Very interesting:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36942

In the end, Blu-ray will wither and HD-DVD will overtake it in just about every non-technical way, which is what matters. The hobbling and ill will generated by the early power grabs and walled gardens are going to doom both in favour of the internet.

If you look at history, all the precedents are there, Beta, Laserdisk and most recently the PSP. Proprietary and closed simply does not work, history shows the people care more about the things they want than the box it came in. Both formats are doomed, HD-DVD is just a little less doomed than Blu-ray. µ

Is this the same Inquirer as this one (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96290)? If so, there's not much else that needs to be said.

Interested about the "non-technical way" comment. Most people who have reviewed the formats tout HD-DVD as having superior interactivity and, at least one the early releases, superior picture quality.

If they're just talking about space, I guess it makes sense, but even then HD-DVD just unveiled a 51 GB disc at CES that should be in use "eventually."

I personally feel that porn will not be as important as it was in the past. What people tend to forget is that the Internet has made porn incredibly easy to access compared to the days of the betamax vs VHS war.

Besides, porn is porn, no matter what resolution you watch it at.

There are going to be two things that win this format war and its who over gets the most movie studios and the one with the most/best advertising. Right now Sony is winning in both of those departments. A day does not go by that I don't see a commercial for a DVD where at the end the announcer says or is written on screen "available on DVD and Blu Ray Disc". I get people at work all the time asking what is this new Blu Ray, and basically no one coming is asking to be told about HDDVD.

When you compare the amount of money the Porn Industry takes in sales wise compared the other movie studios they are a very small portion of the market. Porn will not make anywhere near the difference it did before. We are talking about something from a format war that took place around 25 years ago.

No, history will not repeat. Porn in 1979 had nothing like the availability of today. I can remember seeing my first porn movie on Super 8 running on a clickety little projector. The Pussycat Theater chain had a lot of locations doing good money. The advent of porn on video cassette was like a nuke going off for the porn industry. The customer base exploded as the industry was now better able to offer discreet access to the product in a form that was far less likely to be seized by overzealous postal officials.

Today, things couldn't be more different. Porn on the internet is so readily available people have to take care to avoid it, if that is their preference. Porn in 1080p has a market but it is a market well saturated with competing platforms.

Are you really going to notice the increased resolution while you're spanking it?

Is there a reason why Blu-ray gets compared to UMD, Beta, and MiniDisc?

Blu-ray is a collaborative effort that involves Sony as well as several other companies. This is more similar to DVDs or CDs.

Honestly, who even buys porn anymore?

Indeed.

I'm sure Porn still makes a huge amount of cash with DVD sales, but it won't be nearly as important as it was back in the VHS days. Back then, there were no other viable solutions to watching porn at home. Now we have: Internet, Pay Per View, VHS, and DVD.

I hear you dpatel, I have been saying that on every forum debateing the issue for months. Only thing, it always falls on deaf ears. I think it's because it's the in style thing to bash Sony. People forget that Sony was one of companies behind DVD and CD. The other ironic part is it was with alot of the same companies its invested with on Blu-ray.

Haha sorry Cheapy, was not meant as a burn on you. I just feel that the vast availability of pornography today fills a void that existed during those early format wars. Personally I feel that neither format is necessary, I watch upscaled DVDs through VGA on my 32" LCD and it's AOK.

Anyone want to try getting that many 3-letter acronyms in one sentence.? ;)

I think its because Sony wasn't as aggressive at promoting dvd and CD as they are with Blu-ray. People see Sony's aggressive tactics that they are using to promote blu-ray, and mistakingly think Sony is the sole company behind the format (like UMD, Beta, and Minidisc). The truth is blu-ray is a collaborative effort which involves sony.
