There's still more to come on this, but here's the press release:

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

19 February, 2008

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

Also from the conference:
Q: Any plans to adopt Blu-ray?
A: No plans at all, not at this moment.

2/18 - MS to release Blu-Ray add-on this Spring? (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/rumor-xbox-360-blu-ray-player-could-be-out-by-may/)

No official word from Toshiba, board meeting happening soon (http://www.electronichouse.com/article/toshiba_no_decision_yet_on_fate_of_hd_dvd/)

2/14 -
Japan's NHK has followed up The Hollywood Reporter's earlier indications Toshiba was ready to dump its money-losing HD DVD business, with news that the company is prepared to cease manufacturing software and hardware, at a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. This caps the worst week ever for red, when HD DVD was dumped by Netflix and Wal-mart, pushed to the background by Best Buy and put on -- an apparently incredibly short -- deathwatch.

Along with an English translation of the NHK's article comes additional confirmation from Reuters sources, it's a wrap. Toshiba is shutting down its DVD manufacturing facilities in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, while official word is expected "soon".

I'm tempted to pre-order Clerks 2, but I wasn't a big fan of the film. Any early reviews on the quality of the transfer, etc?

Check highdefdigest (linked in the OP)....they said the transfer was decent, not great.

However, listening to the included audio commentaries on the disc, the transfer apparently looks exactly the way Kevin Smith intended, so I have to temper my disappointment by conceding to the sanctity of the filmmaker's vision.

So take that for what it's worth. Some people think high-def picture quality should be spotless/flawless no matter what, others think it provides the most room for delivering the picture exactly the way the filmmaker intended. For me it depends on the film - Casablanca and Full Metal Jacket, I don't care about PQ so much as the movie looking as intended. Something like one of the newer Star Wars films, which is a visual feast but a mess story-wise, I'd rather just have a showpiece that looks amazing. Then you get the movies that take the best elements of both (Batman Begins)...if only all movies struck that balance. That's the nice thing about the new formats though - you can get both.

I've heard it has more extras than the DVD version of Clerks II, not sure about that. The extras ARE in high-def though, which is rare.

I just got the HD-DVD add-on last week. I currently have King Kong (of course), V for Vendetta, Blazing Saddles, and Serenity. Clerks 2 is forthcoming.

Blazing Saddles really surprised me. It's amazing how clean they can make a 30-year-old movie if they make the effort.

Stay away from this shitty movie. Spend like $11-14 on something good with GCO at DVDPlanet.
Clerks II is a fine film, has certainly better performances than the first and is arguably better overall.

Highdefdigest gives almost every single movie out there no stars for high def extras (see for yourself), because VERY few films HAVE high def extras. And from that same review:

Smith and the View Askew crew have stacked the standard-def release with two discs of goodies, and happily all of them have made the jump to HD DVD. And as an added bonus, all of the video material is presented in full 1080p video. Sweet.

....so I'm kind of surprised that they gave it zero stars. Maybe an oversignt, or they don't include high def versions of DVD content "extras." I don't know.

I did revise my earlier post. This is the first time I've seen something not saying there were more extras on the HD-DVD (although to be fair, I've only seen 3 articles on it including this one). I suppose we'll find out in a few days.

Damn you and your informative links! It just convinced me to buy Hulk for $11.89 at buy.com with GCO.

That picture quality thread was linked in the OP of the add-on player thread! Hmph. I didn't even know GCO worked with dvdplanet, though. Nice.

And why doesn't anyone like King Kong? I thought they could have done a lot worse for a throw in.

I thought it was an ok pack-in, certainly equal to or better than that damn Will Ferrell movie with the PS3. Their options may have been a bit limited, as I'm sure they wanted something that a) wasn't R-rated b) was a Universal film and c) was a big budget/big hype film. Plus the picture quality came out arguably the best the format has seen to date, so it's a logical pack-in. Sure, there were other films I would have preferred, but I'm not griping about it. It's fine.

I saw Clerks and the rest of the Jersey trilogy. It's not that I didn't get the jokes in Clerks 2 I just didn't think they were funny. I'm not trying to rip on anyone, I just don't see how the jokes are able to stand on their own, or have the cleverness of, for example, Arrested Development inside jokes. It just seemed conceited to me.

