View Full Version : What's Your "Mario Game Ranking"?

I've been playing a lot of Mario platformers recently, and it got me to thinking which ones I liked the most.
What's your order?
Mine would go:
(from best to worst)
Traditional 2D Marios:
SMB3 > SMW > NSMB > SMB
All 2D Marios:
SMB3 > SMW > YIDS > YI > NSMB > SMB > SMB2
+3D Marios:
SMB3 > SMW > SM64 > YIDS > YI > NSMB > SMS > SMB > SMB2
I know almost nothing about the Super Mario Land series, so I didn't include it.
And I don't hate SMB2...it's not a bad game, just not nearly as good as the other marios.
I'm curious which Marios other people liked the best. What's your list look like?

I was only ranking the platformers. I'd have to spend 4-6 hours to rank every mario game.
Oh, and I've never played Super Mairo RPG :-$
...Paper Mario: TTYD and both M&L games were great though.

In this order (of the Mario console platformers where you play as Mario):
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
New Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario Brothers 3
Super Mario Brothers
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Brothers 2 (US)
Super Mario Brothers 2 (JAP)
SMB 3 disappoints me going back to it recently.

Wow, indeed it is. That's lame. :cry:
Lemme say one thing, the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is a great game. Very underrated.

I respectfully disagree. My favorite has to be SMW, but I have a special place in my heart for SM64. In all honesty I think I was a bigger fan of SMB2 (US) than SMB3. I enjoyed NSMB, but it was way too short (and easy). I thought it would let me re-live the glory days of SMW, but it just wasn't as good. I deliberately excluded the Yoshi's Island games because I was never a fan of the whole egg shooting thing, plus IMO Yoshi is meant to be one of Mario's accessories/tools rather than a permanent fixture. Therefore, my list would look something like this.
SMW
SM64
SMB2
NSMB
SMB3
SMB1
SMSS

With 3D: SMW>SMB3>SMW2:YI>M64>NSMB>Mario Sunshine>SMB2>SMB
Mario RPG, the Paper Mario games etc. are too different to rank and it's been too long since I played the original Gameboy Super Mario Land games to rank them.

Totally. Just too different to rank among the platformer games. Their totally different aside from starring the same characters.
