View Full Version : Best Buy $2 Clearance: CAG State of the Sale
shipwreck

The least secretive clearance sale in internet history is about to start tomorrow and by now every user of any video game website has their lists printed out in hopes of scoring the improbable haul of cheap games at Best Buy tomorrow.
But just how likely are you to score big when the doors swing open tomorrow? Mrs. Shipwreck and I headed to our local Best Buy today to check on the state of the sale. Our plan was to pre-buy a couple of games that we had seen the night before in hopes that we could beat the rush and get a price adjustment on the items at a later date. Well, we arrived about 10 minutes after opening today and we were not the only ones to have this plan (or the lists of games in hand).
Immediately upon arriving in the games department, we spot another customer in the Xbox aisle pushing a cart with around 10-15 games already stacked up and inquiring as to whether they had King Kong for Xbox 360 (they did not). Now knowing that my chances of cheap Xbox and Xbox 360 games were slim to nil, I hurried to the PSP section and relievedly grabbed the last copy of Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins. There was still hope, as I was obviously the first to hit anything past the Microsoft aisle.
I quickly handed the list of highlighted PS2 games to the Mrs. and hurried to the Gamecube section to see if they had any Mario Party 7's. No dice... in fact, the Gamecube selection was very small to begin with, so I moved on to Gameboy Advance and DS. My eyes lit up as I grabbed for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and after some digging I found Harvest Moon DS. Other than that, just about all the other games on the list had been long sold out.
About this time, my wife had finished with the PS2 section with Chronicles of Narnia and Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 in hand. She then took the PSP list and headed off while I decided to go see if cart guy had left anything in Xbox land. He was still looking through the Xbox games and I could see he was grabbing multiple copies of everything on the shelves. By this time, he probably had around 20 games in his cart and I quickly grabbed a copy of King of Fighters: Neowave while it was still on the shelf. As I reached past him, we exchanged some pleasantries and he asked me if that game was on the list that I had. I told him that it was and he proceeded to pick up a copy and then turned the corner to head to the PS2 aisle.
I finished flipping through the Xbox games knowing that there would be little chance of anything remaining (I was correct). The same was true with the 360 section: nada. Mrs. Shipwreck struck out in the PSP department as well, but we decided to just double check through some of the sections again to make sure we didn't miss anything.
Mrs. Shipwreck found some of those bargain "Christmas wrapped" games along the back wall and we picked up a couple of those as I thought they might be included in the sale. She also found a copy of Monster House for the Game Boy Advance which we bought as it looked like it might be fun. After that we were ready to leave as I was happy with the few games that I was able to find. I noticed by this time, cart guy had somewhere between 25-30 games in his cart including the PS2 and PSP games that I had passed on.
Overall, I ended up spending around $250 for 13 games. I can't even imagine what that other guy's bill was going to look like.
So, how are your chances tomorrow? Probably not very good if my local experience is any indication. Most games on the list have been out of stock for weeks and I have to imagine that with how quickly the word on this sale spread, that a lot of people went out to buy games today in hopes of getting the prices adjusted tomorrow. Now, there are certainly deals left to be had out there, but expect a lot of competition for very few games. I'd expect there to be multiple people waiting in the parking lot when Best Buy opens tomorrow and it only takes one "cart guy" to wipe an entire store clean.
Well, the best I can tell you is good luck tomorrow and may the cheapness be with you.
UPDATE (2/26/07):
Well, I just got back from a different Best Buy and here's the latest of my tale. I arrived around 10 minutes after they opened and I decided to do some shopping before getting my purchases from the previous day adjusted. There were already 2 other guys there that had about 10 games in their hands, so I knew there wasn't going to be much left.
I saw a friendly Best Buy employee that I had spoke with on previous visits and he knew why I was there. I asked if they had any of the 360 games and he told me that they hadn't carried any of them for months. I knew this was true, but was hoping for a random King Kong siting. I thanked him and proceeded to look through the Xbox section and I picked up a few random games (the price cards had all been updated to the new prices).
I then proceeded through the rest of the sections and grabbed some more odds and ends including Astonishia Story for $1.99 which I didn't remember seeing on the list.
After I had made my initial pass, I started talking to the employee again and he pointed out some more games and items that had dropped in price. One of these was the Xport for the 360 which I picked up for $29.99.
After all was said and done, I purchased the following:
:360:
Xport - $29.99
:xbox:
187: Ride or Die - $1.99
Dinotopia - $1.99
Marc Ecko's Getting Up - $1.99
Painkiller: Hell Wars - $9.99
SNK Vs. Capcom SVK Chaos - $1.99
:psp:
Astonishia Story x2 $1.99
:gc:
Animaniacs $4.99
WWE Day of Reckoning 2 $1.99
I then took that bag of goodies back out to my car and brought yesterday's purchases back into Best Buy. I returned the Dragon Ball Z game that I had mistakingly bought and then proceeded to have customer service check the rest of the games that I had bought for price drops.
It was quickly apparent that the "Christmas wrapped" games that I had assumed were on sale were ringing up full price, so I went ahead and returned those as well. I was able to get the price adjusted on the rest of the games without any problems. So from my previous haul, I left the store with the following:
:xbox:
King of Fighters Neowave - $4.99
:psp:
Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins - $4.99
:ds:
Harvest Moon DS - $9.99
:ps2:
Chronicles of Narnia - $4.99
:gba:
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories - $1.99
Monster House - $4.99
So in total I picked up 15 games for $61 before tax and the Xport for $30 although I'm not 100% sure that I will end up keeping the Xport.
Good luck to all today!

