I have tried this and confirmed it does indeed work. I picked up a USB to PS2 port adapter at Radio Shack for $12 (It looks a lot better than the blue one pictured in the article because it is plain black and has a short cable). In the case of the Harmony Remote you will have to have a PS2 remote for it to learn the commands or you can download the commands of the PS2 remote and rename a device "Playstation 3". Here is the deal- Not many commands work on the XMB interface but most can work while watching the movie (play, pause, fast forward, ect). When you boot up the PS3, immediately insert your movie. It will boot up and you have to press "X" to log in as your profile. It will immediately go to the XMB movie section with your disc highlighted. All you have to do is press "X" to play it. The only real thing you are lacking is the ability to turn on the PS3 with the remote but since you had to get off your ass to put the movie in anyway its not such a big deal to turn the machine on is it? Cheapy I hope you didn't buy that PS3 remote yet! There has been a little bit of talk about this on the PS3 blu-ray remote thread but after I got this to work I thought it needed its own thread so like true cheapasses we can all save $30. Also does anyone know a cheap place to buy a usb infared reciever that just plugs into the usb and sits there like a jump drive? I think this would be the best way to go if you don't want to deal with the usb adapter and the PS2 infared reciever.

Let's see....adapter is about $12, remote is $25. I know it's nice to use your Harmony remote, but if it lacks powering on, that just sucks.

I know for my setup as it stands now, I'll eventually just get a Bluetooth remote, as my PS3 is on my secondary TV.

The adapter serves a dual purpose for me. I also needed it to be able to use my Street Fighter Anniversary stick on my PC so I can play some MAME games with it.

I've often wondered if you couldn't somehow use an USB Infrared adapter like a PC or notebook uses for wireless communication on the PS3? I'm sure it wouldn't work for some reason, but it'd be nice if it did.

This doesn't work for those of us who have the fat ps2 w/ pro scan or the skinny ps2, since those have built in IR receivers and the remotes didnt come with any.
