Goddamn the AI in T5:DR is annoying. I got my J5 to Dragon Lord and it's starting to get on my nerves so bad. Still fun though.

Welcome to Cag Fighter Thread XXIIII, aka How I Learned to stop worrying and Love RelentlessRolento.
 seems like I have people act like that towards me all the time :)
on the debate of VF vs. Tekken:
let's set it up like Tekken and VF are sports in the real world...
VF is like golf; strategic well placed shots with a ton of training needed. still good but obviously to a specific crowd.
Tekken is like basketball; everyone can pick it up in minutes but it takes time to get good at, has alot of flare, etc.
i doubt i'm clear, but who gives a bohemian rat cage about it.
also, for the EVO trip in may, I still don't know what's going on, but if I sell some games I designed this month at my school's art show I'll probably be good to go since some of my bills will be payed off.
lastly, we need to get back into playing gears of war or uno... I miss that social time where everyone decides to pick on me.
p.s. I need to change my avatar sometime back to bryan fury... post good pics of him sometime (mainly looking for headshots).

Decent analogy, but I don't know. I feel like it's almost cliche to say "VF is more in depth, Tekken is easier to learn". I don't know that it's even necessarily true, I just feel like since it's less flashy, people think it's more technical. I understand and appreciate high-level VF play, but I also understand and appreciate all the hard work, training and intangibles that go into high level Tekken play.
To me, it's more like apples to oranges. They have enough similarities to be categorized together, but enough differences to appeal to entirely different crowds. Also, someone can be a fan of both apples and oranges, but they generally have a preference.
But yeah, 3 notes about DR PS3:
1) Does anyone else get a weird sort of haze on certain maps? I'm running it in 1080i and on certain stages, such as the 5.0 version of secret garden, or the 5.0 version of Moonlight Wilderness, it is a bit fuzzy. Dunno what's up with that.
2) I have experienced slowdown twice. Once while hitting Roger JR w/ J5's DF+2 on Poolside Paradise (5.0 version) and another time while fitting Panda (also w/ J5).
3) My J5 is finally Dark Lord. Final Record (I won't be playing Ghost battle w/ him anymore) is 260 and 11. Next up is Kaz I think., Maybe Heihachi.

that tekken vs. vf article is so crappy. you can tell when you read that tekken has dial-a-combos comparable to killer instinct. lolz.
i don't like debating that either has more depth. they're both fun and they both have completely different elements about them. vf seems to exhaust my mind more, but tekken has a bigger emphasis on controlling space.
i think they're both easy to pick up too. i don't like it when people think vf is soooo hard to get into. the training mode is daunting, but if you just pick it up and play and experiment, you still learn a lot. the only thing that might seem more difficult is that it's easier to see frame advantage/disadvantage in tekken. i don't know why, but it is. maybe it's because in tekken, when you hit people sparks and blood come out and the animations are more distinct. that's my guess.

Tekken is the superior game, Virtua Fighter has no style at all, nor any likable characters... however, let's continue that discussion here!
What do you consider is "style?"

What do you consider is "style?"
Style in this instance meaning character design... it's like the creators were like, let's have generic karate guy, generic american(spikey hair, flamboyant style), generic black dude(big, muscular, seemingly unintelligent), generic ninja, generic old man, generic wrestler, generic monk character, generic oriental girl... That's just my opinion though, you're welcome to disagree.

"Style" shouldn't be limited to character design. I think gameplay is a larger part.

I agree, but I don't really think that Virtua Fighter dominates that category either. Maybe because I haven't had the chance to actively participate in high level VF play.
Either way, IMO Tekken > VF, but feel free to differ. To each his own.
3s > Tekken + VF anyway