DVDTALK.com gave FEARLESS a Collector's Edition rating (highest possible). I'll give it a rent if Blockbuster.com gets their poop together. (The HD/BD are lacking seriously)

Also, Talledega Nights as the PS3 pack in was a 25GB disc (not the unrated one). The PQ on that was not great....I'm still looking for another disc to get. I'd rather wait until there are more deal though, as I rent more now as I don't really watch movies twice.

LMAO at the TotalHD packaging. Why do I get the feeling that the format will confuse people even MORE? Now instead of two clearly marked formats (reddish-case vs. blueish-case), we'll have a half-red/half-blue case...probably sitting in-between them on shelves, no less.

If EVERY studio did that it would be fine, but you know Sony/Fox isn't budging anytime soon, and same goes for Universal.

General consensus is Fearless does have an excellent transfer - that dvdtalk review above says it's "reference quality" and arguably the best looking disc to date. AVS users at least partially agree - it's tier 1 (which is now the second highest since they've brought in a "tier 0" for blow-you-away picture quality discs like Hulk and King Kong. I have seen a few people saying Fearless is a bit soft, but that is likely nitpicking that always occurs whenever something is heavily praised.

Nothing yet, apparently. Same goes for Lionsgate, who was also rumored. The blow on Lionsgate is lessened for me though, since now that they're on XBLM and it's only a matter of time before a) a bigger hard drive is released and b) movies are available for purchase rather than rent.

Sony has more to lose here, and it's obvious they are laying everything they have into this to hang on to all the studios they can. Not that Toshiba et al aren't laying their ass on the line as well, but Sony has been in dire need of something like Blu-Ray to succeed and get them back moving forward.

I still don't see how one could "purchase" a HD movie over XBLA. Basically, we have 12GB of free space. A HD movie at the least is 15GB (DL=30GB)...although, that has been increased to 17-34 now. I would much rather own the physical copy of the disc.

I'm upset Lionsgate didn't jump. I love horror movies, and they seem to have a majority of them.

The SD version is the Theatrical version. THe HD side is the Unrated extended cut. There are actually quite a few differences and the extended version flows a lot better.

I'm more for them because they have at leasy one series I want in HD: Weeds. I might pick up "Deadwood" but most of the new American shows I want are from Showtime, at least one being from Sony("Huff"). Past that it's older CW Drama shows which Disney owns the rights to. Oh well, at least NBC Universal did "House", now where is it?
Also just wondering two things. What old Miramax movies does the new "Weinstein Company" have the rights to, specifically of the Jersey Trilogy and "Sin City"? And will I have a choice between True HD discs and HD-DVD or will I be forced to stomach paying the Blu-Ray cost?

i saw fearless in the theatres.. decent but a tad boring for my tastes.. not a fan of subtitled movies

That's funny. These days I more and more seem to enjoy foreign (subtitled) movies than American movies.

And dubbing a foreign movie ruins it horribly.

Phoebe Cates topless in slow motion is worth it, HD or no HD.

Seriously, it looks good enough for me, considering the movie's age. It gets a solid recommendation from DVDtalk. Probably a tier 2 or 3 in PQ, though.

Topless Phoebe Cates or not, I've heard this disc is definitely not something that "shows off" HD-DVD. If you have to have it, I'd stick with the much more affordable DVD.

Same for me with Full Metal Jacket.

As long as HD-DVD sticks around, I'm sure we'll see some double dipping in the future, so hopefully some of these early releases will get cleaned up later on. If you were around when DVD first hit, comparing an early (97-98ish) DVD to the same movie, rereleased and cleaned up in 2006 often reveals a large difference.

So what is the scene right now as far as HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray? I havn't really heard anything in a while, so perhaps you guys can set me straight. I am REALLY considering picking up the 360 HD-DVD drive for $160 with the CC coupon, but I don't want it to be worthless in a year or even two. The last I heard both formats were garnering support from the various camps but HD-DVD is selling better.... thoughts? What is the relative risk of picking up an HD-DVD now before the format has been chosen?

Blu-Ray has the advantages on paper, and had a more noteable showing at CES. With the PS3, the overall Blu-Ray disc sales have started to catch up.

