Love the game, you can use the GC controller, or the wiimote. I like the wiimote the best, just hold it sideways like playing a Virtual Console game.

Go to Target and get one of those Activision demo discs (if they still have them). Ditch the disc and use the case for Wii Sports. As for the covers, MookyJooky, one of the posters here made a cover you could print out and use, but someone started selling his covers on ebay, thus forcing Mooky to take it down and ruining it for the rest of us.

I couldn't stand having to swing the wiimote whenever you want to throw a grenade, and the other control styles are junk. Hate to say it, but I was pretty dissapointed with Metal Slug, traded it in.

Also, there is no D-pad support on the GC controller, so if you are wanting to play it with the Hori classic controller or an arcade stick, then you are SOL at the moment. I am waiting for the PS2 version for this very reason. I wouldn't touch the Wii version with a ten foot pole.

A classic controller will work fine, right? I've ordered a new copy from an amazon.com seller for 30 bucks shipped.

If the analog works on the GC controller then ill b fine , seeing as how my love started for these games is at the arcade. So is there any way ill be able to showcase my wii sports in a regular case since someone ruined it for everybody???

Nope.

That is a serious oversight.

It works best with the GC controller, as most of the Wii remote control schemes either have trouble with aiming or throwing grenades. Two of the five Wii Remote schemes flat out don't work, two work alright, and one works well.

That is a serious oversight.
I've heard that Nintendo isn't helping any developers offer support for the CC, so they're forced to implement GC controller options instead.

I'll be trading mine in once it hits for PS2. All the controller options are terrible...

Waggling for grenades = fail. No dpad support = fail.

Just rented this today, will be looking forward to trying out the options.

It should be noted that the Activision preview disc (it's a DVD with trailers, not a playable demo disc) does not use an official Wii case. It's a white DVD case, sure, but it uses a much flimsier plastic that doesn't snap together very well and it even appears to be a little translucent (i.e. milky) compared to the solid white Wii cases.

The D pad on the cube controller blows anyways. Just use the analog stick and you'll be fine. The arcade version doesn't use a D pad.

I own the game and think it's great.

I used the GC controller to play through half the games. The wii remote wasn't doing it for me.

This is absolutely terrible. And I love Metal Slug. All of the various Wii-mote control schemes are completely unusuable. You can use a Gamecube controller, but even that doesn't work very well since you can't use the d-pad. The other major issue is that enemies don't flash when you hit them like in the arcade versions. This is just a minor quibble, right? Wrong. You need to see those hit flashes in order to know whether or not you're actually damaging bosses. This compilation was a disaster and I really hope that SNK doesn't fuck up the PS2 version.

The "NES style" option is the best but even then, flicking the wii mote for grenades is very unreliable. You can't pull off a precision jump and a throw a grenade at the same time, which is a pretty important tactic on bosses.

I've never been into the Metal Slug games, because...well I never really knew about them. But a cool 2D compliation disk seemed really appealing. It is a real bummer that it didn't turn out better.

It's easy to see if they're hitting the bosses or not, because if you hit him, the bullets stop, otherwise, they don't. It's not an issue unless you're anal about this stuff, which you seem to be.

You should at least give it a rental to try it out. None of the controls, besides the tilting options, make the games any less enjoyable. Though if you're that worried about controls or hit flashes, the PS2 or PSP versions may be the way to go.

Got this today after much wishy-washing. Used an old gift card and the $10 off coupon at Best Buy to get it for $21.

So worth it. If you're one to complain about extras and the like, it's not for you. If you're like me, and by owning Nintendo consoles, don't have any other versions of these games, they are by far fun enough to keep you and a friend occupied. Regular controls (sideways wiimote/Wavebird) are perfectly fine and not worth the nerd-spaz that the internet has sprayed towards this title. Credit to SNK to sticking the other ones in there for fun. Normally everyone bitches when there are no additions, this one apparently had too many.

I'll recommend it!

Finally got around to playing the first few missions of Metal Slug 1 (needed to get it returned to Blockbuster). I can certainly see how Metal Slug fans might be put off by the control methods, but I found the Wiimote option perfectly fine. Probably because the only time I used grenades was at the beginning just to see how it worked. Obviously I suck at these games. But I enjoy them!

Grenades respawn with you and are your biggest damage dealers. :P

And they bounce like insane. Once you get enough practice, you can put a grenade fucking anywhere on the screen, or a LOT in a boss.

