The CAGcast is my one joy on the commute to and from class during the week. Having said that, I am only 48 minutes into the CAGcast and will likely save the rest until tomorrow, so the comments below only apply to the first 48 minutes:

First, I would like to talk about the hypothetical release of PS3 over Christmas 2007. In regards to this issue I am going to have to agree with Wombat 100%. A 2007 release of the PS3 would have been much too late; rather, Sony should have taken a cue from Mircrosoft and released the PS3 with a DVD drive and saved the Blu-Ray for an add-on.

It has become apparent to me that the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 was a purely selfish attempt by Sony to trojan horse their next-gen movie format of choice into the living room. Currently, Blu-Ray shows little benefit for games and a passel of drawbacks. Chief among these being high initial prices, low initial stocks (although this seems to be a problem of antiquity already), decreased prospects of early price drops, and poor loading times on games (just research Bethesda's problems porting Oblivion to the system). Now, had Sony decided to use a DVD player, price points would be lower, demand would rise, production numbers would easily have increased, and competitive pricing strategies would be a viable option in 2007.

Now, had Sony decided to release the PS3 over Christmas 2007, I think the system would be even more poorly received than it is now. As things stand, Sony is already saying there will be no price cuts on the PS3 through 2007. If the PS3 were to be released in 2007 at the current price point I think the system would be a disaster. Xbox 360 and Wii would already have a DOMINANT market share and the PS3 would be launching alongside Halo 3. Sure, the online service and launch games for the PS3 could potentially be more polished, but most of the improvements to services and games don't happen until the services and games are being used by the public. You can only make so many improvements in a theoretical realm before you max out and must turn to realworld experience to see what needs polishing. Developers being hands-on with other developer's games is integral to creating better software; developers don't sit in a room trying to come up with more and more brilliant ideas until they create a perfect game, they borrow from the collective wisdom of the community. Without a console on the market this is nearly impossible. With only "launch-caliber" titles availble, a much higher price point, and a market already comfortable with two alternative consoles, the PS3 would be entering hostile waters indeed.

I have to go pick up the wife from work and run some errands, but I will continue this later...

P.S. I should win Phoenix Wright because the first game basically inspired me to apply to law school. Now that I'm paying $40,000 a year in tuition and realizing that the actual legal system lacks much of the luster of Phoenix's world, I think that I deserve at least a $30 game to help get me through.

Wow, a little early this week, but still welcome. Just as I would certainly welcome a brand, S&M-spanking new copy of Phoenix Wright 2...pretty please with sugar or some stomach-churning sugar substitute like splenda on top? ;)

Nice video. I'm glad I'm not the only one to buy useless toy crap once in a while. :)

God of War 2 is a PS2 game because a lot of the content was created for the original and didn't make it into the game. Plus, it can be enjoyed by PS2 and PS3 owners alike, especially with the BC fix. Where's the bad part about this?

The PS3 couldn't be delayed to next year, that option wasn't available to Sony at all. Being down 10+ million or so in sales to MS and Nintendo by coming out a year or two later makes their chances to do remotely well slim to none. The risk is easily worth the reward for them, as they are more active with the firmware updates, which allows them to fix problems, add new features, and add whatever else they have planned for the PS3. The games will come, but hardware needs to be there first.

Also, Microsoft didn't make their 10 million units sold goal, they might have shipped that many to stores, but they fell short of 10 million units sold. They said at E3 that they'll have a "10 million unit head start (http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/7/d/37d1985b-06dc-48f3-a342-961972f55319/E32006BriefingPR.FINAL.doc)(doc file)," but only managed to ship (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12309) 10.4 million at the end of the year.

You guys should bring back the hypewagon, it's something I noticed that you guys haven't brought up for awhile. It seemed like Wombat was creeped out at the end when Cheapy was talking about shower sex, like he wanted Cheapy to move on ASAP.

I'll try for Killzone again.

great show guys, i disagree with you cheapy on the ps3 about them waiting, that would leave microsoft with 2 full years without competetion basically. I know the launch was kinda rushed but sony had to get systems out there on the market.

btw psp and ds are equal to me but i want phoenix wright 2 lol

I was listening to the podcast today while cleaning up around the house, and when Wombat started comparing Wii downloads to a Xbox version of the same game. It’s like a spontaneous root filling.

Playing original 8 bit and 16 bit games on an Xbox totally destroys the game. Anyone deep into retro gaming should know this, and let me tell you why:
Xbox does not show “True” low resolution. SNES games play in 256x224 (8:7) and Genesis (or Megadrive as it was known over here) run at 320x240. Xbox cannot output these resolutions and shows everything at a crappy 480i. 480i is a bad resolution since it’s the wrong scale with NES and SNES games, and upscaling low res it always a bad idea unless you do a 4x upscale as you want the scan lines to measure up correctly, so the Xbox version of this game is far from optimal.

We also know that the soundchip that was in all the old games does not emulate well on modern day consoles, and will often sound hallow or just plain wrong. The Wii? Perfected emulation for all Nintendo games, near perfection for Sega Games.

Now an easy retort would be: But why don’t you just buy the game on a Genesis and hock that up to your tv? Well, these old consoles don’t have a good solution for plugging it into your tv, the signal is.. sub par at best. The Wii is the solution for this.