Getting Heihachi to Dark Lord should be the easiest :)
d+1,2 all day...
That's too bad cause VF is a much better game.
Regarding this... I won't deny it. I feel 100% that VF has a better 3D fighting game system. But still. Who plays that shit? That's my major gripe.
I posted about something similar earlier this year.... It went something like this....
I'm a Tekken player and fan... probably one of the most hardcore Tekken nuts out there... I've played VF since VF2 and actually read up and tried to learn the game(mostly played with VF4 and VF4 EVO)... I even got a few of my friends to start playing here...
While I'm tried and true a die hard Tekken fan til' I die... I can tell the polish and shine put into VF... it's an amazing game and it does SO MUCH that I wish Tekken would have. I think one thing for sure... Tekken is much easier to get into... easier to teach, easier to learn... and for me, easier to enjoy. It's simple yes. Does it feel rewarding? Depends... I live in an area where competition for this game is ENDLESS... we have one of the biggest crews around and we're always willing to play.
But for VF... I don't have that luxury... but I LOVE watching/trying things out... I really hope VF5 blows up over here so that more and more people can experience the game and not nominate shit like Mortal Kombat Armageddon and Smackdown vs Raw for fighting games of the year.... T.T ...
I'll be going to Japan sometime this year and one of the main reasons I'm going is to watch/play Tekken and other games at arcades in Japan....
I'm sure the experience there will be much better than it is over here....
Here's to hoping that 2007 doesn't only bring the games... it' brings the players..

Ehh, Tekken was released just a year later and certainly has had it's characters age much better. I think this due largely to the fact that the characters develop in looks as the series went on, whereas with Virtua Fighter the characters look pretty much the same with much more pretty costumes and graphics (w/ a few exceptions, such as Lau).
For example:
Jeffrey from VF1:

Jeffrey from VF4:

Kazuya from T1:

Kazuya from T5:DR:

(Sorry couldn't find any good Akira pics, or a decent pic of Jeffrey from VF5. Hope it still articulates my point.)

I honestly think that the learning curve for VF compared to other games isn't that bad.
Sure the game is deep, but most games played nowadays at high competitive levels have enough depth/know how... I think VF5 is a lot easier to get into compared to 4/EVO/FT... It helps that throw breaking is easier now too and more user friendly with the throw clash system.

I still say 2d fighters should not be compared to 3d. that's treading dangerous waters.
one thing that may fix alot of VF problems is one thing: make the damn story important! People are attached to ryu, yes cuz his moves are neato, but he's a wandering warrior who has a millionare best friend and is battling an inner deamon tot take him over... kazuya has a fucked up family and has been possesed by the devil thus screwing his entire family and everyone in the figthing tournament... Kage has, um, Dural.

Seriously I could master 3 - 4 fighters in Tekken quicker than I could master 1 in VF. But that doesn't mean the game is better. I'm still training with Akira.
Akira's G+K (release G after one frame) is freaking mindblowing to prefrom. Anyone got tips one this.?

MarkMan
03-08-2007, 04:27 AM
What would you say is 'mastering' a character? I mean, I don't think anyone can say they can 'master' any character in a fighting game... what you can do everyone's moves or something is that it?
The only way you can find out if you're GOOD with a character is by either stomping up some competition, even then, that won't help much unless you can compare it to everyone else.
Honestly I can do anything/everything with any character in VF/Tekken... all it takes is some practice, and that is it. Using them in gameplay is where it matters IMO. Just train... heck I can train with any character in Tekken, there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
As far as Akira's K+G knee... just hit them together and slide/let go of the buttons ASAP... It's just something you need to get used to... on a good day I can perform it in combos.

What's up y'all, nice new thread you got here!
This weekend I was at The Break again, for the first time since last May. It was quite refreshing! And oh man, those cheese steaks... they haven't missed a beat. An MK compatriot of mine was telling me about some arcade spot in NYC... part bar, part arcade, apparently called "Barcade" or something like that. Anyone familiar with it?
oh and lol at the pic in the first post. It was funny how they always insisted on putting some hideous American artwork on Street Fighter stuff, up until the Alpha games.

Didn't all the Tekken characters age 30 years (or something) between games?
Of course they have to look diffferent. It's part of the STORY.
Beyond the character descriptions in the manual, you wont find ANY story in VF. It's all about the fighting. And Suzuki's attempts to make it a realistic experience (floaty jumps not withstanding) preclude the use of feathery wings, laser beams, giant robots, panda bears and animated practice dummies.
Kazuya shirtless and Kazuya in a suit seems like a "pretty costume" change to me. :D

We do need more Worms, and none of that 3D crap. Anyways back on topic:
Anyone ever play a Sega CD game "Revengers of Venegance?" It was a Fighting/RPG. I'm surprised the genre did take off more in the late - mid 90's.
Markman - When I mean master I guess to the point where I just feel comfortable. Can't really explain the feeling. I can say I've mastered Billy Kane (KOF 98), at least at one point I did.