I managed to hide some stuff behind some shit that nobody will ever buy... I got kinda lucky at my stores and managed to actually find some things (unfortuantely, nothing that I personally wanted) because I was there right when the stores opened this morning. All I wanted was Fire Emblem for the Cube, but that ended up being a wish unrequited at the stores I visited. I didn't see anyone with lists, but then, this area has really never been problematic for finding stuff at these clearances. We are an uninformed city.

good work... sucks how public this is, but what can you do.
Also, smart of you to print the list... most people I bump into never bring a list thus giving me the upper hand (I always carry a list on me with the itesm I want bolded).
again, a well deserved congrads.

Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins, which was pretty much the main reason I went today. I would have been happy just to get that alone.

did you try trading with cart guy in store? he probably didn't know the difference between ps2 jampacks and advance wars ds, but you might have gained some xbox ground with some of the other games you had already gotten.

what games did you find?
Found 2 copies of Mega Man X collection for the PS2, 2 copies of TR Legends for the PSP, 3 copies of Drill Dozer, 2 copies of FF Crystal Chronicles, literally 10 copies of Nanobreaker, 2 copies of GTA SA and... I think that's it. So I found a lot... just not what I actually want.

No, but from what I could see, he didn't have much that I would've wanted. He was buying multiple copies of games like Fight Night Round 3 (Xbox version not 360 version) and some other sports games for the original Xbox.
The only thing that upset mrs. shipwreck was that he grabbed the last copy of Shadow the Hedgehog for PS2 because I had only highlighted that one for Xbox.

My Best Buy was holding a special event tonight for reward zone members. I went and was kinda glancing around the game section. I noticed that a whole family was on the hunt, with the dad having a list and telling his kids what to grab, and he himself looking in other areas for other games. I struck up a conversation with him and said that I'm pretty sure most of the good stuff was gone, because I had gone the night before. He still managed to find a large stack, but mostly of King Kong for PS2 and a few others. I've got one other Best Buy that I'm hitting up tommorow morning, but I doubt I'll find anything there.
However, I have to say that I love you, Shipwreck. I had totally forgotten about those Christmas-ey games, and I hope that the other guy didn't notice them.

I spent all day driving around to 5 stores, and I found mostly nothing!
All the good games have been sold out for ages, and the few I found... didn't really care for. Among the better gems: Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins (PSP) & MM Maverick Hunter X (PSP)....
I also found a couple of DBZ Budokai games (1, 2, 3) for the PS2 and bought the latest 2... but this wasn't a big find since these games have multiple prints in the GH category of the stores!
Capcom Mini Mix (GBA) was strangely $10 in one BB and $15 in another!!! I couldn't pass it up at $10, since I've seen it as high as $20 in some stores...
Other than those... this sale was mostly a waste of time. I can't believe I spent the day driving around for a few DBZ games (they're a dime a dozen) and a Capcom GBA game...
I can't begin to say how pissed off I am at CAG for getting us all hyped about this crazy awesome deal that's not really going to pan out for ANYONE!
I didn't join the site just to have my hopes brought up and crushed before me!!! I think people are better off getting the deals on eBay.
And screw the HOARDERS and EMPLOYEES who are d*cking everyone on this deal!!!!:bomb:

I made myself a shopping list of about 30 games, not a single one was at BB in the mall. The guy there claims that someone from used game store was most likely the suspect for taking absolutely everything on clearance. At least we'll get to see these games really cheap online somewhere. Probably Ebay or craigslist.

At least my city got about 10 inches of snow the last two days so hopefully that thwarted off most hoarders and since I work overnights I'll leave work with ample time to get to my location right about when they open since I didn't have enough extra funds to go ahead of time and buy stuff full price to get it readjusted.

Got 18 games (not a single duplicate), all PS2. 12 are for me, the other 6 will eb up for trade after a price adjustment. I went to my usual BB and they had nothing (I know they had some last week, so I think they were pulled. Will find out tomorrow). I went to an out of the way, but new BB and sure enough I found quite a few things I was looking for. Will be heading back over there tomorrow to pick up any leftovers that some people wanted and price adjusting what I have. Lucky for me there are 4 BB within 20 miles of my house or work so I had a good chance of finding something. :D

Bah......No reason for CAGs to get into a tizzy........not much on these lists that :\
A) They Don't already own
B) Most wouldn't touch with with a 10ft. pole.....even at 2$ ......(See Bad Boys : Miami Takedown or American Idol) ....The gas you burn getting there is worth more than those games.
and
C) The ones that you would want....not a snowball's chance in hell they were even in stock to begin with....(See KILLER 7 for PS2 or PSYCHONAUTS for XBOX)....Yeah right.
P.S. Loved the Typo on --> THE CODFATHER Collector's Edition for XBOX.......
Mafia Fish.....what a concept!!!

So there are random good games that are WELL worth the price. Its just few and far between sadly.

Anyone think this could be the beginning of the end of Best Buy's Price Adjusting policy, at least in it's current state? The widespread abuse by hoarders and today's totals for price adjustments skyrocketing is sure to set off a few red lights at BB corporate.

Just got back from the Midtown Manhattan store. Nothing much there. Absolutelty zero GBA, GC, or DS games. I didnt notice any PSP either. They had a handfull of Xbox and PS2 titles, but they were all shit. One guy ahead of me grabbed the last copy of 'Trapt' which I would have bought. I saw some people with copies of Flatout, and Star Ocean III GH, but I have those games already. There was actually a very helpful employee there pointing out which game they did have in stock, but Im not paying $5 for Amercan Chpper, ya'know? lol
As far as getting upset, Im not upset at all. 90% of these games havent been in stock for months anyway. I would be happy to have found anything. At least this way I save some money.