For true-retro nerds, the Wii is the Blue Ray of Retroness, and telling me that the same game exists on the Xbox for less money, is like telling me I can get my Blue Ray movies on VHS for less money.

It’s good that wombat comments more and has more opinions, all in all the show is getting better every time I listen in, but this one opinion just shows ignorance for retro gaming.

I want to say something witty, but I'm too tired and too sick to be clever. Instead I will offer this, your points are all valid but for the average gamer the noticibility (I think I made that word up) of the difference would be minimal. Also I would say DVD to Blue Ray might a be a more accurate comparison and for the record I say yes save your money and DVD's over Blue Ray. I stand by my comments that there absolutely no reason to ever buy a 10+ year old game for 8 dollars, especially when you can serviceable versions of the same game for far less. So stick that in your pipe buddy, ;)

In reference to the movie downloads on the 360 you dont have to wait for the whole thing to download before you can watch it, when I rent them usually in about 5 minues I can start playing the movie and it never hiccups at all.

Nice show fellas. I agree that Sonywould have been better off making GoW 2 a PS3 game. Resistance is the only reason, IMO, to own a PS3 right now. GoW with PS3 graphics and the ability to download content via the PSN would have been sweet!

damn you wombat if you jinx God of War coming out on time for the ps2 ill stomp the living turkey jerk outta ya. the reason why sony is focusing on making the game for the ps2 only is like cheapy said theres more money in keeping it on the ps2 than on the ps3. and im glad theyre not looking to do the douchebag thing like nintendo did in delaying a flagship game just to push their new system sales up. not to mention if they did put it on the ps3 then what? do you think peopel would really shell out a grip load of cash to buy a ps3 and god of war 2 on the ps3 just to play next gen God of war 2? hell no.

the only reason people bought twilight princess for the wii was because nintendo purposely pushed the game back to pressure gamers into breaking down and getting a wii and twilight princess for wii because many peopel didnt want to wait any longer for the GC version and still thought it was goign to get cancelled. in hindsight i bet many of the had wished theyd have been patient and waited because there werent any real benifits or advantages in the wii verrsion of TP over the GC version that made it a must buy game.

im sure sony has thought about it what company wouldnt but after seeing how much nintendo tainted and pissed off alot of their loyal fanbase dicking people over with that whole TP debacle ( with constant delays and lies) sony knows theyd be better served keeping the game on the ps2 because in the systems dying days its still selling huge not only system sales ( since its still a solid system with tons of great original games) but the games are becoming cheaper too and many people who arent interested in any of the next gen consoles at their ridiculous prices would rather shell out 150 bucks or less for a new ps2 and have access to hundreds of great games in its catalog of games than spend 600 on a ps3, 300 on a wii or 4 something for an 360 to play what about 10 or so good 360 games, 1 good ps3 game and maybe 2 or 3( and im being very generous here ) wii games.

God of War 2 will sell big numbers and many people who are fans of the series would sell out full price to get the game asap i know I will . theyve got plenty of time now to get God of War 3 ready for when the ps3 drops in price and then itd be a good thing but to try and make a sloppy seconds upgraded version of God of War 2 like nintendo did with TP on the wii is sickening. and its cool to see sony has too much love for quality game making to pull a dickhead move like that. not to mention theres not as much money to be made in doing that now. true they could release an remix version for the ps3 later but for now its better as a ps2 exclusive.

and even further though those people who are buying ps2 now because theyre waiting for next gen price drops will be awed by God of War and God of war 2 and many of sonys other great games and could easily be swayed to getting a ps3 over any fo the other systems once they see how great sony gaming really can be.

First and foremost Thank You Cheepy and Wombat for choosing me this week. Awesome.

Good CAGcast. Lasted me a whole train ride and then some. Few things.

Retro Gaming...
Absolutely agree with Wombat as to "old game" downloads for the current generation systems. Look folks... If you like it and you want to buy it then go ahead and buy it but be a smart purchaser. Modern Retro Gaming Emulation(I'm trying to come up with a term that covers this with out using a singular catch phrase or corporate label) should not be limited to uber-perfect emulation and to top it off, the MRGEs are less then perfect even from the manufacturer themselves. With the authentic disks/tapes being scarce and hard to find, I personally think compilations like that of "Sonic Gems Collection" is just fine for the average gamer looking for a retro bargain.

PS3...

I think the launch of the Wii and X360 were rushed. If the X360 was delayed to better hardware (stability, quietness, etc...), there would be even more incentive to purchase it. The first year for the X360 was a trial by fire where it was luck enough to be the only next-gen console but not so lucky to have a so-so 6 months. If the X360 had launched with the PS3 and Wii, the X360 would be the clear winner with a huge launch line up littered with AAA titles, better hardware, and better distribution. The PS3 launch was pretty successful for a 500-600 dollar blu-ray player. Like it or not everything will do everything; MP3 players will do more than play MP3 and TVs will do more than be "channel changers".

P.S. PSP rules, wombat. I will buy Phenix Wright 2, but I feel pressured to do so. I think its a crime that they would cancel a sequel of a PORT because of sales.

Bazz
01-31-2007, 11:35 AM
I totally agree with Cheapy about the Ps3. They rushed that system way to much and they thought just because it had the Sony Playstation name it will be the best thing ever , but it takes more then that to prove especially when your system is $600.00 and people don't even care about a Blu-Ray Player.

