View Full Version : Are the Orioles really that bad.. now I need tickets for Sunday

Since Big Mike Sweeney and the rest of the Kansas City Royals are visiting the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, I decided that I would take a weekend trip (which means no CC games for me on Sunday) down to Baltimore to see them. I got my hotel room cheap through Priceline, which I expected, however, I didn't expect to get my tickets so cheap through ticket brokers (read- scalpers) for so cheap.

For the Saturday game, I got a $30 on the lower level behind home plate for $15, and for the Sunday game I got two upper level $15 tickets for $1 each. So I've gotta wonder if I got the deal of the week (as far as baseball tickets are concerned), or are the Orioles just that bad that they can't even draw against one of the worst teams in baseball this year?

I used to pay 2 bucks for bleacher seats for the Rangers(this was 5 years ago though).

If you do not go to a game in NY ticket prices seem fairly reasonable.

Well you come from brewers country, where they sell $1 seats....... I'm stuck in the high rent district with three of the biggest draws of the season in driving distance (Yankees, Phillies, and Red Sox), which aren't only tough tickets, but fairly pricey as well.

This is the first smaller market game I've been to in a while, I usually hit up NY, Philly, and LA to go to games, and this seems like an anomoly.

actually if I remember correctly Camden Yards usually remains in the top 5 in attendance.

Also, if you go to DC, take 495 and do not drive through the city (only posting since they are so close)

and the traffic sucks the whole way down (just returned from trip to Jersey). They are doing construction all along I-95. If you have an EZ pass it will not be that bad, but those tolls really fuck up traffic.

Gee! Shaq-Fuing fun for the traffic... and I'm actually staying down in Alexandria since I've got a couple friends down there to see, so I'll have to hit 895 to get down.

As for Camden Yards, I'm pretty sure it's been dwindling with the introduction of the newer parks like pac bell, petco, safeco, and citizen's bank... but also the other thing is Camden Yards has a bigger capacity than a lot of the others as well.....

Well, the O's have been pretty bad for the last 5 years at least. So the prices and attendance have gone along with their performance. They used to always have high attendance, because it's the only team in MD, and surrounding arease, like DE, VA, and DC. But since they've been sucking it up lately people have stopped going, but it's still one of the best parks in the majors.

As a life-long Orioles fan, I can say, unfortunately, that yes the Orioles are really bad. The thing is they actually have good hitting this year, but as usual their pitching sucks. I believe things really started getting bad for them when they let Mussina go to the Yankees. Maybe one of these days Angelos will learn that he needs to invest in pitching as well in order to keep his team competitive.

But take out DC, NoVA and the very extraneous "Metropolitan" area and that dwindles Baltimore very far down the list. Like on the nielsen market listing DC is 8 and baltimore is 23 and kansas city, well that's 31. Click Here for the 210 Designated Markets (http://www.nielsenmedia.com/DMAs.html)

It's also the reason that the Orioles Management vehnimately opposes the Expos going to DC.

But from what I gather, this is going to be a very empty game.

Why would you take out DC now? I understand about not wanting another team to come into the market, but the reason the owner doesn't want a team in DC is that he considers that his market. So if the Orioles consider DC part of their market why wouldn't you?

Baseball Almanac isn't quite sure either! Sometimes television ratings are used to describe markets and other times its population. Even the latter can be misused as it might or might not include adjacent cities. Al Streit discusses this exact topic and provides us with a very insightful look into Baseball Markets and their numbers as compared to the other major league sporting venues.

Baseball Markets

by Al Streit
An Analysis

In the early part of the 21st century, Major League Baseball finds itself the professional sport confined almost entirely to the largest consolidated statistical metropolitan areas (CSMAs) in the United States and Canada. While the other three major professional team sports in North America have numerous franchises in metropolitan areas with fewer than 2 million people, only three major league baseball teams are situated in such locales: the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers.

In what follows, the size of the particular CSMA is given, together with the baseball team(s) in that area. American League teams are shown in red and National League teams in blue. Cities shown in black italics represent metropolitan areas without major league baseball, but home to NBA basketball, NFL football, and / or NHL hockey teams.

Oh man, the Yankees are the worst for tickets. That's why I can hardly go. The tickets would be in the upper deck way up or in the bleachers.

I frequently scalp Os tickets and since Cal retired you can barely give tickets away. There's a place to sell tickets without interference called the scalp free zone, where the people selling tickets outnumber the ones buying by about 5 to 1.
By comparison, the last time I tried to sell Ravens tickets two guys who wanted to buy my tickets actually got into a fistfight over them.

Where is this mystical Scalp-Free zone? The seller of my tickets for sunday backed out, and if I can get a deal on site, it'd be sweet.

Across the street from Pickles; the opposite side of the stadium as the warehouse.

Sort of along the third base line? (Just trying to get bearings straight) Which also reminds me... Stub Hub is NOT a good place to buy tickets from. They use that Half.com model, and leave you hanging......

you cant get lower level behind plate at shea or yankee stadium without getting season tickets or slipping the guy 20 bucks on a non important game
