Maybe she just automatically jumps during a combo or soomething

If I have to thrust the controller up to get her to jump, someone's getting kicked in the nuts.

Seriously.. what the hell. The jumps better not be automatic. The lack of a jump button in a game of this type is almost a complete deal killer.

the default X button is for jumping, i'm 100% sure!!! Although, no buttons with the word JUMP next to them, i'm sure the X button is the jump button.

it says X is for Pickup/Use Throw (hold for Aftertouch)

Well, with remote play, if the download is avail, you can use your PSP control your PS3 right now and have it downloaded to the PS3... By the time you're home, you can just play it!

to fairly answer your question, no, there's no JUMP button, because there's no word JUMP next to the buttons. All buttons are assigned to something else... However, being a gamer, it's logical to assume X is the jump button.

Not every game uses X for jumping. That's so last gen. Oblivion uses triangle!

This is REALLY funny. People are freaking out all over the internet. :)

Personally, I don't ever really remember seeing her jumping. Only evading or doing the powered up combos is when she got airborne. At least from memory.

I remember people spazzing over no jumping for FPS too. I'm sure it'll be like then, and it'll make sense once the game is in the hands of the gamers (not much longer now for the demo!).

Anyway, here is a new Dev blog post: (http://blogs.ign.com/Heavenly_Sword/2007/07/25/61327/)

Heavenly Sword Demo: A Ninja's Guide to Success

Heavenly Sword Demo: A Ninja's Guide to Success
I’m taking a guess that, if you’re reading this blog, chances are you’ve seen the episode of Heroes in which Niki Sanders (aka Jessica) and her son Micah start the show playing Heavenly Sword. Am I right?

Well now you can do what they were doing - or at least you can from Thursday July 26, anyway! That’s right: the demo of Heavenly Sword came flying out of Format Testing and is hitting Playstation Network tomorrow - but then you all already knew that, didn’t you?

But, if the internet is awash with this news already, why should you read this blog update? Well, it's only here that I can give you guys the inside track to make sure you get the most out of the demo. Spread the word, this is the place to be...

So, as I say, what I want to do here is highlight some of the cool bits for you to check out in the demo. Call it a personal 'Mat Hart Guided Tour of the Heavenly Sword Demo' if you like. Sound cool?

Our demo opens with Nariko and her adopted sister looking out over an ancient water temple as they begin their search for their father. Kai quickly runs off to hide safely from Bohan’s soldiers and the game begins as Nariko attempts to find a way down to the temple. In a short space of time, you’ll find yourself in the thick of it as Bohan’s soldiers and guards rush in and attack Nariko.

So, things to try out are:

- Experiment with stance switching. Nariko can instantly switch between stances using the shoulder buttons. Your standard stance is the Speed Stance, L1 pressed and held is the Ranged Stance and R1 pressed and held is the Power Stance. You’ll find the various enemies react differently to each stance, meaning you’ll need to find different tactics to defeat them with style.

- Once you’ve mastered the basic attacks, it's time to try some advanced stuff. Wait for an enemy to attack and hit TRIANGLE to counter their strike. This relies on careful timing but, if you get it just right, you’ll deliver a killing blow to your attacker.

- By this time, you should have some Superstyle built up. Look at the HUD element in the top left: the inner dial is your Superstyle bar. Whenever one or more of the gems light up, you have access to a variety of Superstyles that can wipe out dozens (and in later levels, literally hundreds) of opponents in one devastating blow. These moves are stance specific so, at each level, you have a Speed, Power and Ranged Superstyle. Activate these using CIRCLE while in the stance of your choice. Obviously the more gems highlighted, the bigger and more devastating the Superstyle!

- Got that nailed? Sweet! Now try using L1+TRIANGLE on someone who's staggered - they'll fly up into the air. If you’re quick enough, jerk the pad up and Nariko will launch into an aerial combo. Try SQUARE + SQUARE + SQUARE to start with but don’t forget that other combos are shown in the pause menu.

- On that note, Nariko only has a handful of moves available in the demo, with tonnes more to unlock during the full game. Some of these moves have a little broken shield icon which signifies that this is a Block Breaker move - use these to break down enemy defenses.

