oh, and Markman or kainzero, how do u escape throws in Tekken?? I kno u push the punch button that corresponds to the throw your opponent (which I have absolutely no idea how the timing works), but I saw A LOT of ppl succeeding at throw escapes. during the tourney. I wonder if there's a trick to it, or if they are just extremely good and lucky at guessing yeah, you just press the opposite punch button. like if the opponent's left arm sticks out, you press your left punch. same with the right arm. if they both look like they're equally extended, press both punches. throw-centric characters like king, their throws are sometimes trickier to see, plus the escape window is smaller. the throw window begins right after the throw connects.

it's a lot of reflex and you need to train it a lot. it's tough, i can do it like 100% in practice mode but probably like 25% (if that) in real matches. and that was in my "prime," i haven't really played in a long time. real good players break a lot of throws though, it's a pretty essential skill.

you can sorta fuzzy guard throw escape, but not really. like if i see a move where the right arm extends, and i can't tell if it's a throw or not, i hit the punch button regardless after it "hits." if it's a regular move, it's blocked and your input won't go through because you're still in block-stun. if it's a throw and you guessed right on the throw input, you'll escape.

Thanks for the FOTNS vids Chacrana and Markman. I remember checking YouTube maybe last month or more for FOTNS match vids, no one had any up. Now I'm noticing this one guy has a crapton uploaded.

The game might be something I pick up down the line. I STILL haven't bought KOF XI, so I want to spend $65 on that first. Also I quit my cruddy video game retail job on the 9th, so I've been trying to be better with money right now.

I can confirm that your top 3 are all fantastic. KOF XI... obviously. I raved about that thing for months. Still love the game. Garou Battle Archives 2 -- seemingly perfect ports of the games... most importantly, they've aged really well. Real Bout 2 is still really enjoyable. I opened up Samsho Tenka yesterday and it ended up being much, much, much better than I expected. It just feels... different from SNK's other fighters. It's very well paced, has a shitload of characters, and the fighting mechanics just feel really good.

I just played a hell out a lot of Tekken 5 this weekend. After being disappointed with both the last two previous installments of the series (Tag and 4) I can say that this is the best entry since 3. Although I have to say, Tekken 3 is still the best Tekken ;)

I have Real Bout Special for Saturn and feel like I'd rather play that than Alpha 3.

As far as I can remeber they took out the 2nd plane for Real Bout 2, which is good, cause side-steping to the 2nd plane was what I hated the most about the Fatal Fury series. It broke up the action in gameplay and had no meaning.

I always thought Rick was a cool character. His play style remind me of Vanessa in KOF.

It depends on each throw... basic throws is probably like 10 frame window.

I'll look up the exact numbers later. I think it is 10 frames though.

happy 2 month anniversary to me and tekken!!

I won DR psp off ebay on Jan 22 and have learned me the game somewhat well!!

what I hate is I develop so many bad habits playing against psp AI since they're so susceptible to a lot of my attacks,

yet when I play against a human all my attacks straight up whiff, I still gotta learn how to poke well and find opportunities to use my favorite move (xiaoyu's df+2~1)

I wanna pick up a new character soon, tho I dont think I wanna try Lei. I'm thinkin either Yoshimitsu or Baek.

also I overheard over 60 ppl entered 3S ranbat O_o!!!! they're gonna seriously be there til like 4am

oh yeay Charanca u should change your boobs to tenjou tenge boobs.

that anime sucked too, but at least I was able to watch the whole thing

i haven't played in a while, but i remember using df+2~1 as a whiff punisher mostly. it doesn't push back as much as it did in 5.0, so you have to be careful when you use it. if it's blocked you get launched for free (-17?), i think. on the plus side, i think it also takes 17 frames to execute, so it's also one of your main punishers. don't quote me on the frames though...

poking... ff+3 is pretty safe and gives big damage on CH. 1,d+2 and df+1 variants are mids that allow you to put some pressure on. and of course, d+4 is the low poke of choice... remember you can do it in RDS and it spins you back around. you also have AOP d+4~3, ss+4, hyp 2, ff+1...

i think the most important thing to practice is defense, probably the reason why i was so terrible at tekken. learn to block lows as well as learn your best punishers, learn frames and what kinda options you have when you're at -1, -3, etc.

it took me a long time to get somewhat decent, just keep at it and keep playing real people =P i used to practice against the computer on TTT all day and i didn't learn anything applicable to fighting real people. above all, don't get caught in theory fighter... there's a point that you'll reach where you'll learn much more from getting experience by playing as opposed to reading more theory on the internet.