I came close to buying that for Dreamcast a couple of times, but I never really knew enough about it.
What about Tobal? That's like a story-based RPG-ish fighter, right? I picked that up on a whim a while ago for a couple of bucks. Haven't played it yet but I've always heard good things about it. My PS1 backlog is ridiculous.

JJBA was a straight-up 2D figher with some neat mechanics. It can probably be found pretty cheap, and it wouldn't hurt to pick it up for < $10. Some neat characters too.

co-sign with markman on mastering characters.. a real measure of skill is how well you play your characters against other players. in high-level play, where strat is your focus, execution should be assumed to be 100% anyway.
that's why it's kinda intimidating when i fuck up in marvel at some tourneys, you start hearing the crowd yelling and giving you shit.. it's funny when you see it happen to other people, but it really throws off your game when it happens to you.

The JoJo for Dreamcast is a strait up fighter. No RPG elements at all. I'm not sure about the PS2 cell-shaded JoJo's. It's a great fighter, I liked it so much I got into collecting the Manga. Apparently JoJo's was one of the most succesful and influencial Mangas in Japan.

The good Xiaoyu player there is JMS. Everyone basically has their own character, though, so popularity doesn't really matter.

Agreed. Regardless of how many people are at a said tournament, I always feel the pressure.
I know I don't have to play 100% perfect, but with so many people watching you, a part of you wants to impress/do your best. I throw a fit when I make stupid mistakes in CVS2 against regular people in arcades. It multiplies times 100 when I am playing the game in a tournament. Usually involves stuff about me beating myself up for not being patient, playing into someone's trap, etc etc..
It is always nice to have people come and give you positive comments on your play though. Makes the pressure you put on yourself feel sort of worth it.

okay.. i just got back home from seeing 300 after MUCH anticipation and after hearing MUCH praise from my friends..
and.. eh.
the action and visual effects were awesome, no doubt.. but jeez, it's just a 2 hour long fight scene. i feel like i want my 10 dollars back.
being a comic aficionado, i guess i was kind of hoping for the best, but i guess i gave it too much hype in my own mind. i guess i shouldn't be all that surprised.. sin city had a lot more source material to work with.
but i kept thinking how cool it would be if there was a fighting game with some of the different characters/soldiers.. and xerxes makes me think of urien for some reason..

I've been saying that for years.
They finally started to realize the importance of aesthetics and design in VF4 though. I don't care how "great" a game is. If you have no style with that substance you'll be doomed to niche status. Vice-versa as well. There is a reason that there is a big difference in gameplay from DOA1 to DOA2. They knew bouncing boobs will only go so far. Same with character design from VF3 to VF4. There is a reason Sarah looks more like Nina now.

Waiting for more of the US DVDs to come out before I get started on that show. I think there's only 2 out, so there's a ways to go and I know I'll be annoyed by the wait between discs if I start too early.

Awesome combo video MarkMan.
Question for any gumball stick owners.
I recently acquired a used Agetec Dreamcast stick ("The Green Goblin"). The top and bottom part of the metal stick are ok, but it has some weird dirt in-between. At first I thought it was rust, but it wasn't orange. More like brown/black and I can't seem to get it off.
Anyone know what it might be?

Jimfoley-- that takedown sounds pretty epic. I never get to see crazy shit like that
only thing like that I've seen was when I saw an undercover cop busting some guy at a gas station. It was fucking nuts-- he was this middle aged, balding guy in a velour suit pointing a gun and screaming at the guy, who was on the ground with his hands on his head. My friends and I thought he was a psychopath and were very freaked out, being 13 at the time. He finally pulled out his badge and explained what the hell was going on.
OT: ouch, the buttons on the Tekken stick worked with a USB adapter, but not the stick :(

Apossum: thanks! So far there are only 2-3 convertors that work with arcade sticks for the PS3... and they only sell them in Japan. One of them is by Sanwa Supply and the other two are made by Elecom.
Just hang in there, in April Pelican will be releasing a lag free convertor that not only enables you to use PS2/PS1 controllers/sticks on the PS3, but also for your PS2/PS1 games. A friend of mine works for Pelican and he confirmed no lag.
The slight, SLIGHT, lag on the current adapters that work with arcade sticks make me sad. I mean 2-3 frames might not seem like much. But that's a shitload too much for me.

