Sony doubles cost of PlayStation
Peter Alford, Tokyo correspondent
January 27, 2007
PLAYSTATION fanatics, stand by to be milked: Sony expects you to hand over $1000 for its new console, more than 50 per cent more than Japanese gamers are paying.
If it is any consolation, you'll get 5c change when, from March23, Sony Computer Entertainment's long-awaited 60-gigabyte PlayStation 3 goes on sale in Australia, Europe and New Zealand.
Anyone hoping to save a few dollars on Sony's lower-spec 20Gb model had better hunker down for an even longer wait, because a Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman would only say yesterday that it would start arriving "later this year, depending on demand".

I can't imagine having to pay that much money. Do you know how many sheep you'd have to shear to get that kind of dough?

I don't know what they are talking about with those numbers but its NO where near $900. 94,095 yen equals about $774 US dollars which is what the reported price has been.

The system is AU$999.95, it is NOT in US dollars. Whoever wrote that article needs to pull their head out of their ass.

Also its about a 58% increase nowhere near a 100% increase. When they can't even do basic math they tend to lose any shred of credibility. Before people scream foul over the price thats about standard increase for Austrailian market. The Wii is marked up the exact same percentage in Austrailia. $399 instead of $250.

It's from the Simpsons, I think.

Converting, it's roughly USD $769.

The Wii is about USD $309.

Yeah i'm not sure if the $399 price tag is in US or AU dollars. They need to learn that Austrailian dollars = AU$x.xxx

If the $399 IS in AU dollars then the PS3 has a bit more of a markup. Talk about a poorly written article though, someon needs to smack that writer upside the head with a kangaroo.

WTF. I saw "50 per cent more than Japanese gamers are paying", meaning that if Japanese are paying US$600 then Australians are paying US$900.

And I always thought Americans had the worst math skills in the industrialized world.

Actually japaneese aren't paying $600. If you convert the Y59,980 to US dollars you get around $500ish. 50% more then that is $750 which is roughly what the Australians will have to pay.