Frames are important, just for the fact knowing exactly how safe and what you get and what you don't get when things are blocked. It really helps in the end.

The dude who placed 2nd at tekken last week (ricky) doesnt kno any of that shit, he just knows how to play good they're good for planning out tactics. for example, if a move leaves you at -7, you know there's almost nothing you can do that will beat whatever the opponent can throw at you because evading movement (ss or bd) isn't fast enough and neither can you do a crush move in time, so you just have to block. if a move gives you +1 and you have a quick jab, you know that your jab can beat anything short of a crush move or a duck. you don't think of actual numbers, just your options in response that you learned from those numbers. it gives you a tangible definition to knowing how safe or unsafe you are, or how slow or quick certain moves are.

you never work with actual numbers in matches... but you derive strategies and practice them. a lot of it is already derived by other people, like punisher lists, followups to blocked moves, certain tactics for certain moves, so sometimes you don't even have to look up frames.

most of the time u see frame numbers is on fighting game boards, and it's usually ppl being hella pissy about them. For example, when GGX2 came out, ppl were crying about axl's frc was a 1-frame window. They used that mindset to try to pull the move off, and went back onto the boards complaining about how they couldnt do it (as well as gaping in awe whenever matchs vids show it). The reason they had a hard time is becoz they tried to picture the frame, they were discussing 'oh it's at the animation point where blah blah blah etc' whereas I didnt care about the window. I just practiced for the sake of practicing without knowing where exactly the frame was. Thru trial and error I finally got it, and got it down pretty well too. Furthermore, my play style with both him and Anji uses my understanding of blockstun and priority to my advantage. I play rather offensively with them, but I know that I am safe.

another example is playing Alex in 3S during offensive wake-up. You can stuff your opponent as they're getting off the ground with a standing fierce. His fierce has a lot of start-up frames, I do not know the exact number, but I know the move well enough to time it right.

so yeah, the idea of frame advantage is great, obviously it's what gets u the edge in competition. But reading numbers arent going to help you as much as actual experience where you learn firsthand what works and doesnt.

a lot of knowledge and little experience won't get you very far.
a lot of experience and a little knowledge will get you a little bit farther.

but combine and balance them both, and you have limitless potential.

Alright, I've been out of this thread for a while. Probably because I haven't had much time to sit down and play a fighting game recently. But I can say that I recently got my PS3 hooked up with an HDMI cable, I play Tekken, and it looks like a completely different game! Not really, but it looks damn good.

And Rolento, that site you posted is pretty sweet. I found the belt buckle section, and there are some pretty sweet ones.

Alright guys I'm levaing for Tokyo on Wednesday and I'll be there for the next month. I'm super hyped!!!! I'll still be on CAG so let me know if I should look out for anything, plus I'll keep you guys updated on my adventure.

I trained hard on Virtua Fighter 4 with my HORI SCII stick. Hopfully that's enough to take on the competition in Japan on VF5. I'll try to get videos or pics, if you guys care. I jus gotta first discover what moves give me trouble, coz in regards to 3S I cant think of any!!! i don't think frames matter that much in 2d compared to 3d. so in regards to 3S there isn't too much, if any framedata you need to learn.

things i've learned would be like... chun gets free super after blocked shoto sweep. or if chun blocks ken's SA3, follow up with throw or super, but not c.mk into super because they can counter out of it.

i think 3S is way more of a spacing game than a frame game. and of course there are tricks/combos you gotta learn how to get out of, like alex's heel stomp trap, makoto's tick-karakusa setups from c.lk or s.mp, etc. if you played against scott's ken, he likes to parry bait by throwing safe pokes up close and then parrying whatever comes after. i had a friend in SD who played like that with dudley... so annoying.

but i hate 3S so blah.

rodimus: i've heard some crazy stories about vf4. like how they had signs next to the machines indicating where you'd play for your level (machines to play against the cpu, machines to play at if you're 10 kyu - 4 kyu, etc.). and if you tried to play at a machine not at your level, the arcade manager would send out this real good player to beat you and kick you off.

Fighting Spirit is like Rocky if Stallone not only spoke Japanese, but could form a sentence.

I mean, it's sorta like Rocky, but it's much, much better honestly. The show is 76 episodes long so you'd probably expect it to drag in parts, but it's fantastic the whole way through. And it's inspirational.

So anyone playing Fist of the North Star? Game is really good, kinda has an 80's feel to it. I'm going to check the game's faq though since I'm having trouble with some of the moves.

Mine just arrived, and suffice to say, I wa shock and the sky falls with love.