It's hardly "over" though. If one bad showing at a trade show was all it took to sink a format, the PS3 would have been dead before it was released. Blu-Ray has an impressive lineup for 2007 and more studio support, but HD-DVD is still doing very well (compared to Blu-Ray at least...overall high def format sales are a bit sluggish). The recent "Pornogate" thing may give HD-DVD an advantage, and keep in mind Sony's media formats have tanked more times than not in the past.

It's still too early to say. HD-DVD does have 300 titles slated to come out this year, so there's bound to be at least a couple films each month you're interested in.

For 160 bucks it's pretty impossible to go wrong, I'd definitely get it while the coupon is valid if you're thinking about it. You're getting a player, a remote, and a movie for that price. Even if Blu-Ray does "win" a year or two down the road, it's not like all of a sudden the movies you bought on HD-DVD stop working.

If you don't want it to fail "a year or even two" down the road, then you shouldn't buy either format since there is no guarantee on either side. For me, the choice was easy - risk $500 on Blu-Ray, or risk $160 on HD-DVD.

I have the Harmony remote, too and I don't think it works well with the HD drive. There are issues with the in-movie menus (scene selection, etc.) on HD-DVDs that the Harmony has no button to directly correspond with.

But I have trouble with the pack-in remote ejecting the standard DVD tray and not the HD tray, as well, so who knows.

They do. It's called the Harmony 890.

I use an 880 with my HD DVD ad on with zero problems...the center button in the middle of the directional pad is my "click" for everything that needs an input in the menus...and there is a menu button on the harmony already.

EGM is a publication of full of sophmoric, unfunny douchbags who will soon cease publishing their piece of shit magazine as Ziff Davis continues to be picked apart. The HD-DVD player is fantastic, and shame on them for not at least trying another player (or another disc, for that matter) if they were having those kinds of problems. I own one, I know a friend who owns one, and I've tried nearly a dozen HD-DVDs (and dozens of DVDs on it) and have never had a single problem like that. Neither has he. It's pretty obvious from the hardware thread here that the many people who bought it on this forum are happy as well.

The main gripe is no HDMI, and that is a glaring issue, but as far as technical issues, none.

At least the HD-DVD player is capable of scaling properly thanks to the 360's software updates. The PS3 Blu-Ray is the best Blu-Ray player? Wow, Blu-Ray players must suck ass. They probably think it's the best because it has HDMI 1.3 or some other farce of a reason.

I shows how uninformed EGM is to say it is the owrst. There are only 2 HD-DVD players out that can do 1080p and the 360 is one of them. I have had great picture quality and no problems.

It may do 1080p, but only through VGA and into a monitor that accepts it, my 1080p JVC RPTV has the input for VGA, but will only output 480p from it, kinda sucks that I ordered the cable just for this, oh well, Ill probably just find an RGB cable for one of my old systems that accept it and plug it in that way (probably my model 2 genesis)

...and EGM's review on the player defiantely seemed biased, since all reviews Ive seen on the player have been glowing

Ok, I got my free EGM today and had literally only about 60 seconds before I had to get back to work. I did not see the comment about "choppy" playback (it's possible I missed it, I will look again when I have more time). I did see the reviewer, who only had a small corner box, say that they noticed add-on's picture was not as "sharp" as the PS3's, which is almost as asinine as the choppy comment, but whatever.

The overall tone of the article is certainly favoring Blu-Ray as far as who will win the format war, but I can't say I blame them in that regard.

And not to get too far off track, but the magazine looks like one of those starving kids on the commercials. I've seen gossip rags that are thicker than this month's issue. Back when EGM was relevant, once they got around to the holidays they'd frequently have issues that rivaled the size of your local telephone book. Yeah, that was partially due to ads, but there was a shit-ton of content to go with it....and it wasn't stuff that insulted your intelligence and tried to put humor before info.

Doubledown - did you have the DVD version of Clerks II? Just wondering if there really are exclusive extras or whatever. I should have my copy tomorrow if not.

