What I mean is once people start discovering custom hacks will the systems with the original firmware installed become more valuable than those made later or updated by users?

I've noticed there is a bit of a premium placed on PSP units that still have firmwares in the 2's or back to 1.5. I personally never got into the emulation thing so I updated mine.

I doubt it, since you can install Linux at any point, correct? I think the homebrew people will most likely fool with that and ignore trying to hack the actual firmware of the PS3, but perhaps I am wrong.

People LOVE Firmware updates on the PS3... but on the psp, they are hated, maybe one day homebrew experts will develop a custom firmware for the ps3, but I have to admit Sony is doing a good job w/ the PS3... whereas with the PSP, homebrew developers have done more for the psp, than Sony probably will ever do.

in that case the X360 is more like PSP because people are using their own firmware for the dvd drive. At one point there is this unhackeable drive but people find a way to flash it too.

QFT.

I was about to give up on the PS3 but now since the BC issue has been fixed, it has shined new light on it.

I'm guessing it'll be adopted slowly... but ultimately, it'll pick up.

Sorry but how the hell do you give up on a system when its been out for less then 3 months?

If you spent $600 on a system, you'd expect the system to yield some awesome results. I realize that launch games were not gonna be all-star, but I at least expected the ps3 to play ps2/ps1 games better than the Xbox360 played their xbox games. The PS3 is supposed to have a PS2/PS1 chip already implemented into the PS3 for perfect/near-perfect emulation.

Now that the BC issue has been fixed, I can dust off my PS3 and play my backlog until some next-gen killer apps come out.

same here... now that ps2 / ps1 emulation has been fixed, i might actually consider trading in my ps2.

snes9x is already running on Linux, but far from being optimized. Agreed that people are going to focus more on Linux than the actual PS3.

However, a PS2/1 region hack for the PS3 would be awesome.

Oh yea, add to that the ability to play copies. Then were talking major pts for PS3 8-)
