I just got a new x360 but I kept the hard drive. Well it seems I cant play my purchased xbl games unless I'm online (I'm wired but disconnect to share with pc), I deleted them and put re downloaded them again but still cant play them (only trail version) offline, why?
Thanks for any info.

yup... i've had the same issue.... call microsoft.... they'll tell you to create a new silver account and after 5 minutes-7 days, they will give you the points to re-download the games on the new account..... it sucks and they should allow a method to authorize the current system for offline play.

It all has to do with the protection method they are using for downloaded content. If you read through the sticky I wrote about half-priced content, there are some details in there so that you can get a better understanding of how the DRM on Live Marketplace works.

To sum it up, downloaded content is locked in two ways.
1) It can always be played on the original console it was downloaded on by anyone online or offline.
2) Iit can always be played by the gamertag that purchased it regardless of console, but only online.
Now that you have a replacement console, 1 is no longer an option so you can only use 2. There is no fix, but MS can (eventually) credit you the points to redownload the content on your new Xbox so 1 becomes an option again.

Has anyone actually done this? Just curious. I was always annoyed about being stuck in trial mode for my games if I took the 360 to a friend's house that didn't have internet available.

It was a hit and miss for me. They were only willing to issue points for games they could verify on their system. Out of 36 arcade games at that time, they were only willing to give me points for 13.
I usually just sign myself and my wife at the beginning of any long session to avoid it. Its a pain the ass, but I'm not going to foot a partial bill because Microsoft can't verify some of my purchases.

i have, twice.... so i have 1 gold and 2 silver accounts because of this.... i really don't want another silver account if something happens to this xbox.... so i really hope they change the policy soon.

They give you the points or a code to redownload the specific games? I'm sending mine off soon for repair and it is doubtful I will get mine back. Could I call them and get points and use them to download different stuff? Hmmm...

You can't do a recovery to fix this? I thought that was the point of account recovery.

Is there a list of XBL arcade games that are worth downloading? I would like to see some rating on what people recommend. I tried to search on this website but I get a memory error. I think this server is in need of a reboot.

the 1st time, they just tacked the point onto the gamertag i gave them. the second time they gave me 2 1600 point codes to enter (i only spent like 2000 on stuff, so free points!) but i rather them just break the connection with 1 system and authorize the new one. what if someone gets a refurb back, dl's a demo, and it works as the full version since the previous owner paid for it?

This is why ALL THREE COMPANIES need to switch to Apple's method that allows you to authorize and deauthorize a system as many times as you want. It's completely fair for the company, and it's much more fair for us, as it means you just need an internet connection the very first time you get a new system, and after that all your old games will get reauthorized.
I have NO idea why ALL THREE companies were too stupid to do this. I'm also mad at gamers willing to put up with such restrictive DRM.

I just called microsoft and they told me to fax over the receipts from best buy to show proof that I got an exchanged system. Is this a proper process?

Agreed, the Apple method is much friendlier to the customer.
Only getting credit for half of my bought games, as described above, would make me furious.

And how. My 360 (all of six weeks old ... ) is off for repair as we speak, and I'd be much happier with the situation if it worked like you suggest, rather than the gnawing anger I'm starting to feel over the inconvenience.
