That's great but what everyone wants to know is how do you tell before you purchase the system that you have the new benq drive?

Exactly - this is the dilemma I'm in now. In particular, I'd like to be able to know if the Costco bundles have them and on those I can't even check the manufactured dates. But I've been looking at the dates on any 360's sitting out at Fry's, CC, or Best Buy. The closest I've come is Oct 2006. I have yet to even see a Nov. 2006 or later, which is the first step (then you still aren't sure till you open it).
It seems someone ought to be able to figure it out by lot numbers or something (there's a bunch of numbers on a sticker on the outside of the box, aren't there)?

Seeing as how it's been 1.25 years and we still can't tell, without opening the system, if you're getting a Samsung or Hitachi, I wouldn't hold my breath that they will find a way to see if it's a BenQ.

Yeah, that's what I figure. I guess my best bet is to wait a few months (to let the newer ones get out a bit more) and get a Costco bundle - if it isn't the right one return it because it is too noisy (should be a valid reason at Costco).
