Woo! Beat Hard Mode, and I've completed 4 songs on Insane.
I don't expect to ever finish Insane mode (on any of the three games for that matter), so I feel like I've accomplished my main goals for the game, now I just need to get to 50 million points so I can try out the "no circle" mode. I think I have about 38 million as of right now, so I'll have to beat a few more Insane songs to get to it.

I hate hate HATE Going Under Ground on Hard Mode. The fucking song changes beats right in the middle. I damn near threw my DS on the ground after ailing it 7 times in a row.
That's nothing. I've failed Countdown on hard a total of 2-3 hundred times in a row now, I think. I've been working on it for 3 days.

How easy is it to understand this or the first one? I want to try EBA but abhor 90% of the songs in the game, I might have more fun with the Japanese one but am afraid I wont understand a single thing.

on a side note, i just got my copy today :) gonna bust it out and get to hard by the time i sleep 8-)
Edit: on second thought sleep is always nice, finished easy, unlocked 1st bonus song and halfway through normal, countdown is uber hard ><

Ouendan is just as easy to understand as EBA is, for the most part.
I'm doing pretty good still. I'm getting near the end of the girls' levels now. And I have more Hard S ranks, on Pop Star, Glamorous Sky, and the level with the kidnapped singer and the old fangirls. I'm getting close on most of the rest of them also, and the only song on Hard I've never at least gotten perfect on is the last one.

My copy came in the mail today, put it in my DS (After applying the Hori screen protector I bought in April), and beat the Easy mode in less than 2 hours. Great songs, nice scenarios, and I especially enjoyed the final stage. Can't wait to get some of the bonus songs.

OK I take back what I said about Ouendan 2 being easier than Ouendan and EBA. The patterns and the beats are so much trickier this time around. I'm slowly wading my way through Samurai Blue on hard, but loving every minute of these cool tap patterns on Hard mode.

I'm aware. I've played the game before.
I have better things to do, however. I'm just working on hard scores.
I beat the last 2 stages on insane and beat blue samurai on insane with hidden circles  Hidden circles really isn't that bad especially with songs that you fail a lot of times haha
I'm about 17 million pts off from the final rank, so its pretty much required to play with the hidden circles to score high enough to reach the final rank.
I have been on Monkey Magic on Insane forever. The other songs on Insane so far have not given me much trouble, but this one is nuts.

I'm up to Countdown with the girls now. It's definitely going to take a bit of time to get by that one. I can usually get to the third section, but after that it goes downhill right away.
Also, hidden circles mode is basically unplayable IMO. It's not the fun kind of hard, just the annoying kind. I don't know, maybe I'll like it better if I give it some more time, but as it is I can't see ever finishing a song in that mode.

I've been messing around on easy, trying to purposely fail to get the bad endings, and I found something I never would've otherwise.... if you fail on a song on easy(maybe just the easiest ones I don't know, the one I got it on was Bambina), Kai pops up and yells at you, then gives you some energy back and lets you keep going.
Also, does anyone here know what's going on in the bad ending of Vista? The best I could come up with is that since he doesn't make any money and doesn't get a store, he buys a blonde wig for... himself? his daughter? to be his new wife? I wasn't really clear on what was going on there, but the shoe salesman seemed happy at least.
The best bad ending has to be Glamorous Sky, because that was a perfect cameo and very funny.

Also, I only have 5 more songs until I beat Insane, I beat Believe a little while ago :)

Believe actually gave me more trouble on the last level than Samurai Blue did. I'm not sure why, but it might be because I play SB on Hard enough that I had the beat patterns memorized(and they didn't throw too much new in to trick you on that one). Also, Believe is evil, the bar drops faster than the beats can refill it, and because of that I don't believe it's possible to finish the song with more than one miss. I know one is possible because I've done it, though even then you barely pass.
Anyway, I finished Countdown tonight, so all I've got left is the last song with the girls, and then hidden circle mode if I decide to give it another chance. I guess I'll probably be forced to try to play with the hidden circles if I want that last rank, and I do, because I'm still around 25 million points away and I don't think the last song alone is going to do it. It's not like my scores are really low either, I have at least half the songs S ranked on Hard, and I've got a couple S ranks with the girls as well. I could definitely go back and get better scores on a lot of the songs on the hardest level, but again I don't think it'll be enough.
The last song doesn't seem too bad actually, at least once I got over the shock that they actually added more beat markers to the last song in the game somehow. I can consistantly make it to the third section(actually the first two are quite easy), and after just a few tries I'm almost finishing the third section as well. I'm sure that last section is going to be the problem, since that's what messed me up on Hard so much.
Just as a heads up, if anyone uses cyberscore, you'll love to hear that they've put up charts for the game.

