View Full Version : Third Annual CAG NCAA March Madness Tourney Contest (Winning Scenarios In Post #203)

The First (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43693)and Second (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87435)Annual March Madness contests have gone very well with both going down to the wire in determining the winners. I've got a few games to add to the prize pool, along with maybe a few more that I may pick up later this week, and maybe some donated games from generous CAGs (if you'd like to donate, please PM me). This contest will be conducted through Yahoo's Tourney Pick-'em set-up, which streamlines the process and just lets everyone worry about their picks.

Current Prize Pool
Beyond Good and Evil (PS2)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (GC)
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Xbox)
Neo Contra (PS2)
Lunar Knights (DS)
GTA Vice City Stories (PS2)
Dead or Alive Ultimate (Xbox) (mint)
Metroid Prime (GC) (mint) - schuerm26
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC) - schuerm26
128MB Memory Stick Duo Entertainment Pack (Includes 128mb MS Duo Stick, MS Duo Adapter, Sonic Stage 3.0 Software, and 10 Free Downloads at Sony Connect.) (PSP) - FFMooglestar
Jak and Daxter Trilogy DVD - FFMooglestar
The Warriors (Xbox) - killswitch64

Right now, the tourney itself is still being set up and will be set in stone on Selection Sunday (check out ESPN or whoever else that's doing coverage). However, in the meanwhile, you can sign up and join the CAG group to reserve your spot. The deadline to get your picks in is five minutes before the first game starts on Thursday, March 15.

Just head to here (http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men) to create your pick set and then go here (http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men/register/joinprivategroup) and enter the group ID# (52297) and password (cheapyd) to sign up and join the group. The only thing I require of you is to post here if your pick set name or yahoo ID doesn't match your CAG ID so that I know it's you. If I see people who haven't done this come Wednesday night (March 14), you will be booted. This year, it seems that Yahoo has increased the amount of people a group can hold to 250 people, so I think we'll have enough for anyone that wants to join. If we do reach that total, I'll create a new group for the rest of the CAGs that want to enter.

I will probably pick winners the same way I did last year: the top 3 scorers will get prizes. Depending on how many prizes there are, the top winner will get first pick on the list, then second place, and third place gets what's left.

Feel free to chat about the tourney, your team's chances, and all that fun stuff once you sign up. If you have any questions post here.

Also, keep your posts civil and mature. If you can't do that, then don't post in this thread.

Nope, they are my favorite to play Ohio St. in the championship game.
Thats my pick in my main bracket (OH St.). After looking at theentire bracket, and picking some of the most possible upsets, I had TAM beating them in the Elite 8;that's the only scenario in which I believe that OH St will lose on their road to the Championship game. Unless they get Georgetown in the Final 4 that is.

mr ryles
03-11-2007, 11:10 PM
I've got florida beating georgetown in the finals.

My final four consists of florida, kansas, georgetown, and texas A&M.

xbltheshadow
03-11-2007, 11:14 PM
That's a very good final 4. That is one of the more logical ones actually. The only problem I have is Kansas, it seems to me that they have one too many upset chances for me to solidify them as a final 4 team.

I badly wanted to pick Kansas over Florida, but I think Florida's experience will push them past.

I don't think I have any 1 seed making it, for now.

And as of now it consists of Wisconsin vs Southern Illinois and Louisville vs Georgetown in the Final Four. With SIU and Louisville playing for the Championship and SIU winning. Just a rough guess for now.

Also, if I didn't state it already, same name as here for the brackets.

You can have up to five different brackets, but each one can only be associated to one group. So you could have one for the CAG contest group, one for your favorite team's(s') group, and any other group you see. He can only have one bracket in the group unless he's trying to cheat by having separate usernames, which I doubt he's doing.

The schedule says that the earliest games start just after noon EDT, so adjust that for your region and show up a little earlier for the pre-game stuff.

As for the pool, I have a few brackets that I'm not able to link to CAGs:

Shormen - jrzsure01
CAGBrack - coitcannon
go gators - cheezhead430

Please let me know who you are, either by PM, a post here or in the pool, or by changing your current bracket name (go to My Bracket, then Edit Bracket Info).

I'll be posting this in the pool's message boards, as well. If I don't see a response, I'll be forced to boot you guys at 6 AM on the west coast (9 AM EST). Feel free to sign back in if you're booted as long as you fix that problem.

Hah, following Pac-10 hoops all year I knew WSU was pretty good (and despite how much I detest them I picked them to go pretty far - fucking Taylor Rochestie sounds like some two-bit porn star name).

I also knew Stanford was NOT that good and picked against them.

So far only Bobby Knight has screwed me over. The rat bastard - knew I should have picked against him. When are him and Lute Olsen going to retire so I don't have to look at them any more? Huh?

Anyways, glad I entered the pool as it is the only thing that will keep my interest with all these detestable teams in the tourney this year ;).

Maybe you can tell my favorite team isn't anywhere close to being in this year?

Edit - Looks like GW is going to screw me over too. So much for that upset pick.

WOOOO I lost already

Picked bobby knights team. Lost
Picked STanford LOST

I guess it could been worse, Maryland finally won and i had them gonig all the way to the final 4 that would been bad if they lost lol

my mistake i had Maryland going to the final 8 (getting beat by wisconsin)

best of luck to all that are still in the running im totally out of it now i think

what is going to kill me is i had george washington going to the elite 16 losing to georgetown... i think i got this team mixxed up with george mason (or whatever that team that made it to the final 4 last year)

i forgot to fill out my brackets till 1130am and just picked them quickly)

my final 8

maryland vs wisconsin (wis wins)
kansas vs ucla (ucla wins)

UCLA wins over Wis (makes it to final)

north carolina vs georgtown (g.town wins)
Ohio st vs texas am (ohio state wins)

Ohio state beats Gtown

Ohio state beats ucla in title match

as many picked the same teams in the final 4 I be lucky to end 50th

No you aren't, have you seen how yahoo scores it? The later rounds are worth more a lot more points than the first round, so even if you're down by a bunch after the first round, you can easily make it up later by just getting an extra game here and there. If someone gets the winner of the tournament right, it almost guarantees that they'll win.