I have to say that I'm surprised that this writeup made it to the front page of CAG.
Am I the only one who think what Shipwreck has done is shady and shouldn't be advertised to the public? Is this what we want outsiders think that CAG is all about?
What he did was legal, so I guess I can't complain. It just seems sort of desperate. Luckily there was someone else at the store doing the same thing as him (on a very slightly larger scale) so it didn't look as bad to the average reader.
Moderator or not, I don't think hoarding (enjoy your copies of Monster House, Animaniacs, Dinotopia, etc.!) and taking advantage of store policy loopholes is cool, nor should it be advertised on the front page.

I think you may be the only one who thinks that purchasing a game and then asking the store to match their own price reduction is a shady practice. Not to mention, he is not hoarding.... From what I can tell he grabbed one copy of like 13 games. Not 10 copies of each. Eh.. just my opinion. And as far as front page goes... a HUGE BB $2 clearance isn't newsworthy enough? Not sure you're on the right boards, mate.

Are you out of your mind?
How is buying ONE copy of a clearance game 'hoarding' exactly?
And whats wrong with taking advantage of a store policy? Its BB's policy after all. Price adjusting is the same as price mathing other stores, rainchecks, or any other store policy that ensures comsumers dont get ripped off.
I have to say that I'm surprised that this writeup made it to the front page of CAG.

You're out of line dude. He did no hoarding. Not only that he got games he will actually play, which is the reason we all come to CAG.
I think you're just asking for a nice trip to BanFuckville...where very few come back from.

Like I said, he didn't do anything illegal, and you guys are right, "hoarding" isn't the right term.
I understand that there are no rules and no holds barred in such a large (and publicly advertised sale).
My question was more about the placement on the front page. I feel that many CAGs hate fatwallet/slickdeals people because they're hoarders. Fair enough. But do we want to advertise on the front page how a moderator of the forums did the price exchange "trick" on a bunch of games he will likely never play (I realize that this is clearly an assumption on my part)?
Obviously my posts shouldn't turn this thread into a debate (and I think there's another forum for that) about shopping "morality"; I just wanted to post my opinion (isn't that what forums are for?) ... consider this a simple "bury" (to use digg terms), no need to get all uppity.

I'm sort of stumped here. I didn't take advantage of any loophole; it's part of their price guarantee policy which is one of the main reasons I shop at Best Buy and Circuit City in the first place. I see myself as a well informed consumer and I knew that there was only one copy of Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins at that store on Saturday, so why wouldn't I head back and pick that up with any other games that happened to catch my eye?
And as others have said, I don't think I was hoarding at all. The only game I bought multiple copies of was Astonishia Story so that I could possibly trade with someone on CAG for something that they might have found during the sale. I'm a big fan of Animaniacs, so the fact that I've only really seen that game at Best Buy to begin with meant that it was an immediate pick-up at $5. Mrs. Shipwreck thought the Monster House game looked interesting, so we bought that for her. Dinotopia, sure why not, I'll give it a go and if it turns out that it sucks horribly, I'll trade it back in.
Truth be told, the only games that I bought that either my wife or I won't play are the WWE game which I bought for a friend who likes wrestling and Harvest Moon DS which, like the copy of Astonishia Story, I bought to hopefully trade to a CAG since Mrs. Shipwreck has already thoroughly played the copy I bought during Circuit City's Black Friday sale.

Gator, I don't think buying single copies of games a day before the sale is hoarding or a "trick" but you are entitled to your opinion.
Your post does bring up an interesting point to me though, some of the games Shipwreck bought are less than stellar games (187, Dinotopia, Animaniacs).
Shipwreck, did you buy these in a "so cheap they're worth a shot" vain or for trade or are they games you genuinely wanted to play?
I've found myself on occasion buying stuff cos it was too cheap to pass up, then not playing it more than once. Luckily these days I only really buy 360 games or DS/PSP stuff so it doesn't happen as much.
*EDIT* Looks like you've already answered this one Shipwreck *EDIT*

I just wanted Full Auto and a couple GC games, I didnt see much of anythin but GTA SA which I didnt want so I left it for the next person that comes along.
I went to two Best Buys this morning. The thing about these two stores is that they didn't bother pulling the games. They left them on the shelves and were still restickering the price cards when I left the second store.
Here's what I picked up:
PSP
----------
Ape Escape Academy
Go! Sudoku
Monster Hunter Freedom
Virtua Tennis
Worms
But the thing that pisses me off is I had already bought a number of games that appeared on the list a couple of weeks ago because my local BB had a 25% clearance going on. I'm going to have to price adjust the following:
Jak 3
Megaman Maverick Hunter X
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Popolocrois
Sly Cooper
Tiger Woods 2006
Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth
What I'm wondering about, did anybody actually see the "endcap" games get reduced? They were still priced at $9.99 at my store, and those have special UPC stickers.

They were older than the current crop of "endcap" games. At my Best Buy they have these in with the rest of the games, but the placeholder just says something generic on it.
That's where I found the Dinotopia that everyone is so excited about!

Nothing found at the 2 BB's in Chicago on Elston Avenue or North Avenue.
We asked a clerk at each location about Daxter for PSP and they mentioned they hadn't seen that title in stock for a couple of months.
No 360, PSP games for sure. A couple guys were browsing through the DS and PS2 and weren't having any luck. For Xbox they had Painkiller (1 copy) and that was it as far as we could tell.

Hmm... I'll have to give it a try. We bought Gunstar Heroes and Exit a week ago with the 10% off coupon. PSP "endcap" games weren't on the list though, right?

I went at lunch today, nada, zilch, doesn't look like they had much to begin with! There seemed to be cart on the side with some of the clearance games, nothing that I wanted. Just doesn't seem like there was much of anything to begin with.

