I'm a huge Asimov fan. I think he's one of the great american writers.
But I'm watching these commercials about I, Robot the movie and it doesn't seem at all in the spirit of the story. I can't judge the movie because I haven't seen it or even read a review. But it seems to not be at all in the spirit of his works. Which is a shame because I doubt if he was alive he would approve a film that's just a simplistic action flic about robots taking over the world a-la Independence Day.

I'm a huge Amizov fan. I think he's one of the great american writers.
Not big enough of a fan to know that it's spelled Asimov.
Sorry, you know someone else would have made that comment.

The movie features Will Smith. Hear that spinning sound? It's Asimov in his grave.
Maybe a competent director with a better appreciation of Asimov will get to do a movie about Caliban.

You would think someone who's a huge ASIMOV fan could at least spell his name correctly, if not consistently.

I didn't actually read it. I wasn't sure if it was about Asimov, Azimov, or Amizov, so I decided to mock him now, then wait for an edit.

It is indeed called I, Robot. But don't get the version with Will Smith on the cover. Just out of principle.

If it has Will Smith on the cover, it's likely based on the movie. I think they did a re-release of the original with a red cover not long ago.

Hehe, thanks for catching that. I'm half asleep and my head is still spinning from the CC sale. I didn't even come close to spelling his name right. But if you notice most of my posts have mispelling slike that. I have slight dyslexic tendencies in my writing.
Oh, and Caliban wasn't written by Asimov, so Touche! The director should have an appreciation of Roger McBride Allen.

I love the space battle in Return of the Jedi. I remember the first time I saw it I got angry when it switched from the space battle to Luke or Endor. Im still mad that we got so little of the space battle.
And about the I, Robot book it says that its part of "The Robot Series". Is there sequels to I, Robot?

It's a collection of shorts. Now, if they made a movie, they should have done the Caves of Steel. It's a murder mystery. It has a couple good action sequences. Great setting in a cavernous underground megacity. And great characters.
There are several books that are collections of his robot short stories. Then there is a number of complete books that link together with the foundation series. The Caves of Steel is the "starter" of the series, depending on your perspective. His short stories came first, but of the three main full robot books he wrote early on, the Caves of Steel comes first. So, start with that.

I know this. But it's a spinoff of sorts of I, Robot, thus it would be logical for a sequel.
/has Caliban and Inferno staring him in the face

Dammit, no one should see this movie. Read the book instead. It pains me to see the commercials because the movie just looks stupid. This has been my away message for a while now
You’ve been a bad boy
You broke all the rules
You’ve been a bad boy
You’ll get yours paid in full
Read the book I, Robot
July 16
Don't see the movie
It's just a terrible idea.

I remember when I, Robot appeared at the bookstores. It was a big seller and it made the New York Times bestseller list in the '80s.
From what I know, there is 3 robot books written from Asimov and "I'Robot" is the third in the series.
I read the first book in the series (the name of the book is called "Robots of Dawn") and it was a pretty good detective story. Its fairly intelligent and well written...
--------------------------
As for the movie, its doesn't look anything like what I thought Asimov is all about. Personally, I am getting sick of Will Smith mugging up the screen. He was good in Prince of Bell Air and that movie Six Degrees of Separation...But lately, he's acting the same exactly way in every movie. Now I find him boring....

'I, Robot' the Asimov anthology is much older than the 80's. It was first published in 1950 and thus pretty ancient when I first read it when I was 8 years old in 1972. Back in those days you could pretty much read all the worthwhile SF in existence in less than a year.

Trivia note, 'I, Robot' the anthology is a collection of Asimov's stories but 'I, Robot' the short story is a Eando Binder short story published in 1939. This was the collective pen name of the Binder brothers.
http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/authors/Otto_Oscar_Binder.htm
This story was made into an episode of the original 'Outer Linits' and again in 1995 with Leonard Nimoy playing the lawyer for a robot on trial for murder. The new movie also lifts some elements from this story.
The Binders were very influential but almost nobody knows who they are anymore. They also wrote some superhero comics in the Golden and Silver ages which lead to them doing a novel based on Marvel's The Avengers with the mid-60's lineup. (Capt. America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Hawkeye.)

Meanwhile the award-winning 'I' Robot' screenplay by Harlan Ellison goes unproduced. Asimov couldn't write for the screen if his life depended on it but Harlan wrote a great movie true to Asimov's stories.

The series you're talking about (Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and The Robots of Dawn) aren't really sequels to 'I, Robot.' They revolve around Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics plot device but they don't have any direct connection to the 'I, Robot' stories.

Hmm... I've heard of Asimov's book but I didn't realize the connection between it and the movie. I was considering watching the movie but I'll just pick up the book...

Thanks for the correction. Sorry, my memory isn't the best. It has been since the early 80's since I read "Robots of Dawn".
