn't had a date announced, will jump up 997 yens in price after release and is rumored to be using TrueHD discs, I'm tempted.

Well, I'm out of the game for at least two weeks. Goddamn fucking rush-it-out-the-door hardware. Fuck Microsoft.

Glad I just got 2 more movies with nothing to watch them on. Ugh.

Join the club except it was my hd-dvd attachment that ate shit.

I currently have 6 new movies (Being John Malkovich, Big Lebowski, Black Snake Moan, Meet Joe Black, Pianist, Prestige) and 2 from Blockbuster Online (Hustle And Flow, Flags Of Our Fathers) and I'm looking at another 2-3 weeks before I can watch them.

im waiting for your impressions on prestige..

if you dont like it you can always sell it to me lol

watching the fountain right now.

i cant believe the attachment crapped out.. mine has been solid so far.. when i had to send my old 360 in for repairs twice, i luckily connected the attachment to my pc... see having it not integrated is a plus sometimes.. ive always though the add on is a great value for the money because it can be used on pc as well..

since i got the elite i had had no problems at all

Is Being John Malkovich a decent movie? A friend says it was great and I generally trust him, but I'm a little wary.

I'll take photos of the box once I get some batteries for my camera.

I was surprised as hell when it decided to act up. I've never heard of it scuffing disc before and neither has support.

It's really weird, once you can jump that hurdle, it's good/decent. It reminds me of a less likeable Eternal Sunshine.

Hm, I guess I missed 300 becoming available for pre-order @amazon? I love how their "alert me when this title is available feature" works 2% of the time.

Anyway, I ordered at about $25 and change shipped after the 10% discount deal.

My 360 is on the fritz also (see COFFIN thread). It still works sort of, but I'm getting it replaced, as the 3 RED RINGS keep coming back.

I was able to watch DAYLIGHT on HD-DVD, then it died the next day. I have THE WATCHER in route from Blockbuster.com, so hopefully I can TRY to watch it before my 360 dies completely (or before I get my coffin).

I'm beginning to get more annoyed with the 360 lately...at least I have my PS3 to fall back on, just wish my BlockBuster store carried Blu-Ray.

You should cancel and grab it from Warner.

They have either a buy 2 get 15% off and free shipping or 20% (WBWEL) and free shipping after you buy 60 dollars worth of goods. Going the 20% route, it's only $23.96

Most people have reported that they recieve preorders 3-7 days in advance.

Yes one of the reviews listed on the case for The Pianist is "Hotdog"

- edit After a 30 minute wait to contact Xbox Support, they told me I should expect my unit back somewhere around the 14th since their repair center is backed up.

18 day turn around isn't so bad.

Thanks. Yeah, I did think about that, but there's not a lot I want to get that's Warner that I don't already have. Meh, it's only a couple bucks difference, plus I can't remember if they ship to Hawaii for free. That's usually the killing point of deals for me.

Yes.

There is no region lock on HD-DVD.

As for whether or not they are going to come out in America, it depends on the movie.

Out of the imports I own, it's possible for Mulholland Drive and The Pianist to come out here since Universal owns the American rights to both.

It's not possible for The Prestige, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Total Recall to be released in America on HD-DVD due to the rights being owned by Blu-Ray exclusive studios.

Go with the 8 from Warner. BoB will come out in the US and will be cheaper than importing when it does.

Maybe i missed it somewhere, but aren't the UK HD-DVDs still in PAL which would make them unplayable in the US?

Amir from MS dishes some slight info on LOTR for HD DVD.

Care is needed to get the absolute best quality. Fortunately, while I can’t say much about LOTR in public, I can tell you that a ton of care is being applied to its encoding. And the results are very nice from what I hear.

From the sounds of it, MS is working with New Line to get this release on HD DVD to be the perfect HD DVD.

The main question for me is when. If it's the middle of next year on a TrueHD disc, then I'm not very interested in the American release.

Here's the pros and cons I came up with for each one

Warner 8 Pros:
Alot of good movies
Quality is sure to be top-notch

Warner 8 Cons:
Will probably still be available in a few months

BoB Pros:
One of the best mini-series ever, months in advance
Since the pre-order price is cheaper than the Japanese retail, if it's bad then I could probably flip it with minimal loss

BoB Cons:
English menu still unconfirmed
Video quality unknown besides the fact it's encoded AVC
Japanese packaging

Maybe i missed it somewhere, but aren't the UK HD-DVDs still in PAL which would make them unplayable in the US?

No.
