Do you think they will announce a price drop on the PSP in between May and July? Usually at E3 is when they announce the price drops, correct?

Has the price of PSP dropped yet? With the amount of money Sony is losing on PS3, do you think Sony wants to take a hit with every PSP sold?

Price drop probably won't happen, until it costs maybe $100-$120 to manufacturer a PSP (for Sony can price it at $150 or something).

I was under the impression that e3 doesn't exist any more. I thought they got rid of it after last year.

edit: my bad looks like when googled it's still there, what happened to doing away w/ it?

They didn't do away with it, its just on a much smaller-scale, I'm hoping the price will drop to 149.99 or even 129.99!!

Sony should do it to stay competitive, but they won't because they don't think they have to. This is just wishful thinking by Sony fanboys...

If sony does not drop the price this year (preferably the first half of this year), there will be absolutely no hope for the PSP. Right now as it stands, the system is pretty much in critical condition with the DS's success.

A $129.99 price would tempt me to pick one up, to play valkyrie profile and a few other games.

The main reason I want one if for homebrew and to play all those old PS1 games I never finished. Heck I even already picked up GTA: VCS and GTA: LCS (non-GH) both for 18.99 each. May have to even sell my Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence Limited Edition (Sealed) to cover the cost. They are going for nearly $150 online, that will get me pretty darn close to covering the cost of a PSP.

QFT. With the PSP and the PS3, Sony doesn't acknowledge their competition. This would be a valid position if they were ahead on either front. However, since they are delivering a very different, higher-tech product than the competition, Sony feels no need to apply aggressive pricing on its platforms.

Also, expect a hell of a lot less for "E3" this July. Maybe a few announcements, there could still be some big stuff, but I'd expect news to come out more evenly over the year (as opposed to no news for a month before or after E3).

The PSP has sold 20 million units at this point, its most definetly not a failure. Sure its nowhere near as popular as the DS but really, what the fuck is?

In case you want to put that 20 million into perspective, the Gamecube and XBox both sold about 20 million units over their lifetime of about 5 years which the PSP has managed to do in 2 years...

Excuse me, Game.com and Neo Geo Pocket Color are NOTHING to laugh about. Both sold dozens, if not hundreds of consoles.

How can you even mention that piece of shit Game.com in the same sentence with NGPC?

To answer the OP, the PSP has existed for almost 2 years with only an artificial price drop (by that, I mean the drop from $250 to $199, which was coupled with the axing of a number of (unneeded and pretty lousy) accessories. Two years without a pricedrop is fascinating and unheard of. I fully expect to see one this year, but I have no idea when it will happen.

As for the rest of the thread: PSP vs DS? Again? You people.

You might as well get a PSP now in case there is a newer firmware after a price drop.

while the hardware is doing good enough, software is another story. i remember hearing that for 2006 the highest selling software for PSP was GTA:LCS at a half million, not exactly bragging numbers, or numbers to convince publishers to push PSP titles.

Ahhh but with the ease of porting over PS2 title and the huge install base of the PS2, we'll be seeing PSP titles for quite some time.

A $129.99 price would tempt me to pick one up, to play valkyrie profile and a few other games. The PSP and DS are VERY different. The only similarity they have are that they play games. They really aren't competing directly. Actually, the PSP IS selling just fine, its just that game sales aren't too great (because of piracy). Piracy doesn't appear to be much of an issue in Japan, since there are plenty of PSP games selling 100k or more (Monster Hunter Freedom 2 has sold over a million).

If Sony lowered the price dramatically, I guarantee Nintendo would lower theirs. It may help Sony a little, but it will help Nintendo more. But from what I believe, Sony is happy about the way PSP is selling right now, which isn't half bad. The PSP should be more expensive anywhere. You get an awesome LCD screen, awesome graphics, and tons of media capabilties. That's why PS3 cannot be priced the same as DS and it shouldn't.

I'd buy that for a dollar! Well $130 to be exact. And there's no way Nintendo will drop the DS's price. It's selling like crack.

Ultimately it's more important how retailers feel about the PSP's sales rather than Sony right now. Products can live or die depending on their retail presence. I understand that some big name retailers aren't as pleased with the PSP's performance. Sony needs to keep its primary customers (retail stores) just as happy if not more so than the common consumer.

I got a PSP this past christmas. I'm holding on to the warranty just in case the price drops. I really don't want it much anymore, katamari is the only game I play on it. But Then again, I haven't really touch my DS either.

I bought a PSP on launch day, loved Lumines and Ridge Racer...then sold it a year later because literally nothing came out. Now with the friggin' rumored God of War PSP game coming out this year, I'm considering re-buying it. However, I think the only way in hell I'll get another PSP is if they drop the price and redesign it (if the rumors are true)

Even if Nintendo drops their price in response to a Sony price drop it doesn't matter because, almost everyone has a DS... (who wants one) If the psp drops to 129.99 to match the price... Nintendo may drop to 99.99 (maybe), in this case there's be a difference of 29.99 vs. at this time, there's a difference of 70.00. If PSP drops to 149.99, and Nintendo drops to 99.99 at least in that scenario the diff will be only 50.00. Even if Sony can't match the price of the DS, its just as effective if Sony can lessen the difference in price between the psp and ds.