The missing hit flashes are a huge deal for me, they are a staple of the MS franchise. This disc may also be the sloppiest, laziest port/compilation Ive ever seen. But that said, Im not anal and the games are still good enough to stand on their own, even with the crap presentation.

I bet ya they dont even fix the hit flash problem for the ps2 release.

I'm hoping they do... it's the only real excuse as to why they've delayed the PS2 version for MONTHS at this point.

Well if they fix the problem, I'll be picking the game up. If they dont I wont. But the utterly sloppy, lazy coding of the Wii version doesnt fill me with hope for the ps2 version.

Definately worth $30. Although I joke with friends that this will be the first bargain bin/hard to find Wii game.

I'm renting this game now from gameznflix, and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I think it's a great game, definitely worth $30, because that would be a steal if these games were in the VC individually. But, if you're like me, a long rental will suffice, and maybe a purchase down the road when it's only $20.

I had no idea what to expect from this game, and it wasn't until I started playing it that I realized I used to play this all the time at the arcade when I was young, I just had forgotten what it was called. So it was a great trip down memory lane. I think even the first Metal Slug had good graphics for its time, and the replayability factor is high, especially if you have a 2nd player.

The games are short, but tough enough. Then again, I died so often that if I were really playing with quarters, I would have spent $40 on the first two games alone. Probably because I didn't know how to throw grenades until I read this forum.

Is this the only game that was originally an arcade game? I wish we could see more blasts from the past on the Wii (i.e. Simpsons Arcade...i wish)

Rented this and really like it. I have never played a Metal Slug game before. Thank God I get unlimited lives or I would hate this game. I'm using the Gamecube setup and like the fact that I can just relax and have some mindless fun.

Just got this for $20 at Best Buy on clearance, and the Wiimote controls arent standing out to me. I will be getting my cube controllers back today and can't wait to slug it up with real controls.

You can use just the wiimote(two different ways, and for left and rightys), you can use just the nunchuk, you can use both, and you can use a gamecube controller.

I recomend the PS2 version for more accurate Arcade emulation.

I tried this one, but couldn't stand the changes to the game themselves, no real problems with the controls as I used a GC pad.

Then again, I used to be a big Neo-Geo fanboy, so I'm picky about their games.

After reading pros and cons from Wii and PS2 versions, i'll go with the PS2 version, simply b/c it got the "home sweet home" touch to it. I already got the PSP version, it's a damn fun game and yes, the flashing of the enemies is very important, espeically you played this game before in the good old days.

I have this for the Wii and the ps2 and I recommend the ps2 version.

The problem with the 300 different Wii control schemes is that NONE of them are good. The GC controller doesnt support the d-pad, only analog stick, wtf? And the best Wiimote control method still involves 'shaking' the Wiimote to throw grenades. All the other control schemes are just gimmicky and unplayable at high levels. And no support for the Classic controller??? The only way I could reccomend this game is if you dont have a ps2.

Man, you guys are ridiculous. I own Metal Slug Anthology and have beaten them all so far, and there are no problems whatsoever with it. Just use the GC controller and there are no issues at all.

As for the bosses not flashing when hit...Not sure that even needs to be addressed.

It was an issue, and they went ahead and fixed it in the PS2 version so it would be that much more arcade perfect.

There are a few other nitpick issues, but, they don't matter too much.

I dunno... it's weird, but not having the hitflashes really threw things off for me. I usually don't care about things that seem minor like that, but I guess that when I'm paying complete attention to my character and not even looking at the boss, it's nice to know that I'm hurting the boss thanks to some flashing in the corner of my eye.

Either way, the Japanese PS2 release just came out so I'm hoping that's the one that's perfect. Gotta wait for some people to be guinea pigs though.

I love this game! Just rented it off Gamefly...After hearing the poor reviews, I wasn't expecting much...I love 2d shooters, and love SNK for that matter, the shaking of the controller for grenades didn't really piss me off that much...This is sick...I'm buying it for $25 somewhere...

Just rented this from gameznflix. Does anyone else get really bad slowdown on this game? I'm getting it even when there's only two walking enemies on the screen. This is really ruining it for me and i can't really get into the game like i did with older versions of these games.

It runs perfect for me when lots of bad guys. Like on the part where you join forces with the enemy to fight the UFO runs with no problems.

I think you got a bad copy.