I'm keen to develop some skills with Souther, but it'll take some dedication as he doesn't seem to have a lot of range, so I'm guessing a lot of his game comes from pitbulling and projectile lockdown.

I'll definitely stick with it, but I'm definitely getting traction more readily with Kenshiro. Heaven Breaking Stance -> Heaven's Impalement -> Hundred Crack Fist = Epic win.

The FAQs for Fist on GameFAQs are really good, and well worth checking out.

The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 came to a close. The final battle was against the sponsor of the tournament, Jinpachi Mishima, from which Jin Kazama came away the victor.

Becoming the president of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Jin immediately began various programs within the company and converted the Tekkenshu into a spy project. People began to suspect a darkness in Jin, leading to increased tension, infighting and finally a full-scale war. The whole world was drawn in, and when the nations began losing power, the Zaibatsu, able to gain a profit from the potential of war, announced its independence and declared war on the entire world.

Initially the Mishima Zaibatsu was a formidable enemy, but then G Corporation rose to the position of the main opposition to the Zaibatsu. The world saw the rival company as the savior, and endorsed them completely in their drive to suppress the Zaibatsu. Eventually, G-Corporation announced that the president of the Mishima Zaibatsu was the root cause of the war and promises an immense amount of money to anyone who can capture Jin Kazama alive.

But almost as if anticipating this move, the Mishima Zaibatsu announced the opening of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6. People may enter to gain fame, money and (unintelligible). In the midst of this chaos, the curtains rise on the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.

sounds awesome for a storyline to me... full scale war (the tank stage makes sense now) and Jin a bastard.

Guys, FOTNS has the full YOU WA SHOCK intro. This is now legendary material. It doesn't use the shitty animation from the TV series either -- this looks like the stuff we had in Guilty Gear's intro. But more masculine.

Got in Tokyo a couple days ago. I haven't had a chance to really buy anything or go to thr arcades (too busy sight seeing and enjoying the Sakuras), But I did play Melty Blood and my cousin's place. Man, I need to get a fuckin' HRAP for my PS2. I need to use the stick to play fighting games now, but the fucking ball on the joystick for my Tekken stick keeps fucking twisting off. It's annoying as fucking hell. So I need to either find a way to fix this fucking stick or find some place that's selling a HRAP... or maybe I should get a custom stick? I don't even know.u can jus replace the stick w/ a sanwa.

Get a Philips screwdriver and unscrew the bottom metal plate... then use the a nut driver to open up the rest of the stick... once you get to the actual stick mechanism, get a flathead screwdriver and affix it to the bottom of the arcade stick... then screw the ball top on tight... it should never come off again. :)

Its an easy fix! I cringe everytime I see ppl do something like glue the ball tops on or something.. X_X...

Hey, that might work! Where would I be without you, Markman? Well, I'd be gluing that thing back on because that's the only solution I can think of (and even I realized it was a bad idea.) Now to find a nut driver.

I'm probably going to build a custom stick or get a HRAP sometime soon though... Jekki, I'll let you know if I decide to do it within the next day or so... dunno if I'm quite ready to get that since I'm saving up for my HT stuff though.

I've only seen a bit of the FOTNS TV series... never got a full release in the US so I never only gotten into it. I did, however, absolutely love the FOTNS OVA (New Fist of the North Star)...

chacra, how many/what kind?? u can get 30mm, but should I ask for 6 or 8? and 24mm's as well that ppl use for start/select buttons, altho I dont think u would need to replace those (unless you're cosmetically anal). Also my acquisition of them is not guaranteed, for all I kno my cousin coulda already dropped by akihabara, or he's just a buster and not going to even get them for me. Still, emailing him doesnt hurt.

I've been using it since '03, and only now has it somewhat malfunctioned. It will not work in port 'A' but it works in port 'B', which doesnt bother me at all.

I hit Fujin rank, and now I'm fighting dragon lords & shit, and the computer is cheap as hell~!!!

whenever I get to a really fast character like Law or Nina, I cannot beat them. They play extremely reckless that no human would play like,

and the best I can do is parry, which isnt even good since it seems to leave both characters neutral.

xiaoyu's hella slow man. I've taught myself a dope mix-up game by watching local vids by JMS in combination with some of kz's advice, but it's very hard to make it work against an AI who doesnt understand the concept of taking caution

In the case of a NG MVS, I'm thinking I need the motherboard, the cart, and a Supergun to hook it up to my TV. If anyone is interested in the Pelican PS2/PS3 converter....

