Angband/Hack/Rogue, it's variants... they kick ass. More players need to experience these amazingly deep games.

But here's the problem: the learning curve for this game is insanely high and would be offputting for today's new or casual players.

Don't get me wrong... distinguishing a capital D from a small d was part of the charm, in 1983.

I haven't played Angband in a few years, but the last time my friend and I got back into it we were blown away as to how far it had come along and, well, advanced. It still absolutely kills Diablo in the depth department.

In addition to many wonderful gameplay enhancements, they developed a very cool tile-set for the game. Basically, very simple graphics. Instead of a 'w' you see a little (equivalent of a graphical 1-bit;) )worm. Very, very cool. And almost everything (we're talking hundreds upon hundreds of "tiles" were all redesigned.)

Frankly, I had a blast competing with myself in my own "Top 20 Hall of Heroes".

Could be a great online game. If someone could create, maybe even a little bit nicer, of tiles and port it.

Not sure how it could be done w/o a keyboard.

Those games were indeed fun.
