Politically Incorrect
Poll: over 40% of Canadian teens think America is "evil"
by Arthur Weinreb
June 30, 2004
Can West News Services, owners of several Canadian newspapers including the National Post as well as the Global Television Network commissioned a series of polls to determine how young people feel about the issues that were facing the country’s voters. Dubbed "Youth Vote 2004", the polls, sponsored by the Dominion Institute and Navigator Ltd. were taken with a view to getting more young people involved in the political process.
In one telephone poll of teens between the ages of 14 and 18, over 40 per cent of the respondents described the United States as being "evil". That number rose to 64 per cent for French Canadian youth.
This being Canada, the amount of anti-Americanism that was found is not surprising. What is significant is the high number of teens who used the word "evil" to describe our southern neighbour. As Misty Harris pointed out in her column in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, evil is usually associated with serial killers and "kids who tear the legs off baby spiders." These teens appear to equate George W. Bush and Americans with Osama bin Laden and Hitler, although it is unknown if the teens polled would describe the latter two as being evil. Whether someone who orders planes to be flown into heavily populated buildings would fit that description would make a good subject for a future poll.
The Liberal government came into power in 1993 gushing anti-Americanism. Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s communications director, Francoise Ducros, made headlines when she referred to President Bush as a moron. Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish was picked up on a boom microphone saying, "Damn Americans — I hate those bastards". Not only did Parrish not apologize for her remarks, but she later appeared on a television show hosted by alleged comedian Mike Bullard and laughed about the incident. Parrish played to the anti-Americanism of the youthful studio audience by saying that she couldn’t guarantee that she wouldn’t do it again.
Not only did then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien not take any action against his staff or caucus members, he himself engaged in America-bashing. The depth of his anti-Americanism surfaced shortly after the 9/11 attacks when he blamed the arrogance and greed of the West (read the United States) for those attacks.
When Paul Martin assumed office last December, the childish cheap shots ended but, if anything, anti-Americanism became stronger.
Anti-Americanism played a prominent role in the election strategy of the Liberals. Paul Martin portrayed himself as the saviour of Canadian medicare while saying that if Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada came to power they would introduce "American-style" health care. Martin was happy to take credit for cutting taxes and eliminating the deficit during the 1990s when he was Minister of Finance, but he referred to tax cuts included in the Conservative Party platform as being "American-style tax cuts". Canadians who favour lower taxes or the private delivery of health care services or smaller governments or anything similar to what is found in the United States were called "un-Canadian" by Paul Martin.
It is therefore not surprising that a high percentage of Canadian youth think that the United States is evil. Nor is it surprising that this feeling is more pronounced in Quebec where Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe said that he would rather live under the United Nations than the Stars and Stripes. The left wing Canadian political parties, aided by their supporters in the elite media don’t seem to be able to say anything positive about Canada without denigrating the United States in the process.
The poll results reflect that anti-Americanism will be solidly entrenched in future generations of Canadians. As well as listening to the propaganda espoused by their political leaders and the media, these kids have no experience with what constitutes real evil. They live in a country that much like pre-9/11 America, thinks that terrorist attacks are something that happens in other countries. And as the World War II veterans slowly die off, they have no conviction of the evil that the allies risked their lives to defeat.
With anti-Americanism playing such a prominent role in this past election campaign, it is no wonder that the United States was viewed in such a negative light.

I'm curious as to how many AMERICAN teens see the American Government as evil.
Just about every teen I know would say so. Of course this is slightly slanted. Most of the teens I know come from lower income families. Maybe if the Bush tax cuts actually worked for thier families, it would be a different story...

While I'm sure that's what the Canadians were talking about it's not what makes us evil. We drain the world's resources more than any other nation and we have almost a complete disregard for the environment at home and abroad. Petty political actions like the Iraq invasion are small change in the grand scheme of how we're screwing up the planet.

