I could've sworn there was a topic about this before on CAG, but searching didn't turn up anything....oh well

anybody ever driven a car with a continuous variable transmission in it? What's it feel like? As I understand it there's not supposed to be any feeling of shifting gears which when imagining it sounds weird. If I were to drive a car without that it would feel underpowered (but I'd still probably be moving along pretty spiffily), kind of like when I floor it in my dinky little auto onto the freeway lol.

I've never driven the Nissan CVT, but I have driven the Ford one. Its a little weird driving without feeling the car shift, but you really don't feel it.

As a mechanical engineer, I understand the concept, but it just doesn't feel right in a car. I'm so used to the shift, that it took me a while to get used to the one we rented for a business trip.

I don't know if they are more or less reliable that either an automatic or manual transmission. My own preference is that I probably wouldn't buy one.

If you are interested, there is this brand new concept at dealerships...maybe you've heard of them...called a test drive. :D

My car has a lot of trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd sometimes (huge jump), so I think I'd go crazy if I got a CVT. I'd think I was gonna blow the fucking thing.