The Pelican Converter should be coming out sometime in May. It's done, just needs some minor tweaking on certain things. It's customized, not like the ones you see out there already, so this will work on everything you want it to.

Also for getting a Neo Geo MVS setup... you'll need the MVS main board and a supergun if you wanna play on TV... the supergun I use is a MAS Systems SuperNOVA... kinda pricey, if I were to get a new one I'd get a custom one made from some of the guys on neo-geo.com , in fact I advise you to check their forums out instead as from time to time someone has a SuperGun for sale...

so my Xbox 360 gamer profile got corrupted. the Xbox 360 rep had me do the system cache clearing method. now ALL my game saves are gone. most of the games I don't mind but games like Crackdown or DOA4, where I put in 40+ hours into.....GAAHH!!!

Anyone heard of Kakuge-Yaro: Fighting Game Creator? I saw one in a couple stores for about $10. I guess it's a fighting game maker but instead of 3D it's 2D, so I thought it looked kinda intresting.

I don't know if I believe it, but Aksys is supposedly putting out a Guilty Gear collection in the US for $29.99 sometime between last month and next month according to various release dates posted on Play-Asia, EB/GS, BestBuy's in-store kiosk, and their forums. Supposedly has GGXX:MC, GGXX:MC#, and GGXX:MC/ and is to be reminiscent of the Battle Archives games in presentation. Personally, I have every iteration of Guilty Gear on import PS2 and preordered Accent Core so I have already lost out on it's supposed usefulness. :lol:

I don't believe it. Then again I find it hard for any 2-D fighting game to be released in this country anymore. Hell, I remember when they announced KOF: Neowave for Xbox. I actually thought it was a joke until I saw it sitting on the shelves. It's getting to the point when I am surprised that any fighting game (2-D/3-D) gets released here. Most of us have ways to play imports so we don't have to wait around for our favorite fighting games right? :)

Also for some random reason, Aksys games has now been synonymous with the Guilty Gear series. Remember that big rumor that they were porting Accent Core to the Wii? Didn't that come from the fact that Gamefly put up a date on their site? That went to people's heads quick.

Also since it seems like you are a big GG fan, are there any glaring differences between Slash and Accent Core?

Seems some people prefer AC and some people prefer Slash. At least, that's how it was when the game originally came out. Also, the announcer is different, the voices for the characters are different, and there's buncha changed stages.

Supposedly the storyline of Midnight Carnival is over and a new is beginning (similar to KoF I guess) but I'm not sure what exactly the new story is yet. I'm also wondering if GGXXX(?) is in their minds at all.

Speaking of KoF, SNK says KoF 2003 and KoF XI are in the same story arc, which seem to go in 3s or 4s so I'm wondering if the PS2 has it in it to stay alive long enough for a third KoF Collection (i.e. Nests, Orochi).

I woulda thought it's the tourney organizers themselves, why wouldnt it? tho I do understand SBO is a real big commercial event. Maybe the game developers really do choose what is and isnt standard (tho that sounds real dumb...)

tho as I said, after SBO will be when the real verdict about accent core will be out, coz players are most likely keeping a lot of secrets at the moment.

but umm... from what I read AC introduces a type of "EX" moves for characters, think like in 3S or Darkstalkers.

also, I've noticed a new type of stagger/dizzy type state where u slide across the floor.

and I heard something about 'slashback' I think... I dont kno what that is tho.

at least that's how it is with ggxx from what I have gained watching videos,

the revisions havent really been improvements by any means,

moreso jus changes in frame data and float properties to make one change their tactics

EDIT: I played some VF5 here in Tokyo and I actually WON!!! Finally after $10. I must be a god in America now. But the game that really caught my attention is this Gundamn "pod" game. You sit in an inclosed pod which is like the cockpit for a Gundamn. The screen surrounds you like a bubble and you play in 1st person. It's played online so you're against other players from diffrent arcades around tokyo. I played it a couple times but it's so expensive, $5 per play. They need this America.

I do play as Oswald in KOF XI though... definitely a more difficult character to get down, but he carves people up pretty damn quick. His team super is pretty fuckin' awesome.

He's got LONG ass combo's, and he's pretty solid as a set-up man for tag-in combos. He's not one of the best or anything (well, maybe) but he's definately very solid. Just kinda awkward to get used to at first.

He's an insulting character to get beat up by though. Never play as him myself, but my friends only seem to like playing as him because he's such a tool.

I'm convinced the most fearsome character in KOF XI is Oswald... though if Yamazaki was in there, I would single handedly change that (shanking people ftw.)