Usually the magazines (seen this with alot of them) all seem to have less content around this time of the year. EGM also favored BR in the article because they were supposed to be getting porn, which we all know is not the case anymore... kinda stupid for them to pin so much of a formats success on whether or not they get porn movies. What annoys me with EGM is the frat boy insulting tone of the magazine, such as insulting reader mail with the frequency that they do. The worst was the article on Rumble Roses (I think, it was one like that) which featured a picture of some dude in a bathroom stall looking at pics of the game and jerking hinself off, it was stupid.

I prefer Tips and tricks but dont want to pay for that or any mag

and on topic, Clerks 2 was pretty nice in the HD, you can see every little crater in these actors faces

Amazon isn't thrilling me with their new release shipping speed...Clerks II is the second disc in a row (the first being Fearless) that was delayed a few days before shipping. Still, I guess the 10% off discount is worth the wait. If I get tired of waiting for Clerks II I'll just pick it up at Best Buy and return the Amazon copy when it arrives. They shipped the Clerks II disc yesterday, but I just checked the tracking as I was posting this and it still says "carrier notified to pick up package." Jeez, slow down guys.

Here's the full quote from the EGM article...this'll be the last I say about it, since this is more suited for the hardware thread anyway....

After an easy set-up and navigation via the familiar XBox 360 dashboard, flicks like Serenity and The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift played lag-free even when in-movie special features were activated. Colors, however, were slightly muddled and fine details were a little fuzzier compared to the other HD-DVD drives.

BOTTOM LINE: Among the worst players out there, but what do you expect for $200? (Stand-alone units cost twice that.)

He also says the PS3's Blu-Ray image is sharper than the 360's HD-DVD counterpart. Considering he didn't cite any examples of movies he used in the sharpness comparison, I'm not sure what to make of that. Some movies are not meant to be "razor sharp." He does mention Silent Hill and Little Man Blu-Ray discs as having "nigh flawless color contrast."

All of this sounds like stuff easily tweakable via your TV's setup menu, so I wouldn't give much thought to what was said. Not sure if the muddled colors he cites on the 360 are prior to or after the VGA color was improved.

"Among the worst players out there" just sounds really uninformed to me, especially since most other "professional" reviewers liked it. There aren't even that many HD-DVD players available, wording it like that makes it sound like you have dozens of players to choose from.

Usually the magazines (seen this with alot of them) all seem to have less content around this time of the year.

I know, I'm just comparing it to what it was like in the early/mid 90's. Even the "lean" months like this issue would still be a respectable size. I had a subscription for several years (from issue 12 around 1990 to somewhere 1996-ish), then I got out of games for a few years, sporadically picking up an issue here and there. When I found a free subscription deal on here and started getting it regularly again, I was extremely disappointed by what a piece of crap it had turned into.

At least there's consistency now with new releases coming every week for the next 2 months. Unfortunately the next one I'm definetly planning on picking up will be The Departed. Those fuckers at Best Buy better have it out on the shelf on release day too...

Do you have "Infernal Affairs"?

Also just a few titles I'm going to drop here that I have my suspicions may come out or at least hope will: "An American Tail", "Jurassic Park", An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" and "The Land Before Time". I suspect "The Nutty Professor" might make a showing this year and I hope "The Hurricane" will being it's a strong Denzel pic.
Something to note, all these flicks are from Universal and therefore HD-DVD exclusive. I also wouldn't be surprised if "House MD" ends up coming out this year.

you guys are actually buying new releases b&m? wow.....

I do for 2 reasons. The first is that I usually want a movie right away rather than waiting for it and the second is that I want B&M stores to carry future HD-DVD releases so if they see they're selling that's more likely to happen in the future. If everyone just bought their HD-DVD titles online, B&M stores would just stop carrying them. With a new media format its crucial for stores to see a consumer interest so they realize its worth it to carry them.

Sarang01

Also for the other consumers shopping there to know what it is RVB since BB and others are trying to play the Blu-Ray Propogandafest or at least some are.

It is always this way when I new format launches, as people did when dvd launched, early adopters are videophiles who want the best source material in which to show off thier fancy av systems

Heck, I will probably pop in Hulk or King Kong when I have company

Also I agree about the ridiculous B&M prices, if I HAVE to guy in store Ill go to Moviestop (I know they are hard to come by) since they seen to beat BB by about 5 bucks per movie, picked up Clerks 2 there for 20 last week

All the WB titles at Target are $20 (I get 10% off at Target with employee discount). Best Buy has most of their HD-DVD titles at $24.99. Miami Vice was $30 at Walmart (which isn't too much more than what it would cost online).