Also, I'm still working on that last rank. I'm about 9 million points away now, and that's without the last song being finished. I'm still working on that too- I can usually make it to the last section now, but then I usually lose very quickly.
The last section of Shanghai Honey on Insane was one of the only things that really threw me on the first game. Edit: i did the exact same thing you did sixers, playing the songs all the time on repeat has helped :) when i'm playing and can't get enough 300's, i start listening to the song and watching the circles instead of just the song, it does wonders, but on the easier difficulties i end up hitting the markers too fast anyways ><
now, do you guys know if using hidden circle mode nets you more points? well at first i didn't notice but once i got a perfect w/ hidden circles on insane Zenryoku Shonen, the point difference was nearly 1 million points and of course if you manage to almost get a perfect on the final song on insane w/ hidden circles, the score is gonna be maxed out

A few weeks ago, over at GameFAQs, Asho posted some interesting things that he found while rummaging through the sound files of the game: Voices for Agent J and the Cat, as playable multiplayer characters. At the time, everyone just wrote it off as an intended feature that was axed during development.
Well, recently, Nintendo confirmed the purpose of these strange voice clips by updating the official Ouendan 2 web site with a new link:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/ao2j/omake/index.html (Translation (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendo.co.jp%2Fds%2 Fao2j%2Fomake%2Findex.html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8))
Yes, with the touch of an icon at the character select screen or the multiplayer screen, the Elite Beat Agents and the Cat are playable characters. The EBA in Ouendan 2 can be played in any difficulty, and they are effectively new skins for the characters they are replacing, so they use the Ouendan/Cheerleader dance moves.
But...
It's Japan-only. Yes, as the official web site says, the EBA and the Cat can only be attained by downloading them from a DS Station. In Japan. Between June 26th and July 11th. So until someone comes up with a solution for importers, you'll need either a good travel agent or a generous deity.

Bleah. I remember reading about some guy who was able to turn his PC + Nintendo USB dongle into a DS download station. (Someone doing genuine, legit homebrew!) It was pretty involved, so I never bothered doing it. This might be a good reason to go and figure it out though.
Granted, you'd have to find the right file* to upload to your DS, but that's what teh internetz is for.
*Yes, I suppose this could be considered a ROM, per se, but anything that ought to be readily available at a DS download station should be fair game.

Maybe it's not that bad... I mean, if nothing else, this should mean that once we get EBA2, we should be able to unlock the Ouendan as playable characters right?
EDIT:
Another thought, since this would mean the EBA are in a Japanese game(and presumably, the Ouendan will be in a game released outside of Japan), then there would be no issues including any EBA or Ouendan member in the new Smash Bros. game. :D

Well, I'll make it up to you yukine... By telling you how us importers can access this EBA Mode via an Action Replay.
You see, I was doing research on potential methods to unlock this mode, my interest piqued by the point made on other forums that this EBA mode was already on the DS Cart, with the Download Station acting as the key to unlock it, similar to the Animal Crossing and Nintendogs items. Anyways, I was doing research when I stumbled upon this code topic over at the ever-useful 2chan:
http://game12.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/gameurawaza/1179399284/
I was scrolling down when I hit it, post #98, the answer to our problem:
98 :23:2007/06/21(木) 20:57:17 ID:hIHvkfHo
EBAのキャラクターが使用可能になるコードできました。
@EBAモード解禁(ARDS用)
220D7397 00000001
or perhaps this would be better translated:
The EBA characters can be enabled with this code:
@EBA MODE (Action Replay DS)
220D7397 00000001
I have done some limited testing with this code on a clean save, and even now, I'm surprised. I started up the game, and found the EBA Badge icon on the single player difficulty select menu. As expected, I went into normal mode, went into the first song, and found that the EBA are in fact just new dancing skins for the Ouendan; they don't appear in any cutscenes, they still use the Ouendan voice clips, and even the cutaways are still feature the Ouendan leader. Oh, and it looks like Agents J, Derek, and Morris replace both teams. As for the Cat, it looks like he might only be available in multiplayer.
But that's not all... Curious, I went into easy mode, where the leader was, instead of J, Agent Spin. This means that Agent J may just be the tip of the iceberg. Theoretically, Agent Chieftain and the Divas should be available in their respective difficulties.
How to help: I don't have an actual Action Replay. I tested this out using the AR cheat function of the R4 on a clean ROM. Thus, I consider this code is largely untested, and I will need some volunteers to test out this code on an actual Action Replay. It should work, since it looks like this code just sets off the correct flag for the EBA mode. Right now I'm interested in finding out about the new multiplayer characters and if my theories about Chieftain and the Divas are correct.

I've done some testing with the code. It works both with R4 and the actual Action Replay :D
I'll repost what I have stated over at GameFAQs.
Regarding the part where Chieftain and Divas replacing their respective counterparts in the Hard and Cheer Girl difficulty, it is confirmed. Again, they replace BOTH red and blue teams.
However, in SSAY (the final song), where both team leaders are on screen, this changes. On the Red team, it will be the EBA (the leader of that difficulty). On the blue team, it is the Cat. What's rather hilarious is the cat comes with some of the features of that difficulty's Blue Ouendan. Which means in Hard mode, it has the Bluendan leader's hair, and in Insane, it has Rin (cheergirl leader for Bluendan)'s hairstyle.
Multiplayer
I tested multiplayer (I have both original and the ROM). Agent J takes up the final slot of the Red team, and the Cat takes up the final slot of the blue team. There appears to be no way to choose any of the other Agents unfortunately as far as I know.
That's my report for now.