BTW out of curiosity who does everyone use in VF? I'm training hard with Lei Fei, the monk. If anyone has any tips on using him I'd apperciate it. I was using Akira but some of his moves are a bit hard to pull off 100% of the time. Especially his Knee Bash, the one where you have to release G after 1 frame. Chacrana - I hate to annoy you, but I'm seriously getting annoyed of using the PS3's web browser so I'm going to :). Do you think that the Gateway Laptop that the dude Kendro posted in that thread I made in PC general is worth it? How will it run HL2 (that's the only PC game I really care about)? I'll order it tomorrow if you think it's worthwhile. I was thinking about getting one from iBuyPower but I've heard bad things. Any other site that lets you custom design a Laptop for a reasonable price? I think my budget will be about 1,500 now.
Sorry for cluttering the thread guys but 4 days of only having the PS3 as my web browser is freaking killing me. If any other PC heads can help answer the questions I left for Chacrana, I'd really appreciate the help.

Yo Jim -- sorry for not keeping up on the laptop thread. I can, however, tell you that the Gateway should be fine based on those specs. The 7600 is definitely enough for HL2 and its mods. The only thing that you need to change (and I mean need) on the configuration of that laptop is the amount of RAM. Opt for 2048mb (the 2 X 1024mb option since it's more effective and cheaper.) And yeah, Ibuypower is teh suck.
Anyway, I hope that helps and I hope everything works out for you.

Yeah, I got that one. However everyone's item is diffrent (I think.) I just completed Jeffery's Trial Series and Combos, and he got some "Thor looking helmet" with wings. Some of Akira's trial combo's are too damn hard. Think I'll wait till I get my arcade stick.
The problem is Gamefaqs doesn't have a good faqs on the game and I don't remember a guide for it (I remember one for VF4 but not for evo.) It's a pain to figure out these little things. It's like I'm back in the 80's when we trusted only "Nintendo Power" for all our cheats.

Good morning, bitches and hoes. Today, I've come to inform you that NCSX has their preorder up for GGXX Accent Core for the PS2 (not the stupid Wii)... it's coming out 5/31. Also, KOF NESTS is coming out 4/19, but I think that was previously announced.

I hate/love the fact that both XX Slash and Accent Core are coming out so close to each other.
I want to get Accent Core, but if the changes are nothing that I'll notice too much, I'll go ahead and get XX Slash this week for $29. GGX for DC is the only GG game that I have, so I'd like a game with a bigger character selection. Bums me out that I can't play as Testament.
Wish I could play CVS2 online as well, but after playing DOA4 online, I would lost my mind even more getting lag on CVS2. Lately I've stuck to my N-Groove team of Hibiki/Iori/Blanka. I've been experimenting with Morrigan because of her fun rushdown/guard break strings.

Ouch, I know how this happens, if you happen to quit the game/turn off console while it is loading or after hitting start+select for the soft reset it will corrupt the game data file but it will keep your customization data.
Unfortunately there is no fix for this that I know of. :(

3 cvs2 hibiki players!
hahah, i'm one too! but i'm a tier whore, so i use a-groove hibiki/sakura/bison even though i can't really do the customs. hibiki's makes me mad too, i always miss the timing with the c.hp cancel into qcb+lp. sakura's, i'll be lucky to get 3 uppercuts in, and bison i barely even know how to start it... i just hope i get lucky with a random slide into scissors to the corner. i should learn blanka but i never had the game and learning those 3 without the game was hard enough.
i love customs though... i feel a lot safer doing customs than doing supers for some reason.

Here's what I got from wiki about Ky and his music references:
Ky Kiske is named after Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske from the power metal band Helloween. His Overdrive move, Ride the Lightning, is named after a Metallica album. His instant kill attack, Rising Force, shares its name with a Yngwie Malmsteen album and a song by Hammerfall. Ky's theme song, Holy Orders (Be Just or be Dead), is a reference to Iron Maiden song Be Quick or Be Dead.