Hopefully, this’ll give you a good place to start for now. Let me know how you get on - I’d love to hear what you find cool! Over the next few weeks, I’ll try and reveal more of the techniques and tactics you can use in the demo and final game.

One final sneaky tip: don’t kill the axeman during the opening hero sequence (i.e. miss the final SQUARE press) as you slide down the ropes. This’ll give you a chance to see what it’s like fighting a tougher character!

- Mat Hart

Yup, it's short.

Here's some tips from the dev, he posted on GAF and said sorry it's so short.

Hi guys,

Here's some tips to get more out of the demo:

- blocking is automatic but you have to be in the right stance. ie.

Speed Stance will block Blue Attacks
Power Stance will block Orange Attacks
Evade will avoid the unblockable Red Attacks
Range Stance won't block

Learn the block-breaker combos in the pause menu to break enemy blocking
Master Counters
If you get KO'd jerk the motion controller upwards while you are still in the air

To do an aerial combo:

L1+triangle launches an enemy up in the air (not easy to do)
jerk controller up to launch yourself into air
try one of the aerial combos in the pause menu

Have fun and sorry it is so short.
Also, this game has a lot of voice dubs supported:

Languages supported:

Dansk
Deutsch
English
Espanol
Francais
Italianio
Nederlands
Norsk
Portugues
Suomi
Svenska

Another tip:

Mr T here, yes.

Also L1+TRIANGLE can be used to sweep debris into enemies (demo areas are a little too tight for this).

Cheers

These looked like very low level baddies too, so it should be tougher in the real game. You don't get to fight the mean looking bunch that rushes through the door at the end of the demo. I think that might have showed more of an example of how different styles/techniques the tougher enemies have.

Hence why the demo should have been longer. It wasn't even a sip. They let a single drop fall onto our tongues, that's about it.

Less of a demo and more of a tech showpiece.

That said, it's pretty damn awesome. Looks amazing despite being an earlier build. And I'm totally feeling the combat system. It's a shame it was so short, but my interest in the game is now even higher.

Am downloading now.

Unfortunatly, according to some others who have already downloaded it, it's only in 720p.
Those of us who have 1080i only televisions (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) will have to play it in freaking last gen 480p. :bomb:

--Scott

Is the whole game going to be 720p, or is this just because it's a demo? Gimme 1080p games, dammit!

Still...looks like quite a gorgeous game. Hopefully it's just what the PS3 has been waiting for. The next months should be amazing for me with this one, Lair, and Halo 3 dropping within weeks of each other

I had a feeling it would be short. I have a feeling the game will clock in around 10 hours total. Wow.

Way too short, but I can see why. The two fight scenes you get to play through are nothing short of stunning.

Echoing Sean's comments...you can't button mash. I figured that out on my first time through the demo, when one of the guys blocked every attack of mine for a solid minute. I drew the comparison to a god of war style game, but with actual tactics thrown in for good measure.

Environment is amazing (loved being able to throw people completely out of the plaza), and the moves are great. (Broke many necks, kicked many people in the nuts)

Preorder is going in asap for this one. If they can make it 30-35 hours of gameplay, I'll be more than happy to drop 60 for this one.

I loved it, but it was too short. I like the how simple the pick up shit mechanic is, I just press X near an object or dead body and toss it where ever I like. The physics seem to be a little awkward though, as I tossed a foot stool and it bounced from one side of that little arena and back towards the other.

It's the same demo that they've been showing for the past year or so, which the shortness has always been the one con everybody's mentioned. I love how Andy Serkis has essentially two roles in the game, the main bad guy and Nariko's sister who's obviously a knockoff of Gollum.

The volume increase was because they were 'super styles', however, I did nock them back a bit and do some balancing just a day or so ago.

The audio (music cutting out) glitches during the Ninja Sequence are also fixed.

FYI the demo was locked down ages ago, plenty of spit n polish has been done since then right.