God Of War 2 works for me on Ps2 , saves me money being I really would want to play that game , but I don't know if I would want to pay $600.00 to play it on a ps3. Although if they did release it as a Ps3 game would bring more intrest towards it.

Just to clarify, the Sony guys who made the prizes I provided possible are ACUTELY aware that these games are now up for grabs as contest prizes. I know they aren't looking for recognition. In fact, they are probably thankful I didn't eBay them (which would have been a dickhead move anyway). Just know that the rank in file (I think that is the term I am looking for) at Sony are definitely fans of the show, even if they cannot "come out of the closet."

:D

@Wombat - Bottom line, God of War IS NOT a PS3 system seller. At this point, only Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid are system sellers. God of War will sell better on the PS2.

But I won't do that since I'd like one of those Phoenix Wright games.

WEll the PS3 didn't have the titles for it at launch, but launching another year later with the Wii and 360 out there carving out huge leads wouldn't have been good either.

I think ultimately BluRay will save the PS3. Movies are way more mainstream and as hi-def movies become more common place and console prices drop the mainstream consumer will pick up a PS3 as a cheap BR player.

You could say digital downloads would nip any chance BR has, but 99% of consumers don't have the bandwidth to download hd movies in a timely fashion. Also consumers are creatures of habit and it's going to be a long hard sell to get them to stop renting movies at Blockbuster and what not.

So I think BR ultimately is a success that sells the PS3.

Also let's not forget the PS3 has some big titles coming out for it.

And the PS3 in 2k6 actually outsold the 360 in 2k5.

I really like Wombat's idea about a sonic burnout-esque game. It would allow Sega to final capture the sense of speed, it has been missing in those shitty resent sonic games.

DS over PSP anyday. At one point in time I owned move but the lack of quality PSP games, at the time, caused me to sell it. Phoenix Wright is great a game.

Seems like the last few weeks have been pretty barren with regard to games for the PS3 and the Wii. As for Sony launching the PS3 a year later or w/o Blu-Ray, I think it would have been suicide unless they managed to launch with FFXIII and MGS4 amd brought the price down a hundred bones. The 360 has a ton of momentum right now and by Xmas 2007 MS might have been able to drop the price to counter Sony.

Put me down for Phoenix Wright 2.

Another entertaining 80 minutes that made me a happy cag. I feel like cheapy should have a segment where he says a certain thing he misses about the usa ie weed or axe body spray. I am always happy to hear simpsons references on the show, memories of arcades back in the day, and other random things such as cheapy getting a hand job, cheapy getting laid and mrs wombat walking in the room naked. Dr. Wombat, graduate of Hollywood Upstairs Medical College, should perform vasectomies via trauma center for those dumb enough to get those certain virtual console games that make him an angry wombat.

I would like to try to “TAKE THAT” ===> Phoenix Wright 2

on a side note thanks for the shoe pics last week cheapy. I used to be really into sneakers before i found cag and now thats where my time is spent.

I also agree with Wombat regarding the Sonic Gems Collection (even though he mean Sonic Collection Plus). Just does not make much sense UNLESSSSSS you don't have any system that game was on. Also the Genesis Collection that just came out for PS2 would also support his opinion on this issue.

I'll expose myself to some heckling and admit I've downloaded some Virtual Console games. AFAIK, R-Type 3 hasn't been re-released anywhere, and it's been well worth the $8. I never had a TG-16, and the shmups available (R-Type, Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier) are quite fun. Gunstar Heroes is a similar case - I don't believe it was ever collected, short of the Genesis "Treasure Box." A cleaned-up Mario 64 in 480p is nice if you never played the original.

Phoenix Wright 2

CheappyD I must disagree with u in regards of the ps3 launch, they shouldn't have launched in the 2007 christmas period, their mistake was delaying the launch of the system because of the blue ray diodes ( that's what they say, but I believe it was because they didn't have the specs finalized for the system).Think about it.They delayed the launch, and they have relied so much in the HD stuff, that must gamers still can't afford a HD tv, I am getting one but like this christmas, but that's it...blue ray still is not an option, as hd-dvd still not an option.

Great show once again guys. I always look forward to a new CAGcast.

Re: PS3 launch should've been 2007. I agree, unfortunately they just couldn't afford to be last. Their hand was forced. 360 already made major headway in the US (arguably the largest of the three big markets right now) and sitting out another Christmas would handed Microsoft an even bigger lead -- and yes, that's even with PS3s being in short supply and it being more of a "token" launch anyway. It also would've pissed off third-party publishers who count on holiday software sales and had projects in the pipeline for PS3 all year. Already Sony has lost some key exclusives -- they can't afford to lose more.

Second thing forcing their hand is Nintendo. While Sony America might not consider them much competition, in Japan it's a different story. Sony already lowered the price of PS3 there in order to better compete with the lower-priced Wii. Had Nintendo not been ready with Wii Sony might've had some room to delay.