And im also getting annoyed ith people saying were the best country in the world because of free speech and the like. Really? So the FCC isnt making it so all radio sounds like Disney? So buisness run in Florida dont have the option of a smoking area, even if it means the decimation of said buisness?
I'm enjoying my little corner of the world here in my comic book store, but even we are getting pressured based on content. A law was passed, but thankfully the state prosecuters arnt holding to it, where not only if a book has a violent/sexual image on the cover has to be put out of kids eyes (mostly understandable), but any book that has bad things in it with a perfectly fine cover have to hidden away. What the shit is that?

I didn't say they weren't entitled to an opinion. That I would pee all over it is another matter.
That kind of thinking is the problem with Americans. Totally arrogant.
Evil sounds like a corny word to describe America, so I will instead say that it is an arrogant, wastful, destructive crybaby of a country. At least, some people in it and a lot of it's current leaders are. I know that a lot of people want to change the "destructive" and "wasteful" parts. I won't say that it isn't a fine place to live, but England and Canada and Australia and plenty of other countries are just as good. It's not necessarily the people, but it's the dumbfounding, completly against-policy actions of our president and his administration. This could be a perfectly fine country (as in, one that doesn't rape the planet and start random wars), but it's just the mindset that people like Bush have that's keeping this from being a country that I (or a lot of the rest of the world) can respect politically. Honestly, when there are millions of people that believe in what I quoted, what do you expect? For the world to think that that's really wonderful? Honestly, America's problems in world standing are it's own fault. There is so much that Bush has done wrong, none of the world-wide resentment of the US could possibly be a suprise. I want so bad for it to be a better country, and if people want the world to stop hating us...then quit being arrogant fools. Ug. I don't want to get into this any further. It's complicated. I don't hate America/American's, I just think some things need to be quite a bit different.

If another country's population thinks we are 'evil' that implies that they are not, thus, logically, they believe they are better than the US.
Therefore, it has been put forth that if another country's population believes itself better than that of the US, then this is acceptable and should be considered normal. On the other hand, if the US population believes itself to be above that of another country's population, it is 'arrogance.'
Thanks for clearing that up, chief.

Actually it is correct. The U.S. produces 7.9 million barrels per day. The United States consumed an average of about 20.0 million barrels per day of oil in 2003. The United States averaged total gross oil (crude and products) imports of an estimated 12.2 million barrels per day during 2003.

this is true, but you also have to look at the fact over the past 15 years, the us company's have cut back by 25%, http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/usa.html
During 2003, the United States produced around 7.9 million barrels per day (MMBD) of oil, of which 5.7 MMBD was crude oil, and the rest natural gas liquids and other liquids. U.S. total oil production in 2003 was down sharply (around 2.7 MMBD, or 25%) from the 10.6 MMBD averaged in 1985. U.S. crude oil production, which declined following the oil price collapse of late 1985/early 1986, leveled off in the mid-1990s, and began falling again following the sharp decline in oil prices of late 1997/early 1998. With the rebound in world oil prices since March 1999, U.S. crude production fell slightly in 2002 and 2003, and is now at 50-year lows.

Hey I like America and Americans, I like canada and canadians, no one in my circles "hate America, or consider them Evil,'
I wonder how the polling was conducted, did they call up and just ask" what do you think of america? or did they ask "Would you describe America as the best country in the world or as Evil?
Sure I believe some policies to be arrogant and US Centric but if Canada was the same size and had the same power perhaps they would be the same. I think that the current administation doesn't much care what the rest of the world thinks or does, even though Bush said "either you are with us or against us' I believe his priorties aren't placed on allys nor working together. Maybe he's right maybe he's wrong, but one can (I think) all agree that many other countries think that he's wrong.
I liken Canada and the US to brothers One is big and powerful can suceed in whatever he puts his mind to, is financially secure and if not liked admired/envied by most. Where as Canada is the little brother, trying to show that he isn't his brother and trying really hard to show that he is his own man. In the end though both will be there for each other no matter what.