Having X-Men Vs. Street Fighter to play in between my breaks in classes makes it easier to go to. Sometimes I do feel that my crew are pretty much it when it comes to fighting game fans in my area. In the handful of years I've here the only serious fighting game fans I see crowding the Tekken 5, KOF and so on machines at the local arcades are my friends.
It's funny. When I entered the tournament that fellow fighting game CAG'er Kristianator put together, their county's best were surprised that the county that my friends and I were from, played fighting games at all. Probably because it's littered with rich yuppies and celebrities like George Lucas.

the writer is obviously talking out of his ass
especially when he calls him "Justin Fong." He's trying to say that when Justin plays MVC2, he's Asian and when he plays 3rd Strike, he's American?
How about when he plays MvC2, he's that guy who doesn't lose ever so people cheer for the underdog and when he plays Japan's best at 3rd strike, he's still that bastard who wins at MvC2, but is now representing the U.S. at 3rd Strike. I'm sticking my neck out a bit since I've never been to Evo, but I can't imagine people are choosing who to cheer for based on race. Anyone care to comment on that?
I think the writer dug so deep that he missed the point of competition entirely. sure, there was some American nationalism involved in the crowd at 3rd Strike...just like we cheer for U.S. teams in the olympics  he made some interesting observations about how players are described though.

How did I know the writer of that article was from UC Berkeley....
As an "Asian-American" fighting game player, I am offended by that article because of it's sheer ignorance and stupidity. My mind is blown that someone actually took the time to write that. The fact that the writer tries to sprinkle random bits of world history into the article, attempting to make some link, is fucking ridiculous.
This is the first time I've ever heard the race card in any form brought into fighting games, competitive or not. Yes, we all have grown up around arcades and the fighting games that used to fill them up. Yes, we were very well aware of our dominant and not so dominant usual players. Yes, we all remember putting up a quarter..."I got next". That entire part of my life, growing up around fighting games, arcades and competition still and always will feel like yesterday to me.
Every fighting game scene has Asian players in it. Are they good? Sure, but I know a whole lot that aren't. I know a lot of Asian gamers that hate fighting games or play them casually. Fighting game fans come in all different ethnicities, sizes, genders, ages and the like. Which is why I love the genre so much. Sure there are the "stereotypical" fighting game fans, but for the most part I constantly run into people playing CVS2 at the local arcade near my GF's place, that all look different. Novices, Pro's, Tournament players, a couple looking to play CVS2 for fun, the mix is there.
For him to try a draw a comparison about people hating JWong and booing him because of his race or his dominance over his "non-Asian" competitors, is just downright stupid and lame. If I knew I could get into UC Berkeley with random thesis' like that, I would've applied there first. The idea that he could pick out all the players locations depending on their race is even more silly. If you've ever been to Berkeley you know the school is littered with Asian students. The school offers the most variety in our area when it comes to majors and is one of the top schools in the Bay. Hell, I wanted to go there and get my Buddhist Art History degree there. I know white folks that lived in Oakland. I know asian kids that live outside Berkeley. I know black people that live in my county. For him to say that a certain race should ONLY live in a certain area in the Bay, implying that only poor blacks live in Oakland or that rich Asians live in Berkeley is so stupid it makes me want to throw up on myself.
Out of my fighting game crew most of the games are covered. But by this writer's theory I must be making up some sort of dream land group of friends I hang with.
The best Tekken player in my crew? A white guy
The best Guilty Gear player in my crew? A white guy
The best CVS/MVC2 player in my crew? Asian guy
etc..etc.. you get the point.
Why are people booing JWong? Simple. A lot of those people in the audience like to cheer for underdogs. They like to find faults in the players that CONSTANTLY are top tier in their game and always find some way to make it to the finals. We shouldn't boo them, we should encourage them. The fighting game scene (though a relationship with a ghost) is constantly evolving within it's strong communities, so it's always hard to stay on top. I give the best Tekken, DOA, CVS2, MVC2, GGX, and so on players much respect because once you are on top, everyone wants your head and you have to fight to stay there.
People hating on you isn't because of your race, it's because you are on top. I remember posting here about my 3rd place finish in a CVS2 tournament not too long ago (Thanks for the tourney Kris!!). The person I had worked with at the time would not stop talking shit about how he could beat me, that the whole thing was a fluke. Did he do it because I was Asian and as a White male he had to put me in my place? No. He did it because he was cocky and of course when some people hear you are on top, they have to smile and try to knock you down.
No shit players from Japan are so good, is it because they are Asian? How about the fact that arcades still run rampant in that country? How about the fact that fighting games are STILL coming out there in arcades and on consoles? How about the fact that the genre is still hot and is still highly competitive? How about they don't start their sentences with..."Oh..yea..I remember in 10th grade I played 3S". Huh? I just played it 2 days ago. Fighting games have become too nostalgic for the general public.
It's up to us fighting game fans to keep it alive, keep it strong, keep it dominant.
It's people exactly like the guy who wrote the article that do their own part to tear things down one brick at a time.
P.S- Sorry for the long post. I love my fightin' games :)

I think the writer was really trying to sound smarter than he actually is? Race being a factor in how you play? I really fucking doubt it. At least, it has never once determined how I play against somebody... in the matches of DOA 4 I played against Apossum, it wasn't whether he was black or white, it was that he was a $$$ that made me hate him.