Now their obstacle is the PR battle with Nintendo and Microsoft. They need to nail down a Q1/Q2 lineup, talk software, talk up the advantages of the PlayStation Network and get some more positive buzz going. They need a community figurehead a la Major Nelson or Reggie to be there and at least put on the act that they're listening to fans. Right now they're coming off a string of so much bad press that it is going to be difficult to get away from it. I think they're just hoping that Wii becomes a gimmick with no life in it and that the public embraces 1080p high-def gaming and Blu-Ray movies, but I dunno how quick that'll happen (if it does this year). They were hoping that the public was as hungry for Blu-Ray as they were for DVD when PS2 came out...and guess what? Not happening.

Anyway, great 'cast and thanks for the shout-out Cheapy and Wombat. :D Drop me an XBL friend request and I'll add y'all to my list and we'll play some Gears sometime (I am a very easy target, trust me).

Hey guys--great show.

Wombat this is for you. Here's why you need to give me one of those copies of Phoenix Wright: And Justice for All. I'm like you in that I am changing jobs this year. Unlike you I have to move about 2,700 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee to just outside Seattle, Washington in a couple of weeks. I'm going to be taking a moving truck on an epic journey across the country and I'm going to need something to occupy my time when my wife is driving. Even after the CAG-worthy coupon codes I found for Penske, and after saving money on boxes by hitting up my buddies at the neighborhood liquor store, the moving truck alone is going to cost a MINT. I'm sure you have moved around in the past--and you know there's always the possibility that I will need to lay in the bed with an ailing back. Phoenix Wright would make hours of pain seem more bearable.

Just the gas for the truck (6-10 miles/gallon!) is going to cost more than $700. The move is going to cost me about 3 grand total.

Help a CAG out, will ya?

That's my entry for the contest. PM me if you need verification of employment. :)

Wombats discussion about sonic got me thinking. They really should just make a 2-d sonic game. Because all the consoles have an ability to download games it should be a downloadable game for something like $15. If it had the same great level design as the sonic games on the Genisis it would be a must buy for me. Its ridiculous how these classic franchises are being ruined by these new guys. The only problem would be with the 360 because as anyone who's touched the controller knows the d-pad is absolute shit. any who if you could throw a copy of killzone liberation my way that would be great. Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing as I was listening to the CAGcast: the PS3 should've launched back in the spring of 2006 instead of the fall. Even if they didn't go with the worldwide simultaneous launch (window), at least dev kits would've been released sooner and the price would've been cheaper as Sony wouldn't have had to shoehorn Blu-ray in to their system before the standards were set (and the diodes held up because of production issues). They could've still included HDMI ports and added Blu-ray movie and/or game capability later on either as an add-on or as an upgraded "premium" system/SKU that would've justified the price difference. A token launch nearly a year ago would've at least given Sony six months to catch up to Microsoft's UI (mainly through firmware updates) and get a "massive" leg up on the late-arriving Wii. Releasing the system earlier would've also handed developers the specs to the Sixaxis and some semblance of a network framework for online games in time for the second-gen releases that could've really utilized them by the holiday shopping season of '06. Releasing all this for a price comparable to that of the 360 would have just been icing on the cake.

At any rate, HarassmentPanda's initial comments near the beginning of this thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2623834&postcount=3) covered most of the reasons why a late release wouldn't have done any good, so I won't repeat what he had to say here. For the record, I own both an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii. The PS3 will have to wait for a price drop and some more games; Blu-ray just doesn't cut it for me.

I agree, more 2D Sonic. I don't get why companies feel the need to force everything into 3D, especially when it means the game turns to crap. More 2D Mario while we're at it, too, not that the 3D games haven't been good, but 2D games are still fun.

I think the point about delaying the launch of the PS3 isn't bad. Had they waited a year I'd imagine they could have gotten out at a lower price point. And they could have had many more units available at launch. And a decent lineup of games. And not having to compete with the Wii's launch. However, Sony is overly arrogant and believes that people will buy their stuff regardless of how much it costs and they don't think Nintendo is even their competition so got what they deserve with the PS3 launch in my opinion.

Oh yeah, and Phoenix Wright 2. Since I'm not the one getting handjobs in the shower I need something to entertain myself.

Case of NDS vs PSP

Phoenix Wright: "Objection!! Your Honor, the defendant's PSP battery died after hours of load screens therefore he used the UMDs to kill his friend who brought him the PSP for his birthday instead of what he really wanted which is a shiny Nintendo DS with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All."

Judge: Gulity!! Defendant is sentenced to a life of Nintendo DS gaming glory. As for the PSP toss it into the growing PSP disappointment bin.

Justice is served. Signing off for Gaming Court.

Nice show, good stuff all around. Except when Cheapy talked about the HJ in the shower...it shouldn't be gross by any means but it is. :/ I don't know how else to explain it.

The reason why I'd like to have Phoenix Wright 2 is because I played the first one, and loved it, however I have fallen on kind of hard times and I don't think I'll be able to purchase the second one when it comes out. :( Also, I wouldn't like the series to not sell well, and me having a copy, assuming it's wonderful, will spread good word-of-mouth to my friends and such.

Regarding PS3 launching in 2007... While many in the gaming community think that the PS3 has launched not with a bang but with a whimper, it has lit a fire under the ass of the BD v. HD DVD format war. Where before PS3 launch the HD DVD was selling more titles then Blu-ray, after November there was a huge surge of BD titles sold soaring over the competition.

