Here's what one of the guys who works at Volition had to say about it.
We're not developing it in-house, though why it doesn't say that on the press release is beyond me. We're doing testing on it, but that's it.
As to gameplay, it's basically the same. I think it's just going to be a straight port.

Saints Row is pretty awesome... though the port not being developed in-house is a bit worrisome. I hope PS3 owners get an awesome port because it is the best sandbox game to come out, well, ever.

That game was way too glitchy, have fun with it though

it was glitchy, but in a good way, if that makes sense. Glitches that made the game seem ridiculous, glitches that made you laugh.
I actually found the glitch where you stand on a car, press Y, and it teleports you INTO the car and ejects the driver miraculously very useful and also very funny. It's a great game, hope PS3 players get a good port.

You can save your stats and progress and whatnot anywhere, but when you start up again, you'll start in the safehouse closest to your savepoint.

This is a nice release, but I'd like to see some of the 360 extras thrown on the disc for free.

This game is excellent....I just started playing it again on the 360 (been busy with other games), but I'm having a GREAT time with it...only about 16% done, and still a great game. Side missions are fun...fnu game. I wonder how the PS3 will hold up.

One of the things about GTA that made me dislike it was that every time you failed a mission you had to drive all the way across the map to accept the mission again and then go all the way back to attempt it. Does this game fix that problem?

Yes.
There is a taxi service that takes you anywhere you want to go.
True Crime: NYC had that as well.
I haven't checked out Saints Row, but for some reason I doubt it's up to the level of excellence of any of the main 3D GTA's or even True Crime NYC, which kicked major ass as well.

Saint's Row engine and gameplay mechanics are actually the best of all the sandbox games, including the GTA series. GTA San Andreas has it beat in the ammount and variations of the missions, but not by a lot. GTA's atmosphere really outshines SR though.
All in all, SR is a fantastic game. Hopefully, the PS3's multiplayer component isn't suffered by terrible lag like the 360 version.

I can't go back to any GTA game after playing Saints Row... the GTA series feel archaic in design. Sure, San Andreas has more to do, but you miss all the helpful little things Saints Row put in the game.
I just went back to playing Vice City Stories recently and it's too painful to go back and play it.

The waypoints and trails on the minimap alone made SR much more enjoyable. I kept looking at Crackdown's mini, thinking I would see the route to my next destination up there :(

Why not just wait 3-4 months and buy GTA for ps3? Isnt the game coming out in October of this year?

Just like to add my two cents and say this is one of the good games coming out for the PS3. I have it for the 360 and it runs pretty well, and It's pretty enjoyable to boot. I even liked it better then GTA in most aspects, but of course as others said the enviroment is still better in GTA in most regards.

Saints Row is awful IMO. One of the worst GTA rip-offs I've seen. I've played the demo on my 360, but it simply doesn't compare.
Crackdown, on the other hand, is surprisingly fun. :)

I think Saints Row is a much better game than GTA. Soo many things that were annoying/broken in GTA Saints Row fixed. I love how if you failed a mission you had the option to retry it there on the spot. No coming back to life at a hospital with no guns and having to drive back to the mission. SR's hud is 100x better than GTA's.

I hope the PS3 gets a shity port, that will start to be payback for all the shity PS2 ports the Xbox and GC got.

meh, I know they improved some gameplay elements from GTA, but it was at the expense of many other details. GTA is actually funny where Saint's Row tries too hard. GTA's presentation, style and atmosphere obviously had a lot of work put into it--they thoroughly research the period the game is based on and capture the feel of pop culture at the time. Saint's Row is as generic as can possibly be. GTA's stories are definitely interesting and the characters are memorable. Saint's Row, once again, is as generic as can possibly be.
the list goes on.
just warning the PS3 owners, avoid it like the clap ;)

you realize how ridiculous that sounds, right? these are game systems....they....don't have feelings.
