do you need the microsoft wireless adaptor, or will any USB wireless adaptor work?

The only USB adapter that will work is the official one. Other ethernet adapters/bridges will work including the one for the original xbox.

You need the MS adapter, it's not standard. Your only option for cheap wireless is a wireless bridge plugged into the Ethernet port.

I had serious stability problems with the MS wireless adaptor and my Apple Airport wi-fi router. All of my settings were good, but a few minutes into being on Live and it would drop to solid red. Again and again and again. Best part is that it also locked my system, forcing a reboot each time.

Thankfully, I bought it at Sears and was able to return it with no problems. Might work fine with other routers (check xbox.com for the compatibility list), but gave me fits with my set up.