Wombat and others can argue the relevance of adding the BD player to the system (increasing the price of the unit dramatically) but how would the PS3 distinguish itself otherwise? Right now (just 3 months after launch) you're not going to see the benefit of having 25-50Gigs of disc space, within a short time I believe that it's defnitely going to be a bigger and bigger issue further down the road. The Xbox 360's disc can only hold 7 Gigs of game data and already there are games that push the format to the disc limit.

The problem Sony has right now isn't really the price. The always forgoten 20Gig system is $500. Take two years of Xbox live that you've already paid for on the 360's life span and add that to the $400 price point and you're already at equal footing. The problem is, as always, THE GAMES. There aren't any, and until Sony blindsides us with an assload of titles that people want to buy, the PS3 will be seen as this cursed object which maybe well built but doesn't give you much to do with.

Contrary to popular belief it's not all bad news for Sony. They have sold well (better then the 360 last year comparitvely) and continue to do so. Blu-ray is slowly gaining ground and the system's FW continues to improve. Hopefully soon this year the system will become a real contender in this generation.

This is coming from someone who doesn't own a PS3 and only a 360. I look forward to the day that the system is worth a purchase because who doesn't want kick ass games?

re: 3D Sonic games, I really think a Burnout-style game would be an awful idea. Playing through the original on Wii (yeah, I was one of the suckers that bought it and then realised it was on a GCN disc) really made me realise how much Sonic really isn't about speed at all. It's about the illusion of speed, and forcing you to use restraint in it. Sonic, mainly, is about frustration - speeding down a runway into a bank of spikes being the prime example. In the 2D games this is executed very well - when you are able to get a burst of speed, usually at the end of a level, or if you're able to navigate the obstacles well enough to keep your speed going, there's tremendous satisfaction. That's the essential thing that the 3D games have been missing - there's too much freedom.

Uh, also, Phoenix Wright sounds good. I'm not going to be buying it - the first one was enough for me, really - but I wouldn't say no to a mooched copy. :)

Phoenix Wright 2, I love the first one and just got layed off from my job. Please give me the game. Great show guys thanks a lot.

ArthurDigbySellers

I agree with Wombat that some of the VC titles are redundant in that you can buy them on a collectors edition, but that only goes for Sega games at this point. There are no Nintendo compilation discs you can buy, and no TG-16 compilation discs either (AFAIK). So if I want to play Bonk's Adventure or Super Mario 64, I have to purchase a used console and find the game as well.

I never owned a TG-16 or a Nintendo 64 so those games are very enticing to me and a lot of other gamers who are in the same boat. I don't want to have to hunt down retro consoles and games just to have them handy in case I want a quick game. I like that I can boot up my Wii, switch to the SM64 channel and play.

So those games might not be worth $10 to you, but for the ease of being able to play classic games that I missed, it is worth it for me. A Mario Kart 64 cartridge alone goes for more than $10. I think as long as you are smart about what games you are downloading, the VC is a great addition to the Wii. The 3 VC titles that I have downloaded so far cannot be purchased through any kind of compliation in the US.

trip1eX
02-01-2007, 11:28 AM
Yeah a big plus of the VC is convenience. I'm sure those guys in suits know this too.

Look at your local convenience store or your pop machine. Get a can for $.75.

IF you go the grocery store you can get a 12-pack of pop for $3 or $4.

Yet you still buy that can of pop for $.75 or even a $1 because it's convenient.

I agree that the launch of the PS3 has helped Blu Ray, but is it really a good thing when people are using your game system mostly to watch movies. Plus, Blu Ray has gained an edge on HD-DVD, but it's not really making a huge dent in the world overall.
I don't agree that the PS3 should have waited to launch, though I wish Sony had been more concerned with games than the Blu Ray/HD-DVD war. However, I think financially it's smart to keep God of War 2 on the PS2, though I also raised the question at one point whether it'd be a good idea to move it to the PS3. However, I don't think it's fair to credit Nintendo for putting Zelda on the Wii because it's the same game as the Gamecube version for the most part, and also the delay of the game by Nintendo showed little regard for the people who bought the Gamecube. And I'm not talking about the month delay between the two releases, I'm talking about the delay of several months that clearly was a result of the Wii launch.
I own and definitely enjoy all three systems, but I have to say the only one of the three that didn't underwhelm at launch was the 360. Outside of the awful failure rate of the system (which is a major problem), it has delivered more on its promises than the other two systems.
The PS3 fell way short of those "target" videos from E3 2005 and made the mistake of not delivering any titles at launch that helped drive the PS2, whether it's Gran Turismo or Ratchet and Clank or all the big third-party games, which is something largely beyond Sony's control.
The Wii has no online gaming right now, a horrible infrastructure for online games in the future, and apologists for the system's graphics probably won't be apologizing in a year or so when the novelty of the control scheme has worn off. And while I really enjoy the system, I wonder how well anything not Nintendo will sell on it. I also question whether the Wii is a system designed to sell software. A large chunk of its owners will be happy to play Wii Sports and similar games. Plus, the system's lineup over the next six to eight months is pathetic, with games like Mario, Smash Brothers and Metroid probably a lot longer off than their current release dates.
I always thought that Microsoft should be ready with Halo 3 and a $100 price drop when the PS3 launched. Well, neither were necessary. But if Microsoft has both hammers ready next fall, I don't see how Nintendo or Sony will be able to compete. Nintendo has a tendency to release its big games at odd times (though I actually appreciate big games in the spring and summer), partly because they sell no matter what. And I don't see Sony having any killer app to compete with Halo 3, though as an owner of the system I hope some stuff is on the horizon that will wow me.