Also, thanks to frisky and everyone who donated prizes.

yes you get more pts in the later rounds but in the later rounds almost everyone picks the same teams so it doesnt really matter

If anybody here uses Yahoo widgets, HP released (http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/hpcourtside/madextras.html) a nice one just for the tourney that lets you put a few games on a watch list to easily keep an eye on how they're going.

However, my complete hosing of the East bracket has put me down in the 11/16 group (near the bottom). I picked Marquette, GW, and Texas Tech there. And in the other brackets I missed Gonzaga and BYU (they both lost). Damn Gonzaga and their damn NW hype-machine...

I'm in good shape, though, as NONE of my Sweet 16 teams have been eliminated yet. I don't think that has EVER happened to me in 10-15 tourney pools I've been in over the years.

Remember, getting everything perfect at this point is nearly meaningless - when it counts is the last few rounds. I did pretty horribly early on last year but by picking UCLA and Florida to make the final four I was able to snag 3rd place.

I'm tied with you, slidecage (and a bunch of others) in 25th place (I'm singling you out because you said you were toast yesterday). But that's only 3 points from 2nd (and 4 from 1st). Ain't no one won this thing yet ;).

The way I've always done it, and how it's outlined in the OP, is that the top 3 scorers will get a crack at the prize pool. Unless I get any more donations for prizes, the first place winner will get to pick six prizes, second place gets three, and the third place gets the remaining two.

Heh, I missed it (except for bits of the first half). Though I live in OR I'm no Ducks fan (nor Beavers fan for that matter). As far as I'm concerned, if Florida and UNC or Ohio State play in the final that is a total yawn-fest. I won't even bother watching. No drama or excitement there. UCLA only holds mild interest for me as they are a Pac-10 team, though I hate them with a passion so I'm conflicted there ;). I do have UNC winning the championship so I can still score points. If I could ever get this rumored scenario generator to work I could see if I even have a shot in the pool. I had 7 of the last 8 and 3 of the Final Four, but I still am out - a testament to my horrible first round. Really, it stems from the way the pool is scored, which is basically that it's almost impossible to win without picking the actual champion.

No complaint on this pool at all (thanks again for setting it up Frisky), but I do prefer scoring systems where the points don't double every round. Sportsline.com lets you set your own point system for the groups, which is nice. On the other hand, it doesn't have the sweet scenario generator.

I like pools where you get more points for picking upsets. For example, if you correctly picked a number 1 seed to win, you get 1 point plus the points for that round. If you correctly picked a number 16 seed, you would get 16 points plus the points for that round.

I like upset pools too, but the way I usually score it is to award a score based on the difference of the seeds when an upset occurs, and then have a round multiplier on top of that. So suppose a 16 beats a 1 in the first round - then the score awarded is 15 (15 x 1). If that same matchup happened in the second round (I know it's impossible) then a win by the 16 would give 30 points (15 x 2).

That rewards upsets so much that you could probably win just by picking all upsets even if all your teams were out by the third round. Another way would be to just give a fixed bonus per upset, like maybe the round score again (e.g. get an extra 2 points for upsets in the second round, etc).

Not even close. The multiplier ensures that later rounds are so valuable that you can't afford to lose high seeds (who are more likely to go farther). While there is some incentive to pick upsets early, you're out of the running in the later rounds if you eliminate the top seeds.

if yahoo has it right right now ranked 15th... how florida is just rolling over teams and ohio state almost knocked off twice already i doubt Ohio can take down florida

I'm with you there. Florida played pretty good, and UCLA got ripped off by a bunch of fouls; some cheap, some legitimate.

I've got a 50% chance of getting some stuff! Yay! \\:D/

Awesome! I won! Thanks for setting this up, Frisky.

I'm wondering, how do I choose my prizes? Should I just pm frisky with the six I want and a shipping address?

I got second and need the same info. And how many prizes do I get? Is it 6-4-2? So 6-4-1-1 since we had a third place tie? Or what?

swetooth9
04-03-2007, 07:05 PM
i thought yahoo determined a tie?

Cow_tipper
04-03-2007, 07:36 PM
Yeah, I think it gave Boston College FTW!!! the tiebreaker, because it has him listed as 3rd by himself, and Tyga listed as 4th, instead of showing them both as being 3rd, like it did earlier in the tournament before the tiebreaker.

yea, b/c i saw before when people were tied, their position numbers were actually teh same...for example, there were 2 10th place people before

Tyga24
04-03-2007, 08:04 PM
Yeah, it seems that the tiebreaker through Yahoo determined the order. Sucks to finish in 4th place the last two years (especially with as close as this years' was), but that's how it goes I guess. Thanks for the hard work Frisky and to all those that donated the games.

Cow_tipper
04-03-2007, 08:14 PM
Wow, you got fourth place last year too? That's really bad luck, especially with how close it was.

FriskyTanuki
04-03-2007, 09:39 PM
Congrats to our four winners (fuck Yahoo and their "tiebreaker," Tyga has the same score as swetooth)! I'll send out PMs shortly to the winners to let them choose their prizes so we can hopefully get the prizes sent out ASAP.