That was a long as fuckin' hell post, Asian, but... actually a lot more worthwhile than the article. As for the historical bits -- he was throwing those around to sound smart. kainzero
03-14-2007, 04:27 PM
yeah, that article sucked.
people generally don't like justin because he wins. there is no other reason. when you're on top, you're a target... it has nothing to do with the way he plays. it isn't just mvc2, but he's made a good name for himself in 3s and in cvs2.
ironically, he compares justin wong vs daigo to an "american vs. asian" battle, that asians are methodical and americans are snazzy risk takers. people liked daigo and still do because of the way he plays, lots of comebacks and psychic DPs and things that generally shouldn't work but do... a lot of his videos have his 3s ken doing random c.mk into shoryuken, but they almost always connect. so really, daigo is the aggressive risk-taker in that match.
and i don't want to hear about how daigo was really the american in this match because he played an american ken vs the asian chun.
this kinda intelligent-wanna be crap is why i hated taking some of my humanities in college. uuuugh.

Kainzero,
Those kind of people are way too common in the JC, State and UC systems. I think teachers need to do their job in discouraging that type of thinking. I have had teachers that stretch to make students who voice random bits of genius sound correct, which reinforces that type of mentality. I have also had some teachers that just flat out say things like "Umm...yea I'm not buying that...where did you get that from?". We need more of that.
Apossum,
As lame as it sounds, I was actually thinking about it. I thought my post was ok at best, I could try to write something a lot better than that. I typed that gigantic post based on pure confusion after reading that article. The funny/disturbing thing is the guy actually has a blog dedicated to the "ongoing" discussion of race and video games. A part of me is wondering what nationality this guy is.
Playing to the fans seems like a double-edged sword. I'm curious to what everyone thinks about that. Playing to your audience is definitely something that casual and non-casual players think about while playing. You want to be able to entertain your fellow fighting game brethren or even random people walking by watching. At the same time what if playing to the fans mean you use a strategy that is terrible against your opponent? What if your desire to hit that flashy combo, cancel, or glitch costs you an entire match and maybe the tournament?

that's not lame, the guy needs to be told what's up. and I know what you guys mean about show offs in class...the worst is that if you talk to those people after class, they'll almost surely admit how insincere they are about what they said and how they don't care about what they were talking about (especially in literature/media based courses.) IRL, most people take pride in their ability to bullshit, and it does have its place, but it's obnoxious in class. On the other hand, profs often encourage it by dissecting things too much.
as far as playing to the fans goes, if I can pull it off without losing the match, I'll do it for sure. but I wouldn't start showing off until I knew for sure I could win.
I used to show off a lot with MK1, since there are so many infinites you can do by juggling people in the corner. There a lot of fatality glitches that are fun to show off too.

asian: heh, actually i don't care if the professor thinks they're right or wrong, but i hate it when it's totally not relevant to the class and sucks up a ton of time, which is what they're mostly doing.
anyway...
as for "catering" to the crowd, i play to win, and because of that what entertains me is watching tactics unfold, not lots of attacking. and i watch videos with the intent of seeing how they play like that. everyone says chun is boring, i disagree. sure chun is defensive, but i like playing chun because i like shutting people down and making them feel helpless and desperate. chun vs. chun is really annoying though, i'll give you that, and more often than not i lose the match because i'm impatient and force things. but i hate 3s anyway. =P
i don't know what it means to show off in a fighting game anymore. it's all the same to me. -_-;

corner infinites? fatality glitches? please, elaborate!
in the arcade version--
http://youtube.com/watch?v=f532LUbu9Sw
The Cage one with the jump punches (which the vid maker screwed up) always worked the best and put me on the verge of getting my ass kicked a few times
fatality glitches...where to start?
depending on what revision you play--
there are a bunch of gltches with Cage's fatality. You can punch off 3 heads if you keep pressing f,f,f HP fast enough. In an earlier version, you could do the split-nut punch right after punching off someone's head (which would make their head appear on again.)
With sub-zero-- if you freeze them right after the last hit, you can rip their head off while they're frozen (which turns their body a glitchy green.)
Scorpion-- if you throw them during "finish him" and tap up a whole lot during the throw animation, you'll burn them while they're on the ground.
Liu Kang-- if you start the cartwheel too far away, you whiff it and can do whatever you want until the fatality time runs out.
there may be some I'm forgetting. There were some with MK2 as well (like killing the baby after a Babality in an early revision  )