You guys seem to get really bored of each other, which makes for a very tedious podcast.

I have two suggestions:

1. Shorten the Podcast. Make the scripts a half an hour. Of course, if you're on a good conversation no reason to cut it short, you could go on for an hour if you liked, but you guys should feel free to end it after half an hour.

Maybe you could do two podcasts a week if you think people will be dissapointed in shortening the episodes.

2. Consider getting another host. Alot of the time one host will have nothing to contribute to the conversation, while the other host is pulling the weight, if you got a third host, this would happen less often, and you'd have more chances of someone bringing up something usefull, entertaining, or informative.

Oh, and Cheapy... I just noticed you look like a Japanese Animé character. You don't look Japanese, but you look like some Animé thing.

Also: Sonic reminded me of Burnout. Just not fun. I think Wombat's suggestions on how to make a sonic game were stupid, and it's a good thing he's not working for SEGA (no offence, Wombat, you know I love you.)

Also: I want a copy of Phoenix Wright!

I have to admit I never played Phoenix Wright and i only have heard about it through several times being mentioned in the CAGcasts but i would like to play it. As Wombat would say, Objection!

Still listening to the CAGcast, this weeks intro theme is tite, is this a CheapyD mix?

Last mix i remember being posted was ass n tetris which was good, hopefully this new mix heard in the cagcast will be available too. I think a new mix each week would be nice if it ain't much trouble.

My takes on the whole PS3 deal.

First, I think Sony was too high in the clouds with the entire Blu-Ray thing. Is blu-ray really nessisary? Maybe, maybe not. Do we really need 25gigs (or whatever the size is) for gaming at this current stage? Perhaps not.

That is, unless Sony is going to bring vanguard to the PS3. It weighs in on a computer HD at a whopping 20some gigs.

Also, I cant remember where I heard this from but both the 360 and the PS3 have only 512 main system memory to cope with. I dunno all the other specs like if its shared or not, but with that little memory, it would be rather hard trying to load super high end quality stuff in to either memory. The fact that the GoW is slow paced makes it far easier to pre-stream stuff off a DVD makes it far easier to do than fast action games. Even if the 360 had HD-DVD built in, it would most likely arrive to a similar problem, having a game take up a corner of space on a High def content media or running into issues trying to load a lot of super high def without slideshowing.
So, pretty much id agree with Wombat. Blu-ray as an optional media drive to the PS3 would the PS3 a very good deal against the 360.

Also, I think Sony is advertising the system a bit wrong, much like the PSP. (I think this came up in both this podcast and previous podcasts). Its being touted as a media player that plays games, where the PS2 was the other way around: A game center that also played DVDs. I also think that the floating PS3 commercials are rather cool, but they dont deliver much on what it is. An average joe would have no clue on what the PS3 is supposed to do. So, to me personally, there is more interest in getting a PS3 for movies than for gaming. It is cheaper than the cheapest Blu-Ray player.

Also, some interview in Game Informer with some designer guy brings up an interesting minor point with the PS3, the odd shape akes it look impressive but not as easy to accomidate to a current media system a person might have set up.

As for virtual Console... I think if they reduced the price by 200 wii Points id think the worth of buying is much nicer. Or maybe a montly rental cost like Gametap, where I can play most of thoe games for $10 plus some :D

Oh, since my PSP is lying around doing nothing for the past few months, i go for killzone! Rar

My take on the PS3 situation is this, I believe that Sony wanted and should have released the PS3 in late 2007 but couldn't because:

A) They already delayed it once back in spring of '06 and didn't want to be called liars twice and face a PR nightmare

And

B) The decision to add Blue-ray meant they HAD to release it now in order to compete with HD-DVD.

Bottom line I feel this was about the bottom line. They made a business decision to release now based an questionable past judgment calls and were stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place.

Phoenix Wright 1 FTW!

So, I bought my wife (a casual gamer at best) a Nintendo DS for Christmas, along with Nintendogs and Animal Crossing. I've been doing what I can to draw her into this hobby as much as possible, for my own sake as well as hers.

We'd never just up and buy Phoenix Wright, but I think she might enjoy it, and if she does I'd pick up the first game for her too! (I'd also talk it up to my attached friends in similar situations.) So, I think you should send me that game, mostly for her...

Great podcast, guys. I must say that I've got to agree with Wombat about GOW 2. As much as I've enjoyed the PS2, the PS3 library currently needs AAA content not only to justify its $499/$599 price tag, but to boost lagging console sales as well. I also find it very difficult to play previous gen games. As much as I want to play Psychonauts, Okami, FF12, GOW2 and Rogue Galaxy, I can't find the motivation especially since I got a new HDTV. Can anyone relate?

No one would drive 2 hours to the video store? I know. I also know that it generally doesn't exactly require a lot of meticulous "planning" to download and watch a film. It's planning to watch a movie, not planning an invasion of Canada.

Besides that...