UPDATE:
I was one of the two guys who beat Shipwreck to the Fields Ertel Store. I got there at 10:00 a.m. with my two kids in tow (its difficult to look for games when trying to keep track of a 4 yr old while holding a 22 month old at the same time. Three other people were at the store when it opened and most of them went for the xbox360 and ds games right off the bat.
I was able to get (all) at $1.99
Maximo: Army of Zin (PS2)
Mortal Kombat: Deception (xbox)
Day of Reckoning 2 (GC)
Marc Ecko's Getting UP (xbox)
Crash Tag Team Racing (GC)
SVC Chaos (xbox)
Need for Speed Underground (xbox)
I passed on the Animaniacs(GC) and Dinotopia(xbox) that shipwreck purchased. I also passed on Ride or Die (xbox) and Chicken Shoot 2 (gba). My only regret was that someone grabbed Samurai Champloo seconds before I got to the S section. That guy purchased around ten games and admitted to me that he was looking for stuff to sell.

Me and 2 co-workers loaded up in a car about 10:30 and got at the Best Buy at 10:45. Our's was HECTIC, people we're running all over the place and the cashier said that they had been waiting outside like it was Black Friday. In the end we split up and hit the gamecube, Ds, 360, and ps2 sections and each went dramatic with it. All in all we got about 60+ games together.
But another good point to make about this is; the best thing to do is grab whatever you can because you can take it back if you don't want it.

I noticed that too actually... since I'm usually not scouring all the shelves and seeing everything that the store has to offer, I guess I've missed how shitty the selection has become... it seems like most good games are off the shelves in a matter of a couple months. Not my problem since I typically buy stuff right away I guess...

Funny you should say that.
Guess who purchased a copy of Killer 7 for the PS2 today?

Wow... today has been interesting so far. I took my lunch break really freakin early this morning so I could be at the nearest BB at 10AM. By the time the doors opened, I counted 18 people there for the "secret clearance" (plus 5 other people there for computer repairs and returning their broken whatchamathingies). It seemed to me that the majority of people there were gamers (hopefully CAG's but definitely gamers). With the exception of 1 person, everyone was 16-25 and all guys. I saw everything from a couple of games scribbled on a napkin to people with fully printed lists to people with PDA's/cell phones with the lists on there.
When the doors opened everyone rushed to their desired game section. Knowing the layout this particular store, I made my way straight to one of the little "islands" in the middle of the walking aisles where I knew they kept most of their cheap games and found a couple of games there while everyone else was still scouring the aisles. There I found Killer 7 (last one), Enthusia, and Tak 3 (last one). By the time I had scoured the games in my island, my secret was discovered and a few people came over and checked out everything. So I decided to switch places and head over to the regular game section. Most of it was a mess with games scattered around and flipped down (from people looking behind non-clearance titles). There were a handful of price cards with the clearance sale prices on there and I managed to find a Veggie Tales, Trapt (last one), and Juiced. I briefly checked the Xbox, 360, and GC sections before checking out.
In the end, the majority of people there were pretty nice and a couple of us made some small conversations. The best comment of the morning was a guy who said they should have made it like an Easter Egg hunt. They hide all the clearance games throughout the store and we hunt for them.
So to the 18 gamers (at least a handful of CAG's I know for sure) at the Mira Mesa store in San Diego, CA, congrats on your finds and sorry for your not finds. Hope everyone got something they wanted, even if it wasn't the ever elusive Oblivion CE.
i'll be checking out the best buy outside of mid river's mall shrike, i'll let you know if there's anything there, but i kinda doubt it. i haven't seen king kong, full auto or quake 4 there for at least a month.
here's to hoping though!

I agree. Over the past few years, Best Buy has become the worst place for video games, for both selection and price. I stopped asking for gift cards for the store and I rarely visit anymore unless there is an amazing deal on music CDs or something.

I hit up 3 BB's this morning
Rt1 woodbridge NJ - The only game I got here was Need for Speed Underground for the Xbox - $1.99 There was absolutely nothing else in the store.
Rt 18 - Picked up Serious Sam 2 and Tecmo classics - $4.99 and $1.99 This store was picked clean. They had Supermonkey ball for the cube and Nanobreaker for the PS2 but both rang up $9.99 so I passed .
Rt 22 Union NJ - Picked up 3 copies of Oblivion LE for the 360 - $9.99 each. I'm gifting a couple out to my friends. They had about 40 copies of this at about 1 PM. There was this guy who snagged like 10 copies and was rejected at the checkout and told 3 game limit. If you are in the area and hurry you might be able to score one. There was nothing else on the list in stock

My store (Seekonk, MA) got picked over, since, like Shipwreck, I saw a guy with a cart full of games heading toward the front... still, I managed to pick up the following:
PS2:
Killer7
Siren
Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2
Enthusia
Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift
Def Jam: Fight for NY
Trapt
Sly 2
GCN:
Madden 2005
Granted, Sly 2 and Trapt weren't 1.99, but I just couldn't pass them up at low prices :) I also picked up an extra copy of Xtreme Racer Drift, since I figured I could use that and Cabela as a present for my friend's birthday (...I won't ever be able to explain his gaming habits. :p) So, the total damage was 30.87 after tax. Not too bad for 20 minutes of hunting :)

