I bought this 19" Widescreen LCD for 360 gaming yesterday...

for about $260. ($299-$40 coupon)

Now, when I played Marvel Ultimate, the game looked amazing. I saw detail I never knew was in the game. Battlefield also looked excellent.

But, when there is just a black screen (say while loading), the screen looks rather grainy. Also, I noticed while playing Rainbow Six, the dark colors got slightly darker and brighter as I moved around.

Is this the TV, or is this common to LCD gaming?

check the contrast ratio. since lcd are not that great in showing the color black, this might be why there is some grains on the screen.

Thanks

Should the contrast be high or low?

I've heard that LCDs have a hard time with black before. How could this be, since a black pixel is off?

You want the TV to have a high contrast ratio, but keep in mind that it's not just a single factor like that that'll make the TV look good or bad. As for LCDs having issues with black levels -- it's just part of the technology. Some LCDs are better than others at displaying blacks, but that shouldn't be creating blocking like that on the screen. Having crappy black levels just means that black looks more like gray.