I know that you can start watching the movie before it's done downloading, and it'll finish while you are watching. Having to wait a half hour or an hour or whatever isn't really a hassle, and it beats having to get up and go somewhere. Yes, sometimes the downloads are slow, but this can often be circumvented by rebooting your console and reconnecting.

I know that going to the video store, whether it's 2 minutes or 2 hours away requires fuel, leaving the house, and worrying about returing it on time.

I know that once it's downloaded, you have two weeks to watch it before it expires. If you're insisting on "planning" your movie viewing experience, download it way ahead of time, then consult your datebook in your carefully arranged office drawer, then pick up your pen from your meticulously arranged-in-order-of-size desk set, and choose what optimal time and date would best work for you and enhance your movie viewing experience. "Oh, I'd want to watch that on Saturday, I'll download it now so I have it ready! Then I will go into my closet, pick out my clothes which are arranged according to color first and date of purchase second, and then leave to attend the orginizational skills seminar!"

And if you can't find the time within two weeks to watch it, you didn't want to see it in the first place.

Hardly a major hassle, and certainly not any WORSE than going to the video store.

Good show, as usual. One suggestion to Cheapy: I really think the chemistry during the shows would improve greatly if you were to at least try putting some effort into having an interest in what Wombat brings to the conversation. I mean, it seems pretty obvious that Wombat feels consistently ignored and shunned whenever he tries to interject something into the conversation, only to be shut down every time by an apathetic Cheapy.

Anyway, here is my blatant line of text hoping for a copy of Phoenix Wright. I *love* the first one.

[QUOTE=KaneRobot;2628691]No one would drive 2 hours to the video store?
QUOTE]

Yeah, this is not a very good comparison by Wombat. When you download a video (or even a game demo), you don't have to sit there and watch it download. You can go off and do something else (eat, sleep, watch tv, play a game) while the xbox and your internet connection do all the work. Driving to the video store (although arguably faster) requires me (and my car) to do all the work and that's time that could be better spent elsewhere.

My 360 can do alot of other things in addition to playing great games. And that's why I value it much more than any of my other systems (wii included). The more features and services they throw in, the better! I can choose to use them or not.

The problem with putting God of War 2 on the PS3 is that the conversion wouldn't have been as simple as upscaling the resolution. When they ported Twilight Princess from Gamecube to Wii, it wasn't as big of a deal because the Wii and Gamecube hardware are somewhat similar in their design therefore it consisted of just changing the controls. God of War 2 would have looked like garbage if they had just upscaled the resolution without touching the actual textures. Not only that but if they had decided to go all out with their conversion from a PS2 to a PS3 game it would have probably added 6-12 months of development time at a minimum and at that point the first God of War would have faded from gamer's memories to the point that they wouldn't have cared enough to buy a $500/$600 console to play it. That's kind of my take on it, I can't disagree that making God of War 2 a PS3 title would have helped their PS3 sales but it just wasn't practical for Sony.

As far as the contest goes, I'd like to win Killzone: Liberation.

MaxDense
02-01-2007, 08:17 PM
I agree with rattlemonster, the lack of good games for the PS3 is its biggest problem. So far mine is a $600 Resistance player. I've had my X360 since launch and I don't remember there ever being a drought of good games for the system as exists now for the PS3. I was thrilled to see Sony fix the BC problem, that was huge. I thought they were strangely low-key about it though.

I have Army of Darkness and King Kong on HD-DVD and The Ballad of Ricky Bobby on Blue-Ray but I don't plan on buying any more of either format. I have an upconverting DVD player and neither BR or HD-DVD look significantly better than an upconverted standard DVD to me. I'm with Wombat, I want my consoles to play great games.

SOCOM 2, please.

Gotta agree with Wombat. These downloadable "classics" are just ridiculously priced especially when you look at the bevy of compilation games that are out there. XBLA seriously needs to focus on new and unique stuff to keep it going strong. It looks like their heading in the right direction with games like Castle Crashers and Worms HD and Catan, but seriously those ten dollar and even five dollar classics are pissing me off to no end.

OBJECTION! This piece of evidence clearly contradicts the other posts. Phoenix Wright 2 should be mine.

I agree with Wombat on the Sonic idea. Sega has always talked about Sonic's speed but what they didn't understand is that it's hard to control something fast and have the player jump from platform to platform, attack enemies, collect rings in 3d. I haven't tried any of the newer ones but I think they all use the analog stick to make Sonic run. That's a problem.

I posted in Sega's forum that they need to change the controls, possibly implementing a racing car style of control. The analog stick would only change the direction and you need to press a face button to make Sonic run, let it go and he starts to slow down. That way you can slow down and actually use the analog stick to move with more precision.

Hopefully the Sonic game for the Wii (it's suppose to feel more like a rail shooter) is a move in the right direction.

The PS3 would have tanked if it was released in 2007. By then MS could drop the price of the 360 and it's game library would be too big for Sony and it's launch titles. And it would go up against Halo 3.

And Killzone for the PSP FTW! The demo rocked. Konami should use it as a foundation for future 3d contra games.

Someone mentioned I may have posted in the wrong forum, but heres my lame attempt at winning a copy of Phoenix Wright:

I want a copy of Phoenix Wright 2 because I believe the game holds evidence that proves Phoenix Wright is my father :) Will you really deny a man his heritage? I really hope you will do the Wright thing and give me one of the copies.