Hmm... well from the demo it's about what it has looked like the whole time. I wish there were a few less cinematics in the middle of combat as every time you counter it kind of takes you out of the action so that you can see a move in slow motion. The animation in parts struck me as kind of choppy, but I'm sure that will probably be ironed out by the time the game releases.

Overall, it seems like it will be fun, but I really hope they tone down the amount of scripted counters.

What are you working on?

After playing the demo (which does a great job of making you clamor for more, IMO), I'm not sure I can take the devs seriously. Those who said "it's not 'Goddess of War,'" at any rate. Some of the gameplay suggested to me that button mashing won't work very well in this game, and that's good. It's still very, very similar to GoW.

And that's...a good thing.

From GameSpot's preview:

You'll even be rewarded for fighting with style and grace by Heavenly Sword's glyph system. Though Sony admits you'll be able to get through most of the game by button-mashing, you'll accrue points for using flashier and more diverse maneuvers against your enemies, and these points will unlock up to three glyphs per level. Each glyph will give you some kind of new goody, whether it's a basic attack combo or a making-of video you can access from the main menu. Stylish combat performance will also build up "super styles," which are cinematic one-off, one-hit-kill attacks you can unleash when you build them up through fighting.

Seems like you could get by with button mashing, but that learning the combat system would probably make things more rewarding.

I dunno, but I'm realizing how cool that little scene is with Nariko and her sister and why this game might be incredibly awesome even if the gameplay is meh.

I think the facial expressions in that 10 seconds or whatever were amazingly well done. i'm approaching art$$$ territory now, but games never come close to the quality where you're noticing things about the character's relationships through subtle body language and expressions. Mostly games just use words (which is why I hate J-rpg stories with a passion--it's all dialog and symbolism to tell the whole story.) But I actually had a sense that these characters are much more than the usual 2 dimensional personalities we get in games.

if there's more where that came from, this could be one of the first games to have true cinematic quality in its story and "acting"

For fun: fight really well on the first part and charge up the 3 orbs, then when you get the next scene, hold L1 and press O next to an enemy. She does a finisher that spins a guy around the whole area with her chain blades-- it kills everyone in that area in one hit (and ends the demo :-( )

The way I pop up guys is I immediately shake up after pushing L1+ triangle.

i think you have to land a hit to be able to do the jump up move? I was only able to do it a couple times after i landed a hit. After that it wasn't happening anymore and then I realized that the enemies were all blocking.

I think it'd be much easier to just assign the jump up move to a button .

Oops Im sorry. I replayed it right now, and you don't shake immediately, you shake when the enemy is as high as they can go in the air.

The game seemed okay to me, but nothing I'd buy at full price. The lack of a jump button tells me there won't be any real platforming, and that disappoints me.

The graphics however, really get me excited about what future PS3 games will look like. :)

Hah. Yeah HS isn't a platformer... Though, you'll get a different type of gameplay with the second character (the younger girl with the hat). She has a whole other set of moves and skills.

>>arg wrong button.

Have you guys tried picking up the shields and throwing them? Pretty wicked! Also you can pick up pretty much everything. It is fun to throw the corpses of their fallen comrades at them.

Also, the more orbs you have, the more damage you do. 1 orb I think kills one guy, and powering up to 3 will allow you to devestate the whole field.

The "counter-slow-mo" doesn't always effect the game speed. Some times when you counter, it'll just keep running in normal time. Haven't figure out just what makes it slow or stay the same just yet.

Yup, and it's obviously not a good idea to try it when you're surrounded, because you'll get hit before you shake ;)

Ahhhh so those orbs gives you the ability to do finishing moves. I was wondering how I was doing them, thanks :D

I just played through the demo once, and I enjoyed it a good deal. I never gave the GoW games a real chance, and after playing this I might just have to revisit them.

The graphics in Heavenly Sword are obviously very stunning. My only complaints about the visuals are minor: the framerate dips sometimes, something they hopefully address in the two months before the game's release, and it seems like vsync isn't on at times.

I'm absolutely loving the facial mapping in the characters, a process which is shown well in the "Making Of" Heavenly Sword video in the Playstation Store. It's great how a change in facial expressions, a subtle detail overlooked in almost all games, adds to the effectiveness of a cutscene. This was probably the most impressive part of the overall presentation for me.