The only really good deal for buying HD-DVDs online right now is the $10 google checkout deal. Before the Google checkout deal came alone there really wasn't that much savings for buying it online definetly not enough for me to justify having to wait for it.

Yeah I don't think the WB prices look terrible myself. Too bad they had no really old movies like "Casablanca" available for me to bag. Btw RVB is the HD DVD stock pretty much the same at all Targets or what? I saw "Batman Begins", "Apollo 13", "The Last Samurai" and "The Bourne Supremacy" to name a few. Btw where's "The Bourne Identity"? Was it released yet because I don't think it was.
Question is the Chicago and EWF HD DVD any good?

Well I got it in the mail today and just got done watching it a little bit ago.

It looks amazing. Some of the stock war footage from the flashback scenes doesn't look very good but I'm assuming that has more to do with original source material than the transfer. In fact, its kind of interesting that there's such a discrepency between the two film stocks in the movie because it really shows you how well the digital transfer was done. There are some downright amazing 3d effects in the movie where the scene really feels like its extending out of your tv. Its not the best looking HD-DVD (can anything top King Kong really?) that I've seen but it is really damn good.

Sweet. Has anything even been said for when this will hit BR? Just curious.

Btw is anyone here besides myself willing to write Universal asking them to release any of the two American Tail's or "The Land Before Time" this year? I mean I could really do seeing some good hand drawn stuff in the style of Bluth or Disney. I'd say Anime but I'm thinking of a more subdued color palette as well as gentler lines

I don't think anything at all has been announced for Casablanca on Blu ray. WB is barely keeping up as it is with moving their titles over to BR. Given the lackluster push for Casablanca (not even seeing B&M stores carrying it) I wouldn't be surprised if they just skipped it on blu ray altogether....

I can appreciate your desire for An American Tail but Universal has much more pressing matters to attend to first. Those matters would include Jurassic Park, Dawn of the Dead remake, and the Back to the Future trilogy. Once those have been handled we can worry about An American Tail. ;)

Was the "Batman Beyond" movie shot in 1080p or film though? The reason I ask is because it seemed to be direct to video to my knowledge. "ShreK" would be ok I guess but I'd prefer hand drawn. I mean Disney is releasing "Cars" anyway. I think Dreamworks would do well to release "My Sassy Girl" over here on HD DVD since they own the rights to it here.

No doubt about Dreamworks. Almost none of their stuff has been released on either. "Eurotrip" and "Road Trip" would be great to see as well as "Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy".

From the article linked in the post above this:

Among the additional new titles to be released in 2007 are the Oscar®-nominated Children of Men, the critically acclaimed epic drama The Good Shepherd, and the high-octane Smokin' Aces. Also on deck for release this year are such highly anticipated catalog favorites as Bruce Almighty; The Bourne Identity; Meet The Fockers; American Pie; Inside Man; Pride & Prejudice; The Big Lebowski; Liar Liar; Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels; Brazil; Erin Brockovich; Shaun of the Dead; Dawn of the Dead; Slap Shot; and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Man...not one film among those I want. Still, it's a decent variety of stuff I suppose.

Will be interesting to see if they get to their projected 300 titles (total, not just Universal). I don't see why they couldn't if they really do release 100 this year.

It's usually going to just depend on how much effort/money they put into it. Casablanca, while not being a title I purchased, looks about as amazing as it can get. Meanwhile, Christmas Vacation (which I wouldn't buy either), from less than 20 years ago, looks like crap by comparison.

Scarface is one of their bigger-name offerings, so I'd assume they'll put a good amount of work into it.

I don't know how legit that that list is with the exclusives. One of the Blu Ray commercials has Harry Potter in it. But anyway that's a nice list and some good movies to look forward to.

Yeah, keep in mind that list is upcoming releases that have awhile before they are out and it's for Europe which lends to it naturally being a different list from us as well.

