Markman, how does the conversion seem to be for VF5? I assume the game runs flawlessly? Also, how does the extra content (everything outside of arcade mode) seem to be compared to what we got with VF4 EVO?

I'll be purchasing this asap. I absolutely loved every VF games (especially VF4 on PS2). I can't wait to finally play a good next generation fighter (DoA4 is fine online, but offline is where it suffers due to horrid A.I.).

Compared to VF4 Evo... hrmm.. damn... I'll just say the game looks pretty lol.

It doesn't have a tutorial mode... but it's still good fun.

Btw, the 10th anniversary comes with the first wave of Japanese copies of VF5.

MarkMan

I agree that the 360 dpad would be terrible for this game... I actually prefer stick though, so it's not an issue... It's really tough to do some of the advanced stuff on pad.

And Motorstorm is :/ .... I hope they put more effort into the features and online aspect if there is a future motorstorm game in the works... it's just lacking, straight up.

Saw some bad news over at Kotaku:

* February 8th, 2007
* 600,000 PS3s
* Virtua Fighter 5 Copies Sold: 30,000

* December 29th, 2005
* 80,000 Xbox 360s
* Dead or Alive 4 Copies Sold: 60,000

In other related Virtua Fighter 5 disaster news, the Mainichi News reports that Sega's slick VF 5 joystick has been found to be faulty. Sales of it have ceased and refunds are being offered. Sega is investingating the issue.

Did you buy the arcade stick MarkMan?

The game disc will have commentary based on the language settings you designate in the XMB settings. If you have it set on Japanese you'll get Japanese commentary... English, English.. word.

Contrary to all these negative reports:

01. (PS3, Sega) Virtua Fighter 5 - 48,346 / NEW

02. (WII, Nintendo) Wii Sports - 45,897 / 1,004,555

VF5 took the #1 console spot in sales for last week.

But based on those numbers, it was a slow week lol.

I am really interested in this game, but being a "cheap ass gamer" I really am having a hard time justifying the $60 game+the stick. I am not much of a fighting game fan(mainly, because I never played them), but I did happen to like DOA4. The only problem with DOA4 was that the AI felt cheap, and the gameplay devolved into mindless button-mashing.

I guess what I am trying to say is, that I need some opinions on why this game is good, and reasons for why I should buy it.

Like all fighting games, scores shouldn't matter for shit. The people reviewing them, 99% of the time don't know shit about the game. They're casual as fuck just like most people that buy it.

Buy a fighting game cuz you like it.

I'll agree though, compared to previous VFs... this one is kinda barebones.

the only thing that's missing is the in depth training mode. Reviewers are making it sound like the game has hardly any content, which is wrong. It's basically the same package as Evo. People just don't like fighting games anymore, but that's a different thread. :)

not sure what you think about fighting games though. I guess I wouldn't recommend it at $60 for someone who isn't already a big fan of fighting games. If your friends suck worse than the A.I. like mine, then all that you have is Quest mode (which I enjoy a lot actually. at the later levels the AI is awesome.) but yeah, there is a chance a new VF5 evo edition could come out in a few years.

And you often do, ad nauseam.

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing MarkMan's impressions of the new characters, if he has any. I find the previews/reviews have been a bit lacking for the more hardcore fighting fans, but it'd be great to hear what someone who knows his Tekken/VF has to say, without worring that people won't know what buffering or just frames are.

Agreed. VF generally has a much longer learning curve than other fighters, but the fun is in plumbing those depths.

A word of friendly advice: if you're new to VF, don't use Akira. I know he looks like the default karate guy who's always meant for new players ... but he isn't. He really, really isn't.

I picked up the game Wednesday and have already logged 100+ fights in Quest Mode. The item battles are incredibly addictive although I wish I could come across some big money making opportunities - I won some tournament and got 10000 gold, but nothing since has approached that amount. I haven't played VF since owning part 2 on the Saturn many, many years ago and had forgotten how fun this series is.

EDIT: Small I noticed you're new to CAG. Welcome and isht!

It depends on your win % once you get to 10th dan... some people will go to Master, some will go to Hunter > Raider route...

I'm assuming since you went from Master > Warrior > Veteran > Gladiator > Vindicator that you've had a 90% winn rate all the way through, right?

Yeah, my win rate was about 90%, when I was 10th dan on Eileen (currently still using).