Well, I've held off on getting an action replay, but I guess I'll be getting one now for this. A stupid question maybe, but then I haven't used an AR-type thing in years, does this code mess your save up at all, or does it just add EBA-mode to the game? I'm good enough at this one that I'm sure I've have my current high scores met or exceeded again in no time anyway, but I'd prefer to not have my save messed with.

It just adds the EBA mode to the game. I have not noticed any odd things in my game since activating it.
You will need to trigger the game to save for you to keep it (EBA mode) permanently.
Go to the Options, hit the top-middle tab (L/R hand + rumble pack option), and go out. The game will save.
I highly suggest you do not use any other codes with this unlock code. Play it safe. I've tested on my own carts and the codes are fine.
EDIT: Okay, I went over to check at GameFAQs, someone over there used the code, unlocking the mode but apparently lost all his songs. I don't know why it happens since it did NOT happen to me. But if you are very precautious about your save (especially if it's on an original cart), I recommend holding off for now unless you are willing to take risks (I did.)

Ok, now that I'm done being stupid for the day, I can confirm that the AR code works and doesn't effect anything in the game other than opening EBA mode(at least that's all it did for me).
The cat is pretty funny, but we all know that should've been Commander Khan instead. Also I'm disappointed they didn't at least carry over the EBA 'pop up images'(I don't know what you call them, the picture of the leader that pops up on the left side when you're doing well). I know the EBA are just swaps, but so was Khan in EBA and they gave him his own pop up image.

Good luck with that. I've almost got it down for the last song, but I don't think I'm even close to getting an S on Countdown. Every time I end up with around 30 100's, when you need around half that to S rank it.

Can anyone explain to me about how the rankings work, and how to get more 300's, 100's, etc and what those mean? My highest was C but this is the first time ive playing Ouendan or EBA. I must be doing something wrong.
Rei no Otaku
07-21-2007, 03:41 PM
100s, 300s, etc. depend on how on the beat you are. If you hit it perfectly it's a 300. Basically the better your score, the higher your rank.
pygmy carnotaur
07-21-2007, 08:38 PM
Yep, with perfect timing you get a 300, if you're off just a bit you get 100, if you almost miss completely you get 50, and if you miss you get an X(and lose the combo multiplyer you had going).
The best rank you can get is S, which you get for having roughly 90% 300s and 10% 100s. You can also get maybe 1 or 2 50s at most, as long as you have enough 300s to make up for it.
The first time through one of these games you should expect mostly Bs & Cs. Replaying it to get higher ranks & better high scores is a big part of the game after all. :)

I definitely got my $50 worth out of this game, especially when I compare it to other games I have that were $30 and don't get anywhere near this much play time.
Still no new S's here. I'm getting closer on Countdown now, I've gotten it down to around 20 100's, so a little more and I'll have it down. No closer on SSA, what always seems to happen is that I'll have a good run going, and then just miss one random beat somewhere in one of the middle sections.
The last section doesn't bother me anymore, I have it down, the trouble is just making it through without missing a random beat somewhere.
I'm sure I'll get it eventually, the last songs are always a pain to finish. Jumpin' Jack Flash on Sweatin' took me months to even get a perfect on, since I'd almost always miss one random beat in one of the last two sections.

I just picked this up a little while ago, and now I'm stuck. What the heck is the timing for "Music Hour" in hard mode? The weird off-beats are confusing me. (It's the stage with the middle aged fangirls saving the pop star)
pygmy carnotaur
09-05-2007, 02:30 PM
In the first section of Music Hour? I didn't find it too hard... if you've played Elite Beat Agents, it's a similar idea to the opening of Canned Heat. You tap on the off beats.
Personally I thought that Music Hour's opening was a little weird on hard, being that it was very different(with less beats) than the same song on normal.
EDIT:
Tried it today just to see if I had any more advice, and I still had no trouble(got an S on my first try). Make sure you're using headphones, it'll help a lot. Also I found a couple videos on youtube that show the correct timing pretty well if that will help.

After playing a bit of some insane, I went back to hard and saw the Samurai song. I decided to give it a try, since it was only hard mode. DAMN, I kept missing 300s and just lost.
And is it me or does the insane blue team's levels have the gauge drop a lot faster than the red team? I couldn't get all circles on the blue levels, but easily did it on the red levels. These are early levels too(around Monkey Magic).

Okay, I have a real copy of the game and not just a Rom of it. But I used the action replay code for the EBA mode and none of my saved data was lost and nothing seems weird with the game so I think if someone used it on a Rom version of it that it is likely to cause that problem. Or mabye could have been caused by an old version of action replay ds...