My guess is some of special features (perhaps this IME) are probably HD-DVD exclusives, but not necessarily the releases themselves. I can't see why Warner Home Video would not release the absolute cash cow that is the Harry Potter on only one of two HD formats they publish for. Same goes for the Matrix films...

Seems like a bad disc. I found a thread on DVDtalk that is talking about the same problems I'm having. I ordered a replacement and will send back the bad disc when it arrives.

The reason why they are listed as HD-DVD exclusives is because this release list if from France. Its a totally different ballgame in Europe and Asia, thus HD-DVD discs that are BluRay exclusives ehre in the US. Distributions rights for movies can change from country and country and where in the US it may be a "dual" release in Europe it may be HD-DVD exclusive.

Warner has laready said that in the US that thier releases would be released on both formats. THis is for the US only though and not internationally.

Just to add to that (and you are correct), one of the really annoying things going on right now with US releases is Warner holding titles back until Blu-Ray functionality catches up to HD-DVD. We see a rare exception (Batman Begins already out on HD-DVD, it'll be a while before Blu-Ray's version is out), but for the most part, they are waiting until Blu-Ray gets updated to handle the IME features of HD-DVD. This plays into their Total HD disc.

Sigh.

That's true but it would turn my stomach at this point to support Sony's once-again attempt at cornering an entire format. I will not support Bluray until it becomes clear that it will beat HD DVD.

Lionsgate seems to have no problem releasing their movies in HD-DVD in other regions. Its only the US that they seem to be holding back on. I'm thinking its the same reason as fox, the preceived notion that blu-ray is harder to hack.

See I totally agreed with that a couple months ago. I ended up getting a PS3 the past week. I had the HD DVD drive but I wasn't to happy with it. It was a decent HD DVD player and great for the price but picture quality wasn't as good as some other players (which was expected). Also it hurts but a lot more movies come out on Blue Ray that I want. I like Universal and a bunch of there movies but it hurts when they are the only exclusive. I went Blu Ray for the amount of movies out and coming. I know there are a bunch of HD DVDs coming but Universal itself just isn't enough for me. Dom enjoy being asked to pay through the nose for those exclusives, new and old. Some 2 year or older movies are costing $25-30 on BR when they'd cost $20 most likely or a little more on HD DVD. I'm thinking of the combos here. Even "Clerks 2" is $20. You know if that was a BR exclusive it would cost near $25.

I haven't payed more than $17 for a Blu Ray disc yet. I either get them online with good deals or find them used. I don't plan on rebuying movies either until they are a decent price. And I'm not trying to make this into a flame war of which one is better. I think they both have pros and cons. Like I said I will be picking up a better HD DVD player in the near future. Your comments though don't really make sense. You say some 2 year old Blu Ray movies are $25-30 and would cost a little more on HD DVD then $20. And then you said if Clerks II was on Blu Ray it would be $25. So that's really only a few dollar difference.

First off "Clerks 2" is a new release, the DVD version came out in November and the HD DVD version came out in January and is now $20 as well as the DVD. I'm saying if it was on BR as an exclusive like it is for HD DVD it would be $25 at the cheapest instead.
"The Mummy" and "The Bourne Supremacy" are both $20 on Amazon and while one is more than a couple of years old and the other isn't they're both older, exclusive and fairly cheap. If these were older exclusive BR's they'd easily cost more. See where I'm coming from Dom?

I do see where you are coming from but if you are talking about Amazon there are a good bunch of Blu ray movies that are at that $19.99 price point that HD DVD doesn't have. Sure some are a little more expensive right now but like I said I won't be looking to buy those until they are cheaper.

That's...interesting. You'll forgive me if I'm skeptical, most users I've seen have no qualms about the picture quality. The only time I've seen griping about the 360's HD-DVD picture quality was in the questionable EGM mini-review of it.

I think a lot of the time people don't have their sets calibrated properly, that can make a noticeable difference, especially on nicer HDTVs.

Can't argue with your point about more movies you want being on Blu-Ray, though...there are certainly plenty of movies that would be Blu-Ray exclusive that I would want.

For me it's not a problem, I can still buy it on DVD and it'll look better than normal while upconverted. Having it in true HD is just the icing on the cake. That is, it's not worth another $500-$1000 (or more) to me just to be able to see the same thing in higher res.