For once, living in a backwater city paid off. Here in Mankato, MN, there was no one, and I mean NO ONE lined up waiting for the store to open other than me. THe employees were stunned that I went right to the videogame section and started picking off games that they had just finished marking down, and even more bowled over by the fact that I had a list. As I picked over there (sadly limited) stock and had my pick of what was available, I extolled the virtues of CheapAssGamer.com At about a quarter after ten (ten is when the store opens), three more people joined me in the section. One had learned about the sale from CAG, and the other two from FatWallet and a site I had never heard of before. The CAGer and I chatted pleasantly about what we were looking for, what we liked to play, and made recommendations. We were only buying one copy each per game and only for ourselves or for gifts for friends or relatives. The other two were grabbing five copies at a time of anything they could find and racing each other down the aisle. Even with the hoarders, there was still a lot left on the shelves after I left, including giant piles of all the verious Capcom and SNK fighting games (or whatever) that were on the list.
I purchased as gifts
DS: King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia, and Tak and the Great Juju Challenge (all for a friend's birthday), all at $2 a pop
PSP: Mercury and Outrun 2006 (for the same friend), at $2 a pop
PS2: Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1 and 2 (for my cousin's kids), again $2 each
For myself I purchased
GBA - Sigma Star Saga - $5
PS2 - Killer 7 - $2
XBX - Chronicles of Narnia ($2), The Warriors ($5), Ultimate Spiderman ($5), Spiderman 2 ($2), Chronicles of Riddick ($2), R: Racing Evolution ($2), Narc ($2)
Grand total: $47 after tax. A damn good day if I do say so myself.
Now, as for Killer 7, my CAG friend recommended it to me (as I recommended Trapt to him), but I've heard it's wonky, screwy, and convoluted. I would be glad to trade this to someone for Psychonauts, Kingdom Hearts CoM, GTA: San Andreas, Four Swords Adventures, or Worms on PSP or NDS.
I might also be willing to return to the store for something people wanted that they couldn't find at their store, since mine seemed to have about 10% of the titles on the list.

So that's what all those 18-25 year old guys were standing in line for?
It's funny. I'm a gamer, but I don't exactly fit the visual 'mold' that I saw these gamers who were in line at the BB in Colma this morning;
Long hair, baggy pants, a cell phone and a set of earbuds (one in each ear)
Yes, they all looked like that and yes, they all did NOT know each other, but now that I've discovered that they were all there for these clearance games, I have a feeling that most, if not all of them didn't get one thing to buy, because they wandered around aimlessly, searching the PS2, PSP, XBox, 360, DS and NGC shelves with no games to be had.
However, I walked away with what I wanted and I got a pretty damn good discount (a surprise to me).
I wanted to buy "V for Vendetta" 2-disc edition for $9.99. They had tons on the special sale shelf. I also picked up some other movies which I had been waiting to purchase for $9.99, and ended up picking up 7 DVDs total.
I go to the cashier, have him scan in the DVDs then he gives me a total; About $76.XX . I pull out my credit card, about to swipe it, when the cashier then says, "that's a pretty good deal! half off" The total was then adjusted to about $42.XX. I swiped my card and left the store in a hurry after graciously thanking the cashier.
After looking at the receipt, there's apparently a 'secret' deal going on where you pretty much buy one $9.99 movie and you get a $9.99 movie for free. So, I paid for 4 DVDs and got three for free. If you do the math, that's about $5.50 a DVD.
What a deal. :)

Went to the Frisco, TX Best Buy right at opening and there were about eight other guys there for the sale as well. All the 360 stuff was already picked clean but found several Xbox and PS2 titles. There were some $4.99 titles for the DS but all the $1.99 stuff was long gone. PSP and GBA stock was pretty scant too.
Although I didn't find the real gems I wanted (absent Killer 7 or Ninja Gaiden) it was actually a pleasant experience as the other shoppers for the sale were limiting themselves to one title each and we would point out new finds as we came across them to the other guys.
Best Buy had actually premarked several of the titles and grouped them at the start of each console's section. Several employees also came over and started handing out empty baskets to those of us who were holding onto a bunch of games. This Best Buy actually seemed excited by the rush of people and were willing to help out.
Here's my very mediocre haul of ten games:

Marc Ecko's Getting Up $1.99
Ninja Gaiden $1.99

Legends of Wrestling $1.99
Suffering Ties that Bind
Dead to Rights II $1.99
The Warriors $4.99

I drove over an hour to get to the nearest BB and got there 20 minutes after they opened. After looking forever and not finding anything, I saw an employee with several papers and a hand scanner. I asked if it was the list of $2 markdowns to which he replied, "that is totally false. We haven't even carried most of the games on that list for a long time." I saw him scan a couple games that were on the list and they came up full price. He said the store would be posting a sign in front saying this "sale" is a hoax. What gives?
I'm looking to get Ninja Gaiden, Suffering Ties that Bind, and WWE Day of Reckoning 2.

I am only 15, but I made a list of about 14 games and had my dad go to BB for me. I hope he found at least a couple (I want FF:CC and FE the most). Luckily, I live in a city of about 40000 that really doesn't know about these things, so I should get a lot. I mean, last time, I found Radiata Stories for $5 about a week after it was set out. I didn't even know about it.

Hit my local BB a few minutes before 10 AM to find an acquaintance standing @ the front gate. I asked him if he should be @ work and he replied that he called work to say he was having car problems, but would be in shortly. Once the gate opened we made our way to the game section, only to find a small bin with some clearance games. Nothing had been marked and neither one of us had brought a list, so we both immediately called our wives to see if they were near a computer. No luck. So we grab a few games that we're interested in and find the nearest BB employee with a price gun to scan the games for us. Low and behold they come up @ the $1.99 & $4.99 prices. So we kindly ask the employee to start scanning games for us and we must have drove him insane because he found the sheets with the price stickers for the sale and handed them to us. We split the stack and started going through what they had in stock, asking each other once we found something of interest if the other one was interested. Sadly for us it looked as though some BB employees had pulled the X360 games as well as a few other good games. I did end up with......
Soul Calibur II (GC)
Mega Man X Collection (GC)
Advance Wars Dual Strike (DS)
I also picked up these if anyone is interested....
Psychonauts (XBX)
Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects (XBX)
Final Fantasy XI Treasures of Ahi Urhgan (PS)
I might even part with the Advance Wars Dual Strike if anyone is interested.
I did pass on some games, Top Spin (PS), Ratchet & Clank GC (PS) & X-Men Legends (GC), but I might go back and see if anything might have magically showed up. My friend picked up a dozen or so games, singles of games all for himself.
Edit: I just my receipt and realized that I received 20% off on half my games. Anyone else notice this?