I've never been an audiophile, as I play almost everything in boring old stereo, but the game sounds good from what I can tell. :)

Gameplay didn't let down either, which is what I was most concerned about, considering the developers behind the game. I didn't tinker with the other combat styles yet, but it's very rewarding consistently countering the enemies' attacks. There seems to be a decent variety of combos to pull off too, although I couldn't execute an aerial combo the two times I tried. I'm sure I'll get it in the second playthrough. :P

I'm definitely pre-ordering this game now. Between playing this demo and hearing positive press on Lair lately (not just the meaningless Play 9/10 review), my doubts about the PS3's 2007 first party offerings are quelled. I'm almost positive Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted: DT, and Hot Shot Golfs 5 - a series I'm really looking forward to trying out for the first time - will turn out to be fantastic, so with these five solid first party offerings, possibly a sleeper hit in Folklore (the demo was fun, but I'm not completely sold yet), and all the multi-platform stuff, I'll be enjoying my recent PS3 purchase a great deal.

And then I also have a 360 and Wii. Ugh, this will be quite possibly the most I spend on videogames in a 5-month span ever.

I don't know anything about the controller shaking nonsense, but I'm really glad that you can hit an enemy up in the air, switch to another weapon, and juggle them. It feels legitimately different from how DMC does that juggling as well.

Okay, then my one concern (that I failed to mention) is overall length. These kinds of games can be very brief affairs. I'm personally hoping for at least a 10-hour game, and high replayability would be terrific as well.

I've now got this and Lair pre-ordered for about ~$90 shipped for both. It isn't very CAG-like of me, but these are two games I really want to play on day 1 (give or take a day or three for transit time).

I played though it again, I feel a little better about it but I still have some complaints.

No jump in a 3rd person action game to me is just plain ridiculous. Maybe this game will open my eyes to not having jump, maybe I would feel better if I didn't think the dodge move didn't feel good enough.

I'd rather have a blocking button myself, seeing as the L & R 2 only moved the camera slightly which you didn't really need to use. Makes it seem like those buttons could be put to better use.

Shaking the controller is just dumb, anyway you put it. If I wanted shitty motion controller I'd actually use my Wii.

I also thought it would be a more blood filled game. The blood animation looked weak, only a little then it would disappear. I thought it would be a game where blood splatters would stay and be everywhere.

Stiff animation sometimes, like doing those aerial combo moves. In one of them she paused for like a second or two then she did the move. Real buzz killer for me.

I really wanted to love this game, don't get me wrong I don't hate it or wish it to "flop" in retail sales, I'm just personally dissipointed with it.

I threw a few...they bounced around all the enemies which was pretty bad ass. is there something you have to press?

I like how there are all these context sensitive easter eggs...I've played the demo like 10 times and I'm still seeing new moves.

imascrub
07-27-2007, 05:20 AM
i still don't know how i threw a couple guys off the edge. I think to break the guy's neck with her legs you gotta hit the counter button as soon as the enemy hits, otherwise if you press the counter button with a slight delay after the clanging sound, you'll flip them backwards with a flash kick type move (the only move I can do consistently).

I kind of agree with some of the points made by Radioactive. Though it's not crucial to the game, not having a jump feels very awkward for me. I feel kind of restricted when all I can do is roll away and run around, like my feet are bound to the ground (until I can land the aerial combo starter that is). For such an acrobatic character it does seem a bit odd with no jump.

Also having the automatic blocking is weird at first since I am used to L1 for block in...pretty much all action/platforming games I've played recently (GoW 1/2, NGS), but once you get used to it it's not so bad. I've still yet to get there though since I find myself holding down some button when I want to block. L1 just also happens to be the ranged stance which I don't think has blocking.

I've played the demo for about 5 minutes now.. and this game makes God of War its bitch. Seriously. From the QTE's (which I love), the whole countering system (Seriously, dude smacked me up in the air.. I threw the sword, hooked him, and pulled myself to him).. it's just beautiful. I was in a crowd of enemies and she latched one guy and swung him around over and over and cleared everyone out.