I think it holds up fine, especially the 6-Player version. They have one in Boomers, Dania. But why put Dazzler in the game? Nobody wanted to use her? I remember there was always a fight to see who would use Wolverine. Good thing I was a Nightcrawler guy. NOTHING MOVES THE BLOB!!!

yeah, i got some tips.
don't get frustrated or worry too much about whether you win or lose. i went to an ffa ranbat like a year ago. just play your best.
when i went, i lost my first round by a sliver of health and a big execution error. i lost so much confidence that i played like trash in the double elim round and got peaced out by someone who my friend (rickstah) called "the biggest scrub at ffa."
conversely, don't get too cocky either. one time when i was in SD, i used to practice with this guy and i used to beat him pretty easily, getting double digit win streaks on him. when a double elim tournament came up and i drew him in losers, i thought it was an easy win and i was up with only one round to go. then he came back and beat me to knock me out of the tourney.
strangely, in my first match of that tournament against someone i thought was better than me, i got perfected 4 times in a row to start off, but i was still able to take the second game and make at least something out of the third game.
maybe i'm just too random. or i have terrible defense. according to vf quest mode, i have a 10-20% success rate at blocking lows. =P

Use Sub-Zero (non-ninja) and freeze him, walk up to him, uppercut him, and then immediately shoot the ice (d, f+lp) again. 90% of the time you'll either refreeze him as he is getting up, or he'll go for his Anti-Air shoulder charge move, in which case you simply HP him on his way down, shoot an ice to catch him in the air, and then uppercut. Rinse and repeat.

Good luck though. Best tip is to hope you don't get matched up against one of the really good players.
Second best tip is to not worry, and just do what you do. Don't ever let yourself freeze or let your mind blank out; always have a fall-back strategy no matter how cheesy it is.
Third best tip is to get paired with Rickstah, then tell him B:L says hi before proceeding to scrub him to death. 8-)

I'm comin at yall w/ my report of yesterday,
boooooooooooooooo~!!!!!
first of all, I wasnt even planning on entering 3S. But to waste my time I played a few matches, and won enough times to garner the confidence to burn a good $5 just for the sake of burning $5. But I hella messed up during the real matches! ugh I was playing rather predictably, I forgot to read my opponent, and I completely effed up my offensive wake-up game. In retrospect, I coulda had an extra $5 in my wallet rite now...
but Tekken tho... man Tekken is hella bizarre. I cant believe every dude there brought a controller with them, wtf!! Everybody is playing on a pad, and it's their own pad~!!! Everyone brought their own dual shock pad (except one guy who had a psx pad shaped like a saturn pad) It's hella creepy, not only the fact that everyone has a pad, but also the fact that it has to be their pad as if they couldnt just bring 2 and share. About 4 doodz had joysticks tho, as if the arcade machine didnt already have joysticks on it. I asked some guy and he said it was becoz his stick is more comfortable, whatever...
anyway it was my 1st time playing against a human ever. I got beat pretty hard coz I like to rush in, but Tekken seems to be a pokey game. All my attacks got frame-advantaged. I got quite used to moving around tho, but since I played only on psp my execution was hella off. Like, I would hit my opponent with a combo but I wouldnt finish it, I need to improve that.
but good experience~!! it's going down again a week from now (3/24) and I saw sum guy I kno while I was there too. I dont wanna drive so hopefully he can give me a ride coz he live in my hometown!

There's nothing bizarre about that at all... wouldn't it be best to play what you're comfortable on? This has been going on since Tekken 5.0 came out in late 2005.
More often than not, the sticks/buttons on the machines are either broken or suck ass.... poor Japanese Sanwa parts aren't as sturdy as the mountain men of Happ parts that you usually find in American cabinets.
Down South a bit more in San Diego we have a good balance of both pad/stick players... I'd say about 60/40 stick... ratio wise...