My Best Buy (West 23rd St in NYC) = total wipeout!
I went right after class and they had nothing left on the list. Lol, there were over a dozen ppl from what I saw searching for whatever they could find with their lists out. We were all the late comers though. I saw one person with a couple of games, another had about five. I found GTA: SA and Nightmare Before Christmas for PS2, but I already have GTA: SA and I put Nightmare back. I really wanted MGS3: Sub.
I overheard a customer and an employee talking and the employee said ppl were lined up outside before the doors opened. They rushed in and bought crap loads of games, like 10+ each. Damn >_<
I wish I would've known about this sale sooner. Oh well...

I was able to snag:
Lunar: Dragon Song (NDS)
Drill Dozer: (GBA)
I stopped by on my way to work for my 11am start time today (pretty convenient, eh?) and I walked in right at about 10am. Like some yuppy douchebag, I exported the list to my iPod's notes folder since I didn't want my laptop up to hook up to a printer last night. Soon after arriving, I had the two games above in my posession. I was surprised to see I was the only one there looking for games at first, but within five minutes, I was in competition with the smelliest basement dweller I had ever seen. He STUNK! As though 10am was the break of dawn or something like that, this guy looked like he was in pyjamas with his ratty-ass t-shirt and stained gray sweat pants from which he produced his scrawled notes. He asked if I had the last copy of Lunar, and when I said yes, I think he actually [I]farted. The stale stench of B.O. took a different form and I was actually repelled away.
He walked over to the GameCube display and threw his arms out to the side in a display of utter dismay to see there was little to choose from. I hate to judge, because were it not for my job, own home, fiancee and self-respect, I'm probably just nine missed showers away from being like that, myself. I also know there's a difference between a good deal and enabling some weird addiction. Again I hate to judge, but man, I can't help but laugh at some of these dudes.

Shrike, do you know if anyone has had any luck at the Brentwood store? I was thinking about checking there on my way home... Not that I've heard. Just what I know from the SoCo store (as it's in my backyard) and what thabizzle told me about Bridgeton (which is close to my work). I may swing by Fenton or Crestwood on the way home, though I don't expect anything. Mid Rivers Mall and Chesterfield are outside my normal patterns of places to go these days, though they usually have heavy traffic for sales like this. Fairview Heights, no clue at all.

Went to Irvine (Lake Forest) BB. They had PS2 DBZ Budokai 3 and that's it. I saw two people with lists and one with some mobile electronics device that probably had a list on its screen. One of the list guys eventually asked an employee if they had any clearance games, since there was nothing outside DBZ. He pointed to an encap with PSP Pinball and one other thing. This was 10am, at store opening.
Then went to Tustin Marketplace BB. They have a lot of specially marked games there, but nothing special. There were 2 people with lists, and some others milling around. The two with lists had a few games, but nothing special -- Poker, some GBA games. There was PS2 Poker for 1.99 and DS Sprung for 1.99, but that was it.
I didn't find a single game at BB today. However, I did really well. I got:
Batman, Batman Returns, Million Dollar Baby, and Magnolia at BB for $20
PSP Bloodhounds for $11.21 at Circuit City
Wii Elebits for $32 (used) at GS, after coupon and Edge
DS Monopoly/Yahtzee/Boggle/Battleship for $20 used at GS
and PSP Medieval Resurrection for $9.98 at Target.

I made it to the Anchorage, AK store about 11 am this morning. They were still stocking the shelves, believe it or not. Very little there anyway. None of the GBA games. The gamecube section only had maybe 10 titles total, nothing released earlier than 2005. It wasnt that things were picked over, they just didnt have any of the 'older' titles anymore.
And when I asked about the clearence games they had one for DS, Ridge Racer, and that was it.
The only thing I did pick up was a Greatest Hits copy of Prince of Persia 3, which rang up for $4.99.
I love it when I asked the guy if this would ring up at a 'clearance' price, he said "If you think $4.99 is a clearance".
None of the spiderman games, no jak games, no mario games, no crash tag team racing, zilch. Had a drag racing ps2 game for $1.99
Pretty disapointing but I'm glad I even knew about it.
Thanks CAG!

Nothing for me at the Liberty Missouri store. The shelves were more bare than I have ever seen them for a BB store.
How did everyone do that "preordered" the clearance games? Were you able to price adjust ok?
Wow, what a difference there can be for different parts of a metro area. I went out to 3 of the 4 Best Buys in my area yesterday and got several things - a few at each (and stupidly passed up things like VP Lenneth). I was able to price adjust those today, no problem. I went out again today around 11-12 and went to 2 of the stores. Many of the same things I saw yesterday were still there, plus some things I passed up before but snagged now since I didn't have to deal with price adjusting. At one store (near the Portland airport) I overheard some guy talking about CAG - wonder if it was a regular? If so, you just beat me to the games and had several in a basket and there was another guy you were talking to that had a bunch (this was around 11:30 probably).
Then I decided to hit the 4th store (Beaverton, OR) - where I didn't go yesterday. I got there around 12:30 and an employee spotted my list right away. He said they had nothing left and when they opened in the morning there were 50 people in line and they were all pretty pissed that they had very few clearance titles anyway. Man, what a difference from that store to the others though. Like I said, the other 2 look like they had barely been touched (the VP Lenneth was missing, as well as some games the 2 guys snagged but much of what I saw early Sunday was still there). I know to avoid that area in the future as there must be a high per capita SD and FW population
Anyway, managed to snag the following:
:ds:
Madagascar
Open Season
Shrek Super Slam
:gc:
Shrek Super Slam
:360:
Full Auto
NHL 2K6
College Hoops 2K6
Moto GP 06