Once we get a reasonably priced dual format player, or, if Blu-Ray wins, a reasonably priced Blu-Ray player, I'll get one.

I'm not saying the picture quality is bad from HD DVD add on but it is not as good as some of the HD DVD players that are out. My TV also is professionally calibrated. But to get back to the point of the thread Universal needs to pump out some HD DVD movies. Jurassic Park is on the top of my list from what I would want from them.

I am a frequent lurker on avsforum.com and I have never seen any proof of that claim. Besides the fact that the HD DVD add-on is very upgradeable (intended to be connected to live whenever on) makes it arguably the most future proof HD DVD player on the market.

I went Blu Ray for the amount of movies out and coming. I know there are a bunch of HD DVDs coming but Universal itself just isn't enough for me.

So I guess you didn't realize that boycotting studios that currently don't support HD DVD by not buying their movies on bluray actually WORKS - as far as getting them to support HD DVD if enough people do it?

I'm not trying to argue, but you obviously didn't feel any disgust for Sony like you claimed or you'd care about voting with dollars.

Ok well I'm not going to argue about the HD DVD drive. And I don't totally disgust Sony buy I am not happy with certain things they do. I understand what you are saying about boycotting but I'm not trying to make a difference. I just want the movies I want in HD. I never hated the Blu Ray tech and I don't HATE Sony. If they do win the war oh well. They are not my first choice as a gamer but I can deal with them. I would prefer HD DVD to win but it's hard to support them right now with the lack of movies. Like I stated before I still will be purchasing a stand alone HD DVD unit in the near future and if a movie comes out on both most likely I will be picking it up on HD DVD. And I hope Universal picks up and starts releasing some of there big guns.

Funny you should say you were not happy with the PQ on the ad on--because as a long time poster on AVSforum as well as an owner of both a Tosh A2 + HD DVD ad on for the 360 I can tell you that there is no discernable difference in PQ between the two players whatsoever.

It's fine that you went BR and sold your HD DVD player, but it would probably be best to just keep the fanboyism inside and be happy with the switch. I don't really understand the need to bash the player when you are unhappy with the movies that are out for it.

Interesting stuff huh? What makes it even more interesting is what he posted in the thread he posted about his ebay auction trying to unload his HD-DVD drive addon...

All of the HD DVDs have never been used either. They are all not sealed though. I opened them up and they were on my shelf. I haven't had time to watch them and when I got my PS3 I decided to go Blu Ray and sell the HD DVD stuff.

So I wonder how he knew what the picture quality of the HD-DVD drive was if he never watched any HD-DVDs on it and left it new and sealed?

He's full of shit that's how he knows RVB. Chuckle. If Dom owned a 360 before a PS3 remind me how $200 for the add-on alone Is a bad deal. You can argue the price of the 360 but I think if you've bought it and had it for a while that argument is moot. Funny thing is if Sony is phasing out the 20 GB. model like I've Heard and MS drops the price of the add-on to $100 this Christmas WHO has the cheaper system with high def movies and games? Also I doubt Sony will be able to match MS's sheer number of games for the 360 by Christmas.

LOL "My Sassy Girl" never heard of this one until you mentioned it, but looking from the reviews it would be a tough sell to get the "Managers" approval on that import ;) at about 35-40+ (depending on where they come from) I ahve to be selective on my imports....

If you are looking for news on it I ahvent seen any as of yet it is not one of the "popular" movies so it will be a tough find.....The distributor is PMP Entertainment and I am not sure who they are affiliated with and if this is a "less" popular catalouge release it may be some time if ever that it gets released......

"Popular"my ass. It was a hit in South Korea and judging by the fact it's being released in Japan already I'd say it's a hit there as well.
I MEANT buying it for yourself. It's a cute, eccentric Romantic comedy.