I don't hate America/American's, I just think some things need to be quite a bit different.
sounds good... maybe we can get all three branches of the US gov't to sit and watch the 2 spiderman movies over and over (until they hear Uncle Ben... With great power comes great responsibility.... I don't think this is only true for superheros but superpowers as well.

The fact that posts like this can happen is the beauty of America. We take this country for granted. And anyone who doesn't believe we are the richest mofo's in the world has got problems. The only thing I wish is that we would freaking give back a lil to the world; ie: Africa...
And my personal bash: Anyone who doesn't like it in America, there's the door. Another great thing about America is that you can easily leave the country if you're a citizen. So stop whining and get the hell out. Or shut up and sit down. But of course, you're entitled to your amendment rights...
Love it or leave it eh? So if one doesn't like it in America you wouldn't invite them to work and do something about it? Sure one is free to move out, but more importantly in the US, in Canada, in the UK we are free to try to change our country, state/province/territory/ city, neighborhood through a free flowing dialog of ideas and action.

Just about every teen I know would say so. Of course this is slightly slanted. Most of the teens I know come from lower income families. Maybe if the Bush tax cuts actually worked for thier families, it would be a different story...

VANCOUVER -- Where would the world be without green garbage bags, zippers and ginger ale?
Canadians have made some wonderful, weird and sometimes dubious contributions to humankind.
Were it not for Canadians, the world would be devoid of paint rollers, snowmobiles and five-pin bowling.
There would be no electric organ, green ink or multiplex movie theatres.
And yes, the recipe for Nanaimo bars comes from the British Columbian town of the same name.
Without Canada, time as we know it would end. Sir Sanford Fleming, a Scottish immigrant to the New World, devised the world's 24-zone standard time system.
"Canadians aren't boring in the least," says Will Ferguson, award-winning author of Canadian History for Dummies and Why I Hate Canadians.
Politically, the country has staked its claim in the "radical middle," he says, but don't let that fool you.
Canadians are diverse, eclectic and eccentric, he says. And pragmatic. Rather than wither in the winter cold, Canadians pulled the toques down over their ears and invented snowmobiles, the electric car heater and the snowblower.
Thank Canada for toboggans.
Canada comes from the native words meaning big village -- much better than Efisga, Tuponia or Colonia. Those names were proposed for the motherland during debates on Confederation.
It is arguably the most ethnically diverse country in the world.
Canada has the highest population of Icelanders outside Iceland and the most Italians outside Italy.
"It's such a culturally diverse and interesting country that has geography and history and people that come from every corner of the globe," says Heritage Minister Sheila Copps. "That's what makes it really unique."
Unique is one way to put it.
Each month in each province there is at least one report of a UFO.
Of all the road accidents that occur in Canada, 0.3 per cent involve a moose. And a Calgary tour company offers a course in igloo building.
Maybe such madness is what makes comedian Rick Mercer feel so lucky to be Canadian.
"I just always feel . . . that we won the Lotto and anyone who was born in Canada or has come to Canada, you won the Lotto," says Rick Mercer, star of CBC's hit comedies Made in Canada and This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
"You know, Canadians don't take themselves that seriously, and quite often we're self-deprecating and that's a character trait I admire greatly in an individual and so I admire it in a nation," says Mercer, who will spend Canada Day working on Made In Canada, albeit from a hammock in his back yard.
Canadians may not take themselves seriously, but they do some seriously strange stuff.
Canada holds the world record for the highest stunt freefall for a 1,100 foot plunge from the CN Tower.
The world's oldest snowboarder hits the slopes in Canada. Wong Yui Hoi, of British Columbia, took up the sport at 75 according to the folks at Guiness.
Canadian Jack McKenzie, 77, is the oldest person to ski to the north pole.
Those months spent with scant daylight hiding from frostbite may go a long way to explain some other Canadian, uh, accomplishments.
Canada boasts the longest gum wrapper chain in the world - 10,387 metres- according to the Guiness book of world records, and the most push-ups in an hour - 3,416.
Canadians hold the record for pogo-stick jumping and the largest hug. They baked the world's largest cherry pie, made the world's largest block of cheese and hold the world kissing title for the most couples smooching simultaneously.
Maybe it's not cabin fever, but brain freeze. A 7-Eleven store in Winnipeg sells more Slurpees per capita than anywhere else in the world.
Canadians eat more Kraft dinner and Albertans more Jello. Details were not available on the favoured flavour.
Canadians have such an imagination they try to take credit for basketball and the telephone, says Ferguson.
"They'll claim the telephone as a Canadian invention. Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, educated in Scotland and most of his research took place in Boston . . . but that doesn't matter because he lived in Canada," Ferguson says.
Yet Canada claims basketball because James Naismith was born in Canada, although he came up with the sport while living in the U.S.
But there's no denying that Toronto's Joe Shuster was co-creator of that greatest of American heroes, Superman.
And who else but the first nation of hockey could have invented Plexiglas, the goalie mask or the referee whistle?
Since beer is practically a sport unto itself in Canada, Vancouver's Steve Pasjack came up with those built-in, tuck-away handles for beer cases in 1957.
And women can blame Canada. Montreal's Canadelle company invented the push-up bra in 1964 and Dennis Colonello invented the abdominizer in 1984.
Our greatest achievement?
"I think Canada's greatest achievement is Canada, just the existence of this country, this wildly diverse, huge, rich, quirky, wonderful country," Ferguson says.