Not really. Many of those characters play like their X-Men Vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes versions. I really like playing as Shadow, since Charlie was one of my favorite characters from X-Men Vs. Street Fighter. Shadow has a little lag when using any super moves, but his speed with corner/air combos makes up for it.
Wolverine is still crazy in that game. It wasn't until Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, where they decided to finally slow him down.
If I remember right that game (MVSF) is still pretty broken, so most of the characters have infinites.
Thanks for the tourney report Jekki. I'm always interested in hearing others talk about their fighting game tournament experiences.

This has been going on since Tekken 5.0 came out in late 2005. the reason I find it weird is becoz when I go to an arcade, I want to play arcade games on arcade machines. You dont tell your friend "hey man let's go to the arcade" only to have him reply "ah cool jus drop by my pad first so I can pick up my psx controller"
if every1 is going to carry a pad, why hold a tournament at an arcade? bring the fire hazard into someone's garage instead.
but I aint trying to criticize the community or anything. In the end I'm really nothing more than a scrub ass noob in regards to Tekken. I say these things from the perspective as an outsider to the scene.

Yeah, I get your perspective, you got it spot on... it probably does look odd to someone that isn't accustomed to it. But it's been that way for awhile now. :)
People can play at their best... And that's one of the reasons why the arcade scene for DR is staying strong(although no where near as strong as the old, old, olden days)...

I used to love the first Darkstalkers, and then as the series went on I fell less in love with it. The characters are too silly for me, especially when they're playing off all the old horror monsters. I would've liked it to be more dark and moody.

Yeah, Darkstalkers the game is surprisingly good. Darkstalkres the animated series is surprisingly bad. I'd expect it to be horrible, but it surpassed my expectations 10-fold.
the Anime version wasn't that bad IMHO... the American one um...

vampire savior on the sega saturn with the ram cart was the shit.
and today I bought me some mdf ($25 for TOO MUCH of it) and constructed another joystick box~! Just the 4 walls tho, glued together and currently drying. My goal is to make this one really nice. Tomorrow I'll sand, putty, sand, putty it til I'm satisfied, then buy sum 'primer' and spray paint to finish it off!! All I'd need to do after that is make the top / bottom panels & buy some buttons / stick.
oh, and Markman or kainzero, how do u escape throws in Tekken?? I kno u push the punch button that corresponds to the throw your opponent (which I have absolutely no idea how the timing works), but I saw A LOT of ppl succeeding at throw escapes. during the tourney. I wonder if there's a trick to it, or if they are just extremely good and lucky at guessing
There's nothing bizarre about that at all...
The only thing that would count as possibly bizarre is that it's an SBO Qualifier event, and SBO doesn't let you use your own stick. :cold:
But yeah, it's definately more prudent to bring your own controls if it's allowed, because you'd rather not rely on what they have at hand.

if god of war was a fighting game, it would be the most frustrating experience ever.

Guys, do you realize that FOTNS comes out on the 29th? Does anyone have it preordered?

It's supposed to be fantastic. There's some minor balance issues with a couple characters, but there's still a ton of people putting up match videos for the game and there has been for well over a year now... so it must be something special regardless.

I don't. I want to hear more hands-on reviews (aka this thread), before I make a purchase.
I read this review not too long ago:
http://insomnia.ac/reviews/atomiswave/hokutonoken/review.php
It made me want to hold off for a little bit it on it. Does anyone know where I could check out some gameplay videos?

And I'm calling bullshit on that Insomniac review. That author has said a lot of stupid stuff in the past.

And from what I've heard... this game is broken as fuck...
They should rename it to Toki Land 20XX...
But IMO it is very entertaining to watch... :)

WTF? Most random statement of the day. Respect.
Anyway, from what I've heard, the game isn't any more broken than NGBC at the absolute worst. So it's not really too bad at all. It won't be the next Guilty Gear in terms of competitive play, but it's still a damn good game.

The general rule is... (although there are very few exceptions)
Left hand leading = 1 break
Right hand leading = 2 break
Both hands extending = 1+2 break
Of course 1+2 break throws are usually command throws not the basic 1+3 or 2+4 throws, but most of the time the animation is unique and easier to associate as a double break throw.
Example... Julia's mad axes throw.
The best way to practice it I guess is get accustomed to throws... go to command training and set the CPU controlled opponent to do 3 different throws, each with different breaks... I advise you to use Paul and these throws:
1+3
2+4
f,f+1+2
Now even if you don't break them every time, if you can at least tell what throw it was or know your mistakes, then that is half the battle. :)
