View Full Version : I love Ridge Racer (ie Ridge Racers)!

Picked this up back in November once it hit Greatest Hits. And wow. I completely love it. I sold my copy of R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 back when the PSP launched because I figured I'd pick this up, and it would be even better...and it is.
I love the new nitrous mechanic, where basically you WANT to drift as much as possible around corners to build up boosts. The control is just fantastic-it seems way better than R4 (which is saying something)-though it might just be that the new mechanic has forced me to learn the drift system better than I used to.
One thing I've found interesting is that I actually have the easiest time drifting with the cars with "Mild" drift. Like basically there's regular, mild, and dynamic. Theoretically dynamic is supposed to drift more I guess, and be easier to keep at full speed drifting. But I have a horrible time with them. I'm way better with the regular cars, and once I tried mild, I switched to them for good. A lot of times I sail through a series of twists in an almost continuous drift with those suckers. A few courses I've built up nitro faster than I can burn it :D
I have to get really nitpick-y to complain about anything, but here goes:
-It uses some courses from Ridge Racer 1-5, which I think is why it's called "Ridge Racers" in Japan. I'd love it if it told you what game a track is from when you're entering it though.
-The music is really good, but I don't like it quite as much as R4.
-The graphics are really good, but it's not pushing the Playstation Portable as much as R4 did the Playstation (it looks better of course, but then it's a whole generation newer hardware). Of course it's a launch game versus something really late in the Playstation's life cycle. I wonder what Namco will be able to do with the PSP three or four years from now...
-I could actually see around with online on this, but I don't think it has any.
Told ya they were nit-picky "complaints" :D
I've got to say again, the PSP had an amazing launch library. Probably the best since the SNES. I'd buy a PSP just for Ridge Racers (at least at a $20 price point), and Metal Gear Acid was awesome, Luminies was good (for a puzzle game), Dark Stalkers, Wipeout, etc...
I'm probably going to get creamed on the Pro tour, but even still I've gotten my money's worth from the first tour :)

The PSP's launch lineup was good... it's just that the system didn't get anything else for like a year.
Aaanyway, I personally love the Ridge Racer series, but I sold the PSP version... why? Because I'm planning to import the European version of Ridge Racers 2 which includes the tracks from R4 in addition to everything that was in the original game on the PSP.

Eh, it was more like six months (pretty much like the dead period for the DS).

Is it otherwise the exact same game? I think our "Ridge Racer" has like one track from R4 (according to the manual), but I'd love more.
Hope they do a real sequel on the PSP at some point. Hopefully Ridge Racer 7 will hit $20 in a year or too also so I can actually afford it :)

Otherwise? yeah, it's the same game... they added some new music too and some new cars I believe. But the fact that they have R4's tracks which I feel are the best in the series makes it a must buy for me. And yes, they only had 1 track from R4 in the original version.

Too bad they didn't just release Ridge Racer 2 as 1. I do really love the tracks from R4.
I'm messing around with the music playback mode, and just realized they have at least some music from R4 in there. I recognize Naked Glow and Your Vibe. Movin' in Circles too! From Shooting Circles I think it's called, the last track in R4 :D I Love that song.

I'm probably not remembering everything that was actually a *launch* title on the SNES. Like I was thinking Final Fantasy 4 and Actraiser and Castlevania 4, etc. were launch titles, but I guess they weren't.
I'm thinking Sim City was though? If so, those four games still represent a phenomenal launch IMO. I guess the Dreamcast and 360 launches were solid too.

Just got my copy of Ridge Racer 2 in the mail today. I already love it to death! Just looking at the layout of the world tour mode it looks like it'll take forever to get thru it all!

It is omg it is. A lot of it is burning through the same/similar courses over again. The class changes are defintely noticiable with the speed boost but it get so silly that the game keeps the car on the track so instead of you going into a head on collision into a wall you will magically jerk back into the right direction.
I like dynamic cars. I shall try a standard car today though (in class 6 on the Pro Tour now) and see if that makes things better. I know I've passed other cars going in effing reverse or hitting jumps with the car turned 90 degrees to the left. I can still win but my shit be slidin' yo.
So yeah this game kicks all sorts of ass and moves a lot faster than I imagined it would before. The jumps and some of the longest curves to drifts are so drool worthy. Oh and the graphics? I'm so used to choppy Burnout that this is like a breath of fresh air. And hell, the enviroments look so crisp in clean, they really capture ocean vistas and city scapes like no other.
BUT. Duel Mode is damn near superflous. They could have easily let you change the number of racers on the track from 12 to 2 but eh, no. Survival is neat but that's nothing new.

This is why I love CAG... I've never picked up any Ridge Racer for any platform, but know it's a great game... just ordered from Play Asia for $23 shipped. Can't wait to get started on those 42 tracks!

I stink at the Pro Tour. :D I'm only through the third set of races. I always have to race that last race where you have to place first again and again...although it's fun enough that so far I just keep doing it until I get it.
When I first started racing these class 4 machines I thought they were crazy fast. Now I seem to have gotten used to them again. You really can tell a difference between classes though.

When you are choosing a track, behind the track layout, look at the background on the screen and it should display the logo of the game it was from

Neat! I didn't realize that. I'll have to look for it.
And darn it! I'll get that Pac Man! I'll get him!
I'm so disappointed you can't use any car you get in any race. I want to use that Demon car in class six races, or my class six cars against class 2 or something :D
This game has been well worth the money. Geez did the PSP have a great launch line up :)

I got to a point where I can't catch the lead car. I've tried different vehicles and building boost but it doesn't seem to work. I need to finish 1st to move on. Any tips?

For some reason I had a heck of a time with the Class 5 races and that Age car. No problems with the class 6 racer though.
I'm finishing up the "extra" races. About halfway through now. Can't wait to see what the "special prize" is going to be.

This game is definitely a keeper.

Is the Rally X car available in RR2? I at gamefaqs that in RR you have to get a really high score in the Rally X minigame (plus completing some tour) to score the car.
Is it still in the sequel?