Dude, starman, what are you talking about? I want to know the point that you made. I think it is similar to mine. You aren't making sense.
My point is the opposite of yours. You seem to think that calling someone evil is the same as calling someone tall or harry or pretty. I think calling someone evil is saying you are better than that person.
In that case, you're wrong and he's right. Hang your head in shame.
Yeah, I need to remember my warped sense of moralism where I actually believe good is better than evil. Fuck me.

Fuck the middle east
There's too many problems
They just get in the way
We sure could live without them
They hijack our planes
They raise our oil prices
We'll kill them all and have a ball
And end their fuckin' crisis
BEIRUT, LEBANON-Won't exist once we're done
LIBYA, IRAN-We'll flush the bastards down the can
SYRIANS and SHIITES-Crush their faces with our might
Then Israel and Egypt can live in peace without these dicks

For crying out loud, its a crock of shit Ipsos Reed Poll. They mean NOTHING. They also had a poll where they said "if elections were held today, the Liberals would win in a landslide." THAT poll was taken 2 days after Dion won Liberal Leadership, and the poll was almost ALL supporters or tied to Liberal voters. I'm not saying there arent stupid people up here who enjoy bashing both U.S. and Canada (trust me, that makes me mad also), but you cant listen to those stupid irrelevant polls. They are a waster of time.

Personally these Canada people are right. I have lived here and people have hated me for no reason and picked on like forever. Then I explore the world and find that people dislike me since I have no money.
Again the thing is America is going execute a leader of another country and the country is going down the shist hole.
This whole thing started with the dirty Zionist scum who just happen to be a group of Jews who wanted a state of there own. They did it the rotten bastards. They and there dipstinking little club screwed the Middle East up. If want to blame somebody blame the zionist and what they did in 1939.
LIberate Palisteine I say we should do and kick the zionist scum out and reclaim everybodies lives and land.
Egypt lost land in this also when they did took over Palisteine. Egypt reclaimed missing each others.
Also Canada is a pretty sweet deal. The only thing that people fail to realize is the laws in Canada and ther epolicy on internet freedoms.
Thinking about America is hell the way things went for us. I go outside all I can see is the damage the Zionists did to our fair country.
Remember the Twenties people and remember them well. That was Amerika at it's greatest moment before the Great Depression, WWI, and WWII along with the Gulf War, Desert Storm, Vietnam and Korea.
Canada is telling the truth about America. We probably have a couple of Seproth clones running around but we don't see them.
On that topic there is alot of Russian people in America.