Sega Classics Collection
Madden 07 HoF edition
Prince of Persia Two Thrones
:psp:
Gradius Collection
Daxter
Popolocrois
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
Mercury
Gripshift
2006 FIFA World Cup
Only Shrek Super Slam for GC and Full Auto were amongst my top priorities. Besides Oblivion CE I was really hoping for King Kong, RR6, Xbox Republic Commando and several of the other GC and DS games.
I hope everyone remembered to bring the $5 off Gamepro coupons with them today ;).

Although there were a few games that I wanted on the list, all they really had were PS2 games (Severe lack of XBOX and 360 games, along with not that many quality DS games), and I made out with this:
:ps2:
Godfather: Limited Edition (1.99)
Def Jam: FFNY (1.99)
Marc Ecko's Getting Up (4.99)
Both DJ and ME were on my list (Didn't get ME for XBOX, although they had it and it was at the 1.99 pricepoint, because it isn't backward compatible with 360) and I was so shocked to see Godfather Limited Edition for 2 bucks, that I just said fuck it and got it.
Didn't have much money to spend either, but I really feel like I made out fantastically.

Soul Caliber 2 xbx
NHL 2k6 360 x 2
Nanobreaker ps2 x 4
GTA SA ps2
and a bunch of crappy gba games for 1.99 (supposedly)
so when we go to the register to ring these items up, they all rang up at full price execpt for the 2 NHL 2k6s for 360. WTF. this on top of me finding out that madden 07 psp wasnt on the list. i felt so stupid having all those games in my basket and the lady rang up all of them and i only ended up buyin 2. everyone behind me was sure giving me a stupid look.
bright side, i only spent 5 bucks and got a 360 game.

Well, I went to my local BB (Portland, ME) and it was pretty disappointing. There weren't a lot of games that were left.
I picked up:
Duel Masters (GBA) - $1.99
ESPN 2K5 (XBOX) - $1.99
Enthusia (PS2) - $1.99 <---(was actually looking for this for my step-dad)
What was weird was Duel Masters and Enthusia had labels over their UPCs that made them ring up at $9.99 and I only got them for $1.99 through a manager override because they had tabs that had $1.99 price tags.
Also, used a $5 off RZ coupon for this purchase and the total ended up being only $1.02 after tax.
I didn't know if anyone else had problems with generic labels being put over the UPC codes or what? That kinda makes this whole thing kinda YMMV...
Also, I found a copy of Rave Master (GC) for $9.99 and I used the $5 off a GC game to get it for $4.99! :)

I'm quite happy with my haul as well. Went at about 5:30 pm and was able to get a few good games that I was interested in playing.
Still a bunch of ps2 games left with multiple copies and probably more on the list that I wasnt interested in. ( I only looked for the games I wanted to play and my list of games to look for was fairly small. Although xbox/360/GC was cleaned out.)
Digimon Rumble Arena 2 ps2
Urban Reign ps2
Virtua fighter 4 EVO ps2
Full spectrum warrior :10 hammers ps2
Dead to Rights 2 Xbox
After couple RCs I only had to shell out a couple bucks in the end. I have to say I got more of a thrill out of reading about other people's adventures then getting cheap games. Thanks for the fun BK!

I went to the Orland Park, IL store, and there was nothing marked on sale. I noticed two games that were on the list, but I didnt want them so I didnt check to see if they would ring up at the reduced price.
Here's my final loot:
:gba:
Dr Mario x Puzzle League
Final Fantasy IV: Advance
Mario Party Advance

Jak 3
Metal Gear Solid 3: SubsistenceRatchet & ClankRomancing SagaSly Cooper
:psp:
Ape Escape

Go! Sudoku
MegaMan Maverick Hunter X
Midway Arcade Treasures
Monster Hunter Freedom
Popolocrois
Tiger Woods 2006
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
Worms
:xbox:
Brothers in Arms
True Crime: New York City
:360:
NHL 2K6
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
Total came out to $143.77. I had to price-adjust 6 of those cause I had bought them earlier (3 intentionally, 3 unintentionally), but I didn't get any grief from the CS rep. She even checked games on the receipts that I wasn't pointing out.
One note about the Go! Sudoku: There were a billion left in the register area. However, those aren't going to ring up as $1.99 because the stores put special $9.99 UPC's on there. Somebody brave can try taking them off or asking the cashier to do so.
I guess Austin isn't too heavy in CAG/FW/SD/etc people cause it was pretty easy to find stuff. Even about an hour ago, you could still find the odd $1.99 game here and there. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the four games that I really wanted (Oblivion, FFXI, Daxter, UG&G), so I might end up trying to trade some of what I got.

After reading about some of the BBs that refuse to sell the clearance games, I wonder if some of them have manually changed the prices for the sale games themselves.
I can't think of any other reason tha t they aren't ringing up the same as everyone else's stores.
Have you guys tried buying them at their full price and then getting an adjustment at another BB? Maybe it's just 1 store out of the district that is not going along with the sale.