I understand that....I was trying to say that I havent seen the HD-DVD available anywhere (you said you have the dvd then say you want the HD-DVD autographed) I tried to imply that I would ahve to think about it (purchase of the DVD as DVDs (SDDVD) are a low priority for my at this time.....I thought my previous post was clar that I knew you ahd the DVD and that you were asking me why wasnt it on MY (want to import) list, I tired to explain that I have never heard of it until you mentioned it and now I will put it down, BUT it would be low on my list.....I guess there was some misscommunication there :)

THIS is the one I meant since I have the feeling the third disc is the soundtrack which isn't exactly easy to find. However back in the day it wasn't that expensive. I WILL say as soon as a next gen. LE of this comes out on either format that ends up winning I'll buy.

At least some outlets comment on what was said with something meanignful if they don't ask questions. And I read the headline, that's all I needed to see. It's not the first time this story was reported and Joone was quoted by somebody by it, this has been reported since all the followup to CES so I didn't need to read the interview to know it was a guy. Besdies just relax, I was simply expressing my opinion on how poorly they conduct interviews. Maybe to you it was out of line or something, but it's not something you should take personally.

KaneRobot

Yes it reads more like an "article" than an interview, since half of the follow-ups are the equivalent of "yes" or "really?" That doesn't mean it's not worth a read; the interesting parts are the answers, not the questions...just like almost every other interview done in the history of life.

xploitedcinema.com is a mentioned alot at avsforum. There are alot more us blu-ray exclusive movies coming out on import HD-DVD soon like Underworld Evolution in April too. Of course since they are imports they are more expensive, but I guess if you're only buying a few imports its still cheaper than buying a blu-ray player.

Just got my hd-dvd player today from EB ($120 used ^_^). Didnt come with King Kong unfortunately, so i bought Corpse Bride to hold me off til i get some of the $9.50 hd-dvds from Buy.com. Picture quality is really great. Even my normal dvds @ 480p seem to look better than dvds on my 1080i upconverting player.

I guess its just my frugality. But damn BR & HD-DVD discs are expensive in stores. Thank god for Google Checkout ^_^. Just ordered V for Vendetta, Goodfellas & Fast Times @ Ridgemont High. I'd order more but im out of credit cards to make accounts with. Gonna invest in some of those virtual ones they sell at CVS.

Arg, Xploited Cinema has Running Scared. Unfortunately its $32. I sure hope it gets released over here sometime soon.

Are you using a VGA cable or compoent? I'm assuming component since you said 480p.

Regardless, I have a similar reaction. I have one of the higher end Panasonic upconverting DVD players (w/Faroujda chip), but honestly between that and the 360 via VGA cable, the 360 actually looks better. I have no idea why, but I'm not griping. I'll just sell the standalone player and free up some space.

Just a head's up, Goodfellas and FT@RH aren't exactly a shining example of HD-DVD's picture quality. It's not a deal-breaker or anything, but don't expect to be blown away. For the prices you can get them via GCO, though, it's definitely worth it.

Yea, im using Component. I've been looking into the VGA cables. My local GS supposedly has 4+ of the VGA cables for $9.99 each. Guess ill try my luck tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up on Goodfellas & Fast Times. I wasnt really expecting stunning quality with the older movies, just wanted to build up a nice collection. For $11.40 & $14~ shipped, i really cant complain too much. Today i also bought King Kong, since my player didnt come with it. Bad news on the Spielberg HD-DVD's:

Unfortunately, it seems the Spielberg trio was a bit premature. Today, the HD DVD Promotional Group has removed the offending titles from its list, and issued a full apology (http://www.hddvdprg.com/eng/list.html) via its website:
The inclusion in the January 29 update of our 'Coming Soon List' of three Steven Spielberg classics was an error on our part. The HD DVD Promotion Group expresses sincere apologies to Steven Spielberg, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and HD DVD fans for this mistake. We will endeavor to prevent any similar mistake and to provide accurate information.
As for Universal's response to the news, they continue to express the same sentiments as always regarding any big A-list titles from top directors. A request for comment from the studio brought this now-canned response, first made by Ken Graffeo, EVP of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, regarding the studio's 2007 HD DVD plans:
Universal feels the key to getting a great HD DVD disc is filmmaker participation. They have been educating filmmakers about the possibilities for interactivity, picture and sound available with HD DVD. There are other challenges like scheduling that come into play when working on DVD/HD DVD releases with filmmakers. Universal is committed to working with filmmakers whenever possible to put out the best quality presentation they can.
