I posted this on avsforum as well..might get an answer from there too:
Up until today my ps3 was working fine. I started up the console remembered R:FoM was still inside. I kept pressing left on the bd remote to bypass the gameplay and once that happend I went to check out the psn store. From there I popped in the BD movie click and this is where it goes downhill. The movie doesn't play and I get no picture through hdmi. Since my sound output is optical...I hear no sounds at all. Even if I turn off the power in the back and turn it back on..nada. I hear the fans going, I can insert/eject a disc and turn it off/on by using the touch power button. I even tried going component w/holding the power down and no luck.
This sucks because I was planning on finishing up GT:HD so I can play the drift trials.
I'm going to turn off/unplug the cord and see what happens tomorrow. If nada, well I'm glad I bought the warranty from Best Buy (I'd rather get my ps3 there and now than wait a week or two).
If anyone has had this problem and got it fixed w/o returning it please let me know.
This happened on:
v1.51
Olevia 232v
3ft monoprice cable HDMI
3ft optical out monoprice

Quick question: The HDD for the ps3 is SATA correct? I'm asking because I asked the guy at BBuy if they could switch the HDD because I don't want to re-download/buy and play my games from square one. He said it was against their policy. If this is the case, I was going to buy an enclosure and get all my files, put them on a temp HDD and transfer back to new drive.
Can anyone confirm that they can't swap the HDD? Thanks in advance!

I think the swap can only be done in the wayyou describe. With the PS3's backup/restore feature.
I remember reading that someone hooked up the PS3 HDD to their computer and it didn't read.
And I don't know what type of backup utility BB uses to copy or image drives.

I think you read my problem thread... My situation was resolved by resetting my TV. Do you have any other devices you can hook up to the TV to eliminate the problem being in the HDMI port on the TV or the cable itself??
Do yu

Do these kinds of problems only happen with HDMI? Just curious.

Would Best Buy even notice if you returned the PS3 without the HDD? :)

dallow - thanks for the info. I guess I have to re-dl and play my games again..bleh
Chi - Yup I read and posted in your thread. HDMI is no longer an issue because it wouldn't run on component or the a/v cables on my other tv and BB couldn't get it to work.
Apos - dunno
Zew - hehe tempting but I'm pretty sure they'll find out later though.

Figured I would check back with you. Did they finally get your PS3 replaced and get you back up and running?

Got my replacement last week. Everything working fine. I was able to swap hard drives but I still had to reformat because the ps3 wasn't accepting it. Maybe because the ps3 was v1.31 and my hdd was v1.51? I probably could've found a way but no biggie, I just wanted to play ya know. I'm going to start using a "memory card" save just in case it happens again or decide to get a bigger hard drive.
The irony of this is, I posted I was getting it replaced last week and when I got home to go online w/it. My internet went to shit. :D

Good to see you're back in business. I bought some clearance component cables from TRU to try and resolve my HDMI issue but I haven't switched out the connections on my TV. That's a good thing to know about the HD. Might be a good idea to backup all gamesaves just in case of a crapout or if you go to upgrade in the future.