Yes, most copies of these games were restickered with different UPC codes because they were a new set of "cheap" games they bought before Christmas and (mostly) put into displays by the registers. Us Kmart clearance veterans are very familiar with this as the same problem occurs there. Look carefully at the back of the game - if it has a stickered UPC then it will probably not ring up on clearance. These are different stock than the clearance games which have been sitting around for much longer (thus why they are more scarce).
As 3QGojo reports above, if you remove the UPC stickers to reveal the true UPC they will ring up on sale. Of course, this is very YMMV and is not something you should do on your own. If the employees tell you to or offer to do it, then by all means go for it. I'm guessing that all these games "not ringing up right" or from stores "not participating in the sale" or where the stores have "changed prices themselves back to MSRP" are all really the same small set of games that you were MORE LIKELY to find as they had these stickers and thus weren't bought by anyone else. I saw a stack of these by the register at one store where everyone had brought them up and then declined to buy them when they didn't ring up as expected.
One wierd thing happened to me - one BB had nearly everything marked. However, the Sega Classics Collection tag still said $9.99. They had about 8. I noticed that 6 were restickered and 2 were the original UPC. I bought those two and they rang up $1.99 as expected.
The one exception there is GTA:SA which rings up $19.99 without any UPC change. People are reporting in the other thread that the wrong SKU was entered into Best Buy's (central) computer and the game is *supposed* to be $1.99 but rings up wrong as a result (it is on the original list). I bought 2 to price match and of course it didn't work. I was going to return them but maybe I'll wait a few days anyway - they might clear that up.

At most stores, the games with different UPC codes in a different locations (e.g., up by the register) are usually on consignment from a different vendor (often returns or overstocks put out by a closeout company who got them cheap), and are usually not part of any store sales.

I don't know if you really meant to say me or not. What I was saying above was that I managed to get the correct prices on a few titles that had UPCs over the bar codes because they had actual tabs behind the games themselves that said "game title" $1.99. So basically when they rang up incorrectly I said "That's not what the price sticker says on the shelve." I showed someone the prices on the shelves and they gave me the lower price, because otherwise it's really false advertising to say hey this game is $1.99 and then have it ring up as $9.99 when the only price I had to go by was the one on the tab since there was no sticker on the games themselves.

Ah, I see... They were too clever for that at my Best Buy and did not change the shelf tags for things that had new UPC stickers over the old ones (thus making those ring up at $9.99 or $14.99). They really shouldn't have sold you those ones with the stickers (and I mean UPC stickers not price stickers) as those are different stock than the clearance games WITHOUT new UPC stickers on them. But, as you say, if they have a shelf tag noting the lower price then they should honor it. I had thought you said they removed the UPC stickers for you.
Edit - looked back at my post and I only referred to you as you had the issue with the stickers over the UPC making them ring up higher. My reference to removing them was to someone else (who said the employees let him do this). At the Best Buys I went to all the "clearance" games with stickers over the UPC also had giant $9.99 or $14.99 stickers on the front of the game so it would be hard to convince them to sell for less. Sorry, a bit confusing there - this whole sale has been very confusing ;).

Like others, I found Nanobreaker at $9.99.
The manager didn't want to manually enter the title, and it didn't scan as a generic title either. Funny thing is it rang up as Front Lane 3 - a totally different game, though I never heard of it.
Even if it was pre-Christmas stock, isn't that a poor business practice to have an incorrect SKU in the system? How in the world would someone return Nanobreaker for whatever reason, if the receipt shows a completely different title?

All the cheap pre-Christmas clearance games ring up that way. It isn't a game title - it is a reference to the displays set up near the front registers (or "front lane"). One Piece Pirate's Carnival (which I just bought last night) comes up the same way. That must be the generic $9.99 UPC sticker they are using for these games. They are not supposed to be with the rest of the games but in special displays up on the front of the store near the candy and whatnot.

Front Lane is a generic term for games found at the front of the stores by the checkout lanes.

How long is this "sale" supposed to be? or is it just thier new prices till they are gone.
Being the walmart where i work matched the prices on the best buy list (after calling to verify each one) I was thinking of hitting them again to score some more copies so i can use em as trades.

so wait,
walmart is willing to price match the best buy's clearance? How do you do this? print the list & ask a walmart employee to call & verify each games actual price?
I thought they don't if it's out of stock & such.....
Since my walmart had TONS of Mario Party 7 as well as others.... - would definately love to snag this!!

Meh, I didn't know. Nanobreaker was with the rest of the PS2 games, unmarked and on a shelf in the rear of the store between PS2 titles and strategy guides. I checked the store's front displays and they didn't have any copies of Nanobreaker there.
I just remember NB shelved there for the longest time. Some BB employee probably threw the titles there since he couldn't find the placard with the other games.

Well i work there so i don't know if that helped me, Also NOBODY wanted to do it but i kept on them and had the person at the service desk call and verify the ones that they had that where on the list.
Then she called electronics and to;d them what ones i could get and for what price.
They did tell the service desk person that a few of the list items where normal priced even tho they where on the list.
And also told her that most where not listed in thier computers any longer but being BB said "But if we had em in stock they would be $1.99 blah blah.
so i got em. the electronics guy selling them to me did not wanna sell em for that price, I could tell by the way he kept stalling while trying to scan em in and price adjust em.
So i would say to take your list and tell the worker that best buy has these games listed for this price.
And being it's not really a sale and it's just thier new price they should do it.
Some stores might say no because there is no paper ad.. but keep on em and say "It's not a sale..it's just thier new price".
Working for Walmart for about 6 years i know they HATE to price match because it shows they really don't have the lowest prices.
In fact CC and BB always beat us and we price match thier ad's quite often.

It's cool, I just wanted people to know I wasn't removing UPC codes. I didn't get much from this clearance, but I picked up a few titles for really cheap and tgat's all I was really hoping for.