I'm payin' full price for this one.

//edit: I haven't seen anyone mention it, but the facial animations and especially the lip synching are spot on.

Agree with pretty much everything in this post. Completely hate Sixaxis controls, the game's framerate is annoying, it's slow(compated to DMC and GoW), and seems like it's gonna be insanely repetitive.

I don't expect this to make much of a splash this (HUGE) fall.

edit: With that said, however, I'll rent the game when it comes out. I just don't think it is gonna be big compared to similar games in the genre such as DMC, GoW and Ninja Gaiden.

edit2: this is just my opinion based on the demo. If the demo is in fact, months old, then I think that the retail product will probably be much better.

I see it more as a trailer because you aren't just picking up and playing a random part of the game for 2 minutes. You're actually playing 2 minutes of a part that the developers chose specifically for a reason along with what we're able to do in that area/span of time. Though I can see why you see it more akin to just a random 20 second movie clip since it's just one small area of the game that is shown, but regardless it's not like we are able to randomly choose the area we play.

EDIT: I guess the word teaser works better than trailer in this case considering how short it was. Anyhow, this isn't really worth going back and forth over, lol. :P

The LAIR demo is coming out after the game is released. The dev team said that they were being pushed for time and didn't have time to do a demo or something like that.

And yeah, the enemies are a lot smarter in this than GoW. In GoW they just stand there and wait for you to kill them. Maybe they'll occassionally attack..but thats about all. You could probably button mash your way though some parts, but that doesn't bother me since the combat is waaaaaaaay deeper than in GoW.

though it's a short demo, try playing it over again with different moves and experimenting around. There are many moves for each stance, and some of them look pretty sweet. The aerial combos, though kind of hard to get them started are pretty fun to look at, and who doesn't like watchin her chop some balls up.

and there aren't any framerate issues for me. I don't notice any annoyingly glaring frame stuttering/skipping/slowdowns. It's just the nature of the amount of animations coupled with the fps. On the whole everything is pretty fluid for me.

People hear that they are using big name stunt actors, tons of camera to record their movements, are using new technology for face capture, and what not.

People forget, that most of that work is going into the game's cutscenes. Sure some of it will rub off into the game's main animations. But all that effort wasn't focused on making the gameplay look realistic.

What's up with the crazy as cat-shit girl?
Have you ever seen the Lord of the Rings? She's essentially a clone of Gollum, as the same guy did all the mo-capping for both.

I'm pretty impressed with the animation of the gameplay so far. After (finally) downloading it last night, my fingers wore themselves out playing. :)

The cutscenes look VERY good so far to boot. I like the lip-sync... pretty amazing for a game. :)

I played Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox back when it first came out. Yesterday I got to give the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo a whirl. This morning I played the Heavenly Sword demo and unfortunately, it doesn't stand up for me.

I think part of it is that compared to both Ninja Gaiden and God of War, this game seems to lack the visceral impact of the afore-mentioned titles. I get amped up playing God of War and Ninja Gaiden. With this it was kind of like, "Meh, when's the next button pressing part? That was cool looking."

They can keep the cut scenes, and the lip-syncing. I want a kick ass action game and from what I played, this is no Ninja Gaiden.

You're gonna have to accept the fact this game is not Ninja Gaiden, and isn't trying to be.

this is no Ninja Gaiden.

Yeah but you have to think though, Ninja Gaiden is the best of the best of the action game. So not much can compete with it at all. HS from what I played is tied for me around GOW. Currently I think it's better then GOW because the combat is much deeper then GOW IMO. Plus the enemies actually try to kill you in Hs, In GOW they kinda linger around waiting for you to kill them. I don't know I respect your opinion and everything but no way you can compare HS to Ninja Gaiden. That game is in a league of it's own IMO.

Exactly.

One thing this has over NG (Sigma at least) no loading while fighting :-P

It's happened to me a lot...even happened today when I played it. Plus there are way too many loading spots...I'm enduring it somehow though :-P

Played the demo at my friend's place the other day.

Looked nice and the combat system was fun. Not sure yet if I'll be picking it up on Day 1 though.