Was bored of losing left and right to the AI especially the Laus and decided to check out the movies at the VF.TV section. The promo movie B was pretty trippy and gave me a WTF moment.

Does anyone have the VF5 strategy guide? I flipped through it real quick and I was wondering what it's like. I might get it for VF4 Evo, are the moves the same?

This game is amazing, i hated VF4 evo but i think i didn't want to give it a chance since the graphics sucked, (i played it after DOA4)

The guide is pretty good, it is better than most fighting game guides out there... it was written by some of the authors that worked on the SF Anniversary guide...

I bought the Hori Fighting Stick 3 from my local EB Games. Since I am not a hardcore VF-fan the Hori stick fits my needs just fine. The stick works fine, very sturdy, and responsive. I recommend this to any casual VF fans. Very good.

I picked this one up as well, and for the casual fighting gamer, I'd say it fits perfectly. I'm no expert by any means, but I can usually play mediocre.. I've been playing for around a week and am not very far along the curve... I am learning some good throws (playing Lion). I'm definitely past the stage of "masher"... because in VF5, I don't think most people appreciate that it's not Tekken. But in that respect, I appreciate its depth of play and anticipate many hours of game time on it... Not necessarily obsessively, of course. :)

The stick also works well in Tekken 5. Some of the harder moves like Yoshimitsu's (some of which I could never master on the controller) are fairly easy to accomplish with the fighting stick...

I want a stick for this game badly...I feel cheap using macros, but how else can you push p+k+g without clawing your hand on the controller?

that nyko converter needs to hurry up :)

Quick question about the rankings...I got to Master as Lion and won several fights in a row after that, including a couple against Veteran ranked players. My ranking meter didn't change at all, but then I got to a fight against a 10th dan Eileen and all of a sudden it was a ranked match where I risked demotion if I lost. I won, and my meter finally went up again. Is this the way the rankings are from here on out where I risk demotion every time I want to fill up the meter? My win % is right around 86 - if I get it up to 90 will it change things? Any info is greatly appreciated!

Whenever a 10th dan faces a master rank it is always a demotion risk/promotion chance situation...

If anyone is interested here's the ranking list:

so after 10th dan is will go like this...

if ur win% <70%
皆伝→巧者→名人→名将→拳王→拳聖→皇帝→拳神
Master->Defender->Enforcer->Sentinel->Portector->Guardian->Paladin->Liberator

ur win% between 70%-80%
皆伝→強者→達人→闘将→闘王→闘聖→大帝→闘神
Master->Hunter->Raider->Barbarian->Assassin->Slayer->Berserker->Destoryer

ur win% >80%
皆伝→猛者→鉄人→武将→武王→武聖→天帝→武神
Master->warrior->veteran->gladiator->vindicator->avenger->vanquisher->Conqueror

This was from http://virtuafighter.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/151654/page/1/fpart/9

translated from Ogi on those boards. They say it's a direct port from the arcade. So far I haven't seen anything saying it's a wrong translation, path, etc...

I'm beginning to think El Blaze is one of my new favorite characters. I love how you can basically rocket charge from almost every move. Plus I always love speedier characters.

that nyko converter needs to hurry up :) I haven't played this one, but for VF4 and VF4:Evo I had no problem hitting 3 buttons at once. I had square and triangle = punch, circle = kick, X = guard. So I'd just hit the bottom 3 with my thumb, no prob.

Of course, I mostly used Jacky and Brad. :lol:

I know there was this one ps3 pad that would only play ps3 games.. but I'm wondering if there's a pad that will work w/ both ps3 and ps2 games. (via ps3)

I used the Tekken 5 stick I got from Gamecrazy two days ago with Virtua Fighter 5 and it's pretty good. I lost for the first time though, since I wasn't used to the stick. My record is now 24-1.

I just bought this game recently and I noticed that there is some consant glitching with the hit detection. I seem to hit people and other people seem to hit me even though there is obviously no contact.

Personally I won't be getting this, none of the versions, just because of the lack of online play.

When I was young, me and some friends from school would gather to play some fighting games, but nowadays it's not possible in the same way for so many reasons. Sad, because the game does indeed seem cool.

I'm waiting for Soul Calibur 4 instead ;)

Because I HATE achievement points. Am I alone on this?

So I got this game for Christmas and have played quest mode for a couple hours or so. How in the heck do you get money? I've beaten 2 tournaments and won one item battle and lost 1 match and all I have is 3050g. I don't ever remember having this much trouble in Evo...