Reason 2: I have bought just about every game you guys have positively reviewed. I donated money to the christmas charity, I also even joined and traded on sayswap, one of your ad partners. I shop occasionally using your links.

Reason 3: I donated 4 48hr live codes to fellow cags a whle back.

Reason 4: I own copies of Cubivore and Rez and love both of the games. I dig games with interesting gameplay mechanics.

Reason 5: I also cannot buy or find shoes anywhere for my big feet. I can sympathize with Cheapy. They dont make shoes for people with big wide feet. And I dont even live in Japan. New Balance rulez!

Lastly, I have turned so many people to your podcast.

I also hope they name the next game - Phoenix Wright: Kill 'Em All.

Phoenix Wright ! I'd love a copy.

I don't think Sony could wait. The reality is they need to win the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war.

HD-DVD would continue to pull ahead in sales since the Blu-Ray players are too expensive. They are using the PS3 as a trojan horse to get ahead.

Sony releasing God of War 2 for the PS2 has to be an enormous error on their part. That is probably the largest title besides Final Fantasy XIII for PS3 to be released this year.

I guess this just encourages people like myself to continue to play my PS2 and wait for the PS3 to drop in price.

Good Lord, it seems I'm due for castration.

I was sitting at home last night, listening to the CAGcast while playing my JUST THEN downloaded copy of Comix Zone, when Wombat piped up and told me how flat-out stupid I was to buy that game on the VC. I've proven myself so stupid that my right to procreate has been revoked. Apparently I can expect shadowy representatives of some Human Gene Pool Protection Agency to stop by and do a little snipping.

Oh, well. Such is life.

This is what I get for ignoring all the retro game collections over the years, but being sucked into the Wii vortex of craziness. It's a fun place to be, but apparently not the cheapest...

Even though it's proven me completely brain dead, Comix Zone is actually pretty darn cool. So at least I'll lose my yarbles for a pretty good game.

The discussion about sony delaying the ps3 is interesting, however I'd have think that the argument that things like the online would be further along and more games would be ready is incorrect. A system always has a slow-down after launch just like with the 360, and the wii has this problem as well. Also, the PSN wouldn't have demands made of it from the users until it is released. One thing that would have changed, would probably be stuff like thps8 having online MP. Oh well, I still enjoy it anyway.

Also, socom psp plz kthx.

Sony should have known better than to try to include blu-ray into its system.
Its what hurt its launch this time in price and time constraints.
They got greedy.
If the ps3 launched with an optional blu-ray player later (like the 360 did with HD-DVD) and 1 game like devil may cry, metal gear, FF, or just about ANY franchise from the ps2 - they would have had a [more] successful launch.
The greedy bastards were relying on their name in this release and found out people are not that loyal.
Hopefully the ps3 wont lose too many exclusives.
I know if I were a game developer right now, I'd be waiting for Sony to step it up in sales, before I release my game to a maximum of 1 million users.
Is it even possible to make a profit with those sorts of numbers?

Despite the many replies in this topic, it seems that we have only scratched the surface of the business argument in favor of keeping God of War and Yakuza on the PS2. Tell me, what do God of War, Yakuza, and Shenmue have in common? The answer: It's the initial cost of development.

(Granted one could easily make an argument involving the development costs of Shenmue and Yakuza, while God of War's development costs are a bit more of a mystery. But just looking at God of War could tell you that it didn't have a small development price tag.)

And what do you when development costs for the first game are high? Answer: You make a sequel using the same engine, with some minor, yet noticeable, enhancements. In nearly every console game development process, the majority of the costs will most likely go towards building the engine behind the game. Once you have the engine, you can churn out sequels at a lower cost using that engine. Numerous companies do this practice, even if the original game had low costs and high profits, but high costs can encourage this practice further.

(I'm thinking about Sega's past plans for Shenmue...)

There are two problems with moving God of War and Yakuza to the PS3:
1. The developers would have to deal with creating a new engine to suit the PS3's different architecture and capabilities.

2. (Mostly applies to God of War) When you have a successful franchise like God of War, which showed consumers what the PS2 was capable of graphically, expectations are much, much higher, and the pressure is much, much greater if the developers decide to release the sequel on a next-gen console. There is the potential of the franchise losing credibility if the next-gen sequel doesn't feel as revolutionary or important as the first. At least with the PS2 release, not only are you reaching a larger fan base, these fans will most likely have lower expectations, as the sequel will still be considered an impressive feat for the console.

(Phew! I was going to talk about something else, but I forget what it was...)

Hey I was wondering, do you know of any good gaming podcasts besides yours of course. I usually download your show and the Howard Stern Show listen to them on my cell phone while I am at work. Please don't recommend 1up's group of podcasts or Gamespot's because their podcasts crash my phone. BTW I would like to have Pheonix Wright: And Justice for All mainly because I have the first game and like it as well as my Nintendo DS Lite (after searching three different states to find one of course).

Well, this is embarrassing to admit, but this was the first CAGcast I've heard. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to listening to all future episodes.

Put me down for Phoenix Wright 2, please.

It may be too late to enter the contest - and if so, I Object! - but if I can I'll take a chance on Phoenix Wright 2.
